INTRODUCTION
Dr. GABRIELE FINALDIDirector, The National Gallery
There are few things as exciting for me as visiting a museum I have never seen or a private collection that is unknown to me. London Art Week, with the sheer
volume of art works that are on show – from ancient statues to medieval stained glass, from plein-air sketches to pieces by contemporary artists – is an equally exhilarating experience.
London is, of course, an astounding treasure house for the curious, with its public museums and exhibitions, and for a few days at the end of June and early July it offers, in addition, a veritable cornucopia of discoveries, rarely seen works, newly presented paintings and sculptures, fascinating juxtapositions of works of art, and all of this in an amazing array of spaces.

Galleries and dealers display the very best they have to the discerning, the cultivated or the just inquisitive. Museums might acquire a few works, but most will be bought by private collectors.
As the Director of the National Gallery, I know how important it is that this should happen. It may come as a surprise to many to know that more than half of the pictures in the Gallery have come as gifts from individual collectors.
I look forward to joining you at London Art Week this Summer.

It is fascinating to study which objects survive the perils of time; the ritualised, the ones that find a
protected home in stable institutions or families, objects whose importance are increased through their sale and trade or combinations of all three. Even more interesting is how these artefacts are reinterpreted by successive generations and appear to have their own evolution of relevancy.
Our cultural institutions, such as the beloved Wallace Collection, are the guardians and keepers of our collective curated objects that continue to inform our self-understanding. They steer a hazardous course between remaining faithful to their founding origins, risking obsolescence, and evolving, risking mutation; a delicate balancing act for retaining cultural relevance.
London Art Week helps stimulate these discussions, and ensures that the objects we choose to curate, new and old, do not only serve as feedback loops, reaffirming the totems of specific ages, but also help discover different narratives, latent with fresh clues about our past and future.
JACOB VAN DER BEUGEL

The event ensures that newly discovered pieces have the opportunity to become novel masterpieces, and in turn become protected, ritualised and relevant, as society’s forever shifting preoccupations discover precedents that our artist ancestors have already explored.

Rob and Nick Carter are a husband and wife artistic duo who have been collaborating for over twenty years. Their work is housed in the collections of the Mauritshuis, The
Hague; the Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem; the Frick, Pittsburgh; the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the David Roberts Foundation, London; the Städel Museum, Frankfurt; and the Fondation Custodia, Paris. They are the only living artists to show a work at the Frick Collection, New York.
“For many people today the art of the past has become remote, perhaps even unintelligible. Rob and Nick Carter want to reverse this trend.” The words of art critic Alastair Sooke sum up the approach we took in 2008 when we conceived Transforming, a series of twelve digitally-animated Old Master paintings. In our first film ‘Transforming Still Life Painting’ (2009-2012) we brought to life Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder’s 1618 work Vase with Flowers in a Window. Blooms slowly open up; the distant landscape changes from dusk to dawn; and the five insects in the original painting come to life within the seamless three-hour looped film.
ROB & NICK CARTER
Contemporary Artists
Like many of the Old Masters, we too employed teams of artists, and using computer generated imagery we brought these impossible arrangements to life with a realism that underscores and pays homage to the original paintings.
It has been so inspiring for us to look back and directly reference the artists of the Dutch Golden Age, in particular Ambrosius Bosschaert, Jacob van Ruisdael, Willem van Aelst and Rachel Ruysch. Their refined still life paintings in exquisite detail were the perfect starting point for our Transforming series. Works such as Dead Frog with Flies (Bosschaert, 1630), Still Life with a Candle, Walnuts and a Mouse (Van Aelst, 1647) and Flowers in a Vase (Ruysch, c.1685) are all stimulating subject matter to bring alive, and as relevant now as they were 400 years ago.
Once again we look forward to London Art Week and the chance to see and discover works of art, and learn from experts within the context of a gallery environment.

Founded in 1760, Colnaghi has a rich and varied history as a leading Old Master dealership.
For London Art Week, alongside our usual selection of important Spanish and Italian paintings and sculptures, we will be putting on an
exhibition exploring the relationship between seventeenth-century artists and antiquity, juxtaposing Ancient Greek and Roman art and objects with
the paintings they inspired.
This year we are also launching an exciting project in Venice, at the historic Abbazia di San Gregorio, merging the spirit of the Grand Tour with the desires
of the twenty-first century traveller.

In a series of educational videos, Sotheby’s sought to give agency back to women artists and the collector: by taking a renewed interest in these artists, the canon can be revitalised to include these amazing women. The subject hit home, touching on prevalent topics such as equal opportunity, pay gaps and sexism, bringing these experiences out of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and connecting them with collectors in the twentyfirst.
The campaign was a success, with Sotheby’s achieving seven new auction records for female artists, the most notable being Elisabeth-Louise Vigée Le Brun’s Portrait of Muhammad Dervish Khan
selling for $6.1 million hammer (est. $4-6 million), the most expensive work in the sale.

Manoeuvring an aesthetic rather than thematic strategy, Christie’s has branded their upcoming Old
Master’s event Classic Week: A New Age For Classic Art. Front and centre is an electrifying promo-video, a
sensory rush juxtaposing the highlight lots with cinematic imagery and special effects. As a campaign, this approach
is more holistic, bringing the Old Masters generally into a vogue modern environment with a contemporary art attitude.
The key element to this effort, however, is making the works visually understood, rather than simply sexy.

London Art Week is proud to announce its continuing partnership with art market
research firm ArtTactic.
Riding the high of a record shattering sale in 2017 and the buzz of Victoria Beckham, the
Old Master Paintings market felt buoyant this time last year – has the market managed to stay
afloat?
The results are in, and the answer is YES.
In 2018, the Old Master Paintings auction market was up 10% from 2017 (excluding the famed sale of Salvator
Mundi). Last summer, it was ‘Young Blood in the Old Masters’ on everyone’s mind, finding ways to bring a new
generation of professionals into the fold. As of late we have seen auction houses go a step further, bringing the Old
Masters forward into the twentyfirst century, making them sexy, relevant and digestible.
Sotheby’s started the year off fresh and female focused. For their Masters Week in January, the auction house’s highlight was The
Female Triumphant, focusing on centuries of female artists who have been overshadowed by their male counterparts.

A NEW LOOK for the OLD MASTERS

A highlight of their May sale is the extremely rare vanitas painting by Guercino, A Vanitas Still Life with a Skull estimated at $2-3 million. Christie’s has produced a combination of videos, both promo and educational for their highlight: the promo puts the work into a decoratively compelling context, making it alluring and mysterious, while in the educational video, a Christie’s specialist talks through the piece with someone unfamiliar with the genre, an open discussion of viewing. Stay tuned for how this strategy compares (ArtTactic’s January/May Old Master Paintings report will be published in early May 2019).
This summer, both auction houses will have their Old Masters Evening sales back to back during London Art Week, for which ArtTactic will be producing our third special report free of charge to London Art Week visitors and participants. The report will include field interviews and articles on topics including a deeper dive into women in the art world, connections between Contemporary artists and the Old Masters, sale highlights and never before seen analysis of Old Master Day Sales.
