Dear Members, Welcome to the eighth issue of Gavashni, the newsletter for our Zoroastrian community members residing in the Gulf region. Can’t believe eight years have flown by since we started this publication. Looking back, the progress made by Gavashni is amazing. We think, this publication will achieve greater success, if our readers contribute more and spark a dialogue with us.

What makes this issue special is – it is packed with interesting articles. The lead story is on Hoshedar Cooper, Partner at Ratan Mama and Co., now known as PKF Chartered Accountants. His story is a definitive proof of courage and commitment. Observing the growth of WZCCME members, their profiles have been included by us. Needless, to say that their hard work and loyalty towards their professions have enabled them to succeed in the corporate world. WZCCME’s success in this regions can be attributed solely to the support received from them. An article on the visit to the World Expo site on 31st January, 2020 by WZCCME members residing in Dubai is included. The Expo is set to attract millions of visitors and showcase Dubai as a global destination. The government expects a boost to growth spurred by stimulus programs and projects relating to the international exhibition fair, which is being held for the first time in the region.

Additionally, there are fascinating stories about the past on the eternal flame, our Avestan prayers, herbal medicines in Iran, and more… Dubai is fortunate to have Freny and Freddy Sidhwa in Dubai, who have been sponsoring the annual Gahambar for the past 25 years for our community members in the UAE. Last year the Gahambar was held on 29th November, 2019. Further, a cricket team from the Bombay Parsee Gymkhana was invited to Dubai for a friendly match which took place on 21st February, 2020, at the Ocean Fair International Cricket ground.

The Kid’s corner is filled with lovely quizzes. Try them out.

The article by Delnaaz Readymoney on Bahrain Zoroastrian Association is interesting. They are an active lot who never fail to meet up with the expectations of the community members living there.

The Iranshah Udvada Utsav from 28th to 30th December 2019 was a success. An article on this event is included. Similarly, the 6th Return to Roots (RTR) program organized by Arzan Wadia, Vice President, Fezana, USA, in February, 2020 was also successful. Testament of Courage and Commitment

Hoshedar Cooper has come a long way in his life. He is a self-made man and currently a Partner at Ratan Mama & Co., now known as PKF Chartered Accountants. His life is a definitive proof of what can be achieved through the dint of one’s hard work and self-confidence. He is an ardent follower of the Zoroastrian faith and its tenets and is well loved by the community members.

Tell us where you grew up and something about your early life. I was born in Jamnagar, India to two very loving parents who inculcated a set of values which serve me well even today when I am a parent to two lovely boys. Our economic background was modest, but there was always food on the table. This taught me virtues of how to use resources optimally. I was always encouraged to be an integral part of the community and the community in turn helped me all through my adult life, whether it be my education which was largely funded by Parsi trusts and institutions, to all my jobs which were either referred to or recommended to by Parsis.

Who helped you in making your career decision and how did your journey start?

I started as a cost accountant trainee with Ratansha Nanabhoy and Company in Bombay (where it was my pleasure to work with Mr. Nanabhoy and his son Limji Nanabhoy), moving on to Blue Star, then to Sharp & Tannan Associates where Mr. Jamshed Delvadewalla imbibed in me the quality of how to be a leader with really micromanaging every bit of subordinate’s work. Finally, my last move to Ratan Mama & Co, (now PKF), in 1992, where currently I am a Partner. Yet again a Parsi gentleman Mr. Neville Madon recommended me to the then partner Mr. Rafik, who became like a second father to me at PKF. Mr. Ratan Mama was an inspiration on how hard work and dedication is the only mantra to success.

How did your family members influence you in early life?

As I reflect back on my life and career, I recall the words of my maternal grandparents that, “the Universe looks after you if you give selflessly and without expecting anything in return.” I am a living example of that age old wisdom which has given me great satisfaction to take on roles at the Gamadia colony Parsi hostel for boys, (which was home away from home all through my education) to cleaning of Agiaries and places of worship, to participating as a volunteer in Muktaads in Dubai so generously hosted by Zarin and Percy Tantra and playing a very limited role as a committee member in Dubai.

