Message From The General Manager

By Rick Kelso, General Manager

With all the rain we've had (for the month of June, Citrus County had four times the average amount it received last year), it has

been almost impossible to conduct normal golf course maintenance. But we are doing

what we can. Weed control has been applied, and we expect those perpetual irritants will soon begin to die off and continue to do so for the next couple of months.

Applications for nematode control have also been delayed because of all the rain. We have it on the schedule, and if we can get a couple of dry days, will get that project completed. We expect to see results about a month after the application.

Overall, Tim and the maintenance staff have done a great job keeping the courses as good as they are, given all the interference from Mother Nature, as well as the challenges of dealing with an aging infrastructure and trying to stretch scarce resources in a market of ever-rising costs.

But even with all the rain, we're still thinking positive, and we have some fun events on the schedule. The Labor Day Event Golf Event will be held Sunday, September 2. We will be sending an email with further information on this special event to everyone on our email distribution list. (A reminder, if you are not receiving our emails, contact Jordan Le Meur, membership director, and he will add your name to the list.) Also, we will be posting sign-up sheets for this event in hallway at Southern Woods and the Golf Shop at Sugarmill Woods..

Another fun event is a couples' nine-hole game held the on the second and fourth Friday afternoons. Called Hit and Giggle, each member of the team tees off; they choose the best ball and from that point on hit alternate shots throughout the entire round. Each team must make points based on their handicaps. Afterward, most everyone goes into the club for dinner and continued camaraderie. Many thanks to Susie Hornbeck and Nan Roys, who run this event. Thus far, they have grown it to more than 40 players. Anyone interested in joining can contact Susie at [email protected] or Nan at [email protected].

On the first and third Sundays, starting at 10:30 a.m., there is a fun couple's event called Sunday Swingers. In this nine-hole game, both members of the team consisting of one man and one woman tees off on every hole. They then select the best drive, and play alternate shots from there until the ball is holed or conceded. Afterward, most players go into the club for brunch. Special thanks to John Lehman, who runs this game, which he initiated just a few months ago. It, too, is a very popular event that gives members another opportunity to get together, have fun, and socialize. Members interested in joining this group should go to http://play.sundayswingersgolf.com.

And, again, I want to thank all the heads of the various golf groups, as well as others who help the clubs in so many ways. It all takes time and effort, and I can't imagine where we would be today without all that generous support.

Robin and her staff have lots of good things in store for August. Taste of the World and Lobster Night are two “extras” for next month. Be sure and check Robin's article and the calendar for dates and times. Also, because the restaurants have been very busy, be sure and make your reservations as far in advance as possible.

Overall, the clubs are still struggling, but we have had a few successes. The membership referral program has brought in over 125 new members since last August. We plan to continue the program through April of 2019.

Unfortunately, we have also lost many members, for various reasons: just not as active as in prior years, poor health, financial, etc. So please keep the club's incentive program and the many positives of being members in mind when talking to friends and neighbors. Your help in growing the membership roster will benefit not only the clubs, but everyone in the community, as well. A golf club in a residential area is well documented to increase property values; conversely, a closed course will cause significant declines in property values and resale opportunities.

The more members we have, the more I will be able to do to make the clubs better. Thank you for your support and belief in the Sugarmill Woods and Southern Woods clubs and the Oak Village Fitness Center.

By Ed Burfeindt, Head PGA Professional

The two governing bodies of golf, the R&A and USGA, recently released some proposed rule changes that are set

to take effect January 1, 2019. This month I will be discussing five of the more

important proposed changes.

The first rule that we will discuss is a situation that takes place in a water hazard. The proposed change here is to allow the player to move loose impediments in the penalty area. You will also be allowed to ground your club in the hazard as well without a penalty. The current penalty for grounding your club is loss of the hole in Match Play or a two-shot penalty in Stroke Play.

The next sug-gested rule change has to do with putting on the green with the flagstick in the hole. It will allow a player's ball to hit the flagstick without incurring a penalty. Right now, if a player's ball strikes the flagstick in the hole, there is a loss of the hole in Match Play and a two stroke penalty in Stroke Play and the ball must be played as it lies.

