Summer A level Geography Case Study Research Project
Case Study Research Overview:
You will pick a tectonic hazard to study and create a PowerPoint presentation.
This presentation will be shared with you’re your new classmates, and used as revision.
1. Refresh understanding of tectonic Hazards
• Watch video on Volcanoes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNGUdObDoLk
• Watch video on Earthquakes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7ho6z32yyo
• Watch video on Tsunamis
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oPb_9gOdn4
2. Read the chapter “Hazardous Environments” (At end of document)
3. You will need to pick one tectonic event From list below:
Volcanoes
Volcanoes at Convergent Boundaries or Destructive Margins
❖ 1980 eruption of Mount St Helens – side eruption ❖ 1883 eruption of Krakatoa – loudest sound ever made on earth
❖ 79 A.D eruption of Mount Vesuvius - buried the ancient Roman city of Pompeii ❖ 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo – Predicted 60,000 people were saved
Volcanoes at Divergent Boundaries or Constructive Margins
❖ The 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull - caused enormous disruption to air travel ❖ Nyamuragira erupts roughly every two years - Africa’s most active volcano
❖ Laki volcanic fissure in southern Iceland erupted 1783 – Killing a quarter of Iceland’s population
Hotspots
❖ The 2018 eruption of Kilauea – creation of chain islands – Hotspot under oceanic
plate ❖ Yellowstone – supervolcano - Hotspot under continental plate
❖ The 1963 eruption of Surtsey – creating a new a volcanic island - Hotspot under Constructive Margins
Earthquakes
Earthquake at Convergent Boundaries or Destructive Margins
❖ The 2010 Haiti earthquake - Death toll estimates 220,000
❖ The April 2015 Nepal earthquake - It was the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal ❖ The 1920 Haiyuan, Ningxia , China, earthquake – causing a landslide that buried
the village of Sujiahe ❖ 1960 Valdivia Earthquake - The world's largest earthquake
Earthquake at Transform Boundaries or Conservative Margins
❖ The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake - It was the first major earthquake in the United States to be broadcast by live television.
❖ The 1906 San Francisco earthquake - Deadliest earthquake in the history of the
United States.
Tsunamis
[SUMMER - A LEVEL – GEOGRAPHY - CASES STUDY RESEARCH PROJECT] 2
Tsunamis are almost always caused by Earthquakes at Convergent Boundaries or
Destructive Margins
❖ The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami - one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history
❖ 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami - shifted the Earth on its axis by estimates of between 10 cm and 25 cm
❖ The 1600 BC Minoan eruption and Tsunami (Santorini) - Pyroclastic flow caused
Tsunami
4. Research your chosen event
5. Last create a PowerPoint presentation to use as revision material
Include:
Physical Factors
❖ What caused the event?
❖ Why is the event distinctive? ❖ Will it happen again?
❖ Primary and Secondary effect?
Human factors
❖ Was the event predicted or could have been predicted?
❖ What protection was there against the event? ❖ What could be improved in the future?
