Open Triples Competition 2014

OUR ANNUAL TRIPLES OPEN COMPETITION WILL NOW BE HELDON EARLY MAY BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY AT THE AIR HOSTESS,STANSTEAD AVENUE, TOLLERTON, NOTTINGHAM.

Air HostessOpen TriplesCompetition -Bank HolidayMonday 5th May2014

Early Mayday Bank Holiday Monday dawned dry and sunny, ideal forthe event. Seventeen teams came together renewing theiracquaintances across 9 pistes. The games were limited to one hourmaximum to enable each team to play five matches, two before beingserved lunch and three during the a ernoon. This worked well keepingthe compe on flowing, with the chairman only having to ring the bellon a couple of occasions to call  me.

At the lunch me break, the compe ve nature of the play was suchthat only two out of the seventeen teams had won both their matches,the 'Warriors' from Kegworth (a resemblance to last year's champions itseems) and the blue clad 'Snappers' from Mansfield. Killarney also hadmaximum points with the aid of a first round bye.

However the break did not suit any of these teams as they all lost theirthird match, 'The Brewers' from the Red Lion must have been wellfor fied giving away only 17 points all a ernoon, but local team 'Will'with an even  ghter defence dropped only 14. The a ernoon sessionproduced some interes ng games to ensure a very  ght result at theend of the day.

At the final countdown every team had won at least one of theirgames, but no team had won all five. Four teams had only lost onegame and these had to be separated by a countback on points. Even so,in third place (with equal points difference of +25) there was  ebetween the Mansfield 'Snappers' and the Red Lion 'Brewers'. Therunners‐up spot was taken by the 'Warriors' (last year's winners of theshield ‐ Jim, Ma hew and Richard) with a points difference of +28.

2013 Season

The Chairman's Boule d'Argent 2013

The Chairman’s Boule d’Argent team trophy

(This competition was newly inaugurated in 2010 and is an

inter-team competition within the club)

The Chairman’s “Boule d’Argent” competition for 2013between the club’s three teams was played out on

Monday 30th September. The conditions were dry butcool with signs of summer being left behind for this finalbattle of the season.

As the turnout of members for each team varied, to achieve an even balance of play, some random“on loan “substitutions were allowed as there was a full complement of AH5 members. Thisarrangement gave each team 3 pairs per round. The first round of doubles was between AH6 & AH5with the latter winning two games out of the three.

The second round pitched AH3 against AH6 in which AH6 again came out unfortunately on thewrong side of a 2-1 scoreline. However this did set up an interesting final round between AH3 &AH5 with both teams having won 2 games and losing 1.

It was decided to put a time limit on this last round to ensure that play was completed before “timegentlemen please” was called at the bar. Two of the games were finished well before the bell with

AH3 winning one game13-3, only to becounteracted by AH5winning the next 13-0.All to play for in theremaining game.

The pressure was onthe reigning championsAH5 (represented byAndrew & Malcolm) asRichard & Jim for AH3stormed ahead in theearly stages . AH5steadied the ship with a5 at one one end gettingtheir noses in front. Withtime running out AH3

‘took the one’ to ensure another end could be played before the 'bell' as the deficit had beenreduced to just 2 points. Tension was high, AH3 had one in the head but were unable to secureanother point so lost the game by one point (8-9) giving victory to the holders of the trophy- team

AH5, their name to be engraved on the silverware for the 4th year in succession.

Thanks to all the members present for producing a close exciting competition and a special thankyou to Peter for organising and running the event.

Club Pairs Competition 2013

Club Triples Competition 2013

AHPC Club Triples Competition 2013

For the 4th year of this event, the evening ofMonday 19th August 2013 was pleasantlywarm and dry. Seventeen members nameswent into the mix for the draw with James(ex Plough) joining in, so giving Peter (theorganiser) a nice round number of 6 tripleteams on his scoresheet.

The games were played to 13 points or 30 minutes, whichever came first, witheach team playing four games during the evening. Ian, Rob and Chris startingstrongly winning the first 2 games, until confronted by Richard, Bev andAndrew who held them to an exciting eleven all tie at the bell. Malcolm, Kevinand James also had a good start winning 11-1 but then faded along with thedaylight. Mac, Keith and Peter yo-yo’d along win, loss, win, loss. Trev, Mikeand Dennis peaked in their third game but too late to impress.

Coming from a first game loss, Ann, Will and Steve got their acttogether winning all the remaining games. In the final tally they were theonly team with 3 wins, hence taking the Triples Champions title for 2013.Ian, Rob and Chris shared 2½ wins with Richard, Bev and Andrew but took therunners-up spot on points difference.

Thanks to Peter for his faultless organisation of the whole event. We now look forward tothe running of the “Munro Challenge”, our club’s pairs competition, to be held next month.

Club Singles Competition 2013

The competition for the “Singles Champion Trophy” was newly inaugurated in 2010 and isheld yearly within the Air Hostess Pétanque Club.

AIR HOSTESS INDIVIDUAL PETANQUE COMPETITION 2013

Monday 15th. July 2013

MATCH REPORT

Won last year by Chris, 19 members turned out on this evening during the “summer of 13” heatwaveto do battle for the Club Singles Trophy. To make life less complicated for the organizer, he (Peter)decided to stand aside and concentrate on keeping the timing and scoring under control. So,eighteen players set about playing singles – first to 7 points or 10 minutes whichever came first, withdifferent opposition each game.

In ideal warm conditions, (some thought akin to playing “en Provence”) eight rounds were playedthroughout the evening. Some interesting situations were encountered, none moreso than Macversus Mike in the third round finishing in a tie, each player unable to get the vital seventh point.Keith managed to halve both of his final games (5-5) against Ann and then against Sue.

In the final tally, no-one won all 8 games, equally so no-one lost all their games. Only 3 players won6 matches, but with a half under his belt as well against Steve, Will’s 6 wins gave him the title of‘Singles Champion 2013’ having a points difference of +28.

Malcolm was the runner-up with 6 wins (+19) and Rob in third also with 6 wins (+10).

Peter presented the prizes, although the actual trophy didn’t come to light until later in the week, found hiding in the bar behind a large bottle of Bailey’s, Andrew rightfully denying having had it onhis mantlepiece for the last 3 years.

Many thanks to Peter for all his organizing which made for a very enjoyable evening for allconcerned.

We now look forward to the Pairs Competition for the “Munro Challenge Trophy” to be played next

Open Triples Competition 2013

OUR ANNUAL TRIPLES OPEN COMPETITIONWILL NOW BE HELD ON EARLY MAY BANKHOLIDAY MONDAY AT THE AIR HOSTESS,STANSTEAD AVENUE, TOLLERTON,NOTTINGHAM.