The third rule that has been mentioned for a proposed change is how to drop a ball. The existing rule says that a player must drop their ball from shoulder height and an arm's

length away from their body. The new rule would allow the player to drop the ball from any height, as long as it falls through the air when dropped and doesn't touch anything.

The fourth rule we will talk about is one that I think should have been changed a long time ago, and that is the repairing of spike marks on the green. Under the current rule, you are allowed to fix ball marks made on the green but not spike marks made by shoes. So if you find yourself playing behind someone who can't walk properly and drags their feet, you have to putt through the raised marks they have left behind.

The last proposed rule change makes the most sense considering one of the biggest complaints about a round of golf is how long it takes to play, and the pace of play. The proposed rule change would allow a player to search for a ba l l f o r t h r ee minutes maximum as opposed to the current allotted t i m e o f f i v e minutes. It doesn't seem like that big a change, but if you c o n s i d e r h o w many times a ball might be lost and the amount of players on the course; it adds up.

If you need help with any part of your game, send me an email to [email protected] or call (352) 382-1200 to set up a lesson. I look forward to seeing you next month on The Practice Tee.

Message FromGolf Maintenance

By Tim Gatz, Director of Golf Maintenance

Here is the golf maintenance schedule for Sugarmill Woods and Southern Woods for the month of August.

At Sugarmill Woods, Pine and Cypress courses will be closed on August 6th and 7th. This

course closure is for our last core aerification on greens for this year. This maintenance practice is done in early August so that the greens have enough time to heal prior to over seeding. During the last part of the month all greens will be verticut and lightly topdressed to create a smoother putting surface. This will be repeated a few times over the next few weeks. Over the next few weeks, a few spray applications will be done on greens in order to reduce goosegrass activity. The final item we have planned for this month is pre-emerging all fairways, tees and roughs to limit weed seed germination.

At Southern Woods, our last core aerification on greens is scheduled for August 20th and 21st. At this time the course will be closed for these two days so the maintenance staff can properly complete this practice. In the weeks following this aerification our focus will be on creating a smoother putting surface through verticutting and topdressing. Each time we perform this practice we reduce grain and promote a healthier growing environment. By the end of August, a majority of our aerification practices will be completed.

Please remember to do all of the little things to keep our course in good condition. This includes filling divots, raking bunkers, repairing ball marks and obeying cart signs and control ropes

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer, wherever you are. Come on in

for some cooling beverages and tasty meal. Personally, I'm looking forward to the

fall, partly for the cooler weather but mostly for the return of our winter members – we really miss you in the dining room!

Wednesday, August 8th brings our third annual “Taste Around the World.” For those unfamiliar with this event, it is a tapas style evening with tastings of international cuisine. It will be served from 5 pm until 7:30 at a cost of just $15.95 per person.

Game night this month will be Tuesday, August 14th. The regular weekly specials, along with the dinner menu, are Prime Rib on Thursday for $18.95 and Fish Fry on Friday for $13.95. A lunch menu will be served on Sundays from 11 am to 2:30 pm with some interesting breakfast special features. “Cocktail Cuties” meet in the lounge between 3 and 5 pm every Tuesday to sample the week's cocktail selection, come along for some fun, frivolity and fellowship.

A couple of heat-beating cocktails to enjoy around the pool:

Sangria de Casa

• Fill a goblet with ice and add:

• Large dash of brandy

• Large dash of triple sec or Cointreau

• Squeeze ½ of an orange

• Top up with red or white wine (champagne works just as well!)

• Garnish with slices of orange, lime and a cherry.

Watermelon Slushy

• 2 oz Bacardi or white rum, Roses lime juice (¼ - ½ oz to taste)

• 1 cup seedless watermelon chunks, 1 cup of ice

• OPTIONAL additions: 1 oz Peach Schnapps OR Amaretto

• Put all ingredients in blender and blend 'til smooth and slushy and garnish with any fruit you have lurking in the fridge.

• For a real kick add a float of Bacardi 151 (stay away from naked flames though!)

