500 Spectacle of Homes by Robin Reagan

Wynnedale lived up to its name in May bringing the flavor and excitement of the Indy 500 to the neighborhood as part of the 500 Spectacle of Homes celebration. Over twenty families put out decorations and thirteen registered on the 500 Festival website earning us a mention on Channel 13 news! Checkered flags in color-coordinated flower arrangements, Welcome Driv-ers and Fans signs, checkered bunting on lampposts throughout the neigh-borhood, and other fun decorations, it was impossible to miss the growing celebration of the Indy 500 race as the month of May progressed.

While we didn’t get a visit from a race car driver to Wynnedale, we all won in the celebration of community demonstrated in street-side conversa-tions prompted by the festive dec-orations. It was a great, rookie year effort and if the 500 Festival has any-

one paying attention, it’s a tradition worth repeating in non-pandemic years!

A big shout-out to Craig Rice who put up and took down the lamppost bunting, and also Cheryl Bulcher, who created the Turn and “Start Your Engines” signs. And if there was a neighborhood winner in the creativity of decora-tions, certainly the McBride family won hands down, though I’m not sure they would count as rookies!

I haven’t spoken with anyone who actually attended the race this year, but certainly I, along with other Wynnedale residents, got to enjoy the spirit of the 500 on our own little “oval.” Thanks, again, to everyone who made the effort to join in the 500 Spectacle of Homes.

This notice to Wynnedale residents was delivered during the years of WWll (circa1942). The resolution does not apply today. Gardens and chickens are welcome. Anna and Conor Lee are current chicken owners in Wynnedale.

Rose Marie Balsara would like to share her recommen-dation for the dance studio she has been attending for the past year. DanceWorks Indy (https://danceworksindy.com) is a local, woman owned studio located downtown. They offer all dance styles (ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, musical theater, heels- yes, how to dance in high heels!) and cardio fitness classes (Circuit conditioning, 305 Fitness - dance club cardio and SWERK - Sweat Work Twerk!). It caters only to ADULTS- of every age and every level of dance. If you have always wanted to learn ballet or tap but never had the chance, this place breaks it down for you in a warm, supportive and judgement free space. Or if you danced once upon a time and then life happened but you would like to reconnect, this is the place to be! It’s never too late.

Over the last few months, they have been preparing for a Dance Showcase. The June 20th performance will take place at the Athenaeum Foundation. There will be 2 shows: 3:30pm and 6pm. Rose will be in four different numbers and they offer limited in person seating and virtual tickets as well. The last months have been difficult for everyone and Rose just wants to get the word out about this amaz-ing place run by an amazing young woman. DanceWorks is for everyone and a gem of a studio.

Janet Gibson adopted an adorable Chihuahua named Papi who is very friendly and so cute. After a friend’s sugges-tion, she contacted Chihuahua Rescue Indiana, Inc. A list of available dogs is on their website, www.chihuahuares-cuein.org. The list changes frequently so if you are inter-ested check back often. They also have a Facebook page.

The rescue does not have a shelter, they are foster-based. The dogs live in family homes all over Marion County and the donut counties. Janet is very pleased with her new family member.

Our neighbor at the end of Wilshire Rd and grandfather of Danica Wittman, Richard Emil Lindseth, passed away on May 4, 2021. He was a graduate of Harvard Medical School and was an orthopedic surgeon for over 61 years.

As a clinician, Dr. Lindseth’s work and research focused in the area of spina bifida. He helped set standards for patient management and developed many surgical procedures accepted around the world. Orthopaedic surgeons from across the United States and Europe came to Indianapolis to learn these procedures from him.

––––––––––––––––

Mel & Robyn Harder had to say good-bye to their beloved little pomeranian Bianca this month. She was with them for 14 years and she is terribly missed. Neighbors will miss seeing Bianca in Robyn’s arms when she is out walking.

Congratulations to Ross McBride who recently graduated from Purdue after studying Mechanical Engineering Tech-nology. He is interested in working on Quality Control for a manufacturing firm.

Jack McBride is working at a summer camp in Arkansas.

Cheryl McBride is finishing her 32nd year of teaching at IPS. Her school is very near the Speedway and they enjoy hearing the race cars a lot when the weather is warm.

Mike McBride is returning to the State Fairgrounds as the Director of Facilities after recently retiring from the USDA.

