HERE ARE 10 SUMMER HEALTH TIPS TO BEAT THE HEAT: b 1. DRINK PLENTY OF LIQUIDS Drink eight or more 8-ounce glasses per day of water and/or fruit juices every day to stay hydrated. b 2. AVOID CAFFEINATED AND ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES Alcohol, soda, coffee and even tea can leave you dehydrated quickly. If at all possible, try to reduce the amount of these beverages, especially during hot weather. Plain or flavored water is a good substitute. b 3. DRESS APPROPRIATELY Wear loose-fitting clothes in natural fabrics like cotton. Dress in light colors that will reflect the sun and heat instead of darker colors that will attract them. b 4. WEAR SUNBLOCK When outdoors, protect your skin from damage by wearing hats, sunglasses and a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. b 5. STAY INDOORS DURING EXTREME HEAT In extreme heat and high humidity, evaporation is slowed and the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature which can lead to serious conditions. b 6. SEEK AIR CONDITIONING If you do not have air conditioning in your home, go somewhere that does. A movie theater, the local library, the mall, a friend or relative’s home or a community senior center are all good options. b 7. AVOID EXTREME OUTDOOR HEAT If you need to get out of the house and do not drive, call a taxi, a friend or a transportation service. Do NOT wait outside for the bus in extreme heat. b 8. TAKE A COOL SHOWER OR BATH If you are absolutely unable to leave the house and do not have air conditioning, take a cool bath or shower to lower your body temperature on extremely hot days. b 9. KEEP YOUR HOME COOL Temperatures inside the home should not exceed 85 degrees Fahrenheit for prolonged periods of time. b 10. SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE Know the signs of heat stroke (for example: flushed face, high body temperature, headache, nausea, rapid pulse, dizziness and confusion) and take immediate action if you feel them coming on. continued on page 3 b

Tips forTravelingwith Diabetes

WHEN YOU GET THERE• Wear comfortable shoes and socks at all times. Never go barefoot and check your feet daily. If there are any signs of infection or inflammation, get medical care immediately.

• Be sure to test frequently since new foods and increased activity can affect your blood sugar levels.

• If you are more active than usual, take along snacks when hiking or sightseeing in case of low blood sugar.

• Watch what you eat and drink. Avoid water overseas, including ice cubes made from tap water.

3

PACKING TIPS • Pack at least twice as much of your medications and blood testing supplies.

• Pack all of your medications and blood testing supplies in yourcarry-on bag, so that your medication is always with you.

• Have a prescription from your doctor for medications in case of an emergency.

• Wear your medical ID that notes you have diabetes and use insulin (if you do).

• Carry snacks such as crackers, peanut butter, fruit, and/or some form of sugar (hard candy or glucose tablets) in case of low blood sugar.

• If going overseas, get a list of English-speaking foreign doctorsthrough the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers at www.iamat.org.

According to the National Institute of Aging, health andlifestyle may raise the threat of heat-related health issues. These health factors may increase the risk for seniorsduring the summer heat:

b Poor circulation, inefficient sweat glands, and changes in the skin caused by normal agingb Heart, lung, and kidney diseases, as well as any illness that causes weakness or feverb High blood pressure or other conditions that require changes in diet; for example, people on low-salt diets may face an added risk (but don’t use salt pills without asking your Primary Care Doctor)

b The inability to perspire caused by some drugs, including diuretics, sedatives, tranquilizers, and certain heart and blood pressure medicinesb Taking several drugs at once for various conditions; (but don’t just stop taking them without talking with your Primary Care Doctor)b Being substantially overweight or underweightb Drinking alcoholic beverages

Be sure to stay cool and hydrated thissummer. Seek immediate medical care if you are ever experiencing any health issuesrelated to the summer heat. Wishing you ahealthy and happy summer! b