Tell us about the people you admire the most and why?

My personal spiritual journey into enquiring about the Good Religion was encouraged and reinforced by Mr. Khojeste Mistree who through his knowledge and passion for the religion and the community inspired me. He lives the faith and has set up institutions which till today continue to help and bolster the community in a modest way. His wife Firoza ably supports him and is a scholar in her own right.

Tell us something about your family and your life in Dubai.

I met my soul mate Mahrukh at Zoroastrian Studies in Bombay. She saw potential in an impoverished and very average person of 23 years and took the risk. I hope I have lived up to her expectations. Dubai has become a home away from home over the last 28 years. I often look back in wonder as to how the ruling family with their far-sighted vision have transformed this place into a global city in which I am proud to reside.

What are you most proud of accomplishing?

I think charity begins with your family and you takeit up from there. I, therefore, keep helping family members and friends when things are not going too well with them. I also help institutions involved in promoting humanitarian causes for I believe – “No one has ever become poor by giving.”

If you had one piece of advice for youth what would that be?

Our youth should be proud of our religion and heritage. They should have more understanding of our faith which is so distinct and different and has survived the test of time. Learning more about the faith will help them to protect and preserve it.

A Trip to the World Expo Siteorganized by WZCCME

As Dubai gears up for the first international expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region there is jubilation in the air, however, there are chances that it will be postponed to next year in the wake of the current world situation caused by the corona virus.

When the gates of Expo 2020 open next year in Dubai, it will kick start a celebration unlike anything the world has ever witnessed.

Passing through the gates will be a procession of artists and academics, dancers, diplomats, pop stars, pioneering thinkers, culinary wizards, cultural icons, tech ninjas and tomorrow’s leaders - plus, of course, participating nations and millions of visitors from around the world.

To help the businessmen and professionals, WZCCME Team organized a short trip for them to see the Expo site. The Expo will be a gateway into new markets for all businesses, offering businessmen and professionals a chance to develop relationships with nations, multilateral organisations, corporations and educational institutions.

So, on a bright Friday morning of 31st January, 2020, fifty excited Parsis, with their tourist caps on and cameras in their hands, gathered at the Zabeel Park in Dubai, and boarded the colourful coach, courtesy Expo authorities.

Once on board, the tour guide, took the members on an entertaining journey of the history of the World Expos alluding how ‘Eiffel Tower,’ a wrought-iron lattice tower on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France was constructed in 1889 as part of the World’s Fair. He also mentioned that products like Cream of Wheat, Pabst Beer, Aunt Jemina syrup, Heinz Ketchup and Juicy Fruit Gum were products of the past World Fairs/Expos.

As food can never be far away from Parsis, the members enjoyed the delicious Eeda pao (egg) and chutney sandwiches and drinks courtesy WZCCME.

At the Visitors center, the members were welcomed by a group of Mexican dancers. Lip-smacking Mexican snacks were served. Thereafter they were shown a futuristic video of the site with VR Headset available for personalized viewing, and multiple sustainability models created for Expo 2020 whose theme is “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”. The expo site, will be equivalent to 600 football pitches, and powered by solar energy with beautifully structured towers.

After seeing some interesting models, the members ventured further to explore the site in the coach and passed through the ‘Expo Doors,’ a magnificent structure in itself, as well as a piece of art supported by science to reflect the maximum strength, flow of air and shadow. These doors will welcome the participating countries, each of which will have its own pavilion. There will also be a pavilion for each of the sub-themes of ‘Opportunity, Sustainability and Mobility,’ which will surround the gigantic ‘Al-Wasl’ dome – located in the heart of the Expo 2020 site. The falcon inspired UAE Pavilion will push the boundaries of eco-conscious design.

The structures and different pavilions of various countries will add splendor to the Expo which is expected to run for six months, after which the site will become a futuristic city for the residents, expatriates and multinationals.

After the exciting journey, the bus returned to the exit gate where members took some group pictures to relive the nostalgic moments of their visit to the Dubai World Expo site during its historic creation. The coach ride back to Zabeel Park was enjoyable.

The Iranshah Udvada Utsav, 2019

The third edition of the Iranshah Udvada Utsav took place at the Gymkhana grounds in Udvada from 28th December to 30th December, 2019. Udvada, as we all know, is the religious center for Parsi Zoroastrians across the globe. One thousand four hundred people attended the event which gave a festive look to the religious site. The Utsav was sponsored by Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla, founder and chairman of the Serum Institute of India and promoted by Gujarat Tourism.

Highlights of Day 1:

Vada Dasturji Khurshed Dastoor under whose watchful eye this entire event was organized welcomed the guests and the participants. He spoke about the vision and mandate of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi who wanted the Utsav to be established as a gathering for the community to participate and celebrate in. Vada Dasturji thanked Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla and his entire organizational team led by his wife Havovi Dastoor for making fantastic arrangements for the IUU.

The event was inaugurated by the Administrator of Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Shri Praful Patel.

It included ‘Gujarat ni Arsi Amhe Parsi’ a play by the legendary theater personality Yazdi Karanjia and his daughter Mahrukh Chichgar. The play wove the story of how the Parsis have become an integral part of Gujarat.

A performance by Groove Garden, the famous band comprising the most talented and famous musical personalities included India’s premium JAM Master Hormuz Ragina. The band rocked the crowd with all-time favorites including soft and classic evergreen rock music.

The IUU Souvenir, a special compilation of messages from well-wishers across India, including the President of India, Hon’ble Shri Ram Nath Kovind, was released on stage along with a special Childrens’ book by Ervad Dr. Ramiyar Karanjia, the Principal of the Dadar Athornan, the school for young Parsi Priests.

The evening function began with the address by the Vada Dasturji Khurshed Dastoor. He laid out his vision for the community in the years to come and thanked those who have been supportive of all the initiatives be it at the national government level, or at the local panchayat level. The fantastically organized Utsav was a testament to the hundreds of hours of planning that would have gone beforehand.

This was followed by a presentation and launch of the Iranshah Initiative by Arzan Sam Wadia, Vice-President of FEZANA. The Iranshah Initiative is a concept put together by global youth leader Tinaz Karbhari with collaborators from all over the world. It is a youth generated initiative for the long term sustenance of the Pak Iranshah Atash Behram.

A new book for the community members titled ‘My Golden Book on Zoroastrianism’ was launched in the evening. Edited by Meher Bhesania of Dubai, and sponsored by the World Zoroastrian Organization Trust, the book tells the story through frequently asked question and answers on community’s rich culture, heritage, its age old rituals and religious practices in a simple manner. The book has 200 question and answers on different topics relating to Zoroastrianism divided into 12 chapters. Each Chapter has been arranged with an activity page meant for coloring, learning and making personal notes. The book comes with an offering of a Compact Disc containing the right gestures for doing the ‘Kasti’ with lucid instructions and evocative music. The main purpose of launching this book is to standardize knowledge on Zoroastrianism in the community, which is spread far and wide in the world, and teachers who teach Zoroastrianism in religious classes in different regions.

The event also felicitated the Parsi achievers - India’s Holistic Health and Fitness Guru Mickey Mehta; legendary Indian athlete and now President of the Indian Olympic Association Adille Sumariwala and popular Vlogger, Sherry Shroff.

FEZANA President Homi D. Gandhi and Vice President Arzan Sam Wadia presented the funds collected by FEZANA for the upkeep of the Iranshah to Vada Dasturji Khurshed Dastur.

Football, volleyball, cricket and sepak contests saw some tough rivalries when the players were on the court but amazing camaraderie off the games.

Highlights of Day 2:

The morning of the second day was dedicated to various activities. A treasure hunt was organized by XYZ Foundation under the leadership of Hoshaang Gotla who had 30 teams compete for the top prize. Heritage walks around Udvada were organized under the guidance of Jimmy Bhiwandiwala and a cookery demonstration by Cafe Farhoar kept the participants of the Utsav busy.

