Summer tyres 2014
Safety for the demanding summer conditions from the inventor of the first winter tyre
Nokian Tyres invented and manufac-
tured the first winter tyre, Kelirengas
(“weather tyre”), in 1934. The predeces-
sor of the legendary Hakkapeliitta was
developed to be used on lorries on poor-
ly ploughed winter roads. The grooved
tread pattern of the tyre worked on
snowy roads, thereby making snow
chains obsolete.
Nokian Tyres is also a bold leader in environ-
mental friendliness. In 2005, we were the
first tyre manufacturer in the world to intro-
duce purified, low-aromatic oils to tyre man-
ufacturing. More recently, we have focused
strongly on reducing the rolling resistance
of our tyres.
When a tyre rolls on a road surface, it creates friction known as
rolling resistance. The higher the rolling resistance, the greater
the fuel consumption. The right choice of tyres will lower fuel
consumption and as a result, reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
You can have an impact on your tyre tracks by making sure
your tyres are in good condition, that the tyre pressure is cor-
rect, and by driving smartly, i.e. defensively, economically and
courteously.
What kind of tyre tracks do you want to leave behind?
Since the beginning, our careful testing and devel-
opment has been leading the way towards safer and
eco-friendlier tyres. Our experience in manufacturing
the world’s most awarded winter tyres, the Nokian Hak-
kapeliittas, also guarantees your safety when using our
advanced summer tyre range.
The ever-changing driving conditions of the north have
taught us that summer tyres must be safe to drive from
the budding of spring to the wet leaves of autumn, on
dry and wet asphalt and uneven dirt roads alike. The
extensive Nokian range offers you the choice of reliable
and durable tyres that will suit your car’s properties and
your driving habits.
Nokian zLineCool Performer.
Nokian zLine summer tyre is tailored for fast driving. It belongs to the UHP (ultra high performance) category, the top class for passenger car tyres. The sporty Nokian zLine excels under extreme conditions and is not afraid of changing road conditions or large temperature changes. The new tread compound, nanotechnology layered structure and asymmetrical inside-outside tread pattern provide excellent wet grip and driving com-fort. The multi-layer structure also lowers rolling resistance and reduces heat generation.

Large and powerful urban SUVs demand a lot
from tyres. In response to motorists’ wish-
es a tyre was born which is exceptionally
consistent to drive, rolls easily and is still
extremely strong. Nokian Z SUV, designed
for high speed categories, is available up to
22 inches and, as well as a stylish exterior,
offers a host of innovations which improve
driving stability in extreme conditions. The
tyre stays cool and responds to the driver’s
wishes immediately on all road surfaces.
Ą Tailor-made durability for SUVs
Ą Excellent grip even in extreme conditions
Ą Efficient power
Your powerful SUV puts a lot of demands on
tyres. Especially, if you take your car occa-
sionally out of the urban streets. Nokian HT
SUV is exceptionally hard wearing and strong
but still reacts immediately and accurately to
steering. Although the tyre is at its best on
asphalt, it also functions excellently off the
main roads, covered in sand and gravel. Fol-
lowing our principles of durable safety, the
tyre properties are consistent throughout its
working life.
Ą Durable construction for a long lifetime
Ą Precise and sturdy road response
Ą Good grip on both wet and dry roads across at all temperatures
Nokian Z SUV – Easy rolling superiority. Nokian HT SUV – Durable SUV tyre for the rough road.
Power and comfort for demanding SUV usePowerful four-wheel drive vehicles pose more de-
mands on tyres in terms of both performance and
structure. SUV tyres must have a precise driving feel,
and they must withstand higher wheel loads and
work reliably under extreme speeds. Drivers also
require that the tyres are comfortable and quiet like
passenger car tyres.
Nokian Tyres offers a wide and versatile selection
of safe summer tyres that have been especially de-
signed and optimised for demanding SUV use.
Nokian Tyres’ SUV tyres offer the following features: Ą A body structure that is tailor-made
for higher axle loads
Ą Higher load-bearing capability
Ą A puncture proof sidewall compound
Ą A special tread compound that guarantees good driving stability
Ą Structural solutions in both the body structure and the tread pattern improve the driving feel
Extreme conditions are not overcome by fantasy but by ideas tested in practice.
Low rolling resistanceThe more easily a tyre rolls, the less fuel it consumes and the fewer C02 emissions it generates. A 40% difference in rolling resistance transforms into an approximately 6% difference in fuel consumption, which is immediately felt in your purse.
Wave grooveThe centre groove is supported by a wave-like pattern called the wave groove. It improves the lateral stability of the tyre, which reduces the risk of aquaplaning.
Nokian Hakka C Van, Nokian Hakka C Cargo
Mud stopperThe mud stopper prevents sand and mud from getting caught between the rim and the tyre and extends the service life of the tyre and rim.
Swoop GroovesThe Swoop Grooves effectively prevent aquaplaning. The elliptical slots on the transversal grooves on the outer shoulder store more water, as the volume of the transversal grooves increases. This improves the aquaplaning resistance characteristics.
Nokian zLine, Nokian Line
Off-road clawsThe off-road claws, moulded into the shoulder area grip the surface of the road which makes traction and braking more efficient.
Nokian HT SUV
Polished groovesSnow, slush and water flow efficiently off the polished grooves under the tyre.
Nokian Z SUV, Nokian zLine
Single wire beadThe single wire bead structure ensures the durability of the tyre even with hard use.
Information fieldThe location and pressure indicators on the sidewall information area improve safety. The information area allows for recording the correct inflation pressure and installation location during tyre change.
Aquaplaning indicatorWhen the tyre has only four millime-tres of tread depth remaining, the tread’s drop symbol will disappear, reminding the driver of the increased risk of aquaplaning.

