SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER READING 383 Suggestions for Further Reading As has been evident throughout this collection, Gordon N. Ray's two-volume biography Thackeray: The Uses of Adversity 1811-1846 (Oxford, 1955) and Thackeray: The Age of Wisdom 1847-1863 (Oxford, 1958), and his four-volume Letters and Private Papers of W. M. Thackeray (Oxford, 1945-6), are indispensable. The biography is incomparably better in- formed and more sophisticated in understanding than any of its predecessors. Many letters came to light after the 1945-6 publication, and a further volume is expected. Ray's The Buried Life: A Study of the Relation between Thackeray's Fiction and his Personal History (Oxford, 1952) has much about the originals of his characters, a topic earlier explored, from less complete knowledge, in John Wendell Dodd's Thackeray: A Critical Portrait (New York, 1941). The processes of his art, more at the level of craftsmanship, are discussed in J. A. Sutherland's Thackeray at Work (London, 1974). Anne Thackeray Ritchie was a scatterbrain and inaccurate, besides inevitably being an emotionally involved and protec- tive commentator upon her father. Her various recollections of him nevertheless deserve reading in extenso (see above, I, 79). Other early biographical studies are unsatisfactory, but contain useful original material: the Merivale-Marzials bi- ography (see II, 34 7) and the two-volume Life by 'Lewis Melville (Lewis Benjamin) published in 1899 and rewritten in 1909. James Grant Wilson's huge compilation Thackeray in the United States (2 vols, London, 1904) is a splendid quarry. An earlier compilation, Thackerayana: Notes and Anecdotes, ed. Joseph Grego (London, 1875; rev. 1901; repr. New York, 1971) contains much miscellaneous material. Later biographies which, though falling short of Ray's in scholarship, remain useful are Malcolm Elwin's Thackeray: A Personality (London, 1932) and Lionel Stevenson's The Showman of Vanity Fair (London, 1947). Suggestions for Further Reading

As has been evident throughout this collection, Gordon N. The biography is incomparably better informed and more sophisticated in understanding than any of its predecessors.

Anne Thackeray Ritchie was a scatterbrain and inaccurate, besides inevitably being an emotionally involved and protective commentator upon her father. Her various recollections of him nevertheless deserve reading in extenso (see above, I,

79). Other early biographical studies are unsatisfactory, but contain useful original material: the Merivale-Marzials biography (see II, 34 7) and the two-volume Life by 'Lewis Melville (Lewis Benjamin) published in 1899 and rewritten in 1909. J. Y. T. Greig's Thackeray: A Reconsideration

384 SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER READING

(Oxford, 1950) offers a sharply critical view of the man and his work. His early career is surveyed in Harold S. Gulliver's Thackeray's Literary Apprenticeship (Valdosta, 1934). E. Beresford Chancellor's The London of Thackeray (London, 1923) is a useful and well-illustrated companion to the novels. His illustrations to his own works are reproduced and discussed in John Buchanan-Brown's The Illustrations of W. M. Thackeray (London, 1979). An ingenious 'autobiography' has been compiled and created from Thackeray's letters and other writings by Margaret Forster in William Makepeace Thackeray: Memoirs of a Victorian Gentleman (London, 1978).

Critical discussion of the novels is not the task of this book, but a few studies might briefly be mentioned. His early reception is recorded in Dudley Flamm's Thackeray's Critics: An Annotated Bibliography of British and American Criticism 1836-1901 (Oxford, 1967) and illustrated in Thackeray: The Critical Heritage, ed. Geoffrey Tillotson and Donald Hawes (London, 1968). 'Twentieth-century views' of his work are exemplified in Thackeray: A Collection of Critical Essays (Englewood Cliffs, N. ]., 1968), and listed in John Charles Olmsted's Thackeray and his Twentieth-century Critics: An Annotated Bibliography, 1900-197 5 (New York, 1979). Major critical books on Thackeray include Geoffrey Tillotson's Thackeray, the Novelist (Cambridge, 1954),John Loofbourow's Thackeray and Form of Fiction (Oxford, 1964), Juliet McMaster's Thackeray: The Major Novels (Manchester, 1971), Barbara Hardy's Exposure a[ Luxury: Radical Themes in Thackeray (London, 1972), and John Carey's Thackeray: Prodigal Genius (London, 1977).

Further guidance may be found in the chapters by, respectively, Arthur Pollard, Lionel Stevenson and Robert A. Colby in The English Novel: Select Bibliographical Guides, ed. A. E. Dyson (Oxford, 1974); Victorian Fiction: A Guide to Research, ed. Lionel Stevenson (New York: Modern Languages Association, 1964); and Victorian Fiction: A Second Guide to Research, ed. George H. Ford (New York: Modern Languages Association, 1978). Lionel Stevenson also provides the bibliographical listing of Thackeray's works and commentators in The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature, Vol. 3, ed. George Watson (Cambridge, 1969).