Participants also got a chance to visit the Zoroastrian Information Center where they got to experience the multimedia ‘Yasna’ project in virtual reality using 3D goggles. Another stop was the Mirza library that exhibited some rare books and manuscripts for the viewing pleasure of the attendees.

Other photographs by Sooni Taraporewala were exhibited in the lane leading to the Iranshah.The sports games continued through the day and eventually each sport had a winner with some very closely contested finals.

Edul Daver, Global Chair of the World Zoroastrian Chamber of Commerce made a fantastic presentation on the activities, mission and goals of WZCC.

A series of awards were presented to various eminent Parsis who have excelled in their field. They included Jehaan Kotwal, Sooni Taraporewala and many others.

A fantastic dance choreographed with the beautiful creations of Ashdeen Lilaowala took place. Ashdeen’s work was appreciated by the audience. The highlight of the evening was the spectacular production ‘Amar Jyoti Zarathushtra’ by Mithoo Jesia and the Muncherji Edulji Joshi Memorial Trust, Dadar which ended with a standing ovation and thunderous applaud from the crowd. A stage performance was choreographed by Burzin Engineer; and the closing act by Merlin D’souza, who is fondly nicknamed the Female Rahman, and is a pianist, composer and music director.

Highlight Day 3:

On the concluding day the crowd welcomed Mr. Vijay Rupani, the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He was given a tour of the area which is under renovation at the Iranshah Atash Behram. The Atash Padshah has been moved to the adjacent building. The valedictory address by the Chief Minister included - “The Parsi community is peace loving and filled with good intentions; and has always given back to the society through bigger initiatives and institutions, for instance the B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad, JJ School of Arts in Mumbai and Serum Institute which makes affordable vaccines and promotes the Swachh Pune initiative.”

The food was yummylishous all three days!

With a final vote of thanks by Mahrukh Chichgar and Hoshaang Gotla, the IUU 2019 came to an end.

Gahambar – The Feast of Obligation

The Gahambar of November 29, 2019 was a landmark occasion for the Zoroastrians in the UAE as it was the 25th consecutive annual gahambar held in Dubai. This would not have been possible without the enormous generosity of one business family, the Sidhwas. Freny and Freddy Sidhwa have sponsored the gahambar each year since 1994, and fittingly the Emirates Parsis Working Group (EPWG), the organisers of the event, felicitated the couple at the venue. A memento was presented to them and wall charts were placed on which the community members expressed and noted their gratitude and appreciation to the family for their large-heartedness in sponsoring the event over the years and bringing the community together.

Some 325 Zoroastrians attended the event, which was held at the Ibn Seena English School, Sharjah. A hum bandagi was recited at the start of the gahambar. The EPWG committee members, who put in a tremendous amount of effort to ensure the success of the day, took their turns, along with volunteers, to supervise the make-shift kitchen and serve the yummy food to the community. Many Zoroastrian youngsters enthusiastically pitched in to help as food servers, making repeat trips to the kitchen and back to ensure that every bawa and bawi took the Jamjo Ji call seriously and went home on a perfectly satiated stomach.

The bhonu was served in traditional patra style. It comprised of mutton pulao dal, sali-ma-marghi, chicken cutlets, lagan-nu-achaar and rotli, and was accompanied by soft drinks and ice-cream. There

was also vegetarian food for vegetarians which was catered by Penaz Virji.

Many local Zoroastrian entrepreneurs availed the opportunity to sell their home-made treats at the function. It was a huge hit, as always, with community members encouraging them by buying vasanu, badam pak, malido, chocolates, jams, cookies and Zoroastrian artefacts such as hand crafted table cloths, napkins, greeting cards etc. on offer.

A raffle draw was held and Freny Sidhwa graciously picked up the winning names from the bowl. There were prizes galore and everybody was happy. Here’s to the next 25 years!

Humankind is currently facing an unprecedented global crisis. The might and arrogance of the greatest of men and nations have been felled and brought to knees by the tiniest of organisms! However, after this deadly pandemic God will make a way. Trust Him. But man, after having suffered desperate social, economic, and health setbacks must learn to respect and not inflict any hurt to the all-pervading Nature.

