summer 2014 newsletter

S pring and summer are the seasons of garage and yard sales. I have put together a list of tips for those of you who are planning to have a garage sale in the near future. Advertise well The more advertising the better! Advertise on- line, on social media (if your neighborhood has a Facebook page) and also in print. Craigslist.ca and Usedvictoria.com are great places to start on-line. A good idea is to run an ad on-line with photos of some of the things that you have to sell. A day or two before your sale, place several large signs around your neighborhood. The most important thing on a sign are the words “Garage Sale” written very large and a huge arrow pointing the direction to the garage sale. Make them large and easy to read. Place large items in front You have about 3 seconds as a car drives by to make a good impression. Either they will stop or they will keep on driving. Have a free pile Place a large well-marked “free pile” right out front. The lure of something free will get almost any driver to stop. People feel bad for stopping a just taking something for free, they will typically find something to buy so they don’t feel bad for just taking the free stuff. Price to sell Having a garage sale is the last-ditch effort to make some cash on stuff you are probably going to donate or trash. If it doesn’t sell, you will get nothing for it, so price it low! If you are wanting to make big bucks off your stuff and sell it for what it’s worth, list it on Usedvictoria.com or Craigslist.com. IT’S GARAGE SALE SEASON! Spring and summer are the seasons of garage and yard sales. I have put together a list of tips for those of you who

are planning to have a garage sale in the near future.

Advertise wellThe more advertising the better! Advertise on-line, on social media (if your neighborhood has a Facebook page) and also in print.

Place large items in frontYou have about 3 seconds as a car drives by to make a good impression. Either they will stop or they will keep on driving.

Have a free pilePlace a large well-marked “free pile” right out front. The lure of something free will get almost any driver to stop. People feel bad for stopping a just taking something for free, they will typically find something to buy so they don’t feel bad for just taking the free stuff.

Price to sellHaving a garage sale is the last-ditch effort to make some cash on stuff you are probably going to donate or trash. If it doesn’t sell, you will get nothing for it, so price it low! If you are wanting to make big bucks off your stuff and sell it for what it’s worth, list it on Usedvictoria.com or Craigslist.com.

Price tag everything If you want your stuff to sell, put a price tag on it! Most people won’t ask how much something is; they will just set it down and move on. It takes extra time and energy to tag everything, but it’s worth it.

Be preparedHave an extension cord ready so people can check electric items. Have shopping bags or boxes handy.

Manage the moneyHave a lot of small change handy; use a fanny pack to keep it safe and in one place.

Keep organizedAs people buy things, corral unsold items closer together. Move shelves closer to the front as you run out of items. Keep your area clean and tidy.

Display like items togetherThe harder you try to keep items together, the more you will sell. Have an area for bags, kid stuff, kitchen stuff, home décor, books, furniture, clothes and shoes.

Get rid of everythingBargain like crazy! Offer to add items for an additional 50 cents or offer 5 books for the price of 3. An hour before closing, slash prices! Also arrange for a charity to come the next day to pick up anything that did not sell. Do not take anything back into the house!

Above all… Keep your sense of humor and make the day enjoyable for all. Encourage people to haggle and make a game of it. You’ll sell more stuff and have more fun!

This year, Holmes Realty won’t be sitting on the sidelines when Sidney’s Canada Day parade goes rolling by. We

will be in the parade, riding in style! Watch for us in the Holmes Realty van, handing out Canada flags as we go!
