May Acts of Recognition

Acts of Recognition (AoRs) Acts of Recognition are given to students for achieving personal, academic, or social goals. We use the Seven Teachings to help students name their goals. This may be when a student goes beyond regular expectations or continually demonstrates skills and/or behaviours that con-

tribute to making Mulvey School S.A.F.E.

The following students and teacher received 75 Acts of Recognition stickers in the month of May:

Full Day Kindergarten - Ms. G. Hayes

Hello students and families of Room 3!

I am missing you all very much and I enjoy our check in during the week! Through our conversations and all the posts made on seesaw I see you are all still working very hard remotely and I am so proud! It has been a very challenging year full of changes however you have all done such an amazing job with all the adjustments and made it thought the school year successfully! Although I was not with you all as long as Ms. Dumond, I can absolutely say it was wonderful getting to know everyone and see how you have all learned and grown so much!

In June, we will continue to work on beginning sounds and introduce middle and end sounds. We will also begin to build our sight word recognition, word families and rhyming words. Additionally, we will be continuing to practice letter recognition, letter sounds, and practice writing letters of the alphabet.

For Math, I will be posting activities related to matching numbers and objects to 30, counting numbers to 100 and adding numbers with sum to 10. We will also continue with missing numbers, one more/ one less, before and after and patterns.

In Science and Social Studies, I will be posting lessons on trees and seasons. I encourage you to walk around your community, see all the different things in your community and explore and observe these topics. Draw pictures or write what you see.

I hope you have a wonderful summer vacation full of fun

and sunshine. Stay safe and healthy. Enjoy!

Nursery Ms. S. Gomes

It is so hard to believe that we are already in June! Last month we had some fun planting flowers and making a special card to go with them. The children were so proud of their planting and eager to take their gifts home to

share with their families. We also took some time to draw some self portraits. The students did such a great job of looking closely at themselves and adding details to their drawings such as eyelashes and even glasses if they were wearing them. They turned out perfectly. We were also able to spend some time outdoors

enjoying the beautiful weather. We took our clipboards outside and took some time to draw things that we see in the world around us. The children enjoyed creating Art outside. To continue on with our learning this month we will be working on printing and learning our numbers. We started with our Number of the Day activities instead of our Letter of the day activities in May and will continue with that for this final month. We have made it all the way through all 26 letters of the alphabet! Way to go Room 2! I am so proud of all of you. Along with learning how to identify, print and count numbers we will also be working on a variety of math skills and fine motor activities this month such as creating, extending and identifying patterns, subitizing, cutting, tracing and printing our first and last names in both upper and lower case letters. Regardless of whether we are learning in the classroom or remotely, I know that based on how hard

everyone worked on their school work remotely for the month of May, that there will continue to be so much learning happening.

As our school year comes to a close this month, I have to express how very proud I am of all the students in Room 2 and their families for supporting them on their learning journey.

We have had such an amazing school year together. It has been truly a privilege to share a classroom with such wonderful students. Take good care, have a happy, safe and very fun filled summer.

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM Grades 1 & 2 Ms. L. Klassen

May was a strange and wonderful month! We almost made it through the entire year without a school going to remote learning, however, since the 12

th only a handful of

students were in the classroom while most were in their homes and I only saw them on the screen. Of course I missed the energy and the give and take of live interaction and live conversations but at the same time I was so impressed

with how respectfully students dealt with each

other during our google meets. Thank you to parents and students for facilitating these meetings. At the time of my writing I do not know if we will be together in June or not. I am certainly hoping we are! Re-

gardless, June will offer time for outdoor play and review and consolidation of learned concepts. Thank you to all students and their families for providing me with a beautiful learning year. The bright eyes, kind hearts and learning minds outshone the darkness of the pandemic. Have a great summer!

Grades 1 & 2 Ms. A. Cruzada

Last month, students in Room 5 were actively engaged in our Remote Learning Activities through Seesaw and by participating in their Activity Books. For Mathematics, students learned about place value, greater than and less than , odd and even number, equality, inequality, numbers before and after, addition and subtraction.

For Language Arts, students focused on editing sentences, making inferences, spelling, CVC words, blends, digraphs, conjunctions and rhyming words.

