Access Simplification Optivity Telephony Manager expands coverage across the SuccessionEnterprise product portfolio while at the same time simplifying theconnectivity model. Optivity Telephony Manager can provide a singlepoint of access to other Succession Enterprise applications through a serial, Windows, or Web interface. With the popularity of the Web,some new and evolving subsystems and applications are beginningto implement Web based element management features in theirproducts. Yet the business may still have elements in their networkthat are managed through a serial interface.

The Optivity Telephony Manager architecture allows for manage-ment of devices through a management server. By using OptivityTelephony Manager as a management server, network managerscan reduce the number of access points required thus reducing thenumber of modems, analog lines, and router ports. Also, by having a single "point of entry", security can be more effectively managed.

Converging Telephony andData ManagementCompanies with PBX-based telephonynetworks look for the cost savings andefficiencies that IP-enabled infrastruc-tures can offer. However, in environ-ments containing large networks ofwidely distributed systems, most com-panies have been unable to obtain a system-level view of the network. Thishigh-level perspective is crucial formonitoring network usage, optimizingperformance, and planning for futureexpansion.

Network managers can use OptivityTelephony Manager to access PBX systems and applications over the Webfrom any browser-enabled workstation.Remote management streamlines theprocess of monitoring and managingmultiple telephony network elements.

The Telecom Billing SystemThe Telecom Billing System runs on thesame platform as Optivity TelephonyManager - either on the OptivityTelephony Manager server itself or on anetwork-installed client. Call DetailRecords (CDR) can be spooled directlyto the Optivity Telephony Managerserver to eliminate the need for externalbuffer boxes. This lowers the total costof ownership and simplifies the admin-istration of the telephony network.

Call Tracking is a call monitoring fea-ture that examines call usage patternswhich can help detect unauthorized system access. It is estimated that unauthorized system access is costingbusinesses billions of dollars every year.Protecting your telecom system fromunauthorized access by using a callmonitoring application will give youimproved visibility and control by monitoring calling patterns and notifying you of suspicious activity.

And since Call Tracking isincluded in the Telecom BillingSystem, it provides you with an additional protection layer againstunauthorized access and internal usageabuse. Call Tracking includes a graphicalreporting capability for trending and call-pattern analysis. It also providesalarm notification, which can be used to warn managers of unusual calling patterns and assist in the quick detectionof unauthorized telephone usage.Administrators can define multiplealarm templates to detect different call-ing patterns, including calls exceeding acertain duration, calls made at unusualtimes, or calls to unusual destinations.Call Tracking can also be configured toprovide real-time performance monitor-ing of incoming or outgoing calls on anindividual extension.

Analyzing System ResourcesUnderstanding system resources is crucial to maintaining and operating atelephony system. Businesses need tohave a view of traffic patterns so that ifand when expansion is necessary, theadditional resource planning will havebeen done in advance and the businesswill continue operating smoothly without interruption.

Traffic Analysis is a feature used toanalyze device resources and traffic patterns. It provides information ontrunk usage, peak periods, processorloads and loop traffic. Traffic Analysisconverts raw traffic statistics, either ondemand or on a scheduled basis, andpresents the statistics to the networkmanager in a simplified format. TrafficAnalysis also includes a “what if ” scenario that will allow administratorsto forecast expansion requirements.

Who is using the network? In today’s environment ofheightened security, it isbecoming increasingly impor-tant to know who is usingyour voice network and forwhat purpose. Whether it’smonitoring your network tohave a view of internal usageabuse or to help detectinstances of unauthorizedaccess, the Optivity TelephonyManager Telecom BillingSystem and Call Tracking appli-cations provide a solution thatcould potentially save youthousands of dollars.

The Telecom Billing System is acomprehensive call accountingand reporting application. While it is sold as an unbun-dled package, it can be usedwith any of the OptivityTelephony Manager packageoptions.
