We made it to Spring! The robins and red-winged blackbirds have returned. Snow and ice are giving way to disheveled, brown blades of grass anxiously awaiting the warm rays

of sunshine that will transform them into lush green lawns and meadows. Daff odils and crocuses are eager to show their beautiful faces.

Since 1970, April 22nd has been declared Earth Day. It’s only fi tting that we pause to contemplate the condition of our earthly environment at this most awe-inspiring time of year. No matter what our individual opinions and politics may be regarding global warming and clean energy, I think we can all agree that the exquisite dawning of Spring is something we hope will be witnessed by generations well beyond ourselves.

Although much has been done to address oil spills, industrial pollution, pesticides, and preservation of wildlife and wilderness, the job is unending. Through awareness and the involvement of ordinary individuals like you and me, our breathtakingly beautiful planet can survive. Our votes and voices, our ideas and initiative, can make a diff erence.

We made it to Spring! Let’s enjoy…and make sure future generations can always say the same.

Wellness Tip

8.8 million tons of plastics get discarded into our oceans every year. 80 percent of all trash that we create on land ends up in our oceans, of which, 90 percent is plastic. The Pacific Ocean has a “garbage pile” of plastic 2X the size of Texas? We humans now rely on plastic too much and should be mindful of how we use it. Below are 6 Things You Can Do (and Feel No Pain):1. Give up plastic bags. Take your own reusable ones to the store. A trillion plastic shopping bags are used worldwide every year, and 100 billion in the United States alone—that’s almost one per American per day. 2. Skip straws. Americans toss 500 million plastic straws every day, or about 1.5 per person.3. Pass up plastic bottles. Invest in a refillable water bottle. Some come with filters if you’re worried about water quality. Around the world, nearly a million plastic beverage bottles are sold every minute.4. Avoid plastic packaging. i.e., you can buy bar soap instead of liquid. Buy in bulk. Avoid produce sheathed in plastic. 5. Recycle what you can. Even in rich countries, recycling rates are low. Globally, 18 percent of all plastic is recycled. Europe manages 30 percent, China 25—the United States only 9.6. Don’t litter. The Ocean Conservancy has run beach cleanups for 30 years. Of the top 10 types of trash they fi nd, the only non-plastic item is glass bottles. Worldwide, 73 percent of beach litter is plastic. In 2016 the conservancy collected 9,200 tons of trash in 112 countries—only a thousandth of what enters the ocean each year.

Local Historian, Betty Spinelli presents:The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing: Evelyn Nesbit and the Scandal, Murder & Trial of America’s Gilded Age

Thursday, April 11th at 1:00 pm in the Great Room

This is the true story of a beautiful girl and two prominent, very extravagant men. It’s a tale of forbidden love, jealousy and mental instability that results in a shocking, cold-blooded murder at a rooftop theater in New York City in front of nearly a thousand witnesses.

It’s a historically revealing story about American society at the turn of the century.

The presentation is 2 hours long, with a 15 minute intermission.

UNION COLLEGE ACADEMY FOR LIFELONG LEARNING (UCALL)

The Fur Trade and Exploration of AmericaMonday, April 22nd at 2:00 pm in the Great Room

Join us on a journey, relating how a religious war between Sweden and Germany led to a fashion statement that resulted in the founding of Albany. Our discussion will include the competition between England and France for continental dominance as well as a visit with the pathfi nders who led the fi rst settlers into the far American West.

Union College Academy for Lifelong Learning (UCALL) is a membership-based program for adults who enjoy learning. Our courses cover a wide range of topics and are presented by volunteers from the UCALL membership, Union College faculty and the community. UCALL courses are non-credit and require no exams or pre-requisites. Classes are held for fi ve 2-hour weekly sessions in the fall and spring.Established in 1988 on the historic Union College campus, UCALL serves the adult community of the Capital District. Now over 500 members strong, UCALL continues the Union College tradition of academic excellence.

Live Well Age Well

The Connected Life Program focuses on

highlighting the four key aspects we believe are a

vital part of a healthy, happy, and balanced life.

Residents are able to choose activities and programs

that complement their personal tastes in Health &

Fitness, Lifelong Learning, Community Activities,

and Leisure & Recreation. The best part? All

programs are free for our residents along with a daily

continental breakfast.

This includes all of our wellness activities, referrals

to community service providers, an array of

educational programs, choices of weekly recreational

events, regular social opportunities and gatherings,

transportation services for shopping, medical visits,

and so much more!

As seniors, sometimes we think we have

seen (and know) it all, but as John Wooden

once said “It’s what you learn after you

know it all that counts.” We have monthly

lectures and presentations on an array of

topics to stimulate the mind.

LEARNING

Being part of a community is more than

just being neighbors. It’s individuals com-

ing together to build each other up, share

similar interests, laugh together, and help

each other grow.

ACTIVITIES

Healthy living is an integral part of the

Connected Life Program. Whether you’re

a devoted yoga class-goer, enjoy taking

evening walks with a friend, love water

aerobics, or just need to meditate in the

morning before you start your day, our

Health program has something for you.

HEALTH

Summit residents are never without an

opportunity to have some fun. Whether

it’s trying their hand at a friendly game

of cards, unwinding in the salon, perfect-

ing their cross stitch, or just relaxing and

catching up with other residents.
