Reflections On A Remarkable Year

I can hardly believe we are approaching the end of another amazing year for our fantastic community. What a pleasure it is to reflect on the success of our students over another busy and productive term. My thanks go to all the students and staff who feature in this vibrant record of our achievements and also to the hundreds of people who have represented the Academy with distinction in a broad range of activities this year.

If that wasn’t enough we have such a lot to look forward to over the summer and next year. The confident way our Year 11, 12 and 13 students have approached their GCSE and A Level exams suggest we will enjoy the results days in August and we move into our impressive new build in July, ready for a grand opening in September. Students and parents will be delighted by the improvements we will make to our dining and sixth form facilities and our new reception and administration centre will finally reflect our status as one of the best schools in the country.

Summer 2014Page 2

Page 3: Summer newsletter 2014

We will also welcome Nether Alderley, Broken Cross Primary Schools and The Winsford Academy into our newly establish Multi-Academy Trust and look forward to the exciting opportunities this venture will bring for students and staff; I will write to parents with more information about this later in the term.

At the time of writing we still have Awards Evenings, Sports Day, Concerts, the Sponsored Walk and Investigations Week to come. Such a busy end to a hugely successful year is a real indication of the commitment of a dedicated team of staff and enthusiastic cohort of students.

Perhaps the best reflection of our quality came from the ‘Peer Review’ that we contracted from the Whole Education Network. The report of this mini-inspection is published on our website. In summary our provision is described as ‘Transforming and Inspiring’. I couldn’t put it better myself!

With best wishes for a restful summer holiday.

Alumni News

Since the re-launch of the Fallibroome Alumni Association at the end of November last year things have gone from strength to strength with membership increasing to 657. In addition the popularity of the Fallibroome Alumni Facebook page has continued to increase and has now passed the one thousand ‘likes’ mark. Ex-student, Alex Booth, has also set up an Alumni page on Linkedin which now has 40 members.

In June ex-Fallibroome student, Simon Goodwin, organised a reunion of the 1994 intake. The event took place on a warm

Summer 2014Page 4

Page 5: Summer newsletter 2014

Summer evening at The Flower Pot in Macclesfield and it was good to see the now ‘not-so-young’ ex-Fallibroome students and their even older teachers catching up on the intervening fifteen years!

It is always good to hear how ex-students are getting on and two bands –‘ f reedomoftheci ty ’ (S imon Goodwin) and ‘Racing Glaciers’ (Tim Monaghan,Danny Thorpe, Matt Scheepers) are beginning to make an impact. It was also good to note that Scott Vernon, now a professional footballer with Aberdeen in the Scottish Premier League, helped the club to second place in the League with an end of season hat trick.

On a sad note everyone connected with Fallibroome will have been saddened to hear of the tragic death of Rob Hart, 26, at the Parklife Weekender event at Heaton Park at the beginning of June. Rob was a well-liked member of the school community and was at his best having a laugh and a joke with both staff and other students. Rob left Fallibroome after completing his ‘A’ level studies and during his time at school he was always willing to help younger students, providing a solid role model for the lower years. He will be greatly missed.

Following the Alumni Association Meeting on 30th June plans are now in full swing for the inaugural Alumni Association event on Saturday, 8th November from

12.00pm to 3.00pm. This will be open to all ex-students who are now members of the Alumni Association and will include an opportunity to catch up with other members as well as staff who taught them. This event will start with a buffet lunch followed by an opportunity to view the school, including the new £6m block, via a number of guided tours and conclude with the presentation of the initial ‘Hall of Fame’ members. In order to help the school to cater for this event, free tickets –max. two per person – will be available later this year and will be advertised via the Alumni Association Facebook page as well as via the school’s website. We hope to see many of our ex-students there for what promises to be an exciting occasion.

Congratulations on a massive achievement for Year 10 Fallibroome student, Amy Carter, who has been called up by England Netball to join the U19s National Academy! Amy (on right of picture) has successfully progressed along the arduous England Netball Performance Pathway to join the elite U19s National Academy athletes.

This year has been another truly brilliant season for our netball teams. There has been a great deal of success for all the teams who showed a really determined approach.

U19s England Selection

In the Macclesfield and District League we have once again swept the board, winning the 7A, 8, 9, 10 and Senior leagues. The 7B team were also runners-up in their respective league.

