SUCCESSFUL ESL LTD. ADVENTURES IN CANADA GUIDE 3B

The Student’s Book, ADVENTURES IN CANADA, that accompanies this Guide is written for young children, who are learning to understand, speak, read and write English as a second language.

ADVENTURES IN CANADA is Book 3B of a continuous series.

It is assumed that the children will have been introduced to the alphabet, beginning consonant sounds, medial short vowels and rhyming words and a number of consonant blends. This book reviews all of these, introduces these consonant blends: cr, fl, dr, pl, ch, sq, sk, gr, sm, wh, sn, fr, kn, ght, sl, and teaches the present progressive ending “ing”. It also introduces the names of articles of warm clothing and features a variety of activities in Canada.

A new vocabulary of about 141 words is introduced while the vocabulary taught in the previous books of this series is reviewed. Most of the story is told through narratives and role-plays that provide the children with opportunities to listen, speak, read and write. They are also encouraged to add their own ideas. Creative ideas at this age are the basis for innovative research when they are older. The dialogues present conversation as it is used by western children of the same age. The exercises in this Student’s Book, plus the activities in the Teacher’s Guide, offer the repetition needed for children learning English as a second language.

The graphics provide the essential scenario for understanding, listening and speaking. The games in this Guide add essential listening and speaking activities that build vocabulary. The crossword puzzles reinforce the vocabulary that has been introduced.

The basic teacher instructions are given in the small boxes on each page. This is efficient for the teacher and also allows the parents to understand what the child has been asked to do. For this reason, the instructions are more repetitive and detailed than would be necessary if they were for teacher use only. We suggest that the students use paper markers of about 17 centimeters long and 5 centimeters wide to help them to attend to the relevant section of the page.

PRACTICE BOOK This book provides independent work for the children. The students will need a brief explanation of what they are to do before starting the pages that accompany each lesson. Each student travels with the storybook characters and a classroom or an imaginary friend. The activities include drawing, printing, reading, puzzles and making decisions about what they will do to help solve the problems encountered in the adventure story The words needed for the puzzles and printing can be found on the same student page.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY This series is introducing English to young children as a second language within a scenario where they are learning to understand, speak, read and write. As young children view their world as a whole, rather than in parts, an integrated approach is used. The activities include grammar, phonics, listening, memorizing verses, speaking and printing. Graphics are used extensively to promote understanding, and are integrated with the speaking, reading and writing activities.

We wish you success with your classes, Daisy Stocker B.Ed. M.Ed. George Stocker D.D.S.

BOOK 3B HOW TO PLAY PICTURE BINGO

Give each student one Bingo Card. For classes with more than 10 students, two or three students can have copies of the same card. It’s best if those with identical cards are sitting apart.

The teacher calls the captions listed below in any order. The children are to mark the picture that matches the caption. For the first game they can all mark their picture with a small red X. When they have a horizontal, vertical or diagonal row of pictures with a red X in each box, they are to call BINGO. The diagonal row must go from corner to corner. The central BINGO box is free. It is important that the children be allowed to help each other or be given teacher assistance. They should all find the correct picture to match the caption that is called. Although after playing two or three games they can be encouraged to work more independently, children should still be given help where needed. The underlined words are new.

PRIZES: The winners will be delighted with a star drawn on their card or a rubberstamp picture. The same BINGO card can be used for five or six games. To do this, have them use a different colored pencil for each game. For example, they might use red, then blue, then green and so on. While playing this game, the children are highly motivated to learn by listening, understanding and associating the meaning to the picture. They are also learning basic grammar without any formal teaching.

This game will review some of the vocabulary used in the previous books of this series. Play this game to introduce to Book 3B. The children will learn quickly if they play often.