Traditions Day

Next month on Saturday, September 15th is Tennis Traditions on the courts at

8:30 am. This event was rescheduled into the Fall for this year. Basically it's the same

kind of format as a mixed doubles Playday. Only requirements are that you wear traditional WHITE tennis clothing and use a traditional size old wooden racquet. I have MANY wood racquets to choose from if you don't have one. The Entry fee is $2 per player. Sign up NOW because it will fill up fast!

Friday Funsters

Again, into the month of August, I'm organizing the Friday morning Mixed Doubles group “week to week” until some of the Snowbirds return. Speak up if you want to play, I will put you on the rotating schedule.

Men's USTA 40+ 4.0

The Men's 40+ 4.0 Mens USTA Team recently travelled to compete in the Fl State Sectional Championships held at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Florida.

We had two matches back to back on Saturday morning. First against Orange County. We lost 0-5 in that match. Turns out Orange County made it to the Finals and lost to Miami. Anyway, our second match Saturday was against Duval County. We played them tough, but again lost that match. They were a younger and bigger team. We only have eight players and you need ALL eight to play one match. It consists of three doubles and two singles. The other teams we faced had up to 22 players on their rosters.

The players were: Rick Scholl (Captain), Mike Brown, Jim LaVoie, Shea Monroe, Glenn Sikorcin, Donnie Simmons, Dominick Testi, and Mike Tringali.

Swimming Pools

Now that both swimming pools are open the Cypress pool is quieter for sure. Please remember at BOTH pools we do not allow any big Floats or mattresses in the pool. Needless to say our weather has been hot. RAIN - we have had our fair share, but then, tis the season. Everything is growing well including the weeds.

Keep yourself hydrated. Also, pay attention to the tropical report. We are in

that you know what season (Hur-----es).

MGA Executive Board Change

Frank Veit, 2018 Treasurer, has opted to leave the Club. We wish Frank well in his future endeavors and thank him for his participation in SMW MGA as Treasurer and Secretary.

Effective July 1st, Steve Demianczyk, President, moved Bill Nusbickel from Secretary to Treasurer and appointed John Raymond as Secretary. John agreed to be Secretary for the remainder of 2018.

SMW MGA Executive Board (July thru December 2018):

President ------- Steve Demianczyk

Treasurer ------- Bill Nusbickel

Secretary ------- John Raymond

In 2019 SMW MGA will need a Treasurer and Secretary. Your MGA is run by volunteers. If a Nominating Committee Member contacts you please consider volunteering your time for your MGA.

On-Line Sign Up

For the past few years the MGA has been using "Sign Up Genius" to sign up for golf on MGA Thursdays. Signing up on line gives each individual control whether or not you signed up for golf, the dates and gives you the opportunity to cancel - all on line. Dick Tuxbury is the Sign Up Genius administrator. If anyone has any questions or needs further information contact Dick at 382-4031 or [email protected].

MGA Hole In One

The MGA has a 'Hole In One' prize for 2018. The Board approved setting aside $100.00 to be split between all MGA players who score an ACE during an MGA sanctioned event for the calendar year. So far no one has succeeded. Sharpen up your play on the par 3's and cash in.

By Joanne Tuxbury

Welcome to our 2018-19 SMWLGA Season. Opening Day is Wednesday September 12, 2018.

Your LGA Board (President Ginger Bong, Vice President Joanne Tuxbury, Treasurer Chris Venable, Secretary Karen Hall, Parliamentarian Cathy Wright, Tournament Chairman JoAnn Ray, and Past President Susie Hornbeck) has been hard at work this past summer to set up an exciting year of golf, fun and friendship.

Emeritus Status memberships are available. An Emeritus member is a former active member who wishes to remain a member of the LGA, but can no longer play golf. You would be able to join us for lunch on the Opening Day, Christmas, and Closing Luncheons. The fee for this type of membership is $15 per year. Come out and visit with your LGA friends.

Join the SMW 18 Hole LGA and have fun with friends and neighbors each Wednesday morning from September to May. Shotgun start: 8:30 a.m. Must sign in by 8:00 a.m.

The cost is $25 per year and $2.00 per week for the prize fund. Maximum handicap is 40.4.

