VACATION TO NEW ORLEANS (VIDEO LINK) Wednesday, July 14 @ 7pm WIA 101 The city of New Orleans literally vibrates – from boisterous merrymakers in open-sided bars to the jazz notes filling the air and tummy-fluttering aromas floating from endless bistros. Come take a stroll through one of the city’s labyrinth of above-ground cemeteries; learn about the nature of its French Quarter and its enigmatic connection to the dark arts with this Savvy Sightseer Video Vacation!

CHANGES TO COMMUNITY MEDICAID (ZOOM) Thursday, July 15 @ 7pm WIA 102 Join us for a Medicaid workshop that will discuss the significant changes to the Medicaid laws and what you should do to preserve your assets.

NIGHT SKY TOUR FEATURING THE FULL MOON (ZOOM) Tuesday, July 20 @ 7pm WIA 103 Have you ever heard of the expression, “when the stars align”? How about, “must be a full moon out tonight”? Join an astronomy expert from the Vanderbilt Planetarium and take a journey into the night’s sky. Using online technology you will soar into outer space. If weather permits, you can then go outside and stargaze yourself and take a look at the full moon!

SIGN LANGUAGE (ZOOM) Mondays, August 2-16 @ 7pm WIA 104 Join ASL teacher Rosemary Algios as she teaches you the basics of American Sign Language. Attending each session will help build your skill level on communicating with others.

MEMOIR WRITER’S GROUP (ZOOM) Wednesday, August 4-18 @ 2pm WIA 105 This Memoir Workshop will offer a safe and creative space for those wishing to preserve and share their memories. Through writing and gentle feedback, participants will be encouraged to transform their life experiences into creative works of nonfiction. Whether your goal is to create a gift for your family or a published memoir, this group can help you take that first step.

OUT OF RUSHMORE’S SHADOWS: THE LOU DEL BIANCO STORY (ZOOM) Tuesday, August 10 @ 7pm WIA 107 Storyteller Lou Del Bianco portrays his grandfather, Luigi Del Bianco, and talks about his unsung contribution as chief carver on Mount Rushmore. He uses authentic photos, timelines and primary sources to bring Luigi’s story to life. Lou also discusses designer Gutzon Borglum’s praise of Luigi, the 25 year struggle to get him recognized and the CBS SUNDAY MORNING tribute where the plaque at Mount Rushmore is finally unveiled! Now a published book authored by Lou, “Out of Rushmore’s Shadow” is a touching story about Luigi’s legacy and the immigrant struggle.

UNCLAIMED FUNDS WORKSHOP (ZOOM) Thursday, August 19 @ 7pm WIA 109 A representative from the New York Comptroller’s Office will be providing a webinar on unclaimed funds discussing the history and facts of unclaimed funds along with a walk through of claim instruction and search tips.

JAZZ THEN & NOW: GREG DEANGELIS TRIO (FACEBOOK PREMIERE) Wednesday, July 28 @ 7pm Grab a drink and join trombonist Greg DeAngelis and his trio on Facebook as they explore the innovations in jazz from the early 1900s to the 21st century. BLOCK ISLAND SEAFOOD (ZOOM) Monday, July 12 @ 6:30pm WIA 210 Welcome back the Block Island Seafood Company for a virtual cooking session. They'll be doing a grilled skirt steak topped with Chimichurri and paired with lemon roasted potato salad. Also Chef Craig will demonstrate a fluke recipe with a couscous salad.

BBQ FOODS (ZOOM) Wednesday, August 4 @ 7pm WIA 211 Join Bellport’s Chef Cheryl from Chara’s Kitchen who will demonstrate classic BBQ dishes with a twist. Learn some new grilling techniques to use for the remainder of the summer. Recipes will be provided.

