As we embark on the next fiscal year, it is difficult not to pause and focus on the work that was done over the last 12 months. A major goal of the foundation Board for the past two years was to increase the number of donors that made a gift to the foundation. the graphic to the right showcases the strides that have been made – upping the total percentage of attorneys who made a gift to the foundation to 6.4 percent.

A focus on sharing heartbeat stories of foundation grantees not only resulted in augmented support, but also shows piqued interest in the foundation as measured by social media analytics and participation at local events.

All of these efforts built up to one of the biggest nights of the year for the Bar foundation: the seventh annual gala. the evening – complete with a silent auction, Nifty fifty celebration and billable hour auction – generated more than $62,000 to further the foundation’s mission. thank you for making this past fiscal year a time of monumental achievement and support for legal aid and law related eduction in south Carolina.

As we begin fY 14, we are making plans for the next gala as well as some additional regional events that share the

good work of foundation grantees. Check out the upcoming events portion of the newsletter for more information.

In two years, these cost-effective regional events have generated $45,000 and increased exposure for the Foundation’s grantees.

Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse - $36,000CoDA provides professional supportive services to victims of intimate partner abuse and their children in Beaufort, Colleton, hampton and Jasper counties. Committed to the belief that safety from violence and freedom from fear are universal rights, CoDA conducts community education programs to confront the societal norms that condone abusive behavior.

Crisis Ministries - $69,000Crisis ministries provides food, shelter and hope to end homelessness and hunger one person at a time, one family at a time. the provision of legal services to this community is a key component of their work.

Lowcountry Legal Volunteers - $62,000lowcountry legal Volunteers engages community volunteers and retired attorneys in providing free advice, education and legal representation to low income families in Beaufort, Jasper and hampton counties.

South Carolina Legal Services - $1,040,000south Carolina legal services is a statewide law firm that provides civil legal services to protect the rights and represent the interests of low income south Carolinians.

Sistercare - $26,000sistercare is a program of services for battered women and their children residing in fairfield, Kershaw, lexington, Newberry and richland counties in south Carolina.

SC Appleseed Legal Justice Center - $15,000sC Appleseed fights for low income south Carolinians to overcome social, economic and legal injustice.

SC Bar Pro Bono Program - $100,000the sC Bar Pro Bono Program provides opportunities for volunteer attorneys to improve the delivery of pro bono services to the citizens of south Carolina.

Administration of JusticeNational Judicial College - $11,910the National Judicial College works to improve the administration of justice in south Carolina by increasing south Carolina’s judges’ knowledge, skills and abilities through judicial education.

Richland County CASA - $7,500richland County CAsA advocates for the best interest of abused and neglected children in richland County family Court by providing quality volunteer and legal representation to ensure every child a safe permanent and nurturing home.

SC Access to Justice Commission - $82,400the south Carolina Access to Justice Commission was established to expand and enhance legal representation to south Carolinians with low income or of modest means.

SC Bar Ask-A-Lawyer - $40,000the Ask-A-lawyer Program coordinates volunteer lawyers for televised phone banks and web chats in an effort to assist the public with its legal questions.

SC Center for Fathers and Families - $65,000the sC Center for fathers and families helps secure support for and oversees program operations and fiscal management of six fatherhood programs in 11 locations throughout south Carolina.

Upstate Mediation Center - $27,500the Center is the sole community based provider of mediation services for the indigent and low income citizens in Upstate south Carolina.

Law Related EducationSC Bar Law Related Education Division - $216,000the south Carolina Bar law related education Division is a service arm of the Bar that, since the mid-1980s, has provided teachers, school resource officers, juvenile justice personnel and lawyers with resources, materials and technical assistance to teach law and citizenship education.

SC YMCA Youth in Government - $15,000the Youth in Government program helps to create the next generation of good citizens. YIG programs demystify local, state and national governmental systems so tomorrow’s adults will know how to effect change within these systems.

USC School of Law Pro Bono Program - $15,000the sC Bar foundation Public Interest fellows Project is a year-long effort to enhance the ability of south Carolina legal services organizations by hiring and placing public service minded UsC law students as law clerks with those organizations.

South Carolina Bar Foundation 2014 GrantsEighteen organizations have received grants for the period July 2013 to June 2014.

south Carolina will continue to hold its share of leadership roles in the American Bar Association and affiliated organizations.

Justice Kaye Hearn was recently appointed to serve on the ABA Commission on IoltA. Created in 1986, the Commission supports the operations of IoltA programs throughout the country. It also monitors developments in areas that may affect IoltA operations such as banking, grantmaking, tax law and constitutional law. Justice hearn is the first appointee to the Commission from south Carolina. Justice hearn was a member of the south Carolina Court of Appeals for 15 years and was elected to the supreme Court in 2009.

William C. Hubbard, a partner at Nelson mullins riley & scarborough in Columbia, has been named president-elect of the ABA. Prior to his nomination, hubbard served as chair of the association’s house of Delegates from 2008 to 2010.

Lanny Lambert, who served on the Bar foundation board from 2004 to 2008, is secretary of the National Conference of Bar Presidents. he will succeed to the office of treasurer in 2014. lambert is an attorney with turner Padget and was president of the south Carolina Bar from 2007 to 2008.

