For nearly 35 years Benevilla has been serving the West Valley and continues to grow with the revitalization of the West Valley Life Enrichment Program in Peo-ria. Located at The Church at Cactus, this unique program is designed for people with illnesses such as stroke dementia, Parkinson’s, and those who cannot be at home for various reasons. The program has undergone a complete renovation to deliver a more modern and revitalized concept to Benevilla’s Members.

The Life Enrichment Program creates a sanctuary where adult children and care-givers feel comfortable leaving their loved ones in a safe, home-like environment while they go to work or attend to other commitments. This program offers assis-tance to a diverse group of people with a wide range of adaptive activities such as yoga, drumming, art classes and more.

“We are so excited about the revital-ization of Benevilla’s West Valley Life Enrichment Program and look forward to providing many new creative endeavors to our members,” says Michelle Dionisio, Benevilla President and CEO. “These new programs are truly life changing.”

Nursing students at Glendale Community College train in state-of-the-art rooms with simulators to bring real-life experience to the classroom.

Do you enjoy caring for and helping others? Are you interested in a career that’s expected to grow in the Val-ley? If so, become a registered nurse (RN)! In Arizona, you can become an RN by getting an associate’s or a bachelor’s degree in nursing. In recent years, many hiring managers prefer bachelor’s-prepared RN graduates.

If the cost of a bachelor’s degree nursing program is holding you back, consider the Concurrent Enrollment Program (CEP) at Glendale Community College (GCC). You can earn an associate’s of applied science (AAS) degree in nursing and a bachelor’s

of science in nursing (BSN) degree at the same time - sav-ing time and money! While completing the GCC nurs-ing program, you will also be enrolled in BSN courses with one of our partners, Northern Arizona University (NAU), Arizona State University (ASU) or Upper Iowa Univer-sity. Tuition at GCC is only $84 for Maricopa County resi-dents, so students save money.

One of the first graduates of the GCC’s CEP, Cecilia Mora-Fernau, graduated from GCC with her AAS degree in 2013. At the same time, she complet-ed her BSN degree from NAU. Cecilia then enrolled in NAU’s nurse practitioner program,

and two years later, she com-pleted her second degree -- a master’s of science in nursing. Cecilia was so impressed with GCC, she recommended the program to her sister and her husband who are both students in the program now!

GCC’s nursing program offers traditional, weekend and evening schedule options for busy adults. The program’s pass rate for the national licen-sure exam exceeds the national average and is accredited by the National League for Nurs-ing.

If you would like to learn more about the GCC nursing program, plan to attend a pre-nursing information session

offered Mondays at 11 am or 4 pm on GCC’s main campus or Tuesdays at 3 pm at GCC North. Nursing advisors can answer your questions about a career in nursing, the nurs-

People’s lives can change in a split second, and those who work in public safety profes-sions face that reality every day. Blood donors are heroes to people like Phoenix Police Offi-cer Rob Sitek, who required 148 lifesaving blood transfusions when he was shot in the line of duty and lost the equivalent of all the blood in his body five times. Officer Sitek is thank-ful for the talented surgeons and blood donors who saved his life. “I applaud people who give blood regularly,” he said, “because their dona-tions were available to my doctors when I was severely injured and needed it most.”

United Blood Services is Arizona’s largest non-profit community blood provider, serving more than 60 hospitals across the state. Nearly 500 blood donors are needed every day to meet the transfusion needs of patients in those hospi-tals. In Arizona, United Blood Services has also been established as one of the approximately half-dozen national hubs to supplement military blood supplies in the event of an emergency.

To make a donation appointment at United Blood Services’ Goodyear Donor Center or at an upcoming base blood drive, simply visit www.BloodHero.com or call 1-877-UBS-HERO (827-4376). Donors with base access are encouraged to donate at one of the upcom-ing Luke Air Force Base blood drives in Sep-tember – simply list Sponsor Code LAFB when signing up.

Shot in the line of duty, Officer Rob Sitek lost the equivalent of 5 times his blood volume.

Stop tolerating the complica-tions of diabetes!

For far too long, patients with diabetes have accepted their fate. Doctors tell them the same thing over and over: eat right, exercise, take your medicine and still, they devel-

op complications that affect their entire body. They don’t feel normal and they are angry. All of that can change because a newly established clinic in Scottsdale called Trina Health of Arizona is helping all of their diabetic patients return to

near-normal.If diabetics do not control

their sugars religiously, over time, they will develop com-plications that can affect the heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves in the hands and feet. A diag-nosis of diabetes not only

affects them physically, but depression is very common.