Will man change? The truth is that even collectively, and despite all gadgetry, we are simply too small and weak before her power and plenty. Let’s go back to the good old habits of our ancestors a century or two ago. Did I say don’t be modern or progressive? But do it in tune with nature. Soulfully. With music, poetry, romance; with love and kindness and no harm to life around us.

Within half a week of quarantine we are already experiencing spring in its rhyming splendour.

The birds are tweeting and flying freely, the flowers are blooming, the trees swaying; the air is now so much purer, and the lungs almost ready to take on the challenge of the prevailing new monster. True, Nature is healing, and other species are reclaiming their space while humans retreat. Time to introspect. Let’s give our Mother and Her other offsprings a chance, and see how she turns soft and rewards us.

Go green, not with envy, nor with greed, but green between and alongside yellow and blue. Go vigorously, but be gentle; and stride afresh with renewed energy. Don’t be consumed by material gains or losses. Don’t destroy yourself nor others for your worldly pursuits. Nothing is permanent. Like our lives.

Let’s all strive to make this wonderful world the glorious garden it used to be. For our own peace and pleasure, and for our children to cherish!

I can sleep when the wind blowsBy: Roshni Rimalwala

Years ago, a farmer owned land along the Atlantic seacoast.

He constantly advertised for hired hands. Most people were reluctant to work on farms along the Atlantic.

They dreaded the awful storms that raged across the Atlantic, wreaking havoc on the buildings and crops. As the farmer interviewed applicants for the job, he received a steady stream of refusals.

Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached the farmer. ‘Are you a good farm hand?’ the farmer asked him.

‘Well, I can sleep when the wind blows,’ answered the little man.

Although puzzled by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help, hired him.

The little man worked well around the farm, busy from dawn to dusk, and the farmer felt satisfied with the man’s work.

Then one night the wind howled loudly in from offshore.

Jumping out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushed next door to the hired hand’s sleeping quarters. He shook the little man and yelled, ‘Get up! A storm is coming!

Tie things down before they blow away!’ The little man rolled over in bed and said firmly, ‘No sir. I told you, I can sleep when the wind blows.’

Enraged by the response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the spot. Instead, he hurried outside to prepare

for the storm. To his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been covered with tarpaulins. The cows were in the barn, the chickens were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters were tightly secured. Everything was tied down. Nothing could blow away. The farmer then understood what his hired hand meant, so he returned to his bed to also sleep while the wind blew.

When you’re prepared, spiritually, mentally, and physically, you have nothing to fear. Can you sleep when the wind blows through your life?

The hired hand in the story was able to sleep because he had secured the farm against the storm.

The above story goes on to talk about trials and tribulations in life and if we do our best to understand, accept, and implement the principles learnt by us we will experience a deep sense of security, peace, and joy from within. We will then be able to ‘sleep when the wind blows.’

Story of the Journey of the Eternal FlameFrom Iran to India told in FAQs

When and why did the Zoroastrians leave the town of Hormuzd in Iran?

The Zoroastrians before coming to India, sojourned in the mountains of Khorasan for a hundred years and then travelled to Hormuz and undertook a voyage by sea to Diu. The traditional account does not provide an exact date of the journey of the Zoroastrians and there is a debate over the exact year of their exodus and settlement ranging from 716 C.E to 936 C.E. The reason for the exodus for leaving Iran lies in their loss of political and social power and invidious minority status in Islamic society. When did the Zoroastrians arrive in Diu?

According to tradition they landed in Diu around 697 C.E. and stayed there for almost 19 years. But the stifling heat and barren soil forced them to set sail once again towards the western coast of mainland India. What happened as they set sail towards the western coast?

When they set sail towards the western coast they were battered by a terrible storm. Huddled in their little boats, the Zoroastrians prayed fervently to ‘Ahura Mazda’ and promised to build an Atash Bahram, if they were saved. Fortunately, their prayers were heard, the storm settled, and they landed safely on dry land in around 716 C.E. in Sanjan. Who welcomed them in Sanjan?