This is the start of the season and has a great

social atmosphere as old acquaintances are

once again renewed at this annual gathering; last

year was a bit on the damp side, but

previously we have seen an open barbeque

simmering in the background with ale and wine flowing under the cloudless blue skies – a warm

summer’s day in spring producing some high class entertainment and enjoyment for all involved.

Air Hostess Open Triples Competition - Bank Holiday Monday 6th May2013Bank Holiday Monday found the weather a replica of that experienced twoyears ago, also 17 teams competing on the warmest & sunniest day of theyear so far at this annual event.

In order toavoid slowplay and tokeep toscheduleensuring afull day’splay foreveryone, the gameswere limitedto amaximumduration offortyminutes. This thenenabled theday’s play tobe split intothree gamesbefore lunch

with a further two following the “ale & cottage pie” break.Team 8 (bearing some resemblance to the 3 bearded infiltrators of last year)made an immediate impact coming from well behind to beat the “Fivers” inthe very first game, but later failed to keep up their momentum. The Red Liontwo beards team were over their first hurdle with no points against.Nutbrook’s ‘Phil’ & ‘DJR’ teams had all three games under their belts bylunchtime, as did ‘Red Lion 3’. AHPC’s Chris Sue & Andrew were also in formmaking the 4th team unbeaten at the break. After suitable refreshment supplied by the pub, Kate’s Red Lion team wontheir next game by the narrowest of margins, with Maggie’s taking both postlunch games. NCPC’s ‘Thorpe’ & ‘Carnill’ teams had some difficult spells withthe latter eventually jumping with ease over ‘Nutter’s Brook’. Simon’s ‘ThreeWise Monkeys’ morning session proved most productive whereas Brian’s NCPCgrew stronger during the day, as did AHPC’s ‘Arthur Tenner’ and ‘Fivers’teams. ‘Nutbrook Sam’ and ‘Killarney’ had mixed fortunes but at the end ofthe day there was only one clear winner. Having won all five matches, ‘RedLion 3’ (Jim, Matthew and Richard) took the title. The runner’s up spot had tobe mathematically decided with no less than 6 teams winning 4 of their 5games.With apointsdifference of+16 andidenticalpoints inboth the ‘for’and ‘against’columns,‘NCPC No.1’and‘NutbrookDJR’ wereequal sixth.Chris Sue &Andrew infifth (+21),‘ArthurTenner’ werefourth with apd of +22.Red Lion’sRobbie & Co(+38) tookbronze

The Leslie Nunn Trophy 2013

The Annual Leslie Nunn Trophy competition was played away at Doncaster on Saturday 27th April2013

Nine club members travelled north through the arctic circle to the Ship Inn at Newington. Thereappeared to be a northerly element in the wind blown showers that regularly interrupted play. Themelée consisted of 3 pairs and a triple with two games played before lunch - a little rain delayed but superbly warming sustinence. The members reluctantly vacated the homely warmth of the bar totackle the weather and remaining games during the afternoon. Unfortunately the sun didn't smile onthe visitors from the south and the home team ran out easy winners, retaining the Leslie NunnTrophy with 13 wins losing only 3 games.

However we thank the Doncaster PC for their hospitality on the day, with special thanks to the ShipInn for providing shelter for a great lunch. We look forward to next years battle at the Air Hostesspossibly later in the season to capture some summer warmth.

The Chairman's Boule d'Argent 2012

The Chairman’s Boule d’Argent team trophy

(This competition was newly inaugurated in 2010 and is an

inter-team competition within the club)

Monday 1st. October saw a good turnoutfor the final club competition of theseason with each of our three teamsvying for supremacy to clinch thechairman’s “Boule d’Argent” trophy.Sue’s AH3 team set the pace at the start taking two of the threepairings against last year’s winners AH5. Richard’s AH6 team alsostarted well with two wins out of three.Initially it was hoped to play all the games to 13 points but that wasscuppered by one game lasting over 75 minutes as the treasurersmoothed out the divots with his size "13s" and plodded on withreferences to a certain Derbyshire team ringing in his ears!Rob’s AH5 team managed to raise their game as the eveningprogressed, winning all their remaining games and ran out winners onthe night with 4 wins. Richard’s and Sue’s teams came in equal second, each with two wins and a draw. There were one or two mutterings regarding the timing periods of thegames which were a bit unfair considering the whole organisation hadbeen done singlehandedly by the chairman, who had had to adjust onthe night to get completion on time.Back in the bar, Kevin presented the “Boule d’Argent” trophy to thewinning team “Air hostess 5” with choc prizes for both runners-up.Although he had to take a bit of stick , thanks must go to Peter fororganising and running the competition..

Club Singles Competition 2012

The competition for the “Singles Champion Trophy” was newly inaugurated in 2010 and isheld yearly within the Air Hostess Pétanque Club.

AIR HOSTESS INDIVIDUAL PETANQUE COMPETITION 2012

SINGLES COMPETITIONMONDAY 23rd JULY

MATCH REPORT

Sixteen members of the Air Hostess club competed for the annual singles trophy on a lovely warmsunny evening.

Every entrant drew out their own numbered cochonnet and then played 8 games against differentplayers following a suitably complicated sequence. The games were played first to seven points andwe managed to fit all the games into a pretty busy couple of hours.

Good pointing is vital in singles which reduced the advantage usually held by the good shooters. Many of the games were closely fought and won by different people with no clear winner emerging.Everyone lost at least two games.

At the end four players were tied for first on 6 wins each.

Points difference then came into play with the following scores -

Will +16, Andrew +20, Mac +6, Chris +22

So Chris was declared the winner of the AHPC Singles Trophy and he also received a smallerreplica trophy to keep.

Thanks to everyone who came to help make this a most enjoyable evening and thanks to all thosewho helped in preparing the pistes and keeping the scores.

We now look forward to the other club competitions - triples on Monday 20/08/12, pairs on Monday10/09/12 and the team event on Monday 24/09/12

Club Triples Competition 2012

AHPC Club Triples Competition 2012

This was the third year that the club has held it’s triplescompetition. This year’s event took place on the warm

balmy evening of Monday 20th August with 15 clubmembers taking part. We welcome back into our fold anold pétanque colleague – Ian Munro, who has recentlyreturned to Nottingham, and who surprised us all byreappearing on the piste, his enthusiasm for the game stillat a high level 5 years on.

The games were played to 13 points or 30 minutes whichever came first.

Each team played 4 games ensuring that everyone played everyone else. Will and Kevin’s teamwere in sparkling form annihilating the much fancied team of Malcolm, Rob and Chris in the secondround.

Ann, Steve & David, running short of playing time on occasions, managed to draw two of theirgames, whereas Peter & Ian T. won 2 of their four games with one drawn. Sue and Ian M. startedwell with a win but found the 30 minute period too short to show their ability to succeed underpressure. However there was only one team with the winning combination – Mike , Mac and Andrewtaking the title with 3 wins out of 4. Will & Kevin and Peter & Ian T were in equal second place with 2wins and a draw each.