Only CapTel offers different model phones to match your lifestyle. If you prefer the comfort of a traditional-style telephone, try the Cap-Tel 840i! It has the classic look of a traditional telephone with a large keypad and easy-to-read display screen. If you love the convenience of a touch-screen display, try the CapTel 2400i! The tablet-style display and helpful graphic menus make it easy to use. Do you need larger caption sizes? No problem! The extra large display screen on the CapTel 880i helps make sure you don’t miss a word

While APT is not a cure for diabetes, Trina Health of Arizona has improved the health of all of their patients. Their patients have more energy, better eyesight, are not going on dialysis and their wounds are healing quickly. Does this sound like a miracle? Trina’s patients think so.

Why have you not heard about them? Because they have only been open for one year and have been quietly

marketing their therapy. Over-whelming demand has caused the Scottsdale clinic to be oper-ating at compactly. Because of this patient demand, they are building a new clinic behind the Thunderbird Medical Cen-ter in Glendale, Arizona and will be open in June 2015.

8 Summer 2015 HEALTH & WELLNESS QUARTERLY

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune systemic inflammatory disease which affects up to 2.4 million Americans. Its cause is due to genetic susceptibility and environ-mental factors. RA causes joint pain, stiffness, joint swelling of small and large joints, deformities, X-ray damage, decreased function, poor quality of life and disability. RA contributes to other dis-ease states such as cardio-vascular disease that can lead to heart attacks and strokes. The diagnosis is based on the symptoms, examination, blood tests, X-ray, ultrasound, and/or MRI.

Cortisone (e.g. Predni-sone) and NSAIDS (e.g. Ibuprofen) can help sys-tems but do not have the ability to modify the joint destruction and functional decline. Their side effect profile counters their lim-ited effectiveness. Disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDS) (e.g. Methotrexate, Arava, Plaquenil) often fail to induce remission. Newer biologics (e.g. Enbrel, Remicade, Humira,

Actemra), often added to Methotrexate can increase effectiveness, however, most RA patients do not achieve remission and they also may cause mild and serious side effects which limit their use.

The physicians in prac-tice at Arizona Arthritis & Rheumatology Associates and their research divi-sion, Arizona Arthritis & Rheumatology Research, are dedicated to the care of patients with RA. They helped develop the avail-

able RA therapies and are investigating new drugs on the horizon. We encourage patients with RA to con-tact us to participate in our growing research efforts and to become patients of our cutting edge rheuma-tology center.

Are missing teeth causing you embarrassment and discomfort? Replacing missing teeth promptly is important because they can cause other serious oral health problems. There are other tooth replacement options, but dental implants are by far the first choice of dentists and patients alike. A permanent tooth replacement option, dental implants are stable, durable, and look like your natural teeth. Tooth alignment issues are one of

the biggest concerns with missing teeth. Your teeth are constantly mov-ing, and surrounding teeth can even-tually shift into the space created by a missing tooth. This causes your teeth to become misaligned, lead-ing to other problems like premature wear, teeth grinding, fractured teeth, and more. Dr. Singh completed a postgraduate residency and received additional surgical training to help his patients by replacing missing teeth with natural-looking dental implants. How Do Dental Implants Work?First, it’s important to understand

that a dental implant is made up of three parts: the implant, the abut-ment, and the crown (restoration.) The implant portion is a very small titanium screw that is surgically placed in your jaw by Dr. Singh. We use titanium because it is very strong

and acts as the replacement root for your new tooth.Next, we attach the abutment por-

tion of the implant. This piece sits just above and below the gum line and provides a base to attach the crown. Finally, a dental crown will be created by Dr. Singh right in our Phoenix dental implants office, and you will leave with a beautiful new tooth.Complimentary Implant Semi-nar August 14th 2015.Call us at 623-934-6400 for more

Look for:

- Wide, padded shoulder straps - Narrow straps can dig into shoulders causing pain and restrict circulation.

- Two shoulder straps - Backpacks with one shoulder strap cannot distribute weight evenly.

- Padded back - Protects against sharp edges on objects inside the pack and increases comfort.

