36 SUMMER CAMP GUIDE March 2015

The glows give them away everytime, says Matt “Sully” Sul-livan.

“At night, you see the kid curl overand try to hide that ambient lighting, but it leaks everywhere,” says Sullivan, assistant camp director of Camp ChiefOuray for the YMCA of the Rockies.“You wait until they’re done, and theyroll back over, and you’re standingright there saying, ‘Give it here.’ “Sometimes the device under the

covers is a tablet, MP3 player or video-game system, says Sullivan, “But it’sthe phones, hands down, we see themost of.”Like most outdoorsy, sleep-away

camps across the county, CampOuray’s technology policy requests thatkids leave their devices at home, andit’s not surprising that campers pushback. When looking into how suchcamp policies are formed and work inaction, however, what’s more surpris-ing is who’s most likely to break therules (hint: It’s not always the kids) andthe interesting ways technology is usedbehind the scenes to keep parents moreinvolved.

Parental warningWhile the kid may be the one caught

with a screen in the dark, it seems thetrouble with no-tech policies oftenstems from campers’ parents. For the kids at Tomahawk Ranch,

operated by the Girl Scouts of Colo-rado, co-director Monica “Obi Joe”Gray says the girls find their no-tech-nology policy is a natural transition,as their rules are usually similar topolicies in place at schools. And forthose seeking to thwart those policies, the environment itself is usually deter-rent enough.“For one, we still don’t really have

service,” says Gray. “With some girlswho do bring their phones, within twodays or less, it doesn’t work anyway. There’s not power or outlets to chargethem, and so they have to give up andmove on with camp life.”Though Tomahawk Ranch hosts

about 200 girls per week in the sum-mer, Gray can think of only two occa-sions when campers couldn’t handleleaving their technology — or perhapsits sense of connectedness — behind. In fact, most camp professionals findit’s campers’ parents that have a hardertime letting go.“The kids are dependent on the

technology, sure, but it’s also the par-ents,” says Sullivan. “Numerous timesparents will give kids their cellphoneand slip (it) into their bag and say,‘Text me at night. Give me that quickupdate.’ They’re not used to being outof the loop.”For Miriam Shwartz, co-director

of Jewish Community Center’s RanchCamp, that parental paradox is all themore frustrating because her campprides itself on building values.“In fact, some parents go as far as

giving a dummy device that staff mem-bers can find, a second one so the childhas a back up,” she says. “They knowthey’re breaking rules and asking theirchild to break rules, and they’re OKwith that. It’s hard to talk about hon-esty and why rules are in place and thegood of the community when parentsare willing to go to those extremes andmake campers their accomplices.”

The real why of the rulesThese parents usually have good

motives, wanting only to keep in touchwith their child, but defying no-screenrules can actually also work againstmany of the valuable experiencescamp cultivates, including working onface-to-face communication and safelytest-driving independence.“I hear so often now how parents

are texting their kids constantly, tryingto make sure they’re OK and wherethey’re at,” says Shwartz, who thinkskeeping in touch can ruin the freedomof camp. “For some campers, this istruly the first environment in their lifewhere they’re given the opportunity to

make decisions without the input of aparent. It becomes such an importantpiece of growing up and maturing, having this ability to make decisionsand have failures and build resistance.”In other words, being out of touch is

good for child development.“Sometimes communication can

increase homesickness,” says BethMarkham, youth programs directorfor Walking Mountains Science Centercamps. “We want them to live in thatmoment and learn the importance ofdoing that and saving their stories andexperiences for their friends when theyget back home.”Devices are also status symbols at

camp, she says.“We do have to be careful about the

kids that do have those things versusthose that don’t,” she says. Ideally, camp should be egalitarian. “We don’twant anyone to feel left out. We wantfor all the students to have access.”The rules are designed to prevent

isolated or isolating use of technologyrather than general technical develop-ment. So no screens doesn’t meanno high-tech activities. For instance,Tomahawk Ranch offers a digital-photography and photo-editing classesand sometimes uses iPad astronomyapplications during evening events.

Tech that does workParents still feeling the urge to slip

their kid that cellphone might be reas-sured that while technology is beingkept out of kids’ hands, administratorsare often using high-tech tools behindthe scenes to keep families more con

nected.“We actually have one-way e-mail

now, which is where parents e-mail oursystem,” says the Girl Scouts’ Gray, who says the practice is becoming in-creasingly common at camps. “We takethat e-mail, print it off once a day, andgive it to their daughter in the form ofa letter. It’s like a modern mail call.”Camps are also using social media

to show parents closer to real timewhat their kids are up to.“We have an Instagram, we have

a Facebook page, and we also haveour website, and we will post on ourwebsite with a password-protectedsystem,” says Ouray’s Sullivan, stress-ing that camps with such sites shouldbe password protected for privacy andsafety. “Then we also have a You-Tube channel where we have differentweekly videos and things like that ofreally cool stuff like zip-lining, sunsets, evening activities, horseback riding.”They’re using newer technologies

to show how much fun traditionaloutdoor activities can be, and in theend, the latter activities are still a bigdraw for modern kids, who soon learnto live without their devices and per-haps to live a little better with fellowhumans.“When kids come to camp, we

want to make sure they’re unplugging... because they’re missing a lot ofinterpersonal, face-to-face interactionin their everyday lives,” says Sullivan.“At camp, they get a chance to look upand work on other skills that kids needtoday, like communication, collabora-tion and creativity.”