Peter and Karen presented the prizes, chocolates to the not quite successful, wine to the runners-upand the Club Triples Cup with individual trophies to the winning team of Mike, Mac & Andrew.

Thanks go to Peter and Ann for organising and running the event.

Easter Triples Open Competition 2012

OUR ANNUAL TRIPLES OPEN COMPETITIONIS HELD ON EASTER MONDAY AT THE AIRHOSTESS, STANSTEAD AVENUE,TOLLERTON, NOTTINGHAM.

This is the start of the season and has a great

social atmosphere as old acquaintances are

once again renewed at this annual gathering; last

year saw an open barbeque simmering in the

background with ale and wine flowing under the

cloudless blue skies – a warm summer’s day in spring which produced some high class

entertainment and enjoyment for all involved.

This year saw a slightly different playing environment where battle took place on possibly the

wettest day of the year under leaden skies with persistent rain. However a full house of 22 teams

from far & wide were not to be deterred and some fine play resulted despite the conditions.

The Leslie Nunn Trophy 2012

The Annual Leslie Nunn Trophy was played for on Saturday 21 April 2012 under an unpredictableApril sky. A total of 20 players (10 from The Air Hostess and 10 from Doncaster Petanque Club)played a melee competition over 5 rounds.

Each round consisted of 2 triples and 2 pairs!

A gallant (injured) Malcolm marked the results score card for 3 rounds until the pain took over andhe had to retire!

The teams also retired to the pub for lunch! At this stage Doncaster were ahead on games 7 - 5!

Obviously refreshed our team pulled level after the next round making it 8 - 8! All to play for now!

This final round was very tense and the final result hinged on the final game left to play! Ann(pro) and Bryan (a very new player) fought magnificently, measuring and debating, but unfortunatelythey lost only by 13 - 11 which made the result 10 games all!

Points sealed the day and 6 points gave the trophy to Doncaster!

My thanks to everyone who played, you did really well, and there's always next year!

Sue.

AIR HOSTESS INDIVIDUAL PETANQUE COMPETITION 2011

Monday 25th July 2011 saw the second individual petanque completion. The competition was wellsupported with 20 team members turning up to play.

Played as a pairs competition over five games with each player having a different partner for eachgame. One point was awarded for each win and a half point for a draw.

It was a close fought contest with no player scoring five wins, but with four players each scoringfour points it came down to count back on points difference over the five matches.

Rob MacShane was the eventual winner with +31 just beating Peter Johnson-Marshall into secondplace by four points with +27, Andrew Winter came third with +22.

Club Triples Competition 2011

AHPC Club Triples Competition 2011

The club held it's secomd annual 'members only' triplescompetition on Monday July 11th 2011.

22 players turned out to have an enjoyable competitionin hazy but warm summer sunshine.

Names were placed into boxes depending on theirhome team, and then one was drawn from each box inan attempt to get a mix of players in each triple.

20 minutes were allowed for each of four games (with suitable breaks for topping up of glasses),“Tinkerbell” Johnson-Marshall sounding his bell to signify the beginning and end of each match.

3 Teams finished with 3 wins and one loss so that a calculation of points for & against finallyproduced a winner by one point. Ann Thompson, Will MacShane and Steve “landlord” Marshallwere pronounced winners.

The Leslie Nunn Trophy 2011

On Saturday May 7th 2011 seven players motored up the A1 to play for the Leslie Nunn Trophyat Doncaster Petanque's new venue The Ship. The new piste at first glance resembled a sandybeach, but proved to be very challenging! Play commenced with 2 games of triples and both teams went in for lunch with scores level. The carvery and real ale at lunchtime was very good, perhaps too good, as in the pairs thatfollowed, Doncaster proved too strong for us and they kept the Leslie Nunn Trophy for another yearwith a final result of 8-6!Thank you to all the players who turned out and lets hope that on home ground next year we canwin it back.

Club Pairs Competition 2011

The annual Air Hostess Petanque Club's Pairscompetition will now be fought for "The MunroChallenge Trophy" on Monday 26th September 2011.(for report see "Read More"). The trophy was renamed in 2007 in honour of our longestserving member, Ian Munro, who has moved on to newpastures and whose name appears most frequently on theoriginal Pair's Cup

Munro Cup Club Pairs Competition - Monday 26th September 2011

Peter organised the other 16 members present into pairings drawn out of the hat (jar) for this year’s“Munro Challenge”. There were some mutterings of “fix” when the MacShanes were pairedtogether. Each pair would play four games with time limit of 30 minutes per game. This time periodwas reduced towards the end of the evening, some pointing a finger at the treasurer who refused tobe rushed from his even paced deliveries!

At the end of the evening no one pairing had lost all their games, this had given rise to some closelyfought matches.

The yoyo team of Kevin & David, fluctuating between wins & losses, gained the bronze medalposition with 2 wins edging out (with superior points difference) the Keith & Andrew pairing who aftera poor start won their last two games.

Landlord Steve was very much at home in his back garden landing 3 wins with partner John, givingthem the runners-up slot. However the MacShane & Son pairing proved very strong winning all fourgames although Sue & Malcolm gave them a fright just before the bell.

Peter presented wine to the runners-up Steve & John with Rob & Will taking the Munro Cup , wineand individual trophies.

Thanks to Peter and Ann for organising the competition, Malcolm for the trophies and all the clubmembers for making it a very pleasant evening.

Easter Triples Open Competition 2011

OUR ANNUAL TRIPLES OPEN COMPETITIONWAS HELD ON EASTER MONDAY 25th.

APRIL 2011 AT THE AIR HOSTESS,STANSTEAD AVENUE, TOLLERTON,

NOTTINGHAM.

All the ingredients were in place to ensure a very

enjoyable day; a packed full house with 20

competing teams from far and wide, not a spare

piste in sight and a wonderful social atmosphere

as old acquaintances were once again renewed at this annual gathering; an open barbeque

simmering in the background with ale and wine flowing under the cloudless blue skies – a warm

summer’s day in spring which produced some high class entertainment and enjoyment for all

involved.

Each of the 20 teams played 5 games, the barbequed lunch being available as needed to suit theplay. Four teams had a great start winning all of their first three games, these being “The 3Crowns”, “Stone”, “The Irregulars” (not quite so!) and “NCPC 2” from the newly inaugurated Nottm.

City Club. There was some heightening oftension when two of these unbeaten teams metin the fourth round, Alex and the Forbes’ NCPC 2 battling against team ‘Stone’ foundthemselves 10-6 in front heading for glory butStone’s ladies pointed, fired and measuredtheir team to an exciting 13-12 win.

