Virginia colonist, George Thorpe, is credited with distilling the first batch of whiskey made from corn, the ancestor of all corn-made Bourbon Whiskey and moonshine. In 1620, Thorpe distilled a batch of corn beer and made the first samples of what would become Bourbon Whiskey. Dedicate a day to exploring Virginia’s Bourbon roots. Make your way across the sky-blue bridge to DELTAVILLE and step into history at Stingray Point, which gets its name from the 17th century when Captain John Smith nearly died from a barb sting. Visit the Deltaville Marina to walk through a replica of the Stingray Point Lighthouse, originally built in 1853. Shop at J&W Seafood for a to-go lunch from their gourmet market and opt for a shrimp-stuffed baked. Don’t miss Antiques, Uniques & More for a vintage nautical shopping moment.

Journey next to GLOUCESTER, stopping at the Peace Frogs outlet for an obligatory t-shirt. Take a historical marker selfie at the Pocahontas statue near the Gloucester Courthouse, built around 1766. Spread a blanket at Yorktown Beach for a picnic, a dip, and a look into Cornwallis’ Cave. Legend has it that this cave (hidden near the beach) is where the British General, Charles Cornwallis, retreated during the Battle of Yorktown. Drive through the Colonial National Historical Park, which protects several historic sites, including Yorktown Battlefield, Yorktown Victory Monument and Jamestown. Also in YORKTOWN, the Watermen’s Museum illustrates the role the Chesapeake Bay watermen (people who make a living by fishing, crabbing and oystering) have played in shaping our nation.

Taste, tour, and be entertained at Eight Shires Coloniale Distillery in WILLIAMSBURG. Famously known as home of the Jamestown 1608 Single Malt Whiskey, Eight Shires distills water from Captain Smith’s original well, to make America’s only museum-certified whiskey. Also in Williamsburg, Copper Fox Distillery offers free tours on the half hour and tastings for a small fee. Travel back to the Tides Inn and sip a Bowman Brothers bourbon (made in Fredericksburg, VA) on the patio of Fish Hawk Oyster Bar. If the moonlight is right, you can catch a glimpse of cownose rays (brown, kite-shaped rays that visit the Chesapeake Bay in the summer) jumping and splashing in the creek.

Head “up county” to take an early morning 3.5-mile walk through 254 acres of Hickory Hollow Natural Area Preserve, home to rare orchids and wild turkeys. If you crave more scenic walks, plan to visit the nearby Hughlett Point and Dameron Marsh Natural Area Preserve, two Chesapeake Bay wetlands areas where you might even encounter bald eagles or osprey. Eight American presidents were born in Virginia, including George Washington. His mother, Mary Ball Washington, was a LANCASTER COUNTY native. Continue your day in the Lancaster County Courthouse Historic District at the Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library and

the Old Lancaster County Jail next door. Established in 1790, but temporarily closed due to a fire, Lancaster Tavern & Inn has hosted many visitors since 1790, including George Washington’s soldiers. Peek in the windows and possibly catch a glimpse of their bacon-cooking ghost! Epping Forest Plantation, the birthplace of Mary Ball Washington, is a few miles away in LIVELY. Although privately owned and not open to the public, it is worth driving by.

For lunch, visit the Car Wash Café in KILMARNOCK, a former convenience store. Owner Susan Hill and staff serve soft shell crab and rockfish sandwiches (in season),

crab omelets, she-crab soup and oyster po-boys. Afterward, work off the calories with a self-propelled CARTER’S CREEK ride on one of our complimentary kayaks or paddle boards. End your day with a summer specialty cocktail and an oyster or two, followed by an evening Maker Space class. Our helpful concierge will be happy to reserve a private pottery experience for you, and we will ship your finished piece to your home after it has been fired.

MAKER SPACE ACTIVITIESOur new Maker Space is the ideal environment in which to explore your inner artist and try your hand at something new. Our resident artists suggest you wear clothing that you don’t mind getting a splash of paint or clay on, as it’s part of the fun. Please make reservations for all Maker Space activities with our Concierge. If your plans change, please cancel your reservations 24 hours in advance to

avoid being charged in full. An 18% fee will be added to all activities hosted by one of our resident artists and experts.

THE SPAFounded in wellbeing, the treatments in the Tides Inn Spa have been created to be as individual as you are. Spa services are available for guests 16 and older. If you must change or cancel your appointment, please notify us at least 24 hours in advance of the treatment time to avoid being charged in full. Please check in with our Spa Concierge in at least 5 minutes prior to your appointment. Prices do not include tax, gratuity or service charge. Spa menu and prices may change without notice. To make reservations, please call 804.438.4430 or email [email protected].

RIVER ECOLOGY EXPERIENCESOur resort ecologist leads these on-the-water activities with a limited capacity of six people. As our waterfront weather can change quickly, it is suggested to wear layers for cooler days. While we provide water and food on select experiences, feel free to bring a small backpack along – to include sunscreen and other items. These aquatic activities come with an 18% facilitator fee.

HEALTH & SAFETYAs the safety and health of our guests is of utmost importance, the Tides Inn team creates seasonal schedules that are subject to change based upon CDC and local government guidelines for gatherings. Cancellation fees due to such circumstances will be waived. In addition, the Tides Inn was among

the first hotels in the world to become Sharecare Health Security VERIFIED® with Forbes Travel Guide. The verification helps guests and travel professionals reserve lodging with confidence at properties that have appropriate health safety procedures in place.