New members: Contact Lorraine Dayton, the Membership Chair at 352-382-0729.

We use Signup Genius (SignUpGenius.com) to register for weekly play. JoAnn Ray is the Tournament Administrator. Any questions concerning sign up, please check with JoAnn or Ginger Bong.

“When I first went to Dr. Higgins I was impressed with his willingness to listen to me and understand my lifestyle. I appreciated that he wasn't one to rush into a surgical solution. Although he did tell me that surgery was in my future, he was willing to use less invasive techniques to give me more time. Dr. Higgins periodically monitored my condition and informed me when he thought it was time to do the surgery…I am so thankful to be the recipient of the God-given knowledge, skills, talents and compassion that Dr. Higgins used to give me back my life.” – Debbie O.

The Homosassa River is a 7-mile long fresh water river that leads through an incredibly productive estuary to the Gulf of Mexico. Here the fresh water from the springs mixes with salt water from the Gulf providing a nursery for many fish and other animals. If the water is polluted or too salty, then the young and fragile fish, shrimp and crabs will not live. High quality fresh water from the springs flowing into the river is essential.

Any factor causing environmental degradation and any means to aid in restoration is appropriate for the attention of the Alliance. We are a 501c3, non-profit organization and our game plan is to provide education and information at schools, at State Parks, at festivals, thru presentations, thru brochures, thru newsletters and thru the media. We provide a forum for citizens and experts to discuss environmental issues. We work with County Commissioners and planners, with SWFWMD and with the Florida DEP to help develop and apply the best management practices.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------Meals on Wheels - Contact: Jennie O'Connor, 382-0808

The Meals on Wheels Association of America is the oldest and largest national organization composed of, and representing, local, community-based Senior Nutrition Programs in all 50 U.S. Territories. All told, there are some 5,000 local Senior Nutrition Programs in the United States. These programs provide well over one million meals to seniors who need them each day.

The Meals on Wheels Program in our area is in desperate need of volunteer distributors to help us deliver food. Most people sign up to do this once a month but many do it more often. It takes only about an hour and a half of your time and is truly appreciated by those who receive the meals and is rewarding for those who deliver them. Volunteers can be reimbursed for mileage by the county. If you are

Welcome to the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association! Want to meet others with an interest in the great game of tennis and to make friends with some wonderful people? Join the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association!

Towards this goal, the Sugarmill Woods Tennis Association (SMWTA) issues a tennis roster that includes a listing of current officers and players as well as a schedule of yearly events. By joining the Tennis Association, you are placed on the membership roster and will also receive e-mail correspondence to keep you up-to-date on other members and tennis events.

The Association also organizes several "Playdays" a year for its members, round-robin mixed doubles events, which serve to bring players together. Lunch follows, sometimes as a delightful covered-dish affair beneath the trees at Oak Village. Guests of members are welcome to play and join in the festivities. Non-playing family members are welcome to cheer on the players and join us for lunch. A portion of your dues goes towards providing Playday prizes, courtside refreshments, photos, etc.

The SMWTA also helps its members in time of need. When a member or a non-playing spouse is down and out, our Sunshine Committee is there with a card or goodies to help cheer them up.

Another primary function of the SMWTA is to provide representation to Sugarmill Woods Country Club management in matters of concern to tennis players. By joining the Association, you add your voice to those with similar tennis-related concerns.

The Tennis Association has also donated items to improve the tennis facilities. In the past, we have provided such items as the bleacher seats and shoe washers at the Sugarmill Woods tennis courts. In December of each year, a gala tennis banquet is held at the Sugarmill Woods Country Club. A portion of your dues goes towards appetizers, music, awards, photos and mementos.

By joining the Tennis Association you get all of the above benefits, plus an organization of volunteers that helps make your tennis community a better place. You also get involved with a wonderful group of people who enjoy the great game of tennis. Priceless!

To join up, place your $15.00 dues, which covers everyone in your immediate household, in the Oak Village drop box located in the shelter between Courts 2 and 3. Include your name(s), address, phone number and e-mail address. You can also give or send your dues to Treasurer Joe Lareau, 17 Nemesia Ct. E.,