In this lecture class, you learn all about the features offered in your smart device, how to set up an account, communicate with your device, what apps you will need, as well as how to set an alarm, turn on lights, play music and much more. BRAINFUSE FOR ADULTS (ZOOM) Tuesday, July 27 @ 7pm WIA 136 Suffolk County Library Cardholders all have access to some very useful resources through Brainfuse, a collaborative learning service that provides live tutoring and writing feedback. Learn about the careers that are available, all with just your library card!

SUGAR LIP SCRUB KIT (YOUTUBE) Friday, August 13 @ 10am WIA 113 Learn how to make your own lip scrub in a raspberry lemonade flavor. Supplies will be made available on the date of the program.

STRESS RELIEF OIL KIT (ZOOM) Tuesday, August 24 @ 7pm WIA 115 In this virtual hands on class, participants will make a roller ball with Stress Away, Grapefruit and Orange essential oils and will also explore various stress relieving techniques. Supplies will be made available Friday, August 20 and you must attend the Zoom class to participate.

THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN (OUTDOOR) Thursday, July 22 @ 7pm WIA 133 Join us in this historical fiction novel set during Japanese colonialism during the 1930s and 1940s. While working as divers with the all-female diving collective on a small Korean island, Mi-ja and Young-sook find their friendship challenged by their differences and forces outside their control. This beautiful novel illuminates a world turned upside down, one where the women are in charge and the men take care of the children. Books will be made available upon registration.

BIG LITTLE LIES (OUTDOOR) Tuesday, August 31 @ 7pm WIA 134 Now a hit HBO TV series, this story follows three mothers, each at a crossroads, and their potential involvement in a riot at a school trivia night that leaves one parent dead in what appears to be a tragic accident, but which evidence shows what might have been premeditated. Join librarian Michaela to discuss this thrilling adventure. Books will be made available upon registration.

CUTTING THE CORD (ZOOM) Wednesday, August 11 @ 7pm WIA 137 Streaming services are changing all the time! Join us for this lecture about the different streaming services and the process of cutting the cable cord.

AUTHOR EVENT: JEN CALONITA (ZOOM) Tuesday, August 3 @ 6:30pm WIYA 191 Add to your summer reading and earn an hour of community service by virtually attending an au-thor event with popular teen writer Jen Calonita who has written the Twisted Tales series along with Secrets of my Hollywood Life.

Learn about her writing process, development of characters and how she came to write these stories. There will be time for a Q&A at the end of the presentation.

LEARN ABOUT THE GUIDE DOG FOUNDATION (ZOOM) Monday, August 16 @ 4:30pm WIYA 193 The Guide Dog Foundation will be live on Zoom with us! Learn about the Foundation and the numerous ways in which you can help. Teens will receive one hour of community service for attending this program.

REVIEW WHAT’S NEW Check out one of our new books in the teen section, read it, and write a one page review on whether or not you would recommend this title to another person. Before you read and write your review, fill out our application and hand it in to our librarians at the Adult Reference Desk for approval of your book choice. Earn 2 hours of community service after you hand your review in.

DIGITAL SERVICES REVIEWER PROGRAM Explore the library’s many helpful digital resources on our website, www.westisliplibrary.org. Write a 3 paragraph review describing what resource you used, how it was useful and would you use it again. Some resources include Flipster to view magazines, Libby to view eBooks and Pronunciator to learn a new language. Earn 1 hour of community service for each review. You will need a donut cake pan and all perishable ingredients. Supplies, recipe and video instruction will be made available the date of the class.

SUPERHERO CLIPBOARD KIT (YOUTUBE) Monday, August 23 @ 10am WIYA 106 Get ready for the school season and add to your supplies by creating a fun, decorative clipboard in the theme of Captain America. Supplies and video instruction will be made available the date of the program.

PENCIL HOLDER KIT (YOUTUBE) Monday, August 9 @ 10am WIYA 192 As the new school year is quickly approaching, give back to those in need by making a pencil holder for students who are unable to purchase one. Supplies will be made available on the date of the program and projects must be completed by August 30th. Earn one hour of community service by completing this kit.