The "Red Lion" team had mixed fortunesthroughout the day winning 3 out of the 5games but conceding to their compatriots "RedLion Mix" 12-13 in the final end of the day.Similar fortunes befell "JAM" from the AirHostess as their two lost games were againsttheir in-house rivals "The Irregulars" and "Guys& Doll"

The teams from West Hallam had a tense 4th round when "Nutbrook 3" and "Nutbrook 4" weredrawn against each other with the latter coming out on top in a 12-13 thriller.

At the end of the day there were two teams with four wins out of five, with “Midnight Marauders”having a great post-lunch run, pipping “The 3 Crowns” on points difference to grab the runners-upspot. Team “Stone” completed their perfect day winning all 5 games and taking the top prizes. Ourchairman Peter presentedthe Shield trophy, cashprizes, wine and individualtrophies to the winners,runners-up and third place.

The club would like tothank all those whoparticipated in making thisa truly memorable day, withspecial thanks to all themembers for their inputsetting up and preparingthe pistes, especiallyto Mike for a sterling(£££!!) performance withthe raffle tickets, Malcolmfor producing the individualtrophies and Ann & Peter(with family) for organisingand running the wholeevent. 2010 Season

The Chairman's Boule d'Argent 2010

“The Chairman’s Boule d’Argent” team trophy

The club’s final pétanque battle of the season took place at the Air Hostess pub on the dampish

evening of Monday 27th September 2010. A great turnout of 26 members were keen to secure the“Chairman’s Boule d’Argent” trophy for their respective teams - Air Hostess “3”, “5”, “6” and “8”.These four teams were to produce some nailbiting stuff in their bids to be the first get their name onthe trophy for this newly inaugurated inter-team competition. The Chairman, Peter, had not onlypersonally produced a fine trophy but organised the whole event as a ‘thank you’ to all the clubmembers for their support during another successful season.

Play was under way shortly after 7 pm and in round one, AH3’s Sue & Mac lost out to AH5’sAndrew & Mike 9-13, whilst Rob & Malcolm were in fine form against Ann & Ian (13-*!) to give AH5two wins out of two.

Steve and Chris put AH8 ahead against Richard & Kevin as the other AH6 pair Den & Steve K.were narrowly beaten 11-13 by Zena & Alex, giving AH8, also, 2 wins from 2 at the end of the firstround .

Round two saw each of the four teams win one game and lose the other with only narrow marginsof victory, the winning pairings being those of Mike & Julie, Kevin & David and Beth & Brian. withMike W.& Will being pushed all the way by Dianne & Simon

Third round wins by Mike & Julie and Mac & Sue made sure that AH3 finished ahead of Richard’sAH6 team. In this final round, tensions began to rise as both the AH5 team and the AH8 team hadhad 3 wins from 4 and they were now pitted against each other. Steve, the landlord, paired withChris played a great game to beat the MacShanes 13-11 and with Brian & Alex well in command and8-0 up against Peter & Malcolm it looked as if team “8”s name was next for the plate engraver.

However, under the sodium floodlights, Malcolm requested a change of coche from the orange towhite and then AH5 pair began to reduce the deficit one point at a time, with Malcolm pointing welland Peter finding his firing range as the pressure mounted. The scores became level at 8-8, by thistime all other games had been completed and the crowd was silently absorbed with this final contestthus increasing the tension on the piste. At 11- 9 in favour of AH5, Malcolm put his boule in front ofthe coche, Brian thenpointed a few inchespast but closer –Peter fired andremoved Brian’s shotboule, Alex wasunable to regain theadvantage andMalcolm’s final boulecrept in on the lowside to give AH5victory 13-9.

The maths seemedcomplicated, butunder the lights backin the bar, Mike D.presented the“Chairman’s Bouled’Argent” trophy tothe “Air Hostess 5”team which had secured a greater overall points difference.

A brilliant night’s entertainment to close the competitive season and a great deal of appreciationgoes to Peter for his creation and organisation of this event which will now be an annual seasonfinale at the Air Hostess.

Knockout Plate Final

Knock-out Plate Final - 16th. September 2010

On a cool September evening the Red Lion hosted the Knockout Plate Final – an all “Air Hostess”affair, ‘Air Hostess 5’ taking on ‘Air Hostess 6’. The latter had battled their way through some toughgames in previous rounds, especially the semi-final against Killarney Park 2, where a final fortuitousroll of the boule at 12-12 saw them through to their first ever final.

The scene was set and both ofthese rival teams brought their ownsupport , with a third Air Hostessteam (AH8) also in attendance, sittingon the fence with that non-partisanlook!

Air Hostess 5’s pairing of Peter andAndrew were in devastating form and

did not let Air Hostess 6’s pair ofRichard & Kevin settle getting 5points at the first end and they were

home and dry by the 5th end whenRichard’s shot boule was blasted offpiste by Andrew to complete the rout.

The boot was on the other foot for the other pairing's game. Dave & Simon of AH6 with someexcellent pointing were 5-0 up after 3 ends against AH5’s Rob & Will whose firing shots were slow tofind their mark. However with some fortunate ricochets from Will’s shooting in the next end, thedeficit was reduced by 4 points. Some great pointing and firing by all 4 players had the crowd applauding regularly. At 6-5 in AH5’s favour Simon produced the shot of the match taking out Rob’sboule to draw level at 6 apiece.

A classic game of petanque was now evolving, never more than a couple of points in it up to 11-12when Will’s final boule rolled in to keep the game alive 12-12. However with game on the ground forDave & Simon, Will was unable to reproduce a similar shot on the last end and AH6 levelled up thematch.

The second half of the match gave a reversal of fortunes for the AH6 pairing, Dave & Simon couldn’treproduce the form against Peter & Andrew. The AH5 pairing continued to be in scintillating form withexquisite pointing and again wrapped up the game after only 5 ends.

Kevin & Richardhowever had hadtime to reflect andput 3 points on theboard at the restart.Rob & Will dragged itback to lead 5-3 andanother classic washatching. Tensionwas building at 7-7when some short 6metre ends wereplayed and theadvantage leanedtowards AH5 as theypulled ahead to 11-8.With Will’s last bouleon the coche, Robonly needed one ofhis two remainingboules to point in,winning the game13-8 thus sealing

the match for ‘Air Hostess 5’ and the Knock-out Plate for 2010.

Club Singles Competition

Under clear skies on 27th May, 18 members played five games in a bid to be the first to havetheir name engraved on the new “Singles Champion Trophy”. This newly inaugurated competitionwill now be held yearly within the Air Hostess Pétanque Club.

In order to get a good cross section of play, the games were played almost non-stop on a timedbasis across 9 pistes. This hectic schedule brought about some interesting results amongst the

members, with Barbara doing a sterling job under some pressure keeping the scores.

At the end of play, 3 members were unbeaten winning all their games, Peter Andrew and Den.After a recount Andrew emerged as the club’s first singles champion having a better “points for”

tally but only by a single point from the runner-up Dennis with Peter in 3rd place . Ian was alone infourth place being the only player to have dropped just one game. No-one lost all their gamesalthough Malcolm was helped out by a “winning” bye!