Our Under 16 team went on to prove that they were worthy of their place at the National Schools’ Final, representing the North West. The girls performed exceptionally well throughout, making it all the way to the final and only losing narrowly in the last minute 7-6 to Leeds Grammar School. Despite this, the girls were not only awarded with the Runners-up trophy, they retained their ‘Best Defensive Record’ trophy which is a fantastic achievement.

Summer 2014Page 10

Page 11: Summer newsletter 2014

Mr Kelly has been busy organising and leading numerous events for our Cluster Primary Schools to attend here at Fallibroome during the summer term. Alongside Mr Kelly our Year 9 and 10 Sports Leaders have been assisting with the running of the events, leading activities for the Primary students to take part in. Our students have helped deliver fun multi-skills activities and athletic events which have all been thoroughly enjoyed.

Primary Sports team spirit with some fantastic individual results.

On the day, the Minor Girls’ team (Year 7) finished in 3rd place, whilst the Minor Boys’ team finished in 4th place. Individual success stories on the track include David Cook, 100m, Eve Cobey, 800m, Shona Williams, 1500m, who all finished in 1st place. James Wilson, long jump, and Joe Flynn, discus, also finished in 1st place in their respective field events.

The Junior (Years 8 and 9) and Inter (Years 10 and 11) teams also competed well at the Championships. Both the Junior Boys’ and Girls’ teams finished in 7th place whilst the Inter Boys’ and Girls’ both finished

in 6th place. Charlie Candlish, 800m, Harry Simpson, 1500m, Dulcie Whadcock, 800m, Niamh Lewis, hurdles, Harry Simpson, triple jump, and Lydia Hatton, high jump, all came 1st in their respective events for the Junior teams. Inters, Doug Swallow, javelin, and Claire Slater, long jump, were overall winners in their events.

At the English Schools’ Competition, our Inter Boys’ (Years 9 and 10) and Junior Girls’ (Years 7 and 8) teams have both qualified for the English Schools’ North West Finals following their fantastic team performances at the County Rounds. Good luck to all our students who will be taking part.

AthleticsAt the Macclesfield and District Championships, all our students performed exceptionally well, demonstrating a great sense of

Cricket & Tennis NewsIt has been a busy time for our cricket and tennis teams who have been in action over the term with either practices or matches.

Fallibroome’s girls’ cricket team played their first fixture against Cheadle Hulme School this term. The girls were quite apprehensive having only trained for a couple of weeks however it turned out there was no need for nerves. Completing 102 runs to 0, the girls were worthy winners and now look forward to playing some more fixtures before the cricket season ends.

After a superb first game beating All Hallows convincingly, the Year 8 boys’ cricket team played Wilmslow in their second League fixture. Despite demonstrating a fantastic attitude and team spirit the boys lost the game by 1 run. They will put this result behind them and look ahead to their future fixtures over the next month.

In tennis our Year 7 and 8 girls’ team travelled to Altrincham for their first fixtures of the season. Josie Elliot (Y7) won both her games 6-0, Ella Banks (Y7) won 6-0 and 6-4, Hope Murray (Y7) won 6-0 and 6-4 and Ellie Thomas (Y8) won 6-0 and 6-1.

The sun shone and the rain stayed well away for Sports Day. Competitors taking part in the morning got us off to a flying start, setting high standards and breaking numerous records. The success continued into the afternoon, when the rest of the school joined us up at the track to support the competitors and get behind their community.

Despite Red, Blue and Yellow communities putting up a great fight, it was the Green community who came out on top, winning the overall competition for the second year running. Five Year 7, five Year 9 and seven Year 10 students broke previous School Sports Day records throughout

the day proving we have some great talent across all year groups.

This year there wasn’t just action and excitement happening on the track, Community managers and Sixth Form students ran stalls, activities and games on the outside of the track for competitors and spectators to participate in. Ice cream vans also took centre stage with lengthy queues of staff and students all waiting for their “99’s”.