Legend has it that the new settlers were met by the emissary of the Hindu King Jadi Rana, who set five conditions before giving them shelter. The Zoroastrians agreed to the conditions such as - forsake their weapons, become peaceable subjects, adopt the local language, dress and

observe the performance of marriage ceremonies after sunset. For centuries thereafter they have kept their promise and mingled peacefully with the local population like sugar in milk.

How did the generous hosts of Gujarat address the new settlers?

The local people addressed them as ‘Parsis’ or the people from the ‘Land of Pars.’

What did the Parsis do after settling down in Sanjan? They adapted to the local customs and eventually consecrated their Holy Fire Iranshah, drawn from sixteen sources, in 720 C.E. in their new homeland.

In Zoroastrianism what does ‘Fire’ stand for? ‘Fire’ is a symbol of God’s Divine light and Zoroastrians bow in reverence to the Holy flame.

For how many years did Iranshah remain in Sanjan?

It remained for 669 years until political events took a turn in 1297 C.E. when the Muslim ruler, Sultan Mahmud, invaded Gujarat and occupied the Sanjan area.

What did the Parsis do thereafter?

After the occupation of Sanjan, the Parsis took shelter in the Bahrot Caves and kept the sacred fire there for 12 years.

What happened after Bahrot?

As the safety conditions improved, the Sanjan priests shifted, the holy fire, to another village known as Bansda (Vansda) where it remained for 14 years. During this period, one of the pilgrims, Changashah, also known as Changa Asa, of Navsari and a benefactor, used to travel to Bansda. He persuaded the priests of Sanjan to move to Navsari.

When did the Holy Fire move to Navsari?

In 1419, the holy fire was moved to Navsari, where it stayed for 320 years,(1419 to 1740) except for three years (1733 to 1736) when it was taken to Surat on account of the attack of the Pindharas the nomadic robbers. When the situation eased the Holy fire was brought back to Navsari.

When did the Holy Fire move to Bulsar?

The Sanjana priests and the Bhagarias (local priests) of Navsari had a working arrangement to run the sacred fire temple, but this understanding broke down and legal issues ensued. Disturbed by this development, the Sanjana priests moved out of Navsari with their sacred fire and in 1740 housed the fire in one of the two agiaries (the first level of fire temples) in Bulsar (also known as Valsad).

When did the Holy fire move to Udvada?

Even in Bulsar the Sanjan priests could not come to amicable terms with the local priests of the agiary and they decided to move to Udvada. The Holy fire was brought to Udvada in 1972, and for a number of years the Holy fire was kept in a private house, until it was shifted to the new building of the ‘Atash Bahram.’ Why is the Udvada ‘Atash Bahram’ known as the ‘Iranshah’?

The Udvada ‘Atash Bahram’ is known as the ‘Iranshah,’ “King of Iran” a symbolic representation of the Zoroastrian Monarchy of Iran.

Who built the ‘Atash Bahram’ in Udvada?

The architect and builder of the temple was Dinshaw Dorabjee Mistry from Mumbai. The existing fire temple was built with the charitable support of Dadabhoy Pestonjee Wadia in 1829. It was refurbished by Lady Motlibhai Wadia in 1894.

Name the different celebrations that take place at ‘Iranshah’?

The anniversary, known as ‘Salgiri’, is celebrated every year according to the Shahenshahi Zoroastrian calendar on ‘Adar Mahino’ (Month) and ‘Adar Roj’ (Day).

Apart from the ‘Salgiri,’ the other religious observance held every month is the ‘Bahram Rog’ (the twentieth day of the month).

The Parsi New Year, in August.

On festive occasions, Udvada comes to life with large number of pilgrims buying sandalwood, flowers and other religious paraphernalia to offer to the Holy fire.

Which are the three ancient prayers in Zoroastrianism?

The three ancient prayers are - Yatha Ahu Variyo, Ashem Vohu and Yenghe Hatam.

How should a Zoroastrian begin his prayers?

According to Zoroastrian tradition the prayers for personal work should begin by remembering ‘Ahura Mazda.’ That is why Zoroastrian prayers begin with the words ‘Khshnaothra ahurahe mazdao’ - “for the happiness of Ahura Mazda,” ‘Ba name yazad’ - “in the name of ‘Yazad.’