The trophies were produced and presented by Peter to Andrew along with wine, Dennis alsobeing rewarded with a bottle of the red stuff.

Thanks all those members who helped organise and make the evening the success it was, especially to Peter for his huge input into the whole event. We now look forward to the possibility offollowing this with a new “Triples” competition later in the season for club members.

Pre-season Friendly v Nutbrook

Pre-season Friendly Match against Nutbrook

The damp and constant drizzle did not prevent ten teams doing battle at the Air Hostess' pistes onThursday 29th. April. Although termed a friendly, there was no lack in competitive aggression. Annorganised the teams into pairs formation and despite the inclement weather some interesting gamesensued. All other teams were well into their second round games before the home pairing of Peter &Malcolm eventually posted their 13 first round points on the board.

Rob & Will had a couple of tough games as did Nutbrook's Steve & Sheila and Dave & Jennie, allthree pairings coming unstuck in the first 2 rounds. David & Sue won both their games for the hometeam, Barry & Marilyn also Kevin & Richard secured one of their games as did Zena & Brian.

Roger & Don set a high standard winning their first two games and had their noses infront by just apoint in the final round when it was decided that the warmth of the bar, superb buffet andrefreshments were more of a friendly than the unceasing rain. Ann had paired up with Phil to makeNutbrook's fifth team - a two club combination which steamed through the competition without losinga game. The final tally gave the visitors a win by 7 games to 5.

Thanks to all who turned out despite the bad weather and to those travelling from afar - to Ann fororganising the whole evening and also to Steve and his bar staff for providing the well received food& drink.

Leslie Nunn Trophy

Easter Triples Competition 2010

Monday 5th April 2010

MATCH REPORT

Our annual Easter Monday Open Triples competitionattracted attention from far & wide. Teams travellingnorth on the M1, south on the A1, east fromDerbyshire and west from Lincolnshire converged withlocal teams to do battle for trophies and prizes at the“Air Hostess”.

Such was the response to our openinvitation this year, that despite havingcreated greater capacity with our newlyregraded pistes,we were unfortunatelyunable to accommodate all those teamswishing to take part having been fullysubscribed well before the closing date forentries.

In cool blustery but dry conditions thecompetition got underway with the ‘RedCaps’ from Kegworth storming to a 13-0 firstround victory. In contrast, ‘The Fiddlers’

from Doncaster were locked in a tremendous tussle with ‘The Ends P.C’ from Stevenage, theYorkshiremen eventually losing out 11-13 to the Hertfordshire team. Despite this setback, ‘TheFiddlers’ struck back winning their 4 remaining games, dropping only 14 points in the process.

Our ‘Gee Whiz’ team struggled to adapt to their club’s new playing surface eventually findingform only in the last round. The ‘Tomb Raiders’ from Nutbrook looked a force to be reckoned with, winning four games in a row but were halted in their final game by the eventual competitionwinners.

‘The Odd Ones’ from Bourne were consistent, losing only to the Air Hostess team ‘Sunchasers’who were similarly strong on their own club’spiste conceding only 18 points throughoutthe whole competition.

The ‘Lincoln Branleys 1’ team took 2games to the ultimate nail-biting finishesbeating our AHPC’s ‘MacThompsons’ 13-12in the first round then having the tablesreversed in the fifth losing 12-13 to AHPC’sKevin Richard & Steve .

Another in-form team was that of ourRob, John & Will coming back from 5-12down against Killarney’s ‘Flyers’ in round

2, only to falter in the 3rd. round versus ‘TheOdd Lot’ also from Killarney.

At the end of a great day’s competition, 6 teams had accumulated 4 wins :

‘The Odd Ones’ from Killarney; ‘The Fiddlers’ from Doncaster; ‘Killarney Plus One’;

‘Tomb Raiders’ from Nutbrook; ‘Sunchasers’ and ‘Rob, John & Will’ from Air Hostess.

‘The Fiddlers’ won the day on points with the runners-up spot going to ‘Rob, John & Will’ and‘Killarney Plus One’ third. The AHPC chairman Peter presented the Easter Triples Shield withindividual trophies and prizes to the winners, also prizes to the runners-up and third placed teams.

Grateful thanks mustgo to many members ofthe club for the hard workput in preparing thepistes, also to the AirHostess pub staff forproviding meals andrefreshment throughoutthe day. Appreciation toofor the organisers Peter,Ann & Mike and alsoMalcolm for the trophies.

Thanks also to theparticipants whocollectively made it agreat competition enjoyedby all. We look forward towelcoming everyone back

Easter Triples Competition 2009

EASTER MONDAY PÉTANQUETRIPLES COMPETITION

13th April 2009

MATCH REPORT

The Air Hostess Pub welcomed a fullhouse of 54 players in 18 teams for theannual Easter Monday competition.

The sun shone, the boules rolled andeveryone had a good time. The bar wasopen all day with free coffees from10.30am.

This was the first competition of the2009 season for most of the playersand many old friendships wererenewed. The standard of play beliedthe lack of practice and many matcheswere keenly fought on the interestingand occasionally cursed sloping pistes.

After the last boule was thrown, the league table reflected the closeresults with four teams on four winsfrom 5 games. The final placings weredecided on points difference and thehome triple of Osman, Peter & Davidpipped the runners up of Robbie, Ian &Derek from the Red Lion by the

narrowest of margins.

Third & fourth positions again very close - an all Nutbrook affair with big Dave's "2+1"team just ahead of Steve's "Cevoc" by a couple of points.

Mike presented the Easter Competition Shield and individual trophies to the successfulhome team along with cash prizes and wine to each of the winners & runners up.

A big thank-you to Steve and the bar stafffor keeping us all fed and wateredthroughout the warm day, with theexcellent value for money meals and wellkept beer.

AHPC - Coaching Evening

Coaching Session at "The Air Hostess"

Before the start of the new competitive season, it was decided that the club and new members in particular could

benefit from a visit by the East Midlands region's coaching team. Three years have past since the last visit of coach

Richard Pratt and youth development officer Tony Moulding. The coaching duo from the "Willow" at Thurmaston ably

assisted by Lisa Edmondson, gave up some of their spare time to come to the club on the damp and cool evening

of Monday 27th April. Many of the club's members unearthed unknown latent resources in their pointing and shooting

techniques and Dave was soon rattling the metal landing disc at eight metres with monotonous ease. For others,

removal of entrenched habits was not quite so simple with some perseverance necessary.

However, Richard, Tony and Lisa imparted confidence to the members that with regular practice incorporating the

coaching advice given, they can excel on any type of terrain.

The club wishes to thank the EMPA coaches for their input into a very interesting evening on the piste and a

donation towards helping the junior coaching within our East Midlands region has been made by the club.

