Delta Sigma Alumni Chapter UpdateFor the past several months, the

alumni chapter has been hard at work getting established. We have received a charter from the national fraternity, been recognized by the university as an official alumni society, established a bank account for the organization and recruited several members. In recent months, our main objective has been to reconnect members by updating our extensive yet out of date contact list, and organizing events like the pig roast and homecoming. In coming months we hope to do more as an organization to serve our members as well as the alumni at large.

Goals for the BudgetIn keeping with the goals of the

alumni chapter, our focus for this fiscal year is alumni events and

undergraduate enhancement. As of right now the only major expenditures required are the chartering costs and annual dues. The rest of the budget is dedicated toward alumni events like homecoming and other regional events to be announced and the creation of the Hanna-Ross Scholarship for undergraduates. We strive to provide financial clarity and accountability for our members.

Springtime marks the annual Pi Kapp father-son pig roast at BG. This year the event became an entire weekend marked with an empathy dinner for Push America, the Pig Roast, and an after party at the attic (formerly Tuxedo Junction). With over 20 alumni in attendance, it was likely the most largely attended alumni events in years. If you weren’t in attendance, here is what you missed...

Push America Empathy Dinner

Organized by Push Chair Mark Huber, the Push America Empathy dinner was held at the Commons dining hall on campus. As a follow-up to the successful Push Date Auction, Pi Kapps brought the women who ‘purchased’ them to the dinner. Diners were given slips of paper giving them instructions for how to eat, such as “eating without use of dominant hands” or “no thumbs”. Dinners had to help each eat, lead to conversations about living with disabilities. Excellent food was provided by the Chapter Adviser John Bolster. This event, in combination with the Date Auction brought in nearly $1000 for Push America. Thanks to the new Push incentives program, Archon Steve Brinkman was also able to

provide Woodlane with a check for $500.

The Pig RoastSaturday marked the annual pig

roast held by the chapter. The event welcomed dozens of alumni from several generations including brothers who hadn’t visited the college for decades. The event was organized by Brotherhood chair Hunter Wright who purchased T-Shirts for the event and brought in professionals to roast the pig. Associate Blake Williams and his father provided the best pig in years. Archon Steve Brinkman’s girlfriend Stephanie Bolen was named this years Rose Queen and presented with the unique talents of the Delta Sigma choir singing ‘The Rose”.

After Party

After the pig roast, the party moved to the Attic, formerly Tuxedo Junction on Main Street. With nearly forty Pi Kapps in attendance ranging from pledges to graduates of the class of ‘91, fun was had by all. In true Pi Kapp fashion, many BG sorority women ditched their own sorority formals on main street in order to attend our event. Jon Urso was cordial enough to meet as many as possible. Jim Karlovec and Pete Wooste owned the pool table for the majority of the night. With a stripper pole installed into the newly renovated bar, it was no surprise that the first to use it was not a female, but none other that Timothy ‘Totts’ Totten. After the party at the

Attic, alumni dispersed to local favorites like Brathaus, Trotters and Ziggy’s. Of course, the last stop of the night for many was Myle’s pizza for a slice of heaven

...Save the Date For Homecoming 2010!

Several weeks ago, the date for homecoming 2010 on the weekend of October 2nd. Planning is still tentative, but we know that Friday evening will be the annual alumni chapter meeting, followed by a meet and greet with the undergraduates and an alumni after-party. On Saturday, Bowling Green will face off against Buffalo starting at 1PM. We hope to capitalize the big turnout from the pig roast and make this homecoming the highest attendance in our history.

Much planning is underway to include events for the whole family; we are currently in communication with the Homecoming Steering Committee about the family events that they are planning but intend to have one of our own as well. Continuing the Pi Kapp traditions of cycling for a cause, Pi Kapp alumni have recently formed a team for Race Across America. Race across America, known as the world’s toughest relay race is a 24 hour, eight day race from San Francisco to Annapolis, MD. Lead by cyclist Jim Karlovec, the team is racing both to launch Karlovec’s new organization Project Give a Wave, an awareness group for cyclist safety. Both Jim and his wife participated in RAAM last year; new to the crew are crew members Chris Shade,

Mike Masterson, Cody Berger, and Eric Nystrom.

On top of launching Karlovec’s new company, the team will also be competing for Push America. Recently, the team received official approval for RAAM to be a Push America event, meaning that even though it is not an event for Push America, the team will raise funds and ride on behalf of Push. The team’s goal is to raise $10.000 Before June 10th. You can help by going to secure.pushamerica.org/TeamGiveAWave. All donations over $25 are tax deductible and all proceeds go to Push America.

Joe BoroiA year after his tours in

South Korea and Iraq, Joe Boroi left the military to begin working as a defense contractor in Chicago for a large consulting agency. As a Project Manager, Joe lead several multi-million dollar technology initiatives before reconnecting with BGSU Pi Kapp Alum Brain Swab. With Brian's  support, Joe began work in the consumer products and retail group of an interactive marketing agency called Rosetta. Today, Joe is a Director, managing accounts with several of the world's largest online retailers. Joe continue's to leverage his military leadership background and experiences as a Pi Kapp as a foundation for managing successful business strategy for his clients.

Pi Kapp Alum form a Race Across America Team For Project Give a Wave and Push America

New Construction on CampusIf you have not been informed via numerous calls from university

employees asking for donations, major renovations are taking place in BG. Orange barrels and caution tape mark campus as new buildings are constructed across campus. As part of a 15 year renovation plan, the university plans to completely rejuvenate campus with a number of new buildings. Over the past three years, land has been cleared on the main campus and in lot 6 to prepare for new buildings. The residence life building and Rodgers Dorm also met the wrecking ball in order to make way for the new facilities. Currently, there are four construction projects taking place simultaneously. Northwest Dorm, South Central Dorm, Wolfe Center for the Arts and the Stroh Center are all scheduled for completion for the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year. Stroh Center, scheduled to house the men’s and women’s basketball arenas will replace Anderson Arena, acting as yet another effort to further advance the schools athletic program and recruit more student-athletes. At a cost of $30 million, the building was designed by Acoustic Dimensions, the same company that created Angels Stadium, ATT Park and Giants Stadium, among others. The Wolfe Center for the Arts will act as the new center for dance, theater, film and digital art production and provide space for their display. Rodgers & Two Fraternity Houses Cleared from CampusFor over five years now, the university has promised construction of a

‘Greek Village’ which would condense all greek organizations into one area. While this promise had yet take the form of concrete plans, two sixty-year old fraternity houses have been cleared in order to construct a new dorm. Originally, Rodgers dorm was scheduled for demolition in December with no impact on the Phi Tau and Sig Ep houses, both located on the courtyard of the quad. When it was discovered that Rodgers waterline tied in directly with the two houses, the university decided that they must cleared as well. The university gave the residents of both houses several days to decide where to relocate on campus. As of now members of Phi Tau is residing in Founders Hall and Sig Ep’s will be moving to Conklin in the fall, forcing Global Village to relocate.
