AFP files can be sent to the BENS server from an AS400 or IBM mainframe environment as well as from a PC via port 515 (for example with the LPR program).

The following BENS filter licenses are required for AFP printing :

1 x AFP Converter for AFP printing via LPR plus Maintenance 1 x AFP Speed dependend printing license plus Maintenance for each Printer

Example: AFP files should be output on 3 black and white printers with 125, 85 and 55 pages per minute. In addition to the BENS server and maintenance following licenses are required :

IPDS printing is usually performed from an AS400 or IBM mainframe environment. There are also some Windows-based programs that can issue IPDS print streams.

AFP-Printing and IPDS-Printing with one BENS ServerBENS Printserver


AFP and IPDS printing can be performed simultaneously on the same BENS print server, if appropriate licenses are available.

The following BENS filter licenses are required for AFP printing:

1 x AFP Converter for AFP printing via LPR plus Maintenance 1 x Speed dependend AFP printing license plus maintenance for each printer

AFP-Printing and IPDS-Printing with one BENS ServerBENS Printserver


AFP printing is not the same as IPDS printing. Both methods require different ports, different printing methods, and other licenses.

Each BENS Server includes a trial version for AFP and IPDS printing. The trial version prints a watermark on each sheet. In one pass max. about 500 pages can be printed. After that the converter has to be restarted manually. Attempting to print a job with more than 500 pages may result in no output at all.

As soon as only one license has been installed on the server - be it for AFP or IPDS printing - demo printing is no longer possible for any of these methods.

For AFP and IPDS color printing, different licenses are requiered whose price differs from the black and white licenses.

Color printers may not require AFP or IPDS color licenses. Only if the printout also contains color, corresponding color licenses

must be purchased, otherwise black and white licenses could be used.

The BENS hardware server is not suitable for so-called productive printing with high-performance machines. In this case, only

the performance-scalable virtual BENS server for VMWare, XEN, or Microsoft Hyper-V is eligible.

Maintenance is optional. If there is no maintenance, however, lost licenses will not be reissued.

For test purposes without limitation, time limited licenses can be ordered on request for a short test period .
