Rehab, Restore, Return If you reach for the three R’s after a hospitalization, you will be well onto the road of recovery. Many find themselves in the hospital unexpectedly due to a fracture or medical condition; others may have planned their hospitalization to have surgery. Whatever the reason, you want to get back to your pre-hospitalization condition as soon as possible. To do that you must put the three R’s as your number one priority REHAB Your doctor will order physical therapy, occupational therapy and/or speech therapy. Participate fully in these daily sessions with licensed therapists. Physical Therapy focuses on balance, standing and then walking. Occupational therapy is not what it sounds like, to get back to work. It involves re-learning daily activities, such as how to safely bathe, dress and complete daily tasks at home. Speech therapy is vital if you are recovering from a stroke. It can also be helpful if you have lost strength and have difficulty swallowing. RESTORE Your recovery does not only happen in the rehab department. You may be weak from inactivity and surgery. The proper diet, rest and monitored by nurses go hand in hand with a therapy regimen. You may be on prescription pain medication or finishing IV antibiotics. A few extra weeks of monitoring your diet and medications will have added benefits in the long run and may prevent a return to the hospital, and a step backwards in your recovery. RETURN The ultimate goal! But before you walk over that threshold, make sure you are prepared to return. A safe home environment is another way to ensure that you are home to stay. Have someone complete a safety checklist prior to your discharge and make any home repairs or installations. Handrails in the bath, delivery of home health care equipment, clutter free environment are just a few things that can help get your home ready for your return. If you need help with housework or cooking, make arrangements to hire someone before you get home. Although you may be anxious to return home after a hospital stay, be patient. Complete recovery is not achieved until you can manage at home safely. Focusing on completing all three R’s, Rehab, Restore and Return, will make sure you are home to stay. BE AN ANGEL DAY is a non-profit, non-denominational event celebrated annually onAUGUST 22. This is a day on which people aroundthe world are encouraged to be like the angels –God’s selfless servants – and ‘do one small act ofservice for someone; be a blessing in someone’s life.’The 1st Annual BE AN ANGEL DAY was celebratedAugust 22, 1993.

Those who wish to participate are encouraged to gowithin their hearts and celebrate BE AN ANGELDAY in whatever way the ‘God Voice’ within inspiresthem. It can be celebrated on an individual basis byanonymously performing a small act of service orwith a group by holding a joyous angel party withgroup meditation where participants invite the angelsto inspire them with God thoughts on ways to be ofservice to their community.

The whole purpose of the annual celebration of BEAN ANGEL DAY is to establish a cooperation inservice to God between the human and angelickingdoms. The key word that describes the angels isservice and BE AN ANGEL DAY is a day to be likethe angels and perform divinely inspired acts of

service for others. BE AN ANGEL DAY is a perfectopportunity to deliver to others messages of love, hope, faith, and peace – messages from God that theangels deliver to us in our lives daily. Together wecan serve God with the angels.

BE AN ANGEL – DO ONE SMALL ACT OFSERVICE FOR SOMEONE; BE ABLESSING IN SOMEONE’S LIFE.

When we think of angels, we think of beings withwings,

flying into our lives with God’s blessings. Equally important to the blessings they deliver, is our being conscious of their wings and move-

ment through flight. These two important angelic essences stir within

us a yearning to be like angels and claim our wings and experience freedom of

movement – movement upwards in consciousness; movement out of old patterns; movement closer to

God. – Jayne Feldman

Grandparents Day has a threefoldpurpose: to honor grandparents; togive grandparents an opportunity toshow love for their children’schildren and to help childrenbecome aware of the strength, information and guidance olderpeople can offer.

It started in 1970 when WestVirginia housewife, Marian LucilleHerndon McQuade, initiated acampaign to set aside a special dayjust for Grandparents. The first

Grandparents Day was proclaimedin 1973 in West Virginia and, fiveyears later, the US Congress passedlegislation proclaiming the firstSunday after Labor Day as NationalGrandparents Day. September waschosen for the holiday, to signifythe “autumn years” of life.

Today this event, begun by onlya few, is observed by millionsthroughout the United States.Schools, churches, and seniororganizations honor grandparentswith special events. Families enjoysmall, private gatherings. Othershold family reunions with a story-telling time, grandparents relatingstories of their past and enlight-ening children about the “good olddays.” It’s the perfect time toenhance communication betweenthe generations. Special talents, such as cooking, sculpting orquilting can be passed on to thosewho display an interest. Old familymusic, songs and dances, along

with their meanings and origins, are important in maintaining astrong sense of family background.Together, re-construct a family tree, giving children the opportunity tolearn the ancestral line of theirfamily. Strive to preserve particularethnic or religious beliefs.

Grandparents Day can signify aloving spirit that lives within usthroughout the year – a spirit oflove and respect for our elders.

Along with Grandparents Day,we should not forget shut-ins andthose in nursing homes who areunable to be with their families orhave no families. Include thesepeople in the mainstream throughcards, community projects andvisitation at times other than justholidays. Remember, there areelderly who would love anopportunity to be a Foster Grand-parent. Parents, churches, schools, and senior organizations, helpchildren to adopt a grandparent!

First Sunday After Labor Day

What’s good for the body is good for the spirit as well. As people grow older, it’s very important to keepmotivated, to say to yourself, “I can do it.” Regularexercise is even more important for seniors than otherage groups since the risk of disease and lost mobilityis greater and the positive effects are realized morequickly. But, as we all know, the hardest part isgetting started. . .

Tips for getting started. Look for daily oppor-tunities to exercise in work and play. Force yourselfto walk by parking your car several parking aislesaway from the store or your office entrance and walkbriskly. Choose an exercise you like and stick with it.Use the buddy system. Arrange to have a friend meetyou – It’s harder to say no to exercise when youexercise with a friend. Walk, swim, climb, bicycle, dance, fish. Join a walking group or visit your local Y,recreation center, park, church, or senior center.

Physical Fitness. Choose an exercise that you likeand stick with it. Engage in 30 minutes of aerobicexercise and weight-bearing exercise every day.

Social Well-Being. Contribute time to your com-munity through local volunteer groups, religiousorganizations, or civic groups. Stay in close contactwith friends and family. Write, email, or call someonedaily.

Mental Wellness. Keep your mind exercised, too,by reading, learning a new skill, and researchingsomething that interests you. Develop a hobby – it’snever too late to learn how to play the piano.

Financial Fitness. Save at least 10% of yourincome and invest in savings plans that compoundinterest. Establish financial goals, stick to a plannedbudget, sign up for a retirement plan.

the hottest days of the year in the NorthernHemisphere. These are the long, hot days when

families spend the day boating and children are freefrom the school bell and cool off in the lawn

sprinklers or nearest pool. Then, afternoon rainshowers give us all an excuse to retreat back inside

PPoossttssccrriipptt“You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick inthe teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.”— Walt Disney

Having lived all my life in Florida a trip to DisneyWorld is almost an annual summer tradition. Whenmy children were younger, I loved enjoying the“magic” over and over again. There is no denying thatthere is something special that happens when you walkdown Main Street on the first day of a DisneyVacation. My fascination for Walt and his world hasextended beyond simply being a “guest” of the manyresorts. I have enjoyed learning about the DisneyManagement philosophies and have applied them atThe Floridean for years.

Cheerful, well dressed staff members that work ina well kept, spotless environment is welcome in anyorganization. Although rehab isn’t quite as fun as TheCarousel of Progress in Tomorrowland (my favorite),

we want to ensure all patientshave a pleasant experience in aprofessional environment. OfDisney’s many philosophies ofmanagement, two core aspects areservice excellence and loyalty.

As part of a new company-wide focus on serviceexcellence, The Floridean is revising our CustomerSatisfaction Surveys to get your feedback and find outwhere we need to improve. In mid-August you will beable to complete the Customer Satisfaction Survey on-line. I would love to hear what everyone has to say. Ifyou have a personal experience at The Floridean, logon to: www.floridean.com and click the “CompleteCustomer Satisfaction Survey” icon.

Have a great summer, Kelley Rice-Schild
