Welcome to the Summer 2014 edition of the Surrey Crossroads newsletter. This is my second chance to write to you, I have now been in post as CEO for nearly 6 months and the time has certainly flown by very quickly. The last year has been a period of great change for Crossroads. Following the merger of the six Crossroads schemes staff now work from our three office bases

in the North, West and East of Surrey. We are really beginning to work as one organisation. In May we will have our first ‘all staff’ meeting. With over 200 staff it has been a challenge to find a suitable affordable venue. But I am pleased to say that Friends Life in Dorking has agreed to host our event where we will share good practice and identify our priorities to support more Surrey Carers in the coming year. Over the last few months in parts of Surrey we have been severely affected by adverse weather conditions, interrupting not only our office operations in Guildford but also with flooding impacting on some of our staff and service users. This has put our business continuity plan to the test but I am pleased to say that thanks to our dedicated and flexible staff we have been able to continue to deliver our services with very little disruption. Throughout the coming year we will continue to strive to offer support to more Carers throughout Surrey and also increase the number of our Carer Support Workers. As the days lengthen and Summer appears Crossroads Care Surrey is looking forward to continuing to provide the best range of services possible for our service users.

Christine Cleveland Chief Executive Officer

A greeting from our CEO

Who are Crossroads Care Surrey? Crossroads Care Surrey is a leading, registered Charity providing vital respite breaks to unpaid Carers in the county. Our core purpose is to improve the quality of life of unpaid Carers and the people for whom they care. We provide highly trained Carer Support Workers to take over a Carer’s responsibilities for a few hours each week. This time away from their caring responsibility contributes to the Carer’s physical and mental well-being, enabling them to have some time to themselves, to meet with friends, participate in leisure activities, go shopping or simply relax. The key factor is that they can spend their time with complete peace of mind, knowing that their Crossroads Carer Support Worker is a qualified professional working to a detailed care plan.

Our Services Our core service:

We are able to offer Carers 3 FREE hours each week, of one to one home based care, which is funded by Surrey County Council and voluntary income. There is a waiting list for this service but we are able to offer Carers additional purchased hours. We are committed to sending the same Carer Support Worker (CSW) to each visit, providing continuity of care and emotional support. We are proud to say that over 50% of our CSWs have worked with us for over 10 years .

Crossroads Clubs:

We offer all those we care for the option to attend a variety of Clubs; Social Clubs, Befriending Groups for children and young adults, Care Cafés for Carers and people with dementia, and Saturday Clubs for children and young people with disabilities and complex care needs. For a full listing of the Clubs in your area please look under the location nearest you.

How we make a difference

Page 5: Summer 2014 Newsletter

End of life Service:

In partnership with the NHS, this free Crossroads Care Surrey-wide service provides individually tailored support to Carers and people affected by life limiting illnesses at home during their last 12 months of life. A palliative care-trained Carer Support Worker will take over the

caring role to give the unpaid Carer regular breaks. Our End of Life Carers Support Service, makes it possible for the family to make the most appropriate choice suited to their circumstances. The support provided is unlimited and available 24 hours a day if needed.

Care Packages:

We can offer Carers a variety of self funded Care Packages at affordable rates. To find out more about our Care Packages please turn over to the next page. To book or discuss our Care Packages further please contact a Care Co-ordinator at the location nearest to you.

Who can refer? Referrals can come from the Carers themselves, their friends and family, Social Workers or healthcare professionals. Crossroads Care Surrey is now part of the NHS England’s GP Carers Prescription Service which allows GP’s to refer Carers straight to Crossroads Care Surrey at a click of a button. Crossroads Care Surrey is committed to supporting as many unpaid Carers as possible and we welcome all new referrals. For more information about Crossroads Care Surrey please contact us on 01483 447770, or [email protected]

Flexible, affordable Breaks We can now offer you extended respite breaks to give you a day or an evening away from your caring responsibilities in

a block of:

3 Hours – At a time that suits you to allow you the flexible short break that you need. 10 Hours – This gives you the option of day, sleeping or waking night respite care. 24 Hours – This includes 24 hours sleeping or waking care. 48 Hours – This allows you to have a weekend away, safe in the knowledge that the person you care for is receiving the highest standard of care. Our overnight packages provide the option of waking nights, where our CSW will not go to bed at all, or sleeping nights where a bed is available for our CSW. All of our Care Packages are flexible and can be tailored around you and the specific needs of the person for whom you care. Many Carers struggle on without help until they reach breaking point, yet is important that as a Carer your own health and well being is maintained so that you can continue to care. Don’t delay, contact your local Care Co-ordinator to make a referral, discuss your requirements, or ask for a price list. Our offices are open Monday—Friday 9.00 am—5.00 pm. Different rates apply for weekends (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) and bank holidays.

Vision and Values

William, who is the main Carer for his 66 year old wife Mary, has high levels of stress. Mary has epilepsy, stroke, impaired balance, impaired vision, Multiple Sclerosis and memory loss. William has a franchise enterprise with staff depending on him to continue with his business and not retire. Crossroads Care Surrey visits at least 4 times each week. The family receives 3 weekly complimentary hours and William pays for all other sessions. His daughter, who has two small children, is also a part time Carer for her Mum between working as a secretary in her father’s business. The same fully trained Carer Support Workers go into their house each week. They administer epilepsy medication if required; provide personal care (toileting) if needed, make meals (getting Mary to help as much as possible) so her husband has a hot meal when he gets home from work. Mary goes out in the Carer Support Worker’s cars which she thoroughly enjoys. William comments, “My daughter and I have complete confidence in Crossroads. We have peace of mind knowing that Mary is having a nice time in our absence. We can relax as we are assured that she is well looked after.”