Mike is also an auctioneer. He recently served as the auc-tioneer for Greenwood Christian School’s “Pressing On” event. More than 100 donors from across Central Indiana gathered for the fundraiser. As a result, more than $3,000 was raised to directly benefit their education programs. Mike is a graduate of Purdue University and Reppert’s Auction School. He is a licensed auctioneer with Halder-man Real Estate Services, Inc. If you would like Mike to help your church, charity or other civic group, you may contact him at 317-410-1896.

NEIGHBORSWynnedale News Tidbits ContVimal Mehta & Deb Axness, of 4336 Hidden Orchard Lane, celebrated May birthdays for grandchildren Molly Mehta, Liam and Grace Nolen. So fun to be together!

A hawk joined the Middaughs by their back patio for brunch. He was on the ground near a tree, moved to the fence, then to anoth-er tree. Finally he swooped down along the fence and snatched his escaped prey, a rodent that he thankfully flew away with to eat. The whole time, smaller birds were clamoring and flying around him to protect their nests. Meanwhile, their dog napped.

––––––––––––––––

Alexa & Ryan Muich welcomed their daughter, Mabel Elisabeth, on March 6! Big brother Luka (2) is warming up to her slowly, dog brother Elon (5) thinks she smells better than bacon, and mom and dad are adjusting to the new normal of functioning on very little sleep! They couldn’t be more

smitten and are looking forward to meeting all the other new additions around the neighborhood.

Craig & Sue Rice rescued Mona, a Cavalier King Charles mix, from the Humane Society in 2013. Their best guess is that she was between three and four at that time. Little did they know that that breed is known for developing arthri-tis in the hips. She was a sweet dog except for the day she nipped Robin Reagan. Other than that she was an angel. About May 23rd this year she could hardly walk and two days later they had her put to sleep. The Keystone Pet Hospital staff was most kind and gentle. Her two best friends are pictured with her a few months ago.

Marshall Wilson, age 6, son of Chase and Kendra Wilson, graduated from Kindergarten this year. They are so proud of him and how hard he worked this school year during both virtual and in-person sessions. He will attend Crooked Creek next year for first grade.

Summer Pet Reminders• A reminder to check the summer temperatures before taking pets and

children for a walk.

• With the weather warming up, many of us have our windows open or we may be working outside in our yards. Please be aware that your dog barking for long periods of time can be an unwelcome addition to a peaceful day.

Memorial Day week, Bruce & Linda Ranger traveled to Bartlesville, OK to stay at Price Tower, the only skyscraper ever designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. They stayed in one of only nineteen hotel rooms at the tower. Their visit included a tour and a meal at the restaurant on the upper floor. It was fun for them to be with another couple and a good friend that flew in from Colorado to spend two days there and one night in Tulsa. None of them had ever visited Oklahoma.

The Rangers are Frank Lloyd Wright enthusiasts and have taken many tours of his homes built throughout the US.

Neighbors and Tech High School sweethearts, Chris-tina and Jamal Muhammad celebrated their 25th anni-versary in November with a drive-by party at their home, 2212 W 42nd St. They were only 18-years old when they married and now have two sons and a daughter in their 20s.

Christina attended Alexandria School of Scientific Therapeutics in Alexandria, IN, graduating in 2007 as a massage therapist.

Jamal graduated from the Empire Beauty School in Manitowoc, WI, in 2008. He worked as a cosmetol-ogist at a barber shop in Sheboygan before moving back to Indianapolis and opening Lamaj Salon & Spa with Christina. Located at 3960 Boulevard Place, Suites C and D (lamajsalonandspa.com), the salon employs five stylists, three massage therapists, one nail tech, plus Jamal, who graduated from Indiana Wellness College School Of Sports and Medical Massage in 2018. Naming the salon Jamal’s name backwards was Christina’s idea; they had enjoyed traveling in France and thought it sounded French.

Other countries the couple have visited include Argentina, Brazil, and Guyana, sometimes as volunteer missionaries through their church. Christina goes to Brazil yearly to visit “the baby of the family,” an exchange student who once lived with them.

Christina was the manager of the Starbucks at Michi-gan and Kessler until 2016. She makes jewelry, exercises diligently on a treadmill, and enjoys decorating their sunny home with houseplants and unique furniture finds.

Jamal has driven a bus in the morning for Indianapolis Public Schools for twenty years.

He’s on the lookout for a riding mower because he’d like to mow his own yard, a chore they didn’t have at their Butler-Tarkington rental residence.

