TO ERR IS HUMANThe Parks & Recreation Department works hard to ensure that each program guide is free from errors. However, there are times when errors or changes in dates, times, rates or registration information do occur. We will do everything possible to correct such errors and inform you of changes. We thank you for your understanding when these situations arise.

CONFIRMATIONSNew London Parks & Recreation will notify you only if a class is cancelled due to low enrollment or filled. We will not call you to confirm you are registered.

Any person(s) in need of an alternative format (i.e. larger print, audio tapes, Braille, readers, interpreters, amplifiers, transcription) regarding information disseminated by the City of New London should notify the City prior to a meeting, etc., and please allow adequate time after a request for a copy of brochures, notices, etc. for delivery of that alternative format. Contact Chad Hoerth, by telephone at: (TDD) 982-8521 for more information.

SUMMER ADULT FITNESSNEW IN 2021 THE NEW LONDON PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT IS IMPLEMENTING

A DROP IN OPTION FOR ALL ADULT AND SENIOR FITNESS CLASSES. After years of requests the City will be implementing drop in classes (Land Exercise/Zumba Pass) as an option to our Adult and Senior Exercise Programs. This will give flexibility to those that have unpredictable schedules and the opportunity to try all of our classes instead of committing to a full 7 week sessions. If you have a set schedule and like routine and need the accountability for your fitness goals then we are still offering the 7 week sessions at a discounted rate.

8PERSONAL TRAINING

What is personal training and how can it benefit you?• Unlike a group exercise class, personal training helps you to examine your current

lifestyle, establish goals, and creates a unique plan to help you achieve those goals.• It is more than just “one-on-one” exercise sessions. Goals are constantly evaluated and

programs are tweaked to provide an ever-evolving workout that varies, as your body needs change.

• The focus is on “you”; optimizing workouts in the amount of time that you have available, and creating a plan that you can stick to.

• A personal trainer can provide encouragement and develop safe strategies to achieve or maintain a healthy weight.

• You learn proper techniques to exercise safely and effectively.• It empowers you to make your fitness routine a part of your lifestyle.

It is for anyone of any age or fitness level, from the individual who wants to improve flexibility and range-of-motion to the seasoned athlete who wants to improve their current fitness level. We have two different options for training, personal one-on-one training or train with a buddy and a personal trainer. Both options are offered as one hour sessions, but you are more than welcome to split that into half hour sessions if that fits you and your trainers schedule better.

PERSONAL TRAINING FEES Residents Non-Residents(1-9 sessions) $27.00/hour $32.00/hour(10+ sessions) $22.00/hour $27.00/hour

Buddy Training (must have partner training with you and the Personal Trainer to receive this pricing)(1-9 sessions) $16.00/hour/person $18.50/hour/person(10+ sessions) $13.50/hour/person $16.00/hour/person

Whether you need specific issues corrected or just want to lose some weight and get into fitness or you are getting bored with your usual workout we can help you out! Our trainers can work one on one with you or we have a special pricing for those who want to work out with a buddy! All of our personal training programs are customized to the goals and individual issues you discuss with our trainer. You may work out in our gyms, the Aquatic and Fitness Center or even at our parks! Perfect for those people that have goals of weight loss or overall improving fitness levels and general health!

COVID-19 CONSIDERATIONSSummer 2020 was a summer like no other and the New London Parks & Recreation Department has done their best to provide safe, quality programming in the last year. With that being said we are continuing to work with the County Health Department on offering programs the safest ways possible. There will be smaller classes, hand sanitation stations and it will be preferred that instructors and participants continue to wear masks and/or physically distance themselves from others outside their house hold. Please be respectful to our decisions and know that we are doing it from the direction of the Waupaca County Health Department and for your safety in mind. If you have any questions in regards to our stance, please contact Ginger Arndt, Recreation Superintendent for more details.

WATER AEROBICS EXERCISE CLASSES (AQUACISE) So much more than a “little-old ladies” class!

Our instructors will have you moving to the music! If you like being in the water but get bored swimming laps, or just want to vary your routine and need some new material, consider trying pool exercise. Water exercise can also be safer and more comfortable for pregnant women or for those who are overweight, recovering from surgery, or suffer from arthritis, back pain or muscle or joint problems. With your weight partially supported by the water’s buoyancy and your movements slowed down by the water’s resistance, you are much less likely to injure yourself. Consult your physician before you begin any exercise program. All classes are one hour long. Water temp is kept between 84°-86°F. It is recommended to bring a bottle of water poolside to keep your body hydrated. New participants and questions are welcome at any time. Young adults 12-15 should have a parent with them in class.

More reasons why Aquacise is good for you!n Water supports your body making movements ranging from the simple to those that are

nearly impossible on land easier or less painful.n Research has proven that as the physical appearance improves so does the mental,

emotional, and spiritual mindset.n The buoyancy provided by the water also helps to protect your joints from the shocking

impact usually associated with exercising on land.n The resistance of the water (hydrostatic pressure) against your motions results in higher

workout intensities as compared to land exercises. Water provides 12% more resistance than movements on land- without the gravitational stress and pain! However, the amount of exertion is minimized by the water as well!

n A massaging effect is created when your muscles are surrounded by water, resulting in minimal muscle soreness.

n Non-swimmers can safely participate in shallow water and sometimes deep water.n Water visually shields your body, relieving anxiety felt in traditional exercise environments.n Renews your energy level as it releases your stress and tension.n Water exercise can be therapeutic for participants with arthritis, back or joint problems,

diabetes, fibromyalgia, post-operative patients, cardiac rehab patients, and pregnant women. Be sure to have the approval of your doctor before initiating an exercise program.