For over 75 years we have developed, tested and patented solutions that
enhance safety in driving. Continuous innovation work is harnessed to
improving safety, durability and environmental friendliness. The guiding
principle is sustainable safety: the tyre should retain its features intact
under all conditions, even as it ages and wears.

Working on the road.
Tyres that are used every day have to provide unconditional reliability throughout their life. Nokian Hakka C Cargo and Nokian Hakka C Van are designed for heavy use right down to the smallest detail. However, durability on its own is not enough, the tyre has to give an accurate feel for the road in bad weather too.
The tread pattern and structure of the Nokian Hakka C Cargo for heavy vehicles is similar to a lorry tyre and can take the heavy wheel loadings of distribution and goods vehicles without any trouble. The non-directional tread pattern enables you to mount the tyre anywhere on the vehicle.
Nokian Hakka C Van designed for light loads and passenger transport is extremely quiet and its asymmetric tread pattern provides an extremely precise drive when used with minibuses.

The EU tyre label will help consumers
compare tyres in terms of fuel economy,
wet grip, and external rolling noise.
The EU tyre label applies to tyres for passenger cars,
4x4s, vans, trucks, and buses that are manufactured after
1 July 2012 and that are approved for road use. The label
does not apply to studded tyres.
Information on the EU tyre label and its classifications is
available from tyre retailers, the Nokian Tyres website,
and the tyre label itself. The classification information
and further information related to safety are available
by scanning the QR code on the label with a smartphone.
The selection of a tyre is a sum of many components. When selecting a tyre, always choose one that matches
your usage in the best possible way. In addition to the
three properties in the EU tyre labels, there are a number
of factors related to safety, performance and the environ-
ment that tyre developers take into account. Although
the new labels make it easier to compare tyre models,
you should also support your decision by consulting the
professional tyre retailers, independent magazine tests,
and tyre manufacturers.
What does the EU tyre label tell us? Classification criteria for EU tyre label
Read more about the EU tyre labelling atwww.nokiantyres.com/eu-new-tyre-labels
Fuel economy –Lighter rolling
Ą 3 black sound waves = Exceeds the new EU type approval level
Ą 2 black sound waves = Equals the new EU type approval level
Ą 1 black sound wave = More than 3 dB quieter than required by the new type approval
Rolling resistance affects the energy efficiency, operating
costs, and carbon dioxide emissions of the tyre. Rolling re-
sistance amounts to approx. 20 per cent of the vehicle’s fuel
consumption. Lower rolling resistance amounts to better
fuel economy.
The difference in consumption between the best and weak-
est tyre (A-G) is significant, at around 0.6 l/100 km. The
lightly rolling tyres also reduce CO2 emissions by 14 g/km.
During the entire operating life of the tyre, the amount of
fuel equals five full tanks (240 litres).
For summer tyres, wet grip is especially important in terms
of safety. Tyres with excellent wet grip have a shorter
braking distance, more stable handling, and better drive-
ability. The label indicates the tyre’s braking distance on
wet asphalt, from a speed of 80 km/h. For example, the
difference between class A and class F in terms of stopping
distance can be over 18 metres, or four car lengths.
*In the EU tyre label directive, both fuel economy and wet
grip have been rated from A (best class) to G (weakest
class). For fuel economy, class D is not used; for wet grip,
classes D and G are not used.
The value for external rolling noise signifies the external
noise pollution caused by the tyre on the environment. The
interior noise that the driver experiences is not taken into
account.
In addition to the noise value reported in decibels (dB), the
label has 1 to 3 black sound waves signifying the EU type
approval class of the tyre.
Ą Best and weakest: A to G, savings of up to 5 full tanks during the operating life. *
Ą Adjacent classes: B to C, savings 0.1 l/100 km. *
Wet grip – More safety
Ą Best and weakest class: A to F, braking distance over 18 metres shorter. *
Ą Adjacent classes: B to C, braking distance shorter by one car length. *
External rolling noise – Quieter
A
G
* Car’s fuel consumption 7l/100 km. Estimated annual mileage 15,000 km, 40,000 km during the tyre’s lifetime. The values are measured according to the testing methods of decree EC/1222/2009.
