BRINGING QUALITY MUSIC EDUCATION TO CHILDRENAGES NEWBORN THROUGH 7 YEARS SINCE 1989.

The cities of Bryan and College Station will offer several activities to keep kids active while on their summer break.

College StationThe Lincoln Recreation

Center will offer its annual summer program from June 2 to Aug. 8 from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., for children ages 6 to 15. Registration must be done in person at the recreation center and the cost is $50 per resident or $100 per non-resident.

Program activities will include local and out-of-town field trips; athletic and lifetime sports camps;

high-yield enrichment and fitness activities; outdoor recreation and fun in the parks; creative arts and crafts; indoor games and tournaments; performing arts; learning enhancement opportunities; healthy foods and nutrition for kids; character building and summer safety; and water fun at Lincoln Splash Park.

“This summer is going to be real exciting for kids with a wide array of new programs that will appeal to all interests,” said Kelli Nesbitt, marketing coordinator for the city’s

Parks and Recreation Department. “Beyond the traditional sports camps, our new programs will include Outdoor Wilderness Survival Camp, Mad Scientist Fun Camp, Sea Hunt, Snow Day in June, Pirates and Princesses, Hogwarts Academy, Angry Birds and more.”

The Outdoor Wilderness Survival Day Camp for Kids will be offered June 16 to June 20 and July 21 to July 25, from 9 a.m. to noon. The camp, which is for children ages 7 to 13, will cost $125 per week and

will be located at Stephen C. Beachy Central Park. Campers will be taught outdoor survival skills and play an array of games to increase their awareness of the outdoors.

The Mad Scientist’s Fun Camp, for ages 6 to 12, will be held June 16 and June 17 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Southwood Community Center. Campers will learn with hands-on experiments to explore biology, chemistry and physics. Lessons will be examined on topics such as magnetism, motion, states of matter, chemical reactions and

discovering the marvels of all of five senses. The cost will be $65 per day or $120 for both days.

Other programs will include Snow Day in June, which will feature manmade snow to play in; Pirates and Princesses, where each camper will dress in pirate or princess attire, make quick sand and create a treasure chest; Hogwarts Academy, where students will make dragon drool and invisible ink, and experiment with “potions”; and Angry Birds, where campers will utilize various building materials and

slingshot “birds” made from a variety of different mediums, such as water balloons, foam balls and paper mache pinatas. For more information on these programs, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 979-764-3486.

Several aquatic programs will also be offered this summer for children. The Junior Lifeguard and Water Safety Program will be offered June 2 through June 26 and July 7 through July 31. The cost is $75 per session, and is for ages 9 to 14. Classes are from 5:30

p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Adamson Lagoon. Any swimmer who can swim the length of a 25-yard pool (any stroke) and is in the College Station School District or lives in a city that does not have a swim team is invited to join the Tsunami Swim Team. For more information on the swim team, call 979-764-3486 or visit http://www.cstx.gov/.

The city will also offer swim lessons. “One of the core programs of the Parks & Recreation Department is swim lessons,” Nesbitt said. “Swimming is an important life skill that all children should learn early on. There are so many benefits in learning to swim, and your child will get pleasure from the ability throughout childhood and into adulthood. Not only is it great for their health, but it could one day save their life.”

Swim lessons are provided for children 6 months old to adults. For a complete swim lesson schedule, call 979-764-3540 or visit http://cstx.gov/.

Adamson Lagoon will offer summer events

such as Shipwrecked Lagoon, where swimmers can dress like a pirate and get in free from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on June 18; Treasure Hunt, which will feature pirate games from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on June 25; and Christmas in July, where swimmers will be able to decorate an ornament and take a picture with Santa on July 30.

Other athletic programs offered through the city include Hershey’s Track and Field Games on May 17 at 10 a.m.; Summer Track and Field, which begins June 2; and Challenger Bowling, which begins the beginning of June. S.P.O.R.T.S Summer Camps, which is designed to introduce kids to a variety of

sports, will be held in June. This is for children ages 3 to 12 and will feature lessons on golf, tennis, disc golf and soccer.

For more information on children’s programs offered through the City of College Station this summer, contact the parks and recreation department at 979-764-3486.

BryanThe City of Bryan will

offer its annual Camp H.E.R.O. for ages 5 through 12, from June 9 through Aug. 15. According to the city’s website, this camp promotes health and self-esteem, while keeping children active through exciting games, field trips and swim days. A new theme will lay out the activities each week, as children learn skills such as first-

aid, leadership and fitness.

The camp, which will begin at 7:30 a.m. and end at 6 p.m. each day, will cost $100 per week for the first child and $90 per week for each additional child, or $25 per child per day. For more information on this camp or to register, call the Parks and Recreation Department at 979-209-5528 or visit www.bryantx.gov/.

The city will also offer the Summer Parks Program, which will feature activities such as swim days, kickball tournaments and arts and crafts. This program is for ages 5 through 12 and is from June 9 through July 18. There is no cost for these activities, and lunch will be provided. Activities will be held at Bonham, Haswell, Henderson,

Tanglewood and Villa West parks. For more information on this program, call 979-209-5528 or visit www.bryantx.gov.

Hershey’s Track and Field Games will be held at Merrill Green Stadium on May 17 at 10 a.m. According to the city’s website, the mission of Hershey Track and Field Games is to provide a quality recreation and school program where children have fun and are introduced to physical fitness through basic track and field events, such as running, jumping and throwing. Registration will be held April 15 through May 16 at the Bryan

Parks and Recreation Department. For more information call 979-209-5528 or email [email protected].