Crossroads Compliance

Crossroads Care Surrey excellence is achieved

by our dedicated team of Carer Support

Workers who understand the needs of Carers,

and the people for whom they care. As an

organisation, we are proud to be compliant with

the Care Quality Commission. We have

received a level 3 CROQUET recognition (Crossroads National own

measuring standard) and our Children’s Clubs are compliant with Ofsted.

Crossroads Care Surrey is recruiting! We are looking to recruit Carer Support Workers (CSW’s) in all three of our locations. These positions involve providing one on one compassionate care to a person in their own home. CSW’s are paid at competitive rates, given extensive training and receive great benefits such as paid mileage. All of our CSW’s must have their own means of transport and offers of employment are subject to an enhanced DBS check. We are also recruiting Playworkers at our Saturday Clubs, which are run for children and young people with disabilities. All Playworkers are given ample training and this role would suit someone who has experience of working with children, is energetic and enjoys working as part of a team. If you are a caring individual, over the age of 18, and want a career that gives you the opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives visit www.crossroadscaresurrey.org.uk and click on ‘jobs’ to download a recruitment pack.

Crossroads Care Surrey has been

fortunate enough to gain support

from 11 Waitrose stores throughout

Surrey as part of their Community

Matters Scheme.

We have so far received a total of

£3057 and still have many more

cheques to collect. This is a fantastic

achievement and we thank Waitrose

for their support.

We would like to say thank you to the Yorkshire Building Society for supporting us with a donation of £300. This donation resulted from their Charity Choice Campaign, where over a two week period members of the Society and the general public were invited to vote for their preferred local Charity. We were one of three local Charities chosen and received the second highest amount of votes. The donation of £300, will go towards helping more Carers in the East Surrey area and we are truly grateful for the Yorkshire Building Society’s support.

We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the family of the late Mrs Peggy Young who so thoughtfully chose Crossroads Care Surrey to be the beneficiary of the In Memoriam funeral donations. We received donations of over £1,000 in her memory for which we are truly grateful. Crossroads Care Surrey cared for Mrs Young for many years and she will be sadly missed by the Crossroads team. Our thoughts go out to her family and friends at this sad time but hope that they will find some comfort that their generosity will allow more Carers in East Surrey to have the breaks that they deserve.

Donations to the Children’s Clubs

We are extremely grateful to a generous family, whose child regularly attends the Walton on Thames Club for making a recent donation to support the Saturday Children’s Clubs. The money will fund the new storage facility and the cost of new equipment at our Outings Club in Walton on Thames. The family commented that, ‘the Saturday Club makes such a difference to our child and us as a family and we are delighted that the donation is being spent on equipment for the outings Club’.

In memorial to Martin Denis Patrick

We have received a number of generous donations in memory of the late Martin Dennis Patrick who sadly passed away earlier this year. Martin helped out at the Farleigh Hall Club in Warlingham, cooking fantastic lunches for everyone who attended. Martin was a much loved member of the Crossroads team and any donations in his memory will go towards the purchase of new equipment at the Farleigh Hall Club.

Crossroads Care Surrey launch new Saturday Outings Club

Thanks to the support of Walton on Thames Charity, Crossroads Care Surrey has been fortunate to fund an Outings Club. This gives six to eight young people, with varying disabilities the opportunity to enjoy an activity in the community whilst being cared for on a one to one basis by a Play Worker and a Team Leader. The first outing started on Saturday 25th January 2014 which was bowling at Guildford Spectrum. We have since then taken six young adults every Saturday either to the cinema or bowling. The mini bus sets off from the meeting point at Burview Hall in Walton on Thames, at around 10am. On arrival the young people get really excited and can't wait to get on the mini bus. On route to the venue they sing songs and once they arrive they all have a game of bowling or sit down and watch a film at the cinema. After this is over they then all go for a drink and a snack at a restaurant. The Team Leader and Play Workers then take the young people back to Burview Hall where they are then picked up by their parents/Carers. From the beginning of April a new rota of outings will be set and these will include; Laser Quest, Swimming at Coral Reef and trips to; Bocketts Farm, Bookham, Horton Hobble Farm and Epsom.

From the 22nd –28th February 2014 Dementia Friendly Surrey hosted Guildford’s Dementia Awareness Week. This week was supported by Crossroads Care Surrey. It was a chance for our organisation, along with other voluntary bodies and local authorities, to raise awareness of those living with dementia and signpost them and their Carers to local dementia services.

A drop in hub was opened for the week on Guildford’s Swan Lane. This was used as a place for the public to go to find out more about dementia, their local support services and how they could help make Guildford more dementia friendly. The hub was opened by The Worshipful Mayor of Guildford Councillor Diana Lockyer Nibbs and was attended everyday by a variety of local dementia services. The week also included dementia workshops, Health Checks given for free in Guildford’s Boots store and an exercise session led by Spirit Health Club.
