In 2009 SBS has launched a brand new Film website which focuses on both international and local arthouse cinema in addition to the blockbuster releases.

In September the site reached 88,000 unique browsers and delivered 177,000 page impressions.

The site also features a broad range of video content delivering 85,000 video views in the month.

Summer Movie Audiences

Viewing of the Saturday Movie timeslot over the last summer period was up 6% with the targeted 25-54 demographic compared to Survey 2008.

All People audiences for the timeslot were up an additional 4% in the non survey period.

The increase in audience makes the time slot incredibly cost effective for reaching your target audience over the summer period .

SBS is continues to broadcast high quality first run content throughout the non ratings period.

This has resulted in significant audience success over the timeframe annually with the debut of a host of new programs every single year.

In Summer 2008/2009 the Saturday night line up (1800- 12mn) saw audiences increase 3% with both all people and 25-54s.

The Summer Blockbuster Movie two hour timeslot from Saturday 2200 was up 6% last summer with people 25-54 and up 4% with All People.

Overall the Summer Blockbuster Movie Season will be airing in a strong timeslot with a great lead in audience from SBS’s music quiz program RocKwiz.

It is a strong part of the Saturday night entertainment line up that experiences strong and consistent audiences across the non ratings period.

A new initiative launched earlier this year, the SBS Film site has continued to grow content since its inception.

The film continues to experience strong month on month growth as consumers continue to find the new website.

In September 2009 the site delivered 177,000 page impressions to 88,000 Unique Browsers.

It is also delivering a wide range of video content with 85,000 video views achieved in the month of September 2009.

The site features a wide range for relevant content including movie trailers, blogs, interviews, articles, latest releases, DVD releases and information on upcoming movies on SBS.

Overall the site is expected to continue with its growth trajectory as increasing numbers of users find the site and engage with the film content.

Mel Gibson’s epic movie looking at the turbulent end of the Mayan civilisation in a time of drought and sickness within their community.

On screen the film is lush with the jungle setting, rivers an waterfalls shown as part of the community as well as the epic historical setting.

A brilliant ensemble cast of inexperienced and unknown actors, they are coaxed to their strong performances by the strong directorial work of Mel Gibson.

The movie was nominated for a swag of awards in 2007 including 3 Academy Awards, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe.

At its heart this is a story about escape, love, superstition and new beginnings that keeps audiences on edge for every minute of the drama.

French thriller ‘Tell No One’ is a compelling story of lost love, suspected murder and a search for the truth.

The movie was nominated for 9 Cesar Awards, the French national film awards, in 2007 with a total of 4 won.

This story was adapted from a novel by American writer Harlan Coben and the English rights have been purchased to go into production in 2010.

Doctor Alex Beck lost his wife to a serial killer, 8 years on he receives and email that appears to have recent surveillance footage of his wife alive.

His subsequent search leads him on a heart stopping journey that sees him running from police, rescued by a gangster and uncovering the mystery surrounding the disappearance of his wife.

The Host

Monster film ‘The Host’ is an action packed drama from South Korea. It was released on a record number of screens in its home country, is the highest grossing South Korean fil of all time and had been seen over 13 million times at the end of its release. The plot is set years after the US Army base releases toxic chemicals into the Han River as the local area is tormented by a huge amphibian monster.

As panic sets in all those who have come into contact with the beast are quarantined until on family busts out and goes on a search for the creature.

The special effects are world class and keep the action going while also providing the monster with a form and identity from early in the film.

Highly entertaining drama that will keep audiences watching to the thrilling and surprising conclusion.

Volver is from renowned director Pedro Almodovar and won 2 Awards at the Canned International Film Festival in 2006.

The movie stars Penelope Cruise as the hard-working and opportunistic Raimunda, mother of a teenage daughter who is coping since the death of her mother and grandmother in a mysterious fire years earlier.

As the movie progresses the unresolved issues within the family and their village come to the surface and these women are forced to seize control of their lives.

A wildly complex plot that in spite of its complexities leave the viewer with a lasting feeling of joy.

Pan’s Labryrinth

Winner 3 Academy Awards 2007, Pan’s Labyrinth begins as a young girl discovers and overgrown labryrinth and the ancient satyr Pan.

Our heroine, 10 year old Ofelia, becomes captivated by the satyrs stories of the fairy world which provide a welcome escape from her daily life.

It’s a dark tale which see’s Ofelia make a pact with Pan to save her mothers life. In order to succeed she must complete three challenges to prove her worth.

These challenges take her on a journey to another world where she must use her wits to overcome the creatures she find there.

The story is a haunting one set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War but softened by the eyes of a 10 year old girl.

Black Book

Summer Blockbuster Movie Season

9 January

Winner at the Venice Film Festival and nominated for a BAFTA, The Black Book is a fictional tale set in Holland during the second world war.

A young Jewish woman, Rachel, is hiding from the Nazi’s until her safe haven is destroyed by a stray bomb.

Her escape leads to her being taken in by the Resistance movement and becoming a key player in getting information from high places.

Amongst this back drop she becomes close with a Gestapo officer who she falls in love with and he returns her feelings.

As the war draws to a close Rachel is caught up in the ongoing tensions and has to prove her innocence to the incoming liberation forces.