Bryan Aquatics will also offer swim lessons for ages 3 to adults and for parents with infants ages 6 months to 36 months. Registration for summer swim lessons begins May 4. For the summer swim lessons schedule, call 979- 209-5222 or visit http://www.bryantx.gov.

will provide a diverse selection of music to the park,” said Kelli Nesbitt, marketing coordinator for the city’s Parks & Recreation Department. “May 3 is a great way to kick off Cinco De Mayo with a performance from Del Castillo, an Austin-based Latin rock band.”

Johnson is expected to bring a large crowd, Nesbitt added, with Texas country music, such as his popular song, “Dance Her Home.” Wertz’s songs are soulful, singer-songwriter pop music. He has played with artists such as Ben Folds, Jamie Cullum and One Republic.

Nesbitt said the music series started 13 years ago, when the city

partnered with College Station Utilities to bring large-scale concerts to “a hometown venue.”

There are no seats at the amphitheater, so guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets if they wish. They can also bring coolers (48 quarts or smaller) containing refreshments, but glass containers are not allowed.

“Bring your family and friends to enjoy a night of music under the stars,” Nesbitt said. “While food will be available for purchase, concert-goers are welcome to bring a picnic supper to enjoy, as well as lawn chairs or blankets for seating.”

Besides refreshments, souvenir shirts will also

be on sale. Parking is available at Post Oak Mall, and handicap parking will be located off of Colgate Drive.

For more information, including music samples from the artists and links to their websites, visit cstx.gov/starlight.

Several children’s programs will be offered at libraries and museums in the Bryan-College Station area to help keep kids active and engaged during the summer break.

LiBrarieSThe Bryan-College Station

Library System will offer several programs this summer. In addition to these programs, the Clara B. Mounce Public Library and the Larry J Ringer Library will offer summer reading logs for children to keep track of how many days they spend reading. Reading logs can be picked up at either library from May 19 through July 31, and children have until Aug. 31 to turn in completed reading logs. Logs are complete after 30 days of reading, which do not have to be consecutive; children also aren’t required to read for a certain amount of time each day, librarian Kendra Perkins said.

Perkins said children should continue reading during the summer.

“Research shows that school-aged children who do not read throughout the summer will experience a serious loss in reading achievement, resulting in a gap that widens with every successive school year, Perkins said. “In an effort to remedy this, the Bryan-College Station Library System is once again offering its annual Summer Reading Program. These free and fun educational events are designed to keep every child in our community learning and reading all summer long.”

Larry J. Ringer LibraryThe Larry J. Ringer Library,

1818 Harvey Mitchell Parkway South in College Station, will hold several children’s programs and family events over summer break.

On June 3, from 9 a.m. to 11

a.m., vehicles from the City of College Station-- a fire truck and a police car -- will be outside of the library for children to view. Animal Day will be held on June 10 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. outside, and children will be able to see animals, such as rabbits and miniature horses. Other programs will include the Texas A&M University Chemistry Road Show, Bug Day and Art Day.

Storytime will be offered on Wednesdays. Toddler Storytime will begin at 10 a.m. and Family Storytime will begin at 11 a.m.

In addition to these programs, other events and activities will include Superhero Academy for students in kindergarten through fourth grade, on May 30 from

2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.; a family scavenger hunt from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on June 21; a presentation of the play, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” presented by College Station ISD Summer Enrichment, on June 25 at 10 a.m.; and a puppet show at 10 a.m. on Aug. 2.

Several tween/teen programs will also be offered this summer. A pool party for this age group will be held July 28 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Adamson Lagoon. Teens/ tweens must attend at least one event at the library and have a signed permission slip to attend. Contact Kendra at 979-764-3416 or [email protected] for more information.

For more information on

children’s events contact Suzy or Cindy at 979-764-3416. Visit www.bcslibrary.org for a complete schedule.

Clara B. Mounce Public Library

The Clara B. Mounce Public Library, 201 East 26th St. in Bryan, will hold several children’s and family events on Wednesdays in June and July. Programs include Animal Day on June 11 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.; Juneteenth Art Day on June 18 from 10 a.m. to noon; Dan Gibson: Storyteller and Musician on July 16 at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.; and Science Day Centers on July 23 at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Storytime will be held on Thursdays from June 5 to Aug. 7. Baby and

Toddler Storytime will begin at 10:15 a.m. and Ready-to-Read Storytime will begin at 10:45 a.m.

For more information about storytime and children’s events at the Mounce Library, contact Bobbee at 979-209-5600 or [email protected].

The library will also offer several tween events for fifth to seventh graders. Programs will include Make it with Science on June 12, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Chemistry Experiments on July 3, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Marshmallow Madness on Aug. 7, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. A teen/tween pool party will be held Aug. 21 (date pending), from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Bryan Aquatic Center. Library and MuseumThe George Bush Presidential

Library and Museum, 1000 George Bush Drive West in College Station, will offer its annual Exploring History Summer Camp from July 7 through Aug. 8 on weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Our annual Exploring History Summer Camp program is a fun and educational way to engage with students and increase their awareness and understanding of history, government and other important subjects,” said Monica Lerma, education specialist at

the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum. “This year’s camp, ‘Fueling the Future’ ties in with our new exhibit ‘Offshore Drilling: The Promise of Discovery’ and challenges students to think about our energy usage and sources now and in the future.”

Each week-long camp will feature “Energy and Me” – types of energy on day one; “Renewable Resources” – solar, wind, hydro power, biomass” on day two; “Non-Renewable Resources” – fossil fuels and coal on day three; “Petroleum” – off-shore drilling on day 4; and “Conservation” on day five.