How many ‘Ashem Vohu’ prayers should one recite for granting of wishes?

• One ‘Ashem’ after completion of any work or prayer

Bahrain Zoroastrian Association 2019-2020

It’s been a fun filled year for our Bahrain Zoroastrians thanks to the variety of events organized by the BZA for them.

AGM, 10th May 2020 - The AGM (Annual General Meeting) was held at the Premiere Hotel followed by lunch.

Dae Mahino Jashan, 6th June 2019- In keeping with the essence of Dae Mahino on the Parsi calendar, a Khushali nu Jashan was held at Manijeh and Percy Mistry’s residence, where besides the celebratory Ravo, members bonded over a scrumptious Chinese cuisine and other bawa delicacies prepared by the lovely ladies of the community.

Navroze Function, 17th Aug 2019- The community congregated to celebrate Navroze at the Mewar restaurant, where everyone enjoyed jolly banter and high spirits, with authentic Indian cuisine which was savored to mark the occasion.

Fravardin Roj, Fravardin Mah, 4th Sept 2019- The community gathered at our Aramgarh, and held prayers for the deceased. Candles and joss sticks were lit and placed on the graves at the Aramgarh.

Parsis in the pool, 1st Nov 2019- To beat the heat, it was time for us bawas to chill and dip our feet. The pool party was held at Perin and Jehangir Postwalla’s compound and the unique idea of having ‘chatpata chaat’ to savour our taste buds.

Treasure Hunt, 6th Dec 2019- The year 2019 ended out on an energetic note for the BZA. It was an event full of energy and high spirits. It was followed by lunch at‘M restaurant.’

Picnic in the park, 24th Jan 2020- It’s that time of the year where we welcome the cool breeze and chilly winds! It was an evening full of fun and outdoor games that brought out the child in every adult.

Navroze Function, 20th Mar 2020 and Ava Yazad nu Parab, 23rd Mar 2020 had to be CANCELLED due to the pandemic coronavirus. Let’s pray to keep one and all safe and in good health.

‘Freddie Mercury Close’ street sign unveiled

A short secluded section of Hanworth road, starting outside World Zoroastrian House (WZH) in Feltham, has been renamed after its most famous residents.

‘Freddie Mercury Close’ was officially unveiled on February 24, 2020 by Freddie’s sister, Kashmira Bulsara and the Mayor of London Borough of Hounslow, Councillor Tony Louki.

At a ceremony, on a very damp morning, surrounded by friends, family, residents and fans of the great singer and all the UK community members and supporters of the World Zoroastrian Organization (WZO), Kashmira Bulsara pulled back the special cover to reveal the new street name. The sign is placed outside the WZO’s head office which is now housed at 1 Freddie Mercury Close.

After the street unveiling, the guests were welcomed into WZO’s Communal hall by Darayus Motivala and introduced some of the dignitaries. They included Lord Karan Bilimoria of Chelsea, Seema Malhotra the local Labour MP, Shahpur Captain, Chairman of WZO and of course the Mayor and Kashmira Bulsara. Ervad Jimmy Madon, WZO’s Youth Co-ordinator, started the proceedings with a minute’s silence for Ervad Rustam Bhedwar and Ervad Marazban Dastur followed by a short prayer with 3 other young priests. He then briefly outlined the principles of Zoroastrianism and gave an introduction to WZO.

Lord Karan Bilimoria, spoke on the remarkable achievements of the Zoroastrians in India, Britain and around the world. He remarked that it is in the spirit of Zoroastrianism to put in the hard work and be at the top of the game. How else could such a miniscule community achieve so much? He then quoted from two of Freddie’s songs, “We are the champions of the world” and “Don’t stop me now.”

Shahpur Captain, presented souvenir medallions depicting the World Zoroastrian House to all the speakers and to Angela Parton who has been working tirelessly for many years in Feltham preserving and enhancing the town’s memorial to Freddie Mercury. It is planned to turn this into a memorial garden with a bust of Freddie.