Summer 2014Page 16

Page 17: Summer newsletter 2014

OrienteeringFallibroome Orienteering seems to grow in numbers each year. We had forty eight students taking part in the British Championships in November. The squad which regularly runs in the Cheshire and Merseyside Schools League topped over fifty competitors and it looks as though there will be even more next season. The team has gained more success this year, retaining their hold on the Two Rivers Shield as the Cheshire and Merseyside champions for the fifth consecutive year. We won several medals: four individual gold medals, eight silver medals and seven bronze medals. The final big competition of the year was the relays held at

Birkinhead Park in May. The non competitive staff team of Mrs Jordan, Mr Hayes and Mr Fletcher came first in the Mixed Open Relay. In the Open Section Jack Dymond, Joshua Pearson and Saul Skirvin were beaten into second place by two seconds by Sandbach. Matthew Felbaum, Edward de Sousa and Ed Harvey were close behind in third place. In the Year 7/8 Relay Harry Brown, Nomi Fischer and Nathaneal Horton took the gold and in the 9-11 relays Angus Currie, Sam Amey and Charlie Jordan received the silver medal.Well done to all runners who completed a course at a local event or the Nationals. You all did very well throughout the season and you should be proud of your achievements.

Page 21: Summer newsletter 2014

As part of their project work on Hinduism, our Year 7 paid a visit to the Gita Bhavan Hindu Temple in Chorlton. After a short coach ride we arrived at the temple and were greeted by one of the congregation. We were taken into the main hall where the students were given a brief history of Hinduism including some of the main beliefs and practices by a local Hindu teacher. Next we removed our shoes and respectfully entered the temple where all the statues of the gods and goddesses were on display. Whilst we were there the students got to experience Hindu worship first hand as Hindus came in to pray. As we were leaving, the students had the opportunity to receive a bindi and gift of fresh fruit.

Silk Museum Exhibition SuccessYear 9 students completed an installation of sculptural and textile pieces to contribute to the ‘Young Arts Take On The Splendid Silks of China’ exhibition in a space at the Silk Museum, Roe Street. The exhibitions organisers, Annabel Wills and former Fallibroome student Charlotte Butler, decided that the work produced by Fallibroome Academy and Beech Hall students would be exhibited alongside the ‘Ancient Chinese Textiles’ that inspired it.

Mrs Ankers and 9P decided together that the installation would hang in the centre of the exhibition room and would be made up of wire and textile silk

moths, alongside two hangings containing digital images of their worksheets.

Work from both schools was judged by a panel of artists and organisers including Margaret Robertson chair of MADFAS (Macclesfield Decorative Fine Arts Society). Amy Morris, Molly Ellison and Milly Evans gained first, second and third prizes for their sculpture and sketchbook work, receiving their awards from The High Sherrif of Cheshire, Susan Sellers, at the grand opening of the exhibition on the 10th May. Margaret Robertson said “Mrs Sellers was impressed by the very high standard of the student’s work. ”.

insider’s view of the challenges and choices facing many top athletes and organisations today.

Football FeverEarlier in the year, author Dan Freedman visited Fallibroome to share his passion for football which has resulted in him writing the Jamie Johnson series of books. Our Year 7 audience enjoyed watching a short film adaptation of the books and were pleased to hear about a forthcoming story taking Jamie Johnson to the World Cup!

Dan also held a special forum with students studying A level and GCSE PE to discuss issues relating to the role of the media in elite sport. Students were keen to hear about Dan’s earlier career in journalism working for the F.A and the Premier League which has provided him with an

Keen readers from the book groups in years 7 and 8 were recently invited to join other Cheshire bookworms at an event featuring the well known writer and actor Charlie Higson. Charlie was promoting his new book, The Fallen, the latest instalment in his very popular zombie horror series. Our readers enjoyed hearing about Charlie’s writing

process and about the ideas behind the stories and were delighted to have the opportunity to meet him at the end.

New Sixth Form Centre UpdateThe walls are up and we are waiting for the light and ventilation shafts to be put in but this will be done in the final stages in July. The offices are taking shape, the interior decor for the Coffee Shop and the first floor study areas have been chosen and it is going to look fantastic! We are still on for a July finish, and will be ready to move in for September. A Sixth Form student survey is also being undertaken regarding the service and food provided in the Coffee Shop and we hope to be able to respond to the suggestions made. The new facilities will provide an outstanding opportunity for the Sixth Form at Fallibroome in terms of both catering and social spaces and, as requested year on year, quiet study facilities.

Young ScientistsRecently three of our Year 12 scientists - Daniel Saad, Jon Mitchell and Alex Morris - took part in the Schools’ Analyst Competition. Here they tell of their experience.

