Dear Parents and Guardians,

Let’s keep literacy alive this summer!

“The value placed on literacy in the home, time spent reading with children, and the availability and use of reading materials have been identified as important elements in children’s reading success.” (Mraz andRasinski, 2007)

Here is how families can grow literacy skills over the summer:

• Make time for reading • Encourage writing • Make time to build vocabulary • Make sure your children are physically active • Get out and experience the world

In order to promote a life-long love of literacy, reading and writing must continue throughout the summer. With this in mind, Pennsbury’s elementary schools have developed a summer reading program in which all students are required to read.

• Students entering Grades 1 and 2 are required to read 5-10 books (depending upon length). • All students must complete and return one postcard (attached) about one of their summer reading books. • All students who fulfill the summer reading requirement will be invited to a reading celebration!

All of this information is available on the district web site along with additional resources such as book lists, free local library activities, and the Barnes and Noble summer reading program.

Looking forward to hearing about your summer reading adventures!

Sincerely,