Their new home has a fenced-in yard, so Jamal started breeding “bullies”, a hybrid

of all bulldog varieties. Bella has had one litter; Autumn and Hazel are still too young. They look fierce, scary, and angry, but Jamal describes them as “playful and lazy attention-seekers.”

Sandy: Me, too. Where do you live?

Beth: Wynnedale.

Sandy: Me, too! Where?

Beth: Corner of Knollton and Wynnedale.

Sandy: Me, too!! What’s your name?

As the current president of Assistance League of India-napolis, I am excited to share an opportunity to join one chapter of 120 across our country of National Assistance League®, an organization whose goal is to transform lives and children through community programs. I invite you to visit ALindy.org to learn more about our current four programs serving Marion County.

Even during the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandem-ic, our members continued to deliver Assault Survivor Kits and Bears to area agencies, “Virtual” bingo, birthday parties, healthy snacks and cards written by members to se-niors at Joy’s House and North Capitol Nursing and Reha-bilitation Center. Our largest program, Operation School Bell, provided duffel bags full of new clothing, hygiene kits, and books to IPS and the Metropolitan School Districts of Washington, Pike, Warren, and Lawrence Townships school’s children who are underserved in our community.

This program was difficult this past year due to so many

schools not being in session, but our efforts to transform lives should be back in full swing this fall. Operation School Bell helps so many families financially by providing their student with a new school wardrobe.

New members with your wide range of talents are always welcome. You will build some lifelong friendships while volunteering to help so many in the Indianapolis commu-nity.

I invite you to contact [email protected] to express an interest in becoming a member of this organiza-tion that supports our community.

Sincerely, Trish Severns, 2021-22 President

Horace N. Roberts and his wife Margaret moved to Indianapolis in 1942. Horace moved into his new job at the Allison Division of General Motors as manager of transmission sales while Margaret continued her passion-ate love of the theatre and dance. In 1956 they moved into their new home at 4275 Knollton Road (now the home of Candice and Josh Darring).

For ten years Horace was president of the Board of Trustees for the Civil Town of Wynnedale. This title has evolved into the Wynnedale Town Council.

The following newspaper article dated November 12, 1979 illustrates what a “salty” personality he had. He was responding to an Indianapolis Star article from November 4, 1979 that was critical of how council members were se-lected in Wynnedale and other small towns. He once said “You can’t select someone for a position if no one will run.”

Horace was a member of the Murat Shrine, the Scottish Rite, the Scientech Club and the American Federation of Musicians. He retired in 1970. In 1983 at the age of 73 he died from heart failure.

Margaret joined a dance company when she was 15 years old. She was a solo ballerina and also played many vaude-ville acts. In the 1930’s she was a teacher at a fine arts school in Kansas. After joining a touring company, she ended up in Michigan in 1935 where she met and married her husband. When they moved to Indianapolis Margaret went directly down to the Civic Theatre to continue her love of performing. She appeared in more than 60 plays at the Civic, played 28 summers at the Starlight Musicals and performed at other venues around Indianapolis.

Fame in a different form came to Margaret in her later years. She appeared in advertisements for the Hoosier Lottery and Kroger. She was very active and entertain-ing in the ads. In 1996 she moved to W. Virginia where her daughter lived. For years she walked a mile after breakfast and a mile after lunch using her walker. She died at the age of 96 in 2007.

Tidbit: In 1949 the Roberts family visited Horace’s family home in Marquette, Michigan. This home was known as “Deertrack” and was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1936. It is also known as the Abby

Beecher Roberts House.

WYNNEDALE HISTORYNotable Wynnedale Neighbors by Sue Rice-Wynnedale Historian

In January of this year, the staff of the Wynnedale News entered the paper in a competition. We sent three copies of two different issues to the Neighborhoods USA organiza-tion. NUSA provides opportunities for diverse people and organizations to share their ideas, values, and experiences to build stronger communities.

The NUSA yearly conference was in Fort Worth, TX where awards were presented. We received a notice the week before telling us that our paper was a finalist in the

competition. On June 3, 2021 we received a letter notify-ing us that the Wynnedale News had been awarded Third Place. We will receive a plaque engraved with Wynnedale News, Wynnedale, Indiana.

Thank you to all of our neighbors for sharing articles, new neighbor interviews, births and deaths, tidbits, restaurant reviews and photos. The biggest thank you goes to Joan Servaas for printing our paper four times a year in beautiful color.