Club Pairs Competition 2009

The annual Air Hostess Petanque Club's Pairscompetition is now "The Munro Challenge Trophy".The trophy was renamed in 2007 in honour of our longestserving member, Ian Munro, who has moved on to newpastures and whose name appears most frequently on theoriginal Pair's Cup

This year's competition was held under floodlights on the mildautumn evening of Monday 5th. October with twenty four clubmembers taking part. Each pair played 3 games on a league format and the consistent high qualityof all the players was reflected in no one pair of the twelve winning all their games and no teamlosing all their games. At the end there were 5 teams tied on 2 wins so the result was decided onpoints difference.

The results were- Wins Pts. Diff.

Zena and Stephen 1 -14

Malcolm and Richard 1 -8

David and Ann 1 -6

So congratulations to the winners Mike and Peter, and the runners up Sue and Chris.

Following the competition all retired to the bar for relaxation. Once again Malcolm had made somefine individual trophies which were presented by Ann, together with wines and the MunroChallenge Cup for the winners and chocolates for the runners up.

Ann and Ian had spent the whole day cleaning up the piste and they also organised the prizes, thesigning in and the draw for partners, so many thanks to them from all the participants.

Match Report - Semi-final Air Hostess 5 ..... 3 - 1 ..... Plough T/Acre

The full moon rose in a clear sky over an initially crowded piste at Normanton's Plough Inn on thecool evening of Thursday 3rd.September. Air Hostess 5 pairings of Rob & Malcolm and Mike &Peter took on the Plough at Thorpe Acre's pairings of Mike Webb & John A. and Dave with JohnEdmundson. Little between these teams during the League season both finishing on top of theDivision One table with equal number of games won but the Plough shading it on a points differencecount back.

All set for a bit of a tussle then... but not really, Dave & John winning their first game against Mike &Peter at a bit of a canter 13-2 whereas Rob & Malcolm turned the tables on the other side of thepiste winning 13-3 against Mike Webb & John.

Égalité at the half way stage. Having won the toss, the Plough had elected to be the "away" teamand consequently had the advantage of choosing to stay on the same pistes for the secondencounter.

Undeterred by the change of piste and buoyed up by their initial success, Rob & Malcolm continuedin the same vein for Air Hostess 5, the soft piste favouring Malcolm's pointing style. Anythingthreatening in the head was immediately dispatched by Rob including the cochonette on numerousoccasions. Dave and John found it difficult to stay in touch and the Air Hostess pair ran out winners13-2.

Meanwhile on the other side, a monumental tussle was in progress. All the points were hard foughtand singly accrued. At 8-6 in Peter & Mike's favour, the other players (having completed) gatheredto watch the ensueing battle. This seemed to work in favour of the Plough and they pulled a pointback at the next two ends to draw level. It looked as though they were in for a couple more at thenext end but Mike Webb's boule dragged the coche towards Air Hostess 5's two backboules....10-8. Some great long range pointing by Mike W. over the next few ends and with Peter's

firing boule disappearing toward the Melton Road, the Plough crept infront at 12-11. Mike Webb andJohn again put pressure on with some great long pointing, but this time Peter's shooting under real'game on the ground' pressure paid off and after a measuring session on the second boule, thegame belonged to the Air Hostess 13-12.

This clinched the tie, the Air Hostess 5 team winning 3-1 and a place in next week's final againstRed Lion Tree or Nutbrook 1. Well done guys!

***************************************

Match Report Round 1:- Air Hostess 5 v Air Hostess 3 (4 - 0)

The AH5 team pairings of Malcolm & Andrew and Will & John proved too strong for AH3 and theDivision One leaders ran out comfortable winners 4-0 on a warm balmy evening. The dry terrainmade the piste unpredictable giving some uncharacteristic direction deviations to which Jules andMike seemed quick to adapt in the early stages. Some accurate pointing by the AH5 pair hauledthem infront and a couple of ends reaping 4 boules apiece sealed the game for AH5. This wasuncannily mirrored in the other game with Will & John against Ann & Ian. The score on one pistewas reflected moments later on the other, with the AH3 pair finishing on the wrong side of a 13-4scoreline.

The second games pitched Ann & Ian against Andrew & Malcolm, the latter pair getting a greatadvantage with a maximum on the first end and not really looking back after that. An unfortunatefinal boule ricochet from AH3 sent the cochonnet into the carpark with AH5 holding 4 unplayedboules. A stoic stance at the next end nearly put AH3 on the scoreboard but Andrew sealed thegame with some excellent pointing. The final game was not so straight forward with Jules & Mikematching Will & John point for point on the first half of the scoreboard. Then aggressive tactics byJohn & Will paid off and put some difference between the scoreboard pegs and the AH5 pair ran outwinners 13-6

Match Report Round 1 :- Plough B v Air Hostess 6 (2-3 aet)

An ideal evening for a Petanque match; dry, warm and with a slight breeze. The Plough's gardenwas busy with eaters and drinkers, adding to the sense of occasion.

The night saw AH6 pairings of Richard & Kevin alongside David & Dennis take on the Plough Bteam fronted by their club captain Norman. Kevin and Richard took their first game 13-5 inconvincing style, whilst Dennis and David conceded by the same amount, so all square after the firstgames.

Round 2, this time David and Dennis comfortably won their game 13-4, by which time Richard andKevin were 7-7 and needing a win to clinch the match. However rattling the hidden manhole coverdid little to improve their accuracy. Norman's shooting and his partner Dave's pointing were a goodcombination. The piste was starting roughen up, introducing a random element that the Ploughseemed to benefit from, or maybe they could read their piste a little better. After a lengthy game thePlough pulled out a 13-11 win, levelling the match 2-2.

Norman and his erstwhile partner Dave had won both their games, so inevitably they would go intothe play off. AH6 captain Richard chose Kevin and himself to face them, having already nearlybeaten them.

But first the food was served indoors.

Returning outside and assisted by floodlights now, the play off was to be played over the full piste. After two ends AH6 were 7-0 down. Slowly the AH6 adjusted their play and point by point started toclose the gap to 9-4, then after a few more ends levelled it at 11-11. The next end saw AH6 holdingone, the Plough with their last boule managed to nudge a second AH6 boule into a scoring positiongiving AH6 a hard fought 13-11 victory.

EASTER MONDAY PÉTANQUE TRIPLES COMPETITION

24th March 2008

The Air Hostess Pétanque Club welcomed 16 teams from asfar afield as Leeds to this annual competition. The pistesand surrounds looked good with Mark's new table & parasolcombinations.

Despite the cold weather with the odd snow flurry, play wasto the usual high standard with a league system givingeveryone 5 games.

All the games were played in a good spirit and, withrefreshments freely available from the bar, the competitionwas a perfect opener to the new season.

The team of Osman, Rob and Peter, playing on home soil, emerged as clear winners with 5 wins out of 5, taking homeindividual trophies, cash and fine wine. They also get thecompetition shield to keep for a year.