The Schools’ Analyst Competition was an interesting excursion which provided us with an insight into the world of analytical chemistry. The atmosphere was tense but we were eager to beat our competitors and so we quickly settled into the lab at Manchester Metropolitan University. It was challenging at first due to the high grade (and thus complex) equipment in the lab.

“In my opinion the hardest task was trying to operate the extremely accurate scales which measured to 1x10^(-5) of a gram!” - Daniel Saad

The assortment of pipettes, all of different volumes and shapes, were certainly a breathtaking sight for the young aspiring chemists. Of course, professional chemists were present to supervise the students and ensure that no one destroyed the building in an accidental chemical explosion. The chemists were also very helpful and offered guidance on how to improve our practical skills, which proved very useful during our chemistry EMPAs!

Festival Of Chemistry At Manchester UniversityYear 8 students - Nomi Fischer, Harry Brown, Jack Newby and Tabitha Gallemore spent a very exciting Monday at Manchester University attending the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry. The day involved a series of practical activities, including one that was ‘no teachers allowed’! They started off displaying their brilliant teamwork and practical skills to solve a ‘crime’.

Summer 2014Page 34

Page 35: Summer newsletter 2014

Careful chromatography was carried out to determine the author of the note and to identify the trace chemical left at the scene. After a short break, it was time to write up their findings. The afternoon task was to make a chemical reaction change colour at exactly one minute so it could be used as a stopwatch. The day was rounded off with a ‘Flashes and Bangs’ demonstration and an award ceremony. It was a fun day for all and the students were awarded Second Prize in the Salters’ Challenge.

Year 9 Students Visit The Battlefields

Summer 2014Page 36

Page 37: Summer newsletter 2014

In April, the History department took 65 students on the annual trip to the First World War battlefields of Belgium and France.

This year had added poignancy as it is, of course, the centenary of the outbreak of the war. This was certainly obvious from the increased number of visitors at many of the sites we visited, not least at the Menin Gate ceremony in Ypres where the Last Post is played at 8pm every evening of the year.

Other sites visited included the Canadian memorials at Newfoundland Park and Vimy Ridge in France. Wreaths

were laid at both the Thiepval Memorial to the battle of the Somme and at Tyne Cot cemetery in Passchendaele, Belgium in memory of the men from Macclesfield who fought and died in the war.

A minutes silence was observed immaculately by the students at both sites. We were lucky tobe accompanied by former Fallibroome Head of History, Mr Clark, who enlightened the students and staff with his expert knowledge of the First World War.

All of the students who came on the trip found it a moving and valuable experience.

Macbeth Performance and Workshop

Summer 2014Page 38

Page 39: Summer newsletter 2014

“The Scottish Play”In March, a group of Year 7 students went to watch ‘Macbeth’ at the Z-Arts in Manchester. William Shakespeare wrote ‘Macbeth’ over 400 years ago.

It started with a bang-everyone jumped out of their skin! The play was cool and a bit funny but mostly sad, dark, scary and cruel. It’s bad luck to say ‘Macbeth’ so people call it “The Scottish Play”. ‘Macbeth’ is about the murder of King Duncan and the person who killed him was Macbeth. He plotted the murder because he wanted to be king himself. When he became king he killed

a number of people. All this was done because three witches gave Macbeth some predictions, which he made come true.

It was a fantastic play; we got to chat to the characters and the actors and actress. When I asked Macduff how it felt when his family was murdered, he said’ “hollow”.

Thank you for a great day from the Year 7 students to Mrs Fay. My favourite bit of the play was all of it. I would rate this day as 5 stars. It was so much fun and I hope we do something like this again.

At Easter 60 music students from Fallibroome visited Spain to delight audiences with their talents! We had an incredible time and performed three amazing concerts. The weather was super and with the sun shining we took part in flamenco dance workshops, went on a glass bottomed boat trip, had a trip to Barcelona, walked in Girona and did some swimming in the pool! More importantly, we had the opportunity to rehearse and perform for some great audiences in some wonderful locations...from a beautiful church in Tossa de Mar in which Mary Swallow’s flute solo hit the rafters, to a fun and lively outdoor concert in Lloret de Mar where the audience were up on their feet dancing. They even

presented us with a plaque to say thank you. It was a memorable week, with lasting friendships, amazing performances and beautiful scenery. Now, where shall we go next.....?!

Alderley Edge Music FestivalA number of Fallibroome students took part in the Alderley Edge Music Festival, and many won their categories!

Huge congratulations to all students who took part, as individuals and ensembles, including Sam Wood for his winning piano solo and Thomas Mortishire-Smith for winning his brass category.

Students Compete In The Love Music Trust CompetitionBrassed Off and Motorcycle Mechanics hit the high notes at Clonter Opera last term as they got through to the final of the Love Music Trust Competition. Both ensembles performed brilliantly, with attention to detail

and accuracy. Clonter Opera was a great venue to perform in and the audience was really responsive. Sixth Former Ben Jones helped to prepare the vocal group along with Mr Kennedy, and they performed

superbly. Well done to soloists David Norbury and Josh Banner. Louise Renshaw directed Brassed Off with a performance of ‘Like a Child’ which showed the ensemble’s maturity and musical expression. Well done to all students involved!

Re:Play Students Celebrate!Re:Play celebrated the end of its fifth year with a presentation evening to congratulate those students who have been involved in the groups this year. The evening started with a bang as the newest members of the groups (Years 3&4) performed with confidence and style. Their singing and playing was fantastic! The audience was then treated to performances from the older students (Years 5-6) who have been playing a little

longer and who demonstrated more complex techniques and an excellent sound. Mr Power joined us to award students with their certificates and the evening closed with performances from Re:Play Later, our adult group,

who sounded fantastic!

We are currently recruiting for Re:Play 6 so get in touch with us ([email protected]) if you know someone who is interested.

Lower School ConcertLast month we were joined by numerous talented musicians in Years 7, 8 and 9 at the Lower School Concert. Over 30 students performed solo and ensemble pieces which varied hugely in style, from Charlie Jordan’s electric guitar performance of the Rock School piece ‘Geek’, to Nathanael Horton’s amazing cello solo. It was great to see lots of Year 7 students confidently taking the stage to perform, without any sign of nerves!

The audience loved the event and applauded at all the right moments. We heard popular and musical theatre vocal duets; a lovely clarinet duet from Hannah Eccelston and Phoebe Shaw and even two band numbers.

The whole evening was an exciting event and thanks to all who took part. See you there next year!

Fallibroome Performing Arts Join Barnaby At Charles Roe HouseAmidst the hustle and bustle of the Barnaby celebrations on 21st June, our Performing Arts students were causing quite a stir themselves!

We had been invited to perform in Charles Roe House, current home of ‘Incubation Arts’, who aim to develop the building to promote creativity in the community. So amidst the flow of people who had come to see the artwork and Joy Division exhibitions on display, we offered up some of our newest talent to perform and celebrate Fallibroome’s own creativity.

We had buskers in the form of vocalists, violins and guitars; street dancers and contemporary dancers inspired by local band Joy Division and some of our young actors performed creative adaptations of fairy tales by The Brother Grimm.

It was great to be a part of such a vibrant and creative community event and we look forward to many more links with Incubation Arts and Charles Roe House in the future.

Drama Club Review

Over 30 students attended Year 7 Drama Club every Wednesday lunchtime this year. The club aims to develop confidence and self esteem, as well as making new friends and having fun!Drama Club members have been rehearsing the magical and mysterious play ‘Ernie’s Incredible illucinations’ by Alan Ayckbourn. This comedy tells the story of a young boy, Ernie Fraser who has extraordinary powers. When his thoughts turn into reality, Ernie’s parents consult a doctor only to be told that they are also experiencing illucinations!

The Year 7 students have thoroughly enjoyed exploring this play and it was a great success.

Verve Dance CompanyOn Wednesday 18th June, Verve Dance Company, the post-graduate dance company from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance performed a programme of four contemporary dance pieces. The dances were extremely varied ranging from the abstract piece by Lea Anderson to the beautiful “Ocean” choreographed by the talented, up and coming choreographer Jamaal Burkmar. The students were blown away by this piece, with one Year 10 student describing what she saw as ‘breathtaking’.

We all left the performance inspired and feeling extremely privileged to have hosted this company of talented, wonderful dancers on Fallibroome’s own stage.

Urban ShowcaseAn excellent way to end the academic year, our second Urban Showcase provided an opportunity for our Street Dancers and Breakdancers to create and perform new choreography as a celebration of the work they have produced this year and the individual progress made by the students under the guidance of Ron Case and Becky Lane.

