To Register Online: If you registered for SummerPrep last year, you should be able to log in with your email address. Please contact us if you are unable to log in and we will assist you. If you are new to SummerPrep, please create a new account.• Please enter your student’s information, including who is authorized to pick up the student other than the parents.• Select your classes. For two-period classes, you must register for part A and part B. This is very important in order to be eligible for discount pricing.• Click “Checkout.” Be sure to review your selections to make sure you have not taken the same class for both sessions, and that you have filled in the proper time periods with your class selections.• Enter payment information. A 50% deposit is required to register. If you elect to pay later, we will email you an invoice. You will need to pay for the class in full prior to May 17 or you could be disenrolled.

Tips: Register one student at a time, then check out and pay for each student individually. If you are registering for full days for both sessions and also need Before and After Care, complete the class registration first, then register for Before Care and After Care. This limits the number of items in your shopping cart, ensuring that your transaction processes quickly. SummerPrep offers a discounted price* for parents interested in sending students to SummerPrep for entire mornings, or for both mornings and afternoons. For students enrolled in four (4) or more eligible classes, a 10% discount will be automatically applied. For students enrolled in seven (7) eligible classes ( a full day), a discount of 20% will be applied. *Excluded from discount pricing are: Before and After Care, Rockclimbing, GPA+ SOLUTIONS, Advance Digital Filmmaking, the two interactive Spanish courses, Algebra for Credit, Intro to Graphic Design, Willy Wonka Jr. and The Wizard of Oz and all Sports Clinics.

Registration Opens February 25 Registration opens Monday, February 25 online, in person, or by mail. Session One registration ends on May 24 and Session Two registration ends on June 14. Please note: English courses cannot be taken for credit. We are offering one Math course for credit, Algebra for Credit.

Please Note: Classes of the same name offered during both Session 1 and Session 2 are not sequential or a series; they are the same class, offered during each of SummerPrep’s 3-week sessions.

Come Play And Learn!Come Play And Learn! For a safe and fun summer experience, enroll your child in Come Play and Learn! Research has shown that young children learn most effectively about themselves and each other through play. Children will become builders and architects with blocks and Legos™, discover the world of their senses with water and sand tables, become authors and illustrators while creating books of their own design, develop as artists with water colors and easel paints, as sculptors with clay, and much more. All this plus making new friends, reading stories, spending time outside and a snack – an exciting day of exploration and fun doing what kids do best – PLAY!SummerPrep’s play-based camp is for children entering grades K – 1 in the morning and for those entering K – 3 in the afternoons. Age-appropriate groupings will help ensure an engaging experience. Kids will rotate activities every period. Additionally, children enrolled in Come Play and Learn! can take advantage of SummerPrep’s classes offered throughout the day, such as Clay, Art, Tennis, Guitar . . . and counselors will escort children from Come Play and Learn! to and from other classes. Come Play and Learn! will be the younger children’s “home base” and will provide our youngest campers with a sense of community, fun, and friendship. Come Play and Learn! Extended Care The regular day at SummerPrep is 8:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Before Care and After Care, which are available for an additional cost, are available to extend your students day to begin as early as 7:30 a.m. and conclude as late as 5:30 p.m. Before Care helps students get settled in the morning and ready for their classes which start at 8:00 a.m. If your student needs to extend their day after the Afternoon camp concludes at 3:45, you may sign up for After Care program which includes an afternoon snack. The After Care program will have separate areas for students according to age groups so your child can participate in games and activities with others of a similar age. Rockclimbing 1 Our rockclimbing curriculum begins on a climbing wall on campus. Led by the highly experienced staff of Verticle Ventures (V2), students will learn the basics of rockclimbing including belay, fundamental climbing techniques, and experiential skills necessary to feel comfortable on the rock. Our final day of class on Friday includes a full-day on the rock at Las Conchas led by V2 staff. Grades 3 – 8 June 10 – 14 June 17 – 21 Classes 1:15 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. Tuition $150 *Not eligible for discount pricing.