The runners-up spot was more closely contested with threeteams having 4 wins each. Points difference favoured the"APD" team - Andy Pat & Dave, who narrowly edged another

home team, namely "Where's Den", into 3rd place. Kevin's "Moustachians" team brought up the rearwith a win tally of absolute zero, having been only one point away from avoiding this fate in the veryfirst game. They each went home with a chocolate Easter egg and the resolve to do some morepractice before next year!

Our appreciation is shown to all those who prepared thepistes to an excellent standard following the winter period, also to Malcolm for the trophies and redesigned competitionshield which ensures continuation of the event for at least acouple of decades. Thanks must go to Charlotte and thestaff of the hostelry for keeping everyone supplied with foodand drink over a long cold but enjoyable day.

Above allthanks toPeter for his huge input in organising the wholeevent and we look forward to welcoming everyoneback again next Easter if not before.

Anyone wanting to have a casual game is verywelcome to come to our club evenings on

2007 Season

AIR HOSTESS have E.P.A. Champion of Champions

A pairing from the Air Hostess have won the English PetanqueAssociation's "Champion of Champions" title for 2007

Osman and Peter went to the competition held at Ickleford in Hertfordshire on29th September 2007. They had been chosen as one of two pairs to representthe East Midlands after doing well at the Regional Championships.

The competition was organised into two pools of 7 containing the best teamsfrom regions all over the country. Our team had 4 wins out of 5 in the pool stage and so progressedto the semi-finals.

Here we convincingly beat the fancied West Midlands pair to set up a final against the North ofEngland. Again Osman and Peter were considered the underdogs as the North pair had played forEngland at international level.

However steady pointing and electric shooting gave our pair a resounding 13-1 win.

Congratulations to our team and we look forward to more Air Hostess success next season.

AIR HOSTESS FLYING HIGH IN 'GOLDEN BOULE' COMPETITION

The team from the Air Hostess, Osman and Peter travelled to theBritish Sugar 'Golden Boule' pairs competition at Bury St Edmunds on2nd September 2007. The competition format was a 6-game leagueamong 15 teams from all over the east of England.

Osman's excellent shooting took our team to 5 good wins with one close defeat 12-13. Fortunatelyno other team had more than 5 wins and Air Hostess won on points difference.

We now have another trophy to go behind the bar and also prizes for the players concerned.

Air Hostess Success at Lincoln

2007 Season

AIR HOSTESS SUCCESS AT LINCOLN - 2007

The Air Hostess doubles team of Osman and Peter took on the cream of the East Midlands playersat the Regional Pairs event. It was held at the Nightingale, Lincoln (scene of an Air Hostess triumphlast year in the Stimpson Trophy) on a red hot 5th of August 2007.

Our team raced through the first four games accumulating wins and a good points difference. Thisbecame crucial in the choice for the semi-finals which was made after 5 games. In the firstsemi-final, Osman and Peter faced the pairing of international players Stone and Joe Sheffield, Joebeing the national shooting champion. Fortunately for us Stone was not on form, consequently Joe'sshooting skills could not be used to greatest advantage and we were through to the final. In the finalthe Air Hostess pair faced Cam and Roy. Sadly Peter ran out of steam and we lost a game we couldeasily have won.

However second place gained Osman and Peter selection in a four man team to represent the EastMidlands at the National Championships to be held in Luton in September.

Congratulations all round as this will be the first time that the Air Hostess Petanque Club hascompeted at National level.

2007 Season

This is a summary of results from the Knock-out Cup 2007

Round 1 - 15th June - Air Hostess 3...2-2...Plough A, Plough A go through on points difference. (AH5 & AH6...byes)

Round 2 - 19th July - Sawley Chandlery....3 - 2 .... Air Hostess 5

Cap & Stocking.......1 - 3.....Air Hostess 6

2nd Round Cup reports:-

Sawley Chandlery had to tack their way into the quarter-finals of the Cup with a close foughtencounter with our Air Hostess 5 team. Our Rob & Mike struggled to get wind in their sails on therough & unfamiliar marina carpark piste, Graham & Michael running free to win the first leg. However, it was all even at the half way stage with Will & Malcolm having eventually steamed aheadof Marie & Simon.

There was a reversal of fortunes in the second period with Rob & Mike finding their sealegs winning13-5, but Will & Malcolm found themselves in deep water against Graham & Michael losing to asimilar score.

With a 2-2 scoreline. Malcolm decided to take Rob on board to play the decider. Sawley set theirsails well and built up an early lead. Once AH5 managed to recover control of the cochonette, theplay veered through 90 degrees to run across the slope and they began to haul in the home team.Having eased in front fortunes changes again and AH5 found themselves playing up & down theslope with the lead disappearing. Late into the evening with the score at 9-12 in favour of the hometeam, AH5 were finally sunk by a long distance point from Graham close to the coche which eludedall attempts from both Rob & Malcolm to be removed.

Quarter Final - 26th September - Red Lion Tree..... 3-1 .....Air Hostess 6

more predictable andtrue than found onprevious visits, thegame was evenlymatched. Howeverwith the score at 8-7the home teamproduced some goodgrouping in the lasttwo ends to securethe required 5 points. The other pairing ofRichard & Kevin were playing the Red Lion Tree's two "D''s" Derek and Darren. They were off to agood start with 4 points secured after the first end. Good pointing by Richard and excellent firing byKevin stretched the lead to 8-2. Dispite a resurgence by the home team in the middle stages,Richard & Kevin were never in any trouble winning 13-5.A halfway stage then of one game apiece and all to play for with conditions getting colder by theminute. This obviously did not suit our team and both our pairs began to struggle against theopposition. Some determined pointing by Dennis was to no avail against Derek & Darren, when withthe score at 8-4, Darren spotted an opportunity in the head. Derek duly obliged with an excellentcarreau to take the game 13-4.

Richard & Kevinplaying in theirsecond game wereunable to find theirprevious excellentform. Theexperienced pair ofRobbie & Reg werenot found wanting ontheir new piste andwith good pointing &shooting ran outwinners 13-3.Congratulations go toRed Lion Tree teamon a 3-1 win, a gamethat was played ingood spirit with plentyfriendly banter !

(Red Lion Tree later progressed through to the final against Nutbrook 1. This match was hosted bythe Air Hostess Club on the evening of 11th October. On well prepared pistes the Red Lion Treeclaimed the trophy by beating Nutbrook 3-1 in front of a good crowd including many Air Hostessclub members.)

Club Pairs Competition 2007

2007 Season

The annual Air Hostess Petanque Club's Pairs competition willnow be fought for "The Munro Challenge Trophy".