Although Freddie was born in Zanzibar (a part Tanzania) under his family name of Farrokh Bulsara, he moved to Feltham along with his family to a house at 22 Gladstone Avenue. After first studying art at Isleworth Polytechnic, now West Thames College, Mercury studied graphic art and design at Ealing Art College, now a part of University of West London, from where he graduated with a diploma in 1969, a year before he formed the band with whom he will forever be associated, Queen.

Fairy tale about Cypress of Abarkuh – one of the world’s oldest tree

PERSIAN THEMES

Abarkuh is a small town on the border between

the Iranian provinces of Pars and Yazd.

Abarkuh is home to 4500 years old cypress tree

(Persian – Sarv) that stands some 30 metres tall.

Its trunk has a diameter of about 4.5 meters and

a circumference of above 11.5 metres.

Many Zoroastrians revere this ancient tree as

sacred. Some tie ribbons on the branches and

make a wish. When the wish is fulfilled, they

return to untie the ribbon. The tree is 4000 to

8000 years old.

For Zoroastrians the cypress is rich in symbolism.

It’s a symbol of life – a tree of life. Local folklore

claims that the tree was planted by Zarathushtra.

Occupation in agricultural sector provided the people with leisure time, which they filled with play.Backgammon is believed to have originated in 3000 BCE in Mesopotamia. It is the oldest known recorded game in history, even older than Chess.

Playing cards and backgammon provided a variety of entertainment to people in Iran.

Apple & Mint Cream Cheese TeaMakes: 4 servingsTime: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS• 6 tea bags green tea with mint• 4 cups boiling water• 2 cups fresh green apple juice• 4 oz cream cheese, softened • 2 tbsp whipping cream• 2 tbsp milk• 2tbsp sugar

PREPARATION

1. Beat cream cheese and milk in medium bowl with mixer until

blended.

2. Add cream and sugar; beat on high speed until thickened.

3. In large heatproof bowl or pitcher, place tea bags. Pour boiling

water over tea bags. Cover; let steep 10 minutes. Remove tea bags.

Cool tea for 15 minutes.

4. Stir freshly squeezed green apple juice into tea and chill.

5. Pour the chilled tea into glasses and top with a few spoonfuls of

the cream cheese mixture.

Grilled Caprese BruschettaMakes: 4 servingsTime: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS• 4 slices of good country bread• 1 large garlic clove, peeled• 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil• 12 cherry tomatoes, quartered• 1 ball of buffalo mozzarella, roughly torn• 1 pinch of dried oregano• 1 pinch sea salt• 1 pinch fresh ground pepper• 8 fresh basil leaves

PREPARATION1. Grill the bread, then immediately rub the garlic over one side and drizzle with half the extra virgin olive oil.2. Rub the cherry tomatoes with a little the extra virgin olive oil and sea salt and grill until the skin begins to split. 3. Divide burrata between the four pieces of bread. Pile tomatoes on top of burrata & bread. Finish with roughly torn basil leaves, sea salt & fresh ground pepper and another generous drizzle of olive oil.

Smart ways to tidy up, heal and set your life in order

Skin GuardSqueeze a juice of half a lemon to get rid of stains from your light fabrics. Later add a pinch of salt and leave it on for a few hours. Wash off with soap and detergent.

Boil a handful of peppermint leaves in two cups of water and let it cool. Use the solution as a natural insect repellent and spray it in spaces where ants attack.

Cumin seeds can cure mild insomnia. Mix half tablespoon of cumin powder with one tablespoon of mashed banana and gulp it down before bed. It increases production of sleep inducing chemicals in the body.

Rub petroleum jelly on insides of your new shoes and let it absorb overnight. This softens the material and reduces the chance of a shoe bite.

The sponge or cloth that you use to wipe your floor or other household items with can get dirty with time. Soak them overnight in a bucket with four cups of salt dissolved in one liter of hot water.

A few cloves of garlic can take care of your bacterial skin infections. Take a few cloves of garlic and boil them in a cup of water and let this solution sit for 10 minutes. Sip on this garlic tea through the day to improve your immunity.
