Welcome

Lancaster District’s Children and Young People’s Trust (LDCYPT) is one of 12 district boards that contributes to the overarching Lancashire-wide Children’s Trust Board.

One of the key priorities for the LDCYPT has been supporting the planning, coordination and delivery of a wide range of activities for children and young people of all ages and abilities during the long summer holidays.

All the information about the activities is included in this supplement so why not try something new this summer? There should be something to suit everyone’s interests and pocket!

Booking Information

Bookings can be taken in person or by phone from Tuesday 1 July.

1. To book and pay in personBookings with cash and card payments can be made in person by visiting Salt Ayre Sports Centre between 8am and 9pm Monday to Friday, or between 8.30am and 6pm Saturday and Sunday.

Be sure to have a fully completed booking form (available on our website at www.lancaster.gov.uk/holidayprogramme) for each applicant and your payment.

2. To book and pay by phone (payments of £2.50 or more only)To book and pay for your activities by phone, call the Holiday Activity Programme Booking and Information Line on 01524 842493 - Monday to Friday, 9am to 4.30pm, or 01524 847540 – Monday to Thursday, 9am to 8pm and Friday, Saturday and Sunday 9am to 5pm. Our friendly staff will guide you through the booking process.

Additional InformationActivity information - We strongly advise that all participants wear suitable clothing for the activity that they are due to take part in. Information about suitable clothing or requirements for each session can be found on each activity entry.

Disabled access - Parents and carers are advised to contact individual providers directly to assess whether specific activities are accessible for children and young people with additional needs and/or disabilities. Whilst providers would wish to be inclusive, it is important that they should be made aware of the nature of any additional needs and/or disabilities so that appropriate support can be put in place to enable the child or young person to participate.

During the two hours of mayhem you’ll absolutely love racing alongside either the Pirate Ghost Ship or the obliterator, or having fun with our huge range of pool inflatables. The thrilling waterslide will be open as well as the spa pool. With music, fun and games you are guaranteed to have a wonderful time.

Please note that you cannot pre-book this activity, Tickets can only be purchased at 9.45am on the day, with the session starting at 10am. Only competent swimmers are allowed on the inflatable as it is in two metre deep water. The minimum height for using the slide is 1.3m. Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the session.

Crazy assault course challenge – NEW!

If you fancy a physical challenge then this activity will test your fitness to the limits. Taking you through a number of challenges including obstacles to climb over, climb under and even through. Team work, fitness and fun is the aim of this activity.

Crazy football golf – NEW!

If you love football but want a challenge then this is a great new sport. Combining the skills of football with the tactics and shot selection of golf. You will play your way around a giant nine hole golf course but instead of using a club you will use your feet to pass, chip and putt the football into the hole.

Please ensure you wear suitable clothing (football boots or trainers) for this outdoor activity (on grass) and also bring a drink. Meet at Salt Ayre Sports Centre reception.

Crown Green Bowling

Regent Park

Bowls is a great sport that’s suitable for all. The session teaches you the basics of the game and lets you test your new skills in a number of fun games and activities.

Learn how to dive with our fully qualified swimming teacher. Learn how to perform sitting, standing dives, dive through hoops and dive down to the bottom of the deep end for treasure.

Dodgeball

You’ve seen the movie now why not give it a go? This is one of the most madcap and fun sessions you’ll ever join in. First of all you will practice some of the basic skills needed, then it’s into a series of dodgeball matches you’re sure to enjoy.

Extreme sports - indoor skydiving, climbing and snow sports

Calling all you adrenaline junkies! Test your nerves with two indoor skydives at Airkix (airkix.com) where you’ll experience the thrill of skydiving indoors. After you’ve landed, it’s time to hit the real snow slopes at Chill Factore with an hour’s skiing lesson, then an hour of snow fun where you can take part in any of the following activities: Tubing, luging, sledging, snow carving and airboarding. Finally it’s time to test your head for heights with an hour on the climbing wall.

All the activities are supervised by experienced, qualified coaches and all the equipment is supplied (excluding clothing – see below what you need to supply). This activity would normally cost you around £90, however we can offer it to you for the bargain price of only £36. You must have gloves, waterproof jacket and waterproof bottoms and wear clothes which fully cover arms and legs whilst doing this activity and bring a spare change of clothes. Please note you must have laced up trainers. Transport is included - please meet at Morecambe Town Hall reception and bring a packed lunch. Coach pick-up in Lancaster is also an option - ask for more details when booking.

Fencing

Come and learn the noble art of fencing and take your first steps to becoming the next Musketeer – ‘all for one and one for all’. This introductory session will teach you all the correct techniques you will need to complete the fencing competition at the end of the session. This course is ideal for beginners.

Fifa 14 Xbox competition and 5-a-side football

Loads of fun and silly football games aimed at improving your skills and having a great time. You will be put into teams for relay races and other games and towards the end of the session a series of matches will be played to put your skills to good use. Small prizes can be won on the day.

