Spanish House Elementary Summer Camps 2017: Policies & Procedures

During Summer Camps hours, you may also contact our Summer Camp Director, Neysha López, at the number above or at [email protected]. Spanish House Elementary Summer Camps are offered for 1st-5th graders.

The priority registration deadline for Summer Camps is May 19, though registration is also offered throughout the summer. Camps that have not received the minimum number of students required for the class by the deadline may be cancelled. Notification of any class that has been cancelled will be made two weeks before its start date. Late registrations may be declined if camps are full, so please register online by the priority deadline.

Registration begins March 1st. The $50 Registration fee is due one week after registration. Fees are as follows:

$250 Half-day camp, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. or 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. $375 Full day camp, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Before Care 7:30 – 9:00 a.m. available for $15 per week. After Care 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. available for $25 per week.

Camp tuition is due one week before camp starts. No refunds will be offered after this date. For half day camps, students not picked up within 15 minutes of dismissal will be charged for After Care.

All students should bring clearly labelled sunscreen, insect repellent, and water bottle, along with one snack per camp session—i.e. students enrolled for the full day should bring two snacks, along with their lunch. Lunch boxes cannot be refrigerated, and microwaves

are not available. Students will eat under the supervision of camp teaching assistants. Please ensure that students use closed-toed shoes daily as well as comfortable, recess-appropriate clothing. Students are expected to follow and model Spanish House’s Core Values of Communication, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. Teachers will redirect students away from inappropriate behavior in a positive, supportive manner. However, Spanish House Elementary reserves the right to dismiss any child whose behavior is considered detrimental to any person or to the school.

Spanish House Elementary Summer Camps 20171. Architecture & Design: Students will explore iconic Spanish, Latin American and local architecture to

learn how architects design spaces, what tools they use and how their work impacts our lives. Through cooperative teamwork, creative problem-solving and design thinking, students will solve design challenges and make models using sketches, models, technology and art materials.

2. Basketball & Sports Skills: Students will learn the basic elements of basketball, including passing, dribbling, defense and, of course, shooting! They will learn the proper mechanics and rules of the game as they practice proper ball handling, sportsmanship and teamwork in a high-energy setting. Each day will include warm-up, stretching, indoor and outdoor activities, obstacles course, themed games, and team play.

3. Biology Lab: Students will explore cell biology and the properties of living organisms. With a variety of hands-on experiments, interactive games, authentic projects, engaging activities and helpful videos, students will learn about the structure and function of cells. Students will observe cells through a microscope and conduct experiments to learn how living things grow and thrive.

4. Book Club: Students will read and explore books through popular titles. They will participate in imaginative and hands-on activities which bring the stories to life, along with creative writing, games and word puzzles. Reading together, students will develop critical language arts skills like reading comprehension, character development and vocabulary acquisition in a fun, collaborative environment.

5. Chemistry Corner: Students will explore the basic building blocks of chemistry. With a variety of hands-on experiments, interactive games, authentic projects, engaging activities and helpful videos, students will learn about atoms, molecules, protons, electrons and other fun facts. In this camp, the students will also investigate and experiment to understand elements and the periodic table.

6. Instrumental Dance: In this class, students will study lyrical dance using props like fans, streamers, flags and shawls. The students will focus on creativity, self-expression and rhythmic movement through choreography and instrumental music.

7. Latin American Art: Students will explore various Latin American peoples and culture through creative, hands-on art activities. Incorporating drawing, painting, sculpture and more, they will also apply line, shape, color, texture, form, value and space to their creations.

8. Latin American Murals: Students will explore the elements of art through the works of famous muralists like José Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera and David Siqueiros, not to mention contemporary, local and youth artists. Students will investigate and analyze artistic design, color choice and visual composition. They will also apply line, shape, color, texture, form, value and space to create their own mural.

9. Math Minds: Students will participate in a comprehensive review of mathematical concepts, with an emphasis on hands-on manipulatives and problem solving, in a fun, energetic environment. They will practice number facts using games, techniques and apps, while developing problem-solving skills in real-life situations. Fractions, geometry, counting money and telling time are just some of the topics covered.

10. Origami Workshop: Students will learn the ancient, mindful art of Origami as they transform paper into creative, interesting shapes like animals, plants, flowers and more. They will practice math and science as they learn to read Origami designs and understand the geometry at the heart of the classic designs, all while practicing their listening and sequencing skills.

11. Poetry Circle: Students will read and explore various forms of lyrical and humorous poetry with a focus on rhythm, rhyme and figurative language. They will develop their creativity and confidence as writers reading and writing their own verse. Together, students will grow critical language arts skills like reading comprehension, creative writing and vocabulary acquisition in a fun, collaborative environment.

12. Robotics Challenge: Students will explore robots in all of their sizes, shapes and levels of complexity. They will investigate robots in their everyday lives, with a focus on the power of robotics and engineering. Independently and in teams, students will experiment, create and build robots to develop mechanical and design thinking.

13. Soccer & Sports Skills: Students will learn the building blocks of the sport, with emphasis on basic rules, movement, passing and receiving, and other offensive and defensive skills. The day will include games, drills, sportsmanship and teamwork. To improve strength and flexibility, each day will include warm-up, stretching, indoor and outdoor activities, obstacles courses and themed games.

14. Theatre and Drama: Students will learn to use their imagination, discover new ideas and work together through the basic elements of drama. Students will focus on self-expression and self-confidence through the magic of make believe.

15. Volleyball & Sports Skills: Students will learn the building blocks of the sport, with emphasis on serving, sets and volleys. The students will also warm up and stretch to promote healthy activity and learn the basic rules of volleyball. To improve strength and flexibility, each day will include warm-up, stretching, indoor and outdoor activities, obstacles courses, themed games and team sports.

16. Yoga Retreat: Students will practice yoga as a form of fitness providing benefits to the body and mind in a non-competitive environment. This class will help students work on balance, strength and flexibility, while building self-esteem and confidence. Students will learn classic poses while creating original poses of their own.