- Waist strap - A waist strap can distribute the weight more evenly.

- Lightweight backpack - The backpack itself should not add much weight to the load.

- Rolling backpack - This type may be a good choice for students who must tote a heavy load. Remember that rolling backpacks still must be carried up stairs.

To prevent backpack injuries: - Always use both shoulder straps. Slinging a back-

pack over one shoulder can strain muscles and may increase curvature of the spine.

- Tighten the straps so the pack is close to the body. Straps should hold the pack two inches above the waist.

- Pack light. The backpack should never weigh more than 10-20% of the student’s total body weight.

- Organize the backpack to use all of its compart-

ments. Pack heavier items closest to the center of the back.

- Stop often at school lockers, if possible. Do not carry all of the books needed for the day.

- Bend using both knees, when you bend down. Do not bend over at the waist when wearing or lifting a heavy backpack.

- Learn back-strengthening exercises to build up the muscles used to carry a backpack.

pleting his vascular fellow-ship Dr. Sharma worked as one of the top vascular and general surgery in sev-eral valley hospitals such as Banner Thunderbird, Banner Boswell Hospital and Arrowhead Hospital, just to name a few. He per-formed major vascular sur-geries in all these hospitals. He treated patients with aneurysms and claudica-tions in the lower extremi-ties. He performed carotid stents and surgeries for aneurysms in the carotid arteries. He also performed several abdominal aorta aneurysms AAA surgeries; several bypass procedures in the legs to increase the blood flow due to claudi-cation or atherosclerosis. He also performed several vein stripping procedures on patients with vari-cose vein symptoms. Dr. Sharma is the founder and medical director of the Ari-zona Vein and Laser Insti-tute since 2005 where he has been treating patients with venous disorders and has performed over 10,000 endogenous laser ablations with great results. Dr. Shar-ma was nominated three times in a row in 2010, 2011 and 2012 as the top vascular surgeon of Amer-

ica by consumer research council of America. He has memberships in American College of Philology, Fel-low of American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Cosmetic Sur-gery and Vascular Society of Dr. Edward Dietrich. Today, Dr. Sharma is the original Founder and Med-ical Director of the Arizona Vein and Laser Institute, which he established in 2005. The Arizona Vein and Laser Institute began with its first location in Glendale, Arizona and has since grown to four loca-tions: Glendale, Avondale, Surprise and North Phoe-nix. Patient Testimonials:

“I did my research online for the practices in Arizo-na that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cos-metic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Shar-ma is a wonderful physi-cian. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about mak-

ing you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Shar-ma, you have a wonder-ful staff, which says a lot about you as an employer. I spent many office vis-its with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!” Joy A.

“I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn’t matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sympathetic of my situ-ation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside man-ners are second to none. Thank you!” Scott.

“I was in the hospital with Phlebitis in my night leg. Doctors wanted to amputate the leg at the hip joint. I refused the surgery. My leg developed ulcers just above the ankle and became a 30 year problem. Years and many doctors later, I learned about Dr. Sharma. My leg is finally healing.” -Francis P.

“The procedures were virtually painless and the healing process was less stressful than I had envisioned. Today, I am extremely happy with the results and so pleased that I made the call to your office. Bundles for Babies; If you are an active duty member or spouse of an active duty member who is expecting a baby or is a new mother assigned to an Air Force installa-tion, you are encouraged to contact the Airman & Family Readiness Center to sign up for a “Bundles for Babies” class. It is an opportunity to learn about parenting skills, finances, meet other expectant par-ents, and receive a bundle including Large canvas tote bag w/AFAS logo, Thermal receiving blan-ket, Hooded Towel and washcloth, White knit crib sheet, Printed knit crib sheet, 3 pack sleep-n-play, 5 pack onesies, 2 pair boo-ties, 2 bibs, and 3 burp cloths. Classes are open to all ranks and are not lim-ited to a first pregnancy.

Heart Link; The transi-tion from singlehood to married life can be a dif-ficult process and marry-ing an military member can pose its own unique challenges. Heart Link is a program designed to familiarize civilian spous-es with the military and alleviate some of these issues.

From military protocol to traditions and lingo, Heart Link teaches civilian spouses what their military counterparts deal with on a daily basis. Spouses are introduced to the military community. They have an important role to play, which is keeping up the home front while their spouses are deployed and being a source of support for the Airmen.

