Summer is approaching quickly and with it comes endless hours of play, relaxing—and reading. The Association for Library Service to Children, the national authority on childhood literacy, has developed a Summer Reading List for children under five years

of age. Featuring 10 highlighted books—five each for ages one to three and ages three to five—the 2013 LEGO® DUPLO® Read, Build, Play Summer Reading List adds playful interactions to help smooth the way to early literacy.

This Read, Build, Play @ Home toolkit is designed to show you how to combine reading, building and play to help your child develop her early literacy skills. By adding the elements of building and play during your family story sharing time, you can heighten your child’s level of engagement while encouraging her to use her creativity, imagination, dexterity and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength.

Play is a timeless feature of human societies, and when combined with 21st century learning it provides children and adults with opportunities to experiment with their surroundings as a form of problem solving.

1. ASK QUESTIONS. Ask your child, “What colors are in the rainbow?” and “What color is made when you mix together yellow and blue?”. Let him guess.

2. PREPARE FOR PLAY. Prior to reading ‘Press Here’ place a small pile of yellow, red and blue bricks in front of your eager audience.

3. READ. Read ‘Press Here’ once all the way through allowing your little one to enjoy the story’s whimsical illustrations.

4. READ AGAIN & BUILD. Next, read the story a second time and ask him to play along with the bricks in front of him. When the book prompts “Press here and turn the page” have your child stack two yellow bricks before you turn the page. When the book says “Press the yellow dot again” have him add another brick on top. Have fun by mixing building with this interactive story!

5. PLAY MORE. Can he build one big tower made of only red and yellow bricks? Can he sort all the colors into different groups—yellow, red, blue?