Shannon Willis Scruggs was elected to serve a second term as president of the National Association of IoltA Programs (NAIP). established in 1986, NAIP works to enhance legal services for the poor and the administration of justice. In her first term as president, scruggs worked to establish a legacy program so that retiring or departing IoltA directors could document their thoughts for the

leaders to come. she also established a working group to revamp the IoltA.org website. In her second term, scruggs will continue her work on establishing a webinar program to help supplement the biannual meetings and to reach colleagues who otherwise might not be able to attend NAIP workshops. scruggs has been with the Bar foundation for 13 years.

the south Carolina Bar foundation is proud to announce officers Beverly A. Carroll as president, elaine fowler as president-elect and marie-louise ramsdale as secretary/treasurer.

Beverly A. Carroll, a partner at hamilton martens Ballou & Carroll, graduated from winthrop College and the University of south Carolina (UsC) school of law. she is a former member of both the sC Bar Board of Governors and the house of Delegates. she is a member of the UsC law school Alumni Council and currently serves as vice-chair of the rock hill Parks and recreation Commission and on the board of directors for the York County regional Chamber of Commerce and the rock hill economic Development Corporation.

Elaine H. Fowler, who has been named to the list of Best lawyers in America in the area of real estate for the last six years, currently serves on the board of directors of the Charleston regional Development Alliance and has served on its executive committee, in addition to other community and charitable activities. fowler has received various awards from her peers, including the American Judicature society special merit Citation for her contributions to the justice system while serving as the first female president of the south Carolina Bar and the Platinum Compleat lawyer Award by the UsC school of law Alumni Association.

Marie-Louise Ramsdale is the principal lawyer of the ramsdale law firm, llC, in mount Pleasant. A cum laude graduate of harvard law school, she practices solely in the area of family law. she is a member of the house of Delegates and serves as a volunteer for fee dispute resolution issues. In the community, ramsdale is on the board of the Charleston stage.

the foundation also welcomes new directors. Chet Chea is director of supplier diversity and small business development at michelin North America, Inc. headquartered in Greenville. Chet received his Bs in microbiology from Clemson University and his Juris Doctor from the Indiana University robert h. mcKinney school of law. he began his career serving as a white-collar crimes prosecutor with the 13th Circuit solicitor’s office in Greenville County. Prior to his current role at michelin, he served as corporate counsel where he provided legal counsel to the company’s purchasing department and real estate group. he also served as senior discovery advisor in michelin’s litigation group.

Sidney J. Evering II is director of diversity and senior counsel at Parker Poe Adams and Bernstein, llP, where he focuses his practice in public finance, economic development and local government. After obtaining his Bs in business administration from UsC and his Juris Doctor at the UsC school of law, evering began his career as an attorney with the south Carolina Association of Counties.

evering is a member of the American Bar Association, south Carolina Black lawyers Association and the south Carolina Chamber of Commerce Diversity Council and legislative Agenda task force committees. this year, he was recognized by the UsC Black law students Association with the Jonathan Jasper wright Award, which is given to an outstanding member of the legal community. evering has served his community as a member of leadership south Carolina Class of 2007 and the City Year Columbia board of directors. for his many successes, he was named as one of the state’s 20 under 40 in 2013.

J. Calhoun Watson returns to the foundation Board after having served from 2000 to 2006 and as its president in 2006. watson is a managing member of sowell Gray stepp & laffitte, llC. he received his BA from wofford College and Juris Doctor from the UsC school of law. watson has been very involved in the south Carolina Bar, holding positions such as president of the Bar’s Young lawyers Division in 1997, secretary in 2011, treasurer in 2012 and is currently president-elect. he has been a member of the house of Delegates since 1997 and has served on the Board of Governors from 1997 to 2000 and again from 2009 to the present. watson has also received local awards including the Compleat lawyer Award silver medallion from the UsC school of law Alumni Association in 2001 and historic Columbia’s Innovative leadership Award in 2010.

Playful ways to “Talk About Giving” with your familyBy Abacus Planning Group

Teaching a child to share is nothing short of a life-long process. Even as grown men and women, we gain a better understanding of what it means to give by learning from the people around us who give so much of themselves and don’t expect thanks or credit. For the legal profession, we can point to 18 examples – the legal aid, administration of justice and law related education programs supported by the SC Bar Foundation. For the attorneys working in these programs, the motivation to share more of their time, energy and knowledge is driven by a deep desire to serve and give.

So, as a parent, grandparent or someone who mentors youth, how do you instill the giving spirit similar to that of found in Foundation grantees? Have a family meeting with a fun and creative twist utilizing “Talk About Giving,” a program created by the Central Carolina Community Foundation that prompts family discussions about values, giving, money and caring for others.

The Talk About Giving website is also a vibrant resource for fostering conversations about philanthropy through weekly blogs, questions of the week and volunteer activities for children of all ages.

How would you describe the Bar Foundation’s work to your family? A recent video created by the Bar Foundation showcased the work of our Lowcountry grantees. One grantee volunteer said, “I want to help those that don’t feel that they necessarily have access to justice; that feel as though they’re not empowered.” At its core, the South Carolina Bar Foundation is all about purposeful giving to its cadre of grantees who strive each day to improve the lives of others.

Give your child the giving spirit of a Foundation grantee; share your passion for generosity with your children, nieces and nephews or grandchildren.