The trophy has been renamed after our longest servingmember, Ian Munro, who has moved on to new pastures and whosename appears most frequently on the original Pair's Cup

THE MUNRO CHALLENGE TROPHY 2007

The cool but dry evening of Monday 1st October brought about the end of season Club PairsCompetition for the newly named "Munro Trophy". A good turn out of members gave us 8 pairs usingan "à la mêlée" selection. There were some large points differences in many of the games, but allteams managed to get at least one win under their belts and no wooden spoon was needed.

The games were scheduled to run for 30 minutes each, but it appeared to be only a coincidencethat the boule of the timekeeper's team was usually nearest the coche when the time-up bell rang ! At the end of the scheduled play, no teams had won all four of their games and only one team hadthree wins. Kevin amd Malcolm, both of whose names already appear on the cup during the last twoyears, this time emerged together as Pairs Champions for 2007 with three wins and one tied game.Peter and Richard claimed the runners-up spot with John and Ann taking bronze.

Being club chairman, the recently crowned E.P.A pairs "Champion of Champions" Peter presentedthe "Munro Cup" and individual trophies to the winning team along with celebratory bottles ofvariable vintage for those running close behind. The end of the season event was enjoyed by alland thanks must go once again to Peter and Mike for organising and running the event, with specialthanks to all the pub staff for putting on a well received buffet.

Club Championship 2006

The annual Air Hostess Petanque Club's Pairs competition was held on Monday 11th.September. An excellent turnout of members ensured a full evening's programme took place withthe "à la melée" selection producing 10 teams.A time limit of 25 minutes per game allowed each team four games. The rain threatened withthunder and a spectacular lightning show but kept it's distance towards the western horizonthroughout the warm evening. At the end of play there were 4 teams with an equal number of wins.Once these had been separated by points difference, Will & Malcolm emerged as the winners withJules & Kevin in second place three points ahead of third placed Rob & Peter.

Thanks to our chairman Peter who apart from presenting the Winners Cup, trophies and prizes, hadorganised the whole event. Thanks also to Karen and the pub staff for providing an excellent buffetcapping off a thoroughly entertaining evening.

Air Hostess 5 v Nutbrook 1 1-3

Semi-Final report.

Air Hostess 5 avenge last year's defeat against 'Plough' T/Acre team to secure place in this year'sfinal.

Some accurate pointing by Malcolm and blitz shooting by Will put the 'Plough's' Dave & John underpressure in a close fought game on the top sloping piste. With 10 points on the board but the Ploughholding shot, Will blasted the shot boule taking the coche well clear of the head allowing Malcolmthe easy task of securing the game 13-8 with his two remaining boules.

On the lower piste our Rob & Osman had a good start pointing well and taking all 6 points on thefirst end against Mike & Richard. Some stubborn resistance by the opposing team when 12 pointsadrift put them on the scoresheet before finally succumbing 13-1.

Being 2-0 up at the halfway stage with a place in the final in sight, Will & Malcolm never looked inany danger against Richard & Mike. With Will again clearing out the opposing boules from the head,Malcolm was once more left with plenty of room to point in to secure victory 13-2 ensuring a returnto the final for the 2nd. year running.

John & Dave came from behind to snatch a consolation point in the remaining game against Osman& Rob with some outstanding firing from both John and Osman in an intriguing contest, the Ploughtaking it 13-10.

Victorious Air Hostess 5 team [Will, Malcolm (capt.), Osman & Rob]ensure trophy retention - another one on it's way towards the Air Hostess bar!

Knock-out Cup Final report

Our Rob & John had a difficult game against Nutbrook's in form pairing of Roger & Phil and goodpointing was an overriding feature of this encounter. With some very tight heads indeed, the finalscore of 13-2 in Nutbrook's favour hardly did justice to the A.H. pair.

The other match however was full of intrigue right from the very beginning as Barry lost the tosswhen Malcolm's coin landed "tails up". Malcolm, playing without his specs, casually checked thecoin's other side only to find that was 'tails' as well ! His recent trip to the far east had come uptrumps with his 10p coin being stamped "50 cents - Singapore". After a rueful smile he offeredNutbrook a re-toss with the replacement still landing in his favour.

This was the beginning of an epic game of lasting at least one and threequarter hours. The headless50 cents hadn't really smiled upon Malcolm and Peter who after an hour found themselves 5-12down to Barry & Annie. However dogged pointing by Malcolm and risk taking shooting by Peterpulled the pair back to 10-12. At next end there was more than a glimmer of hope as Annie & Barryhad failed to dislodge AH5's shot boule and with Peter's penultimate boule rolling into the head we

were all willing his last boule on to victory - but it wasn't top be, 12-12. The final end at last,Nutbrook's nerve held and with on target shooting and pointing by the Nutbrook pair, victory wastheirs 13-12.

A well rested Rob & John then took on Annie & Barry, the latter pair making a good start getting 5points on the board fairly quickly. Once the coche had been wrested away from Annie, the endsincreased from 7metres to near maximum. Now, from behind, the AH5 pair steamed ahead withAnnie's pointing being snuffed out by some accurate firing by both John & Rob who ran out winners13-7

Malcolm & Peter again found themselves 5-12 down, this time against Phil & Roger, mainly due toPhil's consistently accurate shooting. Another long battle seemed on the cards as the AH5 pairstarted pegging points back. It wasn't until the bell rang for "last orders please" that the Cup went toNutbrook winning the game 13-7.

A good turn out of support from both Nutbrook and Tollerton enjoyed a cup match full of tension butplayed in good spirit,

Congratulations go to the Nutbrook - a great game with little to choose between the teams - asreflected in the final league placings, both on the same number of game wins, with Air Hostess 5 justshading 3rd place by a slightly superior points difference.

Easter Triples Competition 2006

A cool showery Easter Monday turn into a very successful day ofpetanque with a full house of 18 teams, each enjoying 5 games toproduce a clear overall winner. The "3 I's" or "3 EYES" (which everway you look at it), comprising Dave, Ian and Tom (10) went homewith the shield, coveted individual trophies, bottles of vintage wineand £10 each.

Behind them, four teams finished with 4 winsout of five, separated only by points difference with Nutbrook 1 and Killarney3 sharing the prizes - £5 and a bottle of wine or preserves to each player. The other teams coming from Lincs, Leics, Yorks, Rutland, Derbys, Nottsand even London all vowed to return next year to enjoy the friendly yetcompetitive atmosphere. Karen provided free coffees with her usualselection of good food and fine ales, other club members busyingthemselves with all the organisation. Thanks to all involved, especially Peterwho conducted proceedings.

The pistes looked perfect and we were ableto get off to a prompt start at 11.00. Despite a short stop for a showerof rain in the morning, play continued and several games containeddramatic reversals of fortune with close finishes leading to verynarrow margins between all the teams scores at the end of thecompetition.

The raffle was also well supported tothe benefit of club funds. This will hopefully enable the upgrading ofthe piste floodlighting ready for the league games starting in May.