Heart Link, which is geared toward newlyweds, is designed to help connect military members with their spouses. By integrat-ing spouses into the mili-tary it helps to enhance mission readiness. Par-ticipants learn about mili-tary protocol and military and Air Force traditions including the role of coin-ing and the Air Force song. Military Family Life Consultants (MFLC) pro-vides short-term, non-medical counseling to Service Members and their families. MFLCs augment existing military support programs world-wide. Through the MFLC Program, licensed clinical

providers assist Service Members and their fami-lies with issues they may face through the cycle of deployment - from leaving their loved ones and pos-sibly living and working in harm’s way to reintegrat-ing with their community and family. The MFLC program provides support for a range of issues includ-ing: relationships, crisis intervention, stress man-agement, grief, occupa-tional and other individual and family issues. HEALTH & WELLNESS QUARTERLY Summer 2015 15

Brought to you by: Arizona Oncology

More than two million peo-ple in the United States will be diagnosed with skin can-cer this year. It is the most common form of cancer in this country, but it is also one of the most preventable. Ari-zona Oncology is remind-ing the community about the importance of protecting their skin from the sun and other sources of ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

UV rays are invisible to the naked eye and are more intense in the summer, at higher altitudes, and in areas closer to the equator. Over-exposure to ultraviolet radia-tion from the sun causes sunburn (erythema), skin cancer, premature aging (skin wrinkling), cataracts (gradual clouding of the lens of the eye), immune system suppression, DNA damage and dilated blood vessels.

The most important way for a person to lower his or her risk for skin cancer is to avoid exposure to UV radia-tion, either from the sun or other sources, such as tan-ning lamps. The American

Cancer Society recommends the following seven practic-es for sun safety:

1. Protect skin with cloth-ing, such as long sleeve shirts and hats with broad brim.

2. Avoid being outdoors when the ultraviolet light is strongest, partic-ularly between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

3. Seek shade4. Use sunscreen and lip

balm with a SPF of 15 or more on areas of the skin exposed to the sun. Products should be used on hazy or overcast days as well.

5. Wear wrap-around sun-glasses with at least 99 percent UV absorption to provide the best pro-tection for the eyes and the skin around the eyes.

6. Avoid other sources of UV lights, such as tan-ning beds and sun lamps.

7. Protect children from the sun by using the same precautions as adults.

Home Again Medical can help with swollen feet

Janet Crowl, OT/L ATP

Are your feet tired or swol-len at the end of the day? Do you have spider veins or vari-cose veins? Has your physi-cian recommended compres-sion stockings to be worn during the day? Do you know how compression stockings work? Let’s see if I can help you understand why they work.

Your blood vessels carry blood through your body. The arteries go from the heart to the very small capil-laries. At the capillary level the Oxygen and nutrients are exchanged within the tissue (good in and bad out). The return of the blood is achieved through the venous system. The arterial system is depen-dent on the heart to provide enough pressure to get it to the tips of your toes and fin-gers. The venous system uses “pressure” valves to move the blood back to the heart. As our body changes throughout our lives the valves in our legs do not close as efficiently as when we were young. The inability to close efficiently leads to swelling.

Compression stockings pro-

vide pressure to the leg to prevent the swelling. Com-pression stockings generally are done in light, medium or moderate, and heavy com-pression levels. Your physi-cian will either tell you the amount of compression or give you a prescription for the amount of compression that

you need. The compression is tightest at the ankle to assist the venous system to return the fluid toward the abdomen to allow the fluid to recircu-late.

Benefits of HDR Brachytherapy for Skin Cancer• Customized for each individual patient • non-invasive and less scarring

• Performed in a convenient outpatient setting • shorter treatment times than conventional radiation

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. For patients with basal cell or squamous cell skin cancer, HDR Brachytherapy provides an efective treatment option

with few side efects and excellent cosmetic results. Radiation can also help treat melanoma, a less common, but more

serious form of skin cancer because of its tendency to spread.

If you or someone you love is diagnosed with skin cancer, explore your options. Together with The US Oncology Network,

Arizona Oncology brings the expertise of nearly 1,000 physicians nationwide to the delivery of our patients’ care.

At Arizona Oncology, we believe together is a better way to ight.

The US Oncology Network is supported by McKesson Specialty Health.