Try your hand at this exciting Olympic sport. After learning the skills needed for this fast paced game, take part in your very own handball match in Happy Mount Park.

This activity is for anyone aged between 8 and 12 years who want to learn the basic skills of tennis. During this session you will learn the forehand, backhand, volley and serve. You will then get a chance to try your newly developed skills in the end of session competition. All equipment will be provided.

Junior lifeguard Training

Bring the whole family along to experience kayaking on our local river. This activity will include teaching you various strokes followed by a short journey and finishing with some games. This activity is ideal for beginners or those with only a little experience.

Waterproofs, towel, warm clothing and a change of clothes are required. Please remember to bring a change of footwear as well. Meet at 33rd Lancaster Scout Hut, Halton Road, Lancaster. Please bring a drink and snack. Please also note that there is a maximum of two adults per child and a maximum of two children per adult for this activity.

This short course is aimed at children who cannot yet ride or still use stabilisers.

Please bring a roadworthy bike which allows the seat to be lowered so that your child can get his/her feet flat on the ground and suitable clothing and helmet for being outdoors. Please remove the stabilisers and the pedals before arriving at the session. Children must be accompanied by an adult who may be asked to assist.Please bring a waterproof jacket and a drink for this outdoor activity. In a fun and less pressurised environment for the younger child, this session should prove to be an enjoyable introduction to football in which they will learn new skills and socialise and interact with other children their age just starting off in football. Filled with fun and easy to understand games and coaching scenarios this could be the perfect starter for your child.

NERF wars – NEW!

Let the battle commence! In two teams you will be armed with the very latest in NERF weapons including the rough cut, rampage, retaliator, crossbow and strongarm. With these weapons you will then compete in the NERF wars arena battling to be the surviving team. Games including capture the flag, last man standing, hostage rescue and mayhem will ensure that you enjoy this action-packed activity. Safety glasses are provided.

Super summer fun sports camp

Here’s something you won’t want to miss, a week long fun sports camp for kids aged 8 to 12 featuring loads of different sports spread over five days. It’s going to be the most fun you’ll have had all summer. You simply cannot afford to miss is. Each day is split into two sessions with lunch in between (which is supervised but not provided). Monday is football and dodgeball, Tuesday inflatable fun and indoor hockey, Wednesday is racket sports and kwik cricket, Thursday is inflatable fun and Danish long ball and Friday is mini Olympics and waterpolo. On Tuesday and Thursday please do not forget your swimming kit.

Please wear appropriate clothing for sport. To use the giant inflatable you must be a competent swimmer as it is in 2m deep water. If not there are lots of inflatables to use. Please note that days cannot be booked individually – only as a course.

You are attached to a zip line at all times and this controls your speed so even if you are an expert or total beginner you get to experience the thrill of this amazing sport. Paddleboarding is a great way to relax after wakeboarding and involves standing on a giant surf board and paddling yourself along using a full length single paddle.

Waterproofs, towel, warm clothing, hat, gloves and change of clothes (including footwear) required. Transport is provided. Meet at Morecambe Town Hall. Please remember to bring a packed lunch. Lancaster coach pick-up is an option - ask for more details.

Once again 12th Century Re-enactment Society Historia Normannis, are returning to Lancaster Castle to show us what medieval life in a 12th Century castle was really like.

See authentic cooking with recipes from the period, enjoy the armoury exhibit and see soldiers and militia training for war in the courtyard. Have a look around what a camp would look like on campaign and visit the Earl’s Pavilion Tent and see how the Medieval elite live!

Come and meet a 17th century soldier to learn what life was like during the English Civil War. Take part in a pike and musket drill and armour. Join in one of our hands-on workshops to learn a 17th century craft and take your finished piece of work home.

World War One

Thu 14-08-14 11am – 3pm

Join our WW1 officers as they take you on ajourney back in time. Discover the joys of square bashing and handle some basic equipment. Try your hand at some trench art and take your finished piece home.

Roman

Thu 21-08-14 11am – 3pm

Come along to meet a Roman soldier. Handle arms and armour and learn about building and engineering. Learn a Roman craft and take your finished piece of work home.

Medieval

Thu 28-08-14 11am – 3pm

Watch a weaponry demonstration then handle medieval arms and armour. Draw a shield using your own heraldry designs and learn how to braid yarn using a medieval lucet.

All events take place from 11am to 3pm (Workshops run on the hour).

Activities in the courtyard are free. Indoor craft workshops are £2.50 per child (one accompanying adult free per paying child). Numbers are limited so pre-booking is recommended. To book telephone 01524 64998 or call in at the castle shop.

Justice

Performers will be bringing to life how the justice system operated hundreds of years ago. The live actor experience will take visitors on a 45 minute live, interactive walk, culminating in discovering the fate of the ‘accused’.

Tours start from under the Clock Tower. This attraction features strobe lighting, prolonged darkness and confined spaces. There may also be areas of uneven flooring due to the structure and age of the castle. People of a nervous disposition or are pregnant are advised not to participate in the Justice experience.
