A SPECIAL BRIEFING FOR KEY FRIENDS OF THE U.S. POULTRY & EGG ASSOCIATION SUMMER 2015 in Poultry in Poultry USPOULTRY AND THE FOUNDATION Fund $288,664 for Research B ased on recommendations from the Foundation Research Advisory Committee, our Association and Foundation boards have approved a total of $288,664 for seven new research grants at three institutions: University of Georgia (research grant made possible by a gift from Mar-Jac Poultry) Production of Variant Reovirus Hyperimmune Serum for Use as a Diagnostic Tool to Further Characterize Avian Reoviruses from Clinical Cases of Tenosynovitis USDA Agricultural Research Service (research grant made possible by a gift from GNP Company) Identification of the Wooden Breast Condition in Broiler Breast Fillets Using Imaging Technology University of Georgia (research grant made possible by a gift from Fieldale Farms) Improved Methods for the Control of Variant Strains of IBV University of Georgia Impact and Mitigation of Stormwater Runoff from Poultry Processing Plants University of Delaware Protection Provided by Multivalent Infectious Bronchitis Virus Vaccines Against Challenge with Current U.S. Strains and Variants USDA Agricultural Research Service Cold Plasma-based Antimicrobial Packaging System to Improve the Shelf Life and Reduce Foodborne Pathogens in Poultry Breast Meat University of Delaware Modified Live Vaccines of Infectious Laryngotracheitis Virus Since the inception of the research program, USPOULTRY and the Foundation have reinvested more than $25 million dollars into the industry in the form of research grants, with the International Poultry Expo as the primary source for the funding. “Research is an important part of USPOULTRY’s and the Foundation’s service to the industry,” said Sherman Miller, Cal-Maine Foods, Jackson, Miss., and USPOULTRY chairman. “The Foundation Research Advisory Committee is the heart of the research program with committee members allocating numerous hours studying and evaluating research proposals before making recommendations for funding. We sincerely appreciate and value their excellent work.” Penn State Receives $10,000 Recruiting Grant Penn State’s Department of Animal Science strives to prepare and encourage students to become future leaders within the industry. In support of these efforts, the Department received a $10,000 recruiting grant from the USPOULTRY Foundation’s Industry Education Recruitment Fund. The funds will be used to recruit students to attend Penn State, seek a career in the poultry industry and educate youth through outreach to 4-H members across the state. USPOULTRY and the USPOULTRY Foundation have approved a total of $248,499 for three new research grants at three institutions through the Board Research Initiative program.

The USPOULTRY Board Research Initiative was created by the Boards of USPOULTRY and the USPOULTRY Foundation to address current issues facing the poultry industry. The USPOULTRY Board Research Initiative operates alongside the current USPOULTRY research program and augments the great success of the existing program by focusing additional resources toward defined areas of research.

The research funding was approved by the boards of directors of both organizations, based on recommendations from the Foundation Research Advisory Committee. The research grants for each institution include:
