Summary of The Tinderbox story
A soldier meets a witch who tells him he can becomerich if he will retrieve a tinderbox from inside a hollowtree.The tinderbox used to be her grandmother's.
The witch warns him about three dogs guarding treasure andgives the soldier an apron for them to sit on. She tells himthey will not harm him and he will be able to take as muchtreasure as he wants to.The soldier does as he is asked and becomes wealthy.
The soldier goes to the city and then lives the life of anobleman but he is also generous and gives some of hismoney to the poor.
The soldier hears about a princess in the copper castleand wants to see her, but he learns she is locked awaybecause of a prophecy that a soldier will marry her.
Soon the soldier’s money runs out and he is poor and cold inhis room. He remembers the tinderbox has a candle in it.When he strikes the tinderbox, one of the dogs appears.The soldier asks the dog for money.