Fallibroome hosted the first East Cheshire Street Dance Competition on April 3rd. The

competition, organised by Amy Myers of Silk Dance School on behalf of East Cheshire Council, involved over 15 primary and secondary schools . For the first time, the Fallibroome’s Fusion Dance Company and the Boys’ Dance Company performed together in a high energy, creative Street Dance sequence. The students were place second overall, which was a fantastic achievement.

‘Angels’ At The LowryOn Friday 2nd May the cast and crew of ‘Angels’ entered the exciting second stage of the National Theatre’s Connections Festival by performing at the Lowry Theatre in Salford Quays. It was a truly memorable experience and our young actors and stage crew were treated like

real professionals. We arrived at the stage door and were treated to a complimentary drink in the theatre’s Green Room cafe before being shown to our rehearsal space and dressing room. We then moved into the Studio for our technical rehearsal with professional lighting technicians (under the guidance of our very own Oliver Chilton!) and National Theatre Associate Director James Blakey,

before performing to a packed audience at 5pm. It was definitely our best performance yet as the cast and crew rose to the challenge of performing on a professional stage. Sadly, we were not selected to take ‘Angels’ to the National Theatre in London, but the students should still be immensely proud of what they have achieved. Well done and a huge ‘Thank you!’ from Mrs Munro.

Year 8 Italy TripStudents from Year 8 enjoyed a trip to the Sorrento area ofItaly. They hiked up to the Vesuvius crater, looked round

Pompeii, enjoyed the beauty of the Isle of Capri and visited Solfatara and Herculaneum.

It was so hot at the shallow volcanic crater at Pozzuoli near

Naples, it was possible to boil water on the ground!

Outdoor Pursuits News

As usual, the summer term has been a busy one for the Outdoor Pursuits Department.

We have completed both the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh practice and assessment expeditions and we

are now getting ready for the Gold assessment expedition in the Isle of Man. We are also eagerly awaiting the water sports holiday to Tossa de Mar at the end of Investigations Week.

Our Bronze D of E participants had very good weather for both of their expeditions. They did very well navigating around areas in the northern Peak District. We did not have any major incidents

other than a few broken bags and one pair of boots where the soles fell off part way through the first day – luckily we always carry spares of everything! The Bronze groups especially enjoyed their time in the Staffordshire area and found walking over The Roaches particularly inspiring. The D of E staff are very proud of these participants and look forward to seeing their sections completed on the eDofE website soon.

Our Silver D of E participants had to navigate around the southern area of the Peak District. Again, the students were exemplary, both in terms of their team work as well as their skills with a map and compass. The participants had to walk up some pretty steep dales as well as facing other challenges such as cows who wanted to make friends with

them! The D of E Staff cannot wait to see their presentations – the students seemed to have a lot of fun collecting the material for them.

Our Gold D of E students are about to embark on a big adventure to the Isle of Man. Whilst there, they will have to navigate around the island during the five days of their

expedition. Students have chosen to complete projects on tourism on the island as well as looking at the natural flora and fauna. Once they have completed their expedition, they will return to the Venture Centre on the island where they will participate in activities such as archery, gorge walking and coasteering.

We are all very excited about the upcoming water sports activity holiday. We will be staying at Tossa de Mar and participating in paddle boarding, snorkelling, rafting, sailing and kayaking to name but a few activities. Just a reminder to those students who are going that they need to be at Manchester Airport terminal on Sunday 20th July at 4.45 am. Please don’t forget the sun cream, guys!

All the staff who volunteer their time for either D o f E or an activities holiday/session have been very impressed by the enthusiasm, maturity and good humour shown by those students who they have worked with. They wish to say huge congratulations to these students on all that

they have achieved this year and wish them well for the future, especially our Year 13s. For those students who are yet to join them in these activities or wish to continue joining in them, the staff cannot wait to work with you!

I hope that everyone has an excellent summer and remember, I am always open to ideas for future activities!

Parliament Trip Very early one rainy morning in May, a group of Year 8 students and staff left school on a RESPECT trip to visit the Houses of Parliament. After a 4D cinema show, we began our tour with all of us being checked by security, airport style! We were taken round in groups of 15 by a

tour guide who took us into the House of Lords and the House of Commons, which were both in session. We were able to see first hand where the Queen sits when she opens Parliament, where our M.P.s debate and make laws and where the British Government operates from.

and interviewed Jack Newby and Nomi Fischer about their views of the tour and of politics in general. After that we headed for a trip on the London Eye before hitting the road back to Macclesfield.

