We know the words of Handel’s Messiah and from that source we have learned a number of verses from the Hebrew Bible which we would probably have difficulty locating in the text itself. Even people who have a loose connection with the church know many words of our hymns. In our summer series on "Then Sings My Soul," I plan to reflect on four hymns of the church, and relate them to passages of scripture and allow the hymns to help us to understand these scripture passages, and allow the scriptures to expound the message contained in the hymns. Although this term is used, there is nothing common or mundane about this period of time in the way we typically use the word "ordinary." The term actually comes from the latin word ordinalis meaning to number in a series; therefore, the Sundays are counted sequentially until Advent. Do you remember what summer break was like as a child or teenager? I remember it being perhaps the most wonderful time of the year. The outdoor adventures were filled with fun and excitement making the chores of cleaning, mowing the lawn and gardening less of a burden. The baseball games, whether in an organized league on a carefully maintained baseball diamond, or an impromptu game on a crude baseball field in a neighbor's cow pasture are fond memories of my past. It was a wonderful time to read for entertainment rather than to fulfill a requirement. I remember spending time with friends whether at church events, or casually sitting and talking several times each week. It was a time of vacations when family members would drop in as they traveled to their vacation destination. In those visits came an awareness and knowledge of my extended family: grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, who they were and how the family related to each other. The term actually comes from the latin word “ordinalis” meaning to number in a series; therefore, the Sundays are counted sequentially until Advent. I was reminded of how extra ordinary this period of time, especially the summer, often is in our individual lives and the life of the church.

JULY 2018**No Regular Activities**

4 Ways to Stay Connected this Summer Southern Summers are the best! Backyard BBQs, beach vacations, watching fireworks under Vulcan, enjoying the evening sitting outside under the blinking lights of the fireflies, homemade ice cream, lazy days laying by the pool ... and the list goes on. I'm sure you have your favorite Summertime activities all lined up! Nothing is better than enjoying all the extra time with your family and friends.

As Summer rolls around, we all yearn to be out and about, but one of the places I still long to be is at Southside. Whether traveling for work or pleasure, missing a Sunday at Southside always disappoints. But how do you stay connected to church and to each other during these busy travel months? Here are some ideas for helping to stay connected to each other during the Summer....

1. Join us for Worship. Join us for each Sunday Morning inJune - July, 11:00 AM, for a time of worship, prayer, andteaching. Stay after for lemonade and cookies for an extraspecial treat as you catch-up with fellow church members andvisitors. For a quieter and more introspective worship andprayer experience, join us Thursday evenings in July (5:30 PM, Chapel) for contemplation and communion.

2. Join our Facebook Page. Stay connected to church activitiesand members through our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/southsidebaptistchurch). Post pictures ofyour trip!

3. Invite a Friend. Make use of those additional hours ofdaylight and invite a friend to Bible study, worship, and/orother church activity. What excuse would they have not tocome? They'll have plenty of daylight to sit by the pool afterchurch!

4. Reach out. Text, call, Tweet or do it that "old fashionedway"....send a postcard! However you want to connect, tell someone you are thinking about them. When you reach out, tell them how great your Summer is going! Maybe we can all send postcards to each other this Summer! The Post Office would love it and think of all the great travel stories we would read!

However you do it, reach out to someone letting them know how important they are to you and to our church. Invite them to be a part and let them know that God truly loves them. Wherever your travels take you this Summer, may your travels be fun and safe. Stay connected!

See you real soon, Rusty Bennett