SWIMMING LESSON REGISTRATION & FEES:n Registration is open for all summer and early fall sessions. Please note the registration

closing date for each individual session. Register early for the best class selection. Classes may be closed due to low enrollment.

n Please register online (www.newlondonwi.org), by phone (920) 982-8524 or (920) 982-8521in person at the New London Aquatic and Fitness Center, 815 W. Washington St. or at the City Hall Parks & Recreation office, 215 N. Shawano St.

n Payment must be submitted to hold your child’s place in the lesson. Program Resident Fee Non-Resident General Swimming Lessons $30.00 $45.00Late Fee: $10.00 per child (Applied after registration period has closed)

THE IMPORTANCE OF FUN & GAMES: Much of a child’s early learning takes place while playing games. Images, games, and rhymes make up a child’s natural ability to imagine and pretend while learning swimming-related skills. The use of images, games, and rhymes can enhance a young child’s willingness to participate and enjoy aquatic activities. It is important to keep swimming lessons motivating, challenging and fun.

CHILDREN’S SWIM LESSONS Helpful Hints for Parents / Guardiansn On the first day of lessons, the instruc-

tor may test your children to see if they are in the appropriate level. To guarantee everyone’s success, we may reorganize classes.

n Please keep children away from the pool edge before & after their lessons. Please encourage children to walk at all times.

n You are welcome to watch your child’s les-sons from the bleachers to avoid distract-ing the students and instructors.

n To help your child’s skills improve, bring them to practice during public swim hours.

n Children learn and develop at different paces and it is common for children to repeat the same level several times.

n If your children have special health con-cerns, please inform their instructor.

n If the weather is inclement, please check Facebook for cancellation notices before you call the Pool.

n If we cancel lessons, a make-up lesson or adjustments may be made. No make-up lessons will be offered for personal absences.

n Because our classes fill quickly, please consider registering at the beginning of registration dates. Your instructor or pool manager can recommend the appropriate level for your children.

n We try to accommodate requests for spe-cific instructors, however, it is not always possible.

n We depend on your enrollment for a suc-cessful class. Please plan your schedule carefully. Your satisfaction is our goal. We strive to provide you with high quality recreation programs & we take pride in making your recreation experience an enjoyable one.

LESSON INSTRUCTOR’S ROLE: Your child’s lesson instructor is their hands-on access to progressing through each level. Instructors are responsible for approving skills and complet-ing the checklist. Instructors are trained by going through pre-lesson training, co-teach-ing, meetings, taking the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor class and/or following a prescribed lesson plan. It is our intention to keep the same instructor with a class through-out a session. Although we attempt this, your child may not always have the same instruc-tor. Our instructors are mostly high school and college students with many other activities. If an instructor needs a sub and misses more than one class the instructor must try to get the same sub.

34SWIM LESSON LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS

• PARENT & CHILD (6MO – 2 YEARS): This class is offered to give you and your child guided time in the pool without the frenzy of the public swim atmosphere. The instruc-tor will introduce you to the pool, the safest ways to enter a pool with a child, and give you an idea of the skills that are taught in the lower levels of the Learn-to-Swim program. Some of these skills include floats, glides, arm actions and breath control.

• PRE- AQUATICS (3 TO 5 YEARS OLD): This level offers a structured class setting with parent participation being optional or as needed. It is designed for the lifeguard to be a teacher rather than a facilitator as in the previous level. The skills covered in this level are primary water skills that aim to improve the child’s comfort in the water including safe entry and exit, submerging, buoyancy, changing body position in the water, and learning about lifejackets. All skills are accomplished with assistance.

• LEVEL 1 (5 TO 7 YEARS OLD): The objec-tives of this level are to learn basic personal water safety skills and rules. Participants will learn elementary aquatics skills such as floating, gliding, and arm and leg strokes that are the basis of advanced skills taught in the upper levels. All skills are accom-plished with assistance, but independence is fostered.

• LEVEL 2 (8 YEARS+): This class builds upon the basic skills learned in Level 1 and individuals become comfortable performing the skills on their own, with no assistance.

In this level, participants will see progress in true locomotion skills on the front and the back by combining arm and leg actions. Deep water is explored with and without floatation to increase comfort levels.

• LEVEL 3: This is a stroke development class that builds on the fundamentals taught in Level 2. The arm and leg actions of the butterfly and breaststroke are combined and individuals learn the rules of headfirst entries.

• LEVEL 4: Stroke finesse is the main focus of this level. Initially, students combine arm and leg actions in all six strokes. Increased distances improve endurance of the basic strokes, while instruction and practice help to develop the more advanced butterfly, breaststroke, and sidestrokes. Participants also learn open turns to become more ef-ficient swimmers. Progress is also made in diving skills.

• LEVELS 5/6: These students desire to become more coordinated in all six strokes through increased practice and longer dis-tances. Flip turns and diving entries are also taught and practiced to increase efficiency while swimming.

Graduates of our swim lesson program often enroll in Junior Lifeguarding and Lifeguard Certification classes, swim with competitive teams such as NEAT or at the high school level and then continue on to swim collegiately, or they compete on water ski teams in the area.