Rockclimbing 2 Prerequiste, Rockclimbing 1 Join us on the rock to learn more specific rockclimbing skills and develop techniques for climbing on a climbing wall and on the rock. Rockclimbing 2 includes at least two full days on the rock in Las Conchas as well as instruction on ropes, knots, and belay. Take this next step on your way to becoming a true rock hound! Open Studio Art Class In this open studio art class, students are introduced to materials at various stations, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media and recycled sculpture. Students learn materials and techniques gradually and are able to experiment with freedom and openness to subject matter and technique.Week one will focus on materials studies and becoming comfortable with different media through exercises and materials play. Week two will consist of student-driven art making, as students further their experiments with material and subject matter. During week three, students will be encouraged to look back at their artwork to date and to make pieces that are larger in scale and scope, working towards a more final project. The focus is on kids having fun making art, connecting with the art that they make, experimenting with materials, and taking risks with doing things they may have never done previously. Jewelry Design and Wearable Art Design your own jewelry and wearable art in this fascinating class. Students will design and create bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and wearable art such as shirts and other clothing. Media Literacy Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media. Introduction to Graphic Design & Animation Offered by Jon Toman, this one-week course offers an introduction to cutting edge graphic design techniques using four different software programs. Students will learn a variety of current applications, and how to best apply the attributes of each in complex graphic design and multimedia projects. Students will work graphically in 3-D environments as they produce futuristic landscapes and animate wireframe models. In addition, each student will create a series of Flash and Gif animations for Web and multimedia presentations. Digital FilmmakingThis course requires a person interested in all aspects of filmmaking from screenwriting to using a digital film camera. Advanced Digital Filmmaking Tony Schoepke Sandia Prep Teacher This one-week intensive course will instruct students on the fundamentals of filmmaking. Students will learn how to properly use camera, lighting, and sound equipment, set up a film shoot, and edit their final movies using high end software. In addition, students will learn the basics of script writing and building detailed shot lists. Students will create 2 to 3 short movies and take them home on a DVD which they build from scratch. If time permits, students will use professional software to create special titles and effects for their movies. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry Students will “aparate” into the world of Harry Potter. Classes will consist of games resembling Harry Potter references, as well as “actual” Hogwarts classes. Students will be “sorted” into the four houses, make wands and potions, study Herbology, go on treasure and scavenger hunts, and tell fortunes by reading tea leaves, and more! Playwriting & Theater Workshop Using theater games, reader’s theater performance, and active participation, you will learn key elements of successful dramatic writing and theater. GPA+ SolutionsDr. Gerry Lozeau Ph.D. This study skills workshop for middle and high school students will be offered daily for two hours during the week of June 10 – 14. The instructor, Dr. Gerry Lozeau Ph.D., has worked with Sandia Prep since 1989 (see www.gpaplussolutions.com). The primary focus of the workshop is teaching students how to read and study academic material. Emphasis is placed on note-making, pre-reading, and study systems, working together to promote active learning. Better reading strategies, efficient use of study time, and increased focus in the classroom enhance learning opportunities for all students. Improving comprehension and retention of academic material is realized by utilizing best practices and habits at the middle school, high school, and college levels. The instruction and advice provided to students will hold them in good stead now and in the years ahead. Interactive Spanish Week 1 This beginning level Spanish course will be taught using Interactive White Board and Digital Language System technology. The fundamentals of the language will be taught through visual symbols that represent parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc.). Students will learn to associate a word or expression in the new language with its corresponding symbol. Students with some (elementary or middle school) experience or no previous experience are welcome in this course. English and Spanish will be used in this class. SPS Basketball ClinicFor aspiring athletes looking to discover their competitive edge. You do not need to be a Sandia Prep student to participate.These week-long, instruction-oriented clinics are geared toward athletic students interested in improving their basketball skills. Enrollment is limited, so be sure to register early. This year, Sandia Prep will offer two clinics for basketball enthusiasts in our state-of-the-art Field House. Both basketball clinics will be led by SPS Boys Varsity Basketball Coach Willie Owens, Angela Hartill, and Brian Tregembo.Director and Coach Willie Owens has been Head Boys Varsity Basketball Coach at Sandia Preparatory School for 20 years. He has developed one of the strongest basketball programs in New Mexico; guiding the Sundevils to over 300 wins, including three District titles, two Regional berths and four State Semi-Final berths including a State runner-up finish in 2010 and 2011. Willie was chosen as Albuquerque Metro High School Boys Basketball Coach of the Year for 2005. He is also the 9th/10th grade coordinator at Sandia Prep.Angela Hartill enters her second season as the women’s varsity head coach. As a former Lady Lobo, she played at UNM from 2005 to 2009. During those four years she brought home two Mountain West Conference Tournament Championships and appeared in the NCAA tournament three times. After earning her degree from the Anderson School of Management, she played one season professionally in Oberhausen, Germany.Coach Brian Tregembo has been at Sandia Prep twelve years, where he is Assistant Boys Varsity Coach. This coming season will be Tregembo’s 18th season as a coach in New Mexico. Coach Tregembo is also a full-time educator at Sandia Prep, teaching English to students in grades 6 and 8. About SummerPrep SummerPrep offers students enriching and challenging classes — and an opportunity to learn new skills or build on existing talents. We foster discovery and exploration and encourage students to stretch themselves in a safe, supportive environment.Our classes are small, so each child gets plenty of one-on-one instruction and personalized assistance. There are many classes from which to choose, so your child can look forward to lots of fun and exciting experiences at SummerPrep. It will be six weeks he or she will remember for a lifetime! Students may not have a gap in their schedule – there are no “free” periods allowed during the day.

Lunch Sandia Prep’s food service provider, Hello Prep Deli!, will offer lunch for purchase during SummerPrep. Additional snacks will be made available for sale during lunch and recess.

A daily snack will be served in the late afternoon.Please sign up in advance for Extended Care for one or more weeks at a time. Payment is due at the start of the week: $10 per week for Before Care and $20 per week for After Care.

2013 Schedule SummerPrep 2013 takes place June 3 – July 12. Classes are available in either or both of two three-week sessions unless otherwise noted in course description. Parents are invited to view students’ accomplishments on Friday, June 21 and Friday, July 12.

Payments and Cancellations We accept most forms of payment. Should a child not be able to attend SummerPrep, full refunds will be granted until May 17, 2013, less a $25 cancellation fee. After May 17, no refunds will be issued for Session One; after June 14, no refunds will be issued for Session Two.

Withdrawal from SummerPrepStudents are expected to behave according to well-accepted principles of behavior. SummerPrep has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to bullying. The SummerPrep Director reserves the right to dismiss any student at any time. Partial refunds will not be granted should a child be dismissed from SummerPrep.
