Ed Sheeran Small Bump Narrative: Telling the story from a first person
perspective whilst waiting in a hospital. (Derived from Ed Sheeran’s close friend having a miscarriage at 5 months pregnant)
...CinematographyShot Types: Close Ups – reinforce the emotion, audience is made to sympathise
more.
Medium Close Ups
Mid Shots Long Shots
...Camera Movement Tracking In
Panning Shot
From 0.08s to 0.46s there is a slow moving tracking in shot which guides the audience towards the artist.
From 0.50s to 0.58s there is panning shot from right to left.
... Tracking Out
From 0.58s to 1.50+ there is a tracking out shot from the artist who is singing. This allows for other objects and people to be in the frame. The slow place emphasises the sadness of the song.
Framing & Composition The framing of this music video is minimal...it
is shot in one room and the transitions are made through the use of the camera movement. The camera stays focused on Ed Sheeran; therefore, there appears to be only one frame which is unusual for most music videos.
The composition is simple as it doesn’t involve many ingredients. There aren’t any different settings, costumes or any performative/concept sections.
...Editing There seems to be no editing within this music
video as it is shot by using one frame.
The lyrics of the song match the setting of the music video as it refers to the miscarriage of a baby and the setting is of a hospital.
Mise-en-scene Location – hospital setting
Costume – casual clothes (jeans, hoodie, trousers). The colours are dull as the lyrics are sad. The navy blue may connote sadness, loss and as it’s dark; the opposite of peace.
Lighting – the lighting is dull and slightly dimmed so that it relates to the theme of the song.
Body Language – connotes sadness, anxiety and exhaustion due to him being slouched over with his head down.
Bob Dylan Duquesne Whistle Narrative – love story between a young man
who gets himself into trouble and a girl whom seems out of his league.
...Cinematography Medium Shot
Medium Close Up
...Camera Movement Hand-held at 1.51s
Tracking Shot at 3.21 (following the man who is following the girl)
...Framing There are a variety of different frames;
however, they aren’t very frequent which then creates a slower pace for the music video. Fast pace frames are usually found within upbeat songs. There is a frame which lasts from 3.40-3.55s
...Editing The speed of the editing is at a medium pace
to fit in with someone walking and following a narrative story.
The music matches the visuals, for example: You old rascal, I know exactly where you're goingI'll lead you there myself at the break of day...The young man knows where the girl is going and the criminals
know where the young man is going...
...Mise-en-scene Location – the location changes from being on
the streets, to being in a van and in an abandoned warehouse.
Costume – is casual everyday clothing, apart from the criminal who is wearing a casual suit with a top hat. The suit is black which connotes: power, danger, deceiving ...
... Lighting – changes from light to dark. The
video starts off light but as things get darker and the man gets in to trouble...it changes to dark.
Mumford & Sons I Will Wait Performative – the band is performing to a
large audience
...Cinematography Close Up
Medium Shot
Long Shot/Extreme
...Camera Movement Tilt shot at 1.28 to show the audience as well
as the artists performing.
Tracking Out Shot of the audience at 1.36
...Framing The lengths of the frames vary. When the
camera is focusing on the audience, the frames are longer whereas when the camera is focused on the band – the frame change is more frequent.
...Editing The visuals don’t necessarily match the lyrics
as the lyrics refer to them waiting for a girl whereas they are performing to an audience...
Mise-en-scene Location – is in a stadium/concert themed
setting Costume – the band seem to be wearing
similar clothing, which involves: a shirt with the sleeves rolled up and similar trousers. Bands often wear something to link them together (JLS – the colours)
