7SUMMER 2012
The summer Olympic Games is a time for celebrationas athletes from hundreds of countries compete innumerous athletic competitions. The competitions arebroadcast around the word on TV and other media. The Summer Olympic Games take place every fouryears, with the next taking place in London in 2012.
Ancient OlympicsOlympia, Greece was home to the first recordedancient Olympic Games in 776 B.C. The ancientOlympic Games were held as a religious ceremonyfrom 776 B.C. until A.D. 393, when they werebanned due to religious reasons. Baron Pierre deCoubertin, a French educator, proposed a revival ofthe ancient traditions in 1894.
Modern OlympicsThe first modern-day Olympic Games were held inAthens, Greece in 1896. However, women were notallowed to compete until 1900. Due to World War Iand World War II, there were no Olympic Games in1916, 1940 and 1944. The Olympics were first cov-ered on American TV in 1960, when the Games werehosted in Rome. The symbol for the Olympics is aseries of five rings. The colors of the rings -- blue, yel-low, black, green and red -- represent the majorregions of the world: Africa, the Americas, Europeand Asia.
Participating CountriesThe 2004 Games in Athens, Greece featured 202competing countries. Many of these countries havealso hosted the Games, though there have never beenany Games hosted in Africa or South America. However, the 2016 summer Games will be held in Riode Janeiro in Brazil, so at that point Africa will be theonly continent that has not been a host site.
SportsThe summer Olympic Games revolve around manydifferent sporting events, including archery, bad-minton, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, kayak, cycling, diving, equestrian, fencing, field hockey, gym-nastics, handball, judo, modern pentathlon, mountainbiking, rowing, sailing, shooting, soccer, swimming, synchronized swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, ten-nis, track and field, triathlon, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting and wrestling. A pentathlon is a competi-tion of five sporting events: shooting, fencing, swim-ming, show jumping and running. A triathlon is acompetition that includes a swimming, running andbiking portion.

Keep Good CompanyThe people around you have a great deal of influence on yourattitude and state of well-being. Therefore, it is extremelyimportant to make wise, well-thought out choices about whoyou spend your spare time with, says Richard Carlson in Don’tSweat the Small Stuff With Your Family. Do you spend yourtime with friends who are truly nourishing to you, or do youchoose your company more randomly? Perhaps you are friendswith people without really knowing why – or out of laziness, perceived convenience or simply habit. It’s important to reeval-uate and take an honest look at how you feel when you arewith someone.
Is the person helping you grow? Is he/she a person you admireand respect? Do you share similar values? Do you feel goodabout the way you’ve spent your time together? If not, it doesn’tmean you can’t still be friends, only that you might make thedecision to spend less time with the person – which will createmore time to meet new people or to spend more time alone orwith your family.