Once again, Fallibroome students were very well behaved and were excellent ambassadors for the school.

During our workshop in a debating chamber, our students’ knowledge was tested with an interactive quiz and they also debated an idea for a new law.

At this point, we had a pre-arranged visit from Radio 4 who recorded some of our debate

During the May half term holiday, 25 Year 7 and 8 students went to the Plas Menai National Watersports Centre near Caernarfon in Wales to have a go at sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and a high ropes course. The action-packed programme was fun and exciting, taking students out of their comfort zone and providing experiences that will stay with them long afterwards.

Everyone got soaked more than once but the warm weather meant that all enjoyed themselves and nobody got hypothermia!

South African Celebration EveningThis term saw the fifth annual celebration of our partnership with Grabouw and Dennegeur Primary in South Africa. Guests enjoyed South African food and drink and browsed the stalls selling crafts designed by students from Fallibroome, Mottram and Grabouw High School.

Entertainment on the night included African music workshops and street dance workshops and performances from year 2 at Mottram Primary. There were presentations by Tom Melling and Conor O’Keefe in year 13 about their recent work experience visit to South Africa. The highlight of the evening was a performance of the charity single written by Tom Melling ‘Ons Land Afrika’ which was performed by over 50 students on the night including students from Fallibroome, Mottram and Grabouw via the wonders of technology.

We raised a fantastic £800 on the evening which will make it possible to continue the sponsorship of students to attend Grabouw. Thank you to staff and students who supported the evening to make it such a success.

Year 9 students took part in the annual drama-geography cross curricular day in June.

The aim was to investigate ‘refugees’ through drama to gain a better understanding of who they are, why they emigrate and what life is like for them: before and after.

Excellent input from Shelterbox and professional actors made this day come alive! One Year 9 student commented: “This was a great day, I’ve learnt so much!”They explored two different rooms, each with multiple

activities from: building latrines, experiencing what life is like living in a small tent, making the decision to stay or go to questioning a dictator!

It was an enriching experience for the pupils, the visitors and both the Drama and Geography departments, who together raised £200 for Shelterbox which supports refugees.

Community Council UpdateOn the 13th May we had our annual conference at the Chamber of Commerce in Macclesfield. We have lots of new members this year who were raring to go and had a fun afternoon being welcomed into the Council.

We are looking forward to next year when we will be helping to improve the school for everybody, fundraising, and organising events for us and the primary schools. We have

recently helped to organise the Mini Commonwealth Games for the feeder primary schools and completed some science visits to the feeder primary schools.

The International Council have been organising events to help celebrate South Africa evening and the Leadership Council have been investigating the new Canteen and Sixth Form Centre and reporting their findings through the Community Assemblies.

Remember if you have any suggestions on ways to improve the school or events you would like staged please get in touch with a Council member.

Invigilators Bid A Fond Farewell to Mrs Watt

Page 68

Summer 2014Page 69

Page 70: Summer newsletter 2014

Thank you and goodbye to two Fallibroome stalwarts: Mrs Joy Watt and Mrs Helen Law

Two of Fallibroome’s longest serving teachers will retire this year after a combined sixty years of service.

Mrs Watt joined Fallibroome in 1981 as a Home Economics teacher and has served the school with distinction in a variety of roles including taking responsibilities for Textiles and a brief spell as acting Head of Year. Mrs Watt was appointed by the school’s original Headteacher, Mr Hughes and has made a sterling contribution to our success through the eventful years of Mr Batson and my time in charge.

As well as demonstrating her passion for her subject, Mrs Watt has been an outstanding Examinations Officer. This complex role demands organisational skills of the highest order and I know that students, staff and parents have valued Mrs Watt’s attention to detail and support over the years. Mrs Watt has our sincere thanks for her contribution to our success and our very best wishes for the future.

Mrs Law joined Fallibroome in 1984 after starting her career at Hazel Grove School. She took over the leadership of our RESPECT department in 1993 and influenced the growth of a department that has had a significant impact on the distinct culture and ethos of Fallibroome over the years.

This was clearly expressed by Ofsted Inspectors last year who noted that our ‘promotion of students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is exceptionally good’.

Mrs Law’s leadership and commitment will be missed as she pursues new interests and challenges. She has our grateful thanks for her excellent contribution to our success over the years.
