Our founders, Dr. William and Lillian Fishman, showed tremendous foresight when they chose to locate their new cancer research institution on the Torrey Pines Mesa in the La Jolla neighborhood of San Diego. Today, the area is one of the most vibrant biomedical research hubs in the country and Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute lies at its heart.

The Fishmans started with an innovative approach to cancer research and provided scientists with the freedom to explore new ideas. Since then the Institute has grown tremendously, both physically and in terms of its impact.
