What is SEI? SEI is a unique, one-of-a-kind 4-week experience that allows international students to improve their English, get acclimated to American education and culture, learn important life skills, prepare for the SAT, ACT, and TOEFL exams, visit prestigious American universities, and explore America!

International students ages 11-18 preparing to enter an American high school or international students who just want to improve their English!

Students will fly into Chicago, Illinois, and SEI classes will be held on the campus of Cedarville University in the midwestern state of Ohio and will include 9 days of travel to New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Cedarville UniversityThe Princeton Review has named Cedarville University as one of the best universities in the midwestern United States. Cedarville is home to 3,400 Christian undergraduate, graduate, and online students. The University is recognized for rigorous academic

programs, strong graduation and retention rates, accredited professional and health science offerings, and leading student satisfaction ratings.The University has a long history in China. Outside of North America and Brazil, there are more Cedarville alumni living and working in China than in any other country of the world.

QUICK FACTS

All students will stay in modern, air-conditioned dormitories on the university campus. Each student will have a roommate. Boys and girls will live on separate hallways in the dorm. No student is allowed in the opposite gender’s hallway or rooms at any time.

Students will eat 3 meals a day in the university cafeteria. The Cedarville cafeteria offers a spacious dining area with a fresh salad and fruit bars, traditional American food, sandwiches, Mexican food, and Asian dishes. Cedarville’s snack shop is also available for snacks during free time. Asian noodles and other snacks will be available in the dorm for purchase.

The town of Cedarville is in the quiet, safe, midwestern part of the country. Campus police officers monitor the campus 24 hours a day. Student safety throughout SEI is our #1 priority.

The dorms, classrooms, cafeteria, and entire campus is equipped with wireless connectivity for student’s laptops, tablets, and mobile devices. Students will be given time each day to contact their parents through email or video chat.

AUTHENTIC ASIAN MEALS

SEI 2014 Host

WAnet is pleased to welcome an award-winning Chinese chef to SEI this year. Xiaowei Hu was born in Hebei and graduated from Yangzhou University. He was a judge for a number of cooking contests in China and also the host and guest speaker for three famous cooking TV shows in China. He is now the chief chef of IF restaurant. Xiaowei will be cooking 2-3 meals per week for SEI students.

ClassesTesting & PlacementStudents will be tested on the first day to ensure proper class placement and again on the last day to measure progress.

English Classes Students will be placed in a class of 10-15 students led by engaging American teachers. Each class will also have teacher assistants to help in classroom activities and to work individually with each student. The majority of the time is devoted to active learning. Students will write every day. Students will read a variety of English texts to push them to their highest levels of reading comprehension. Students will speak in conversations, one-on-one, in small groups, and in various other settings.

WEEKLY AWARDSSEI presents weekly awards to students for their outstanding performance and character, including the Shakespeare Writing Award, Churchill Leadership Award, Aristotle Thinking Award, Carnegie Improvement Award, Jeremy Lin Activity Award, Amelia Earhart Risk Award, and Student of the Week.

SAT, ACT, and TOEFL Exam Preparation

AP SEI is available for returning students with iTEP SLATE Plus test scores of 3.0 or above. The curriculum focus will be continued English improvement, but will be structured more college-like than traditional regimented high school style. Each student will study a particular area of interest, do research in that area and create a final project. Each AP class will have 8-12 students and be led by an expert instructor. If accepted to AP SEI, students may select from the following AP courses:

In addition to a great academic education, the leaders of tomorrow must possess strategic life skills. The SEI Life Skills Curriculum will give each student an important foundation in 12 strategic areas:

Students will learn to merge strategy with content to gain a more complete understanding of the SAT, ACT, and TOEFL exams. Hours of instruction and practice exams will be provided to prepare students for these critical university entrance exams. Each student will take a full-length SAT test at the beginning of SEI and another SAT test at the conclusion of SEI. Students will receive group and individual instruction throughout the class sessions.

Fly into Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) on July 11 or 12 to be greeted by SEI staff at the airport! Students will ride on WAnet buses to Cedarville University and get settled into the dorms.

Students will conduct their 3 weeks of English study on the beautiful, safe, 400-acre campus of Cedarville University in Ohio. Students will live in modern university dorms, eat delicious food from the dining hall, and develop the skills necessary to be successful in American education and all of life.

Spend 3 days in the New York area, including options to visit Princeton University, NYU, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Times Square, 5th Avenue, Central Park, Broadway, and more!

Spend 3 days in San Francisco and visit Stanford University, UC-Berkeley, Alcatraz, and Silicon Valley, the home to the world’s most innovative and world-shaping technology companies such as Apple and Google.

Spend the final 3 days in the Los Angeles area with options to visit UCLA and USC, Hollywood, Disneyland, Universal Studios, and the beach!

SupervisionAll students will be supervised at all times. Special care will be given to younger students (ages 11-13) and others as needed.

Travel InformationAll flights to and from the student’s home country are the responsibility of the student’s family. Student must fly into Chicago (ORD) on July 11 or 12 and fly out of Los Angeles (LAX) on August 8. Clear flight information must be submitted to WAnet no later than June 5, 2014. A $200 fee will be assessed for travel information submitted after June 5. All travel within the United States during SEI on the travel week is included in the SEI cost. For students continuing on to a WAnet school after SEI, WAnet will add $250 to the student’s enrollment contract, then purchase a plane ticket on the student’s behalf from Los Angeles to their school.

What to BringStudents should bring plenty of clothing for warm summer weather, one formal outfit for the graduation ceremony, toiletries, passport and visa, I-20 form (if applicable), cell phone, computer (optional), school supplies (notebook, pens), and spending money (optional while at Cedarville University and at least $25-50 per day for the 9 days of travel). Students should deposit any extra money in the SEI bank at the start of SEI for safe-keeping.

Buying a Cell PhoneStudents will have the opportunity to purchase a brand new cell phone or SIM card and service plan within a few days of arriving at SEI. The SEI staff will assist in finding a cell phone solution that fits the needs of the student.

Communication With ParentsStudents will be given time each day to communicate with their parents through email, phone, or video chat online. Parents will receive updates from the SEI staff throughout the four weeks, including pictures and summaries of all the activities and classes.

What Kind of Visa Do I Need? Students attending SEI who are also attending a WAnet school after SEI will obtain an F-1 visa. The WAnet school will issue the student an I-20 form. Students who are only attending SEI will need to obtain a B-2 Visitor visa. WAnet is happy to supply each student with an official letter of invitation.

DisciplineStudents at SEI will be expected to demonstrate self-control, obedience, and respect at all times. Repeated failure will result in students being sent home without refund at the parents’ expense.