For Science, students were encouraged to think like an OWL, which means “i Observe, I Wonder, I Learn.” We studied about different types of animals such as squirrels, polar bears, and different species of bears. Students had an active discussion about what they observed about these animals, they shared in class the things that they wonder; something that they do not know yet but want to know,

and to be able to learn the answers on the things that they wonder, we watched different educational videos about these animals. Learning fascinating facts about animals, made the students more engaged in class-room participation. Lastly, in Social Studies, we learned how to read map

symbols and directions about our community helpers, neighbourhood, and ways on how to help out communi-ty , leadership responsibilities, resolving conflicts, and respecting individual differences.

Furthermore, our highlights for the month of May are; Students creatively made a flower card - A hands-on experience on how to do simple gardening made the students excited. We also participated in a clean-up drive activity within our school

playground, learning how to be of help in our community and care for the environment even in our own simple ways, Each student insightfully shared what they wanted to be in the future which is something that we all wish to come true. I hope that we will all have a wonderful and safe summer vacation!!!

Grades 2 & 3 Mr. J. Truss

It seems hard to believe that another school year has come and gone. And what a year it was. And in spite of the challenges that we were presented with throughout the year, the students of Room 23 displayed tremendous development and growth both academically, and as valued members of our classroom community. It was an absolute pleasure working with such a wonderful group of young people. One of the highlights of the past month for the classroom was being able to create an in-class bulletin which depicted various aspects of ancient Egypt. Another highlight of the year was the design, construction and testing of the skateboards we made. I would encourage all students to maintain and build upon the academic gains they have made this last year over the summer months. Reading daily for pleasure (magazines, comics and brochures, etc.), help with preparing a meal by reading a cookbook or following instructions on packaging are just two of the many ways in which students can apply their literacy or mathematical skills. In closing I would like to wish you all a safe and restful

summer and look forward to hopefully seeing all of you

again in September.

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM Grades 2 & 3 Ms. K. Rosenberg

Hello Mulvey Families! I hope that all of you are continuing to do well, and are able to enjoy the beautiful, sunny weather.

Throughout the month of June, we will continue learning about shapes, problem solving as well as beginning early multiplication in Math. Daily writing activities are focused on a variety of writing styles such as narrative, informational, persuasive, writing responses and free writes. In Science, we will be continuing to study all about the growth and changes in plants and in Social Studies, we will be finishing our Country Research Projects.

I am so proud of the Room 21 students! They have continued to adapt to so many changes, work so hard, doing amazing things, and you should all be very proud of yourselves!

It has been such a pleasure to teach all of you this year. The students formed a true community of learners, characterized by everyone supporting each other while in school as well as during remote learning. I will always remember the daily jokes that students wanted to share; laughter and smiles were brought to everyone’s face. I also want to say a big thank you to all the parents/guardians for all of your continued support, patience and kind words throughout this unique school year.

Please feel free to email me at [email protected] if you ever have any questions, work to share, or would just like to say “hello.” Please continue to take good care, stay safe and enjoy the beautiful weather. Have a fantastic summer break!!!

Grades 3 & 4 Ms. W. MacKenzie

I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful, long-awaited warm weather! Throughout June, we will be working on finishing up with division and also working on fractions in mathematics. In social studies, we will wrap up our Country Research Projects and in science we will continue with the unit on Growth and Changes in Plants. It has definitely been a school year like no other. The students have done, and

continue to do, an amazing job of adapting to the many changes and different ways of learning this year has presented. Thank you to all of you for supporting your child and the school with their education and well-being! I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to teach your child this school year. We had a lovely, supportive classroom community while in the school and during the remote learning experience as well. Please email [email protected] me if you have any questions or to simply connect. Please continue to take good care and enjoy the June weather. Have a safe and lovely summer break and enjoy spending time with the special people in your life!

Grades 3 & 4 Ms. D. McFadyen

Hello families and students of Rm. 17.

This wonderful class made me feel extremely welcomed and it made the

transition a lot smoother. I am so proud

of the way Room 17 adapted to all of

the changes. From changing teachers

to moving online, the students with the

assistance from Parents, Families and

Guardians took the challenges with ease. Thank you to all

of the families who are supporting the home learners

during this school closure. This month we will continue

taking care of our sunflower plants and watching our plant

experiment. We are growing plants without water, sunlight

and air. The weather is becoming nicer and the students

will get outside to see some plants in the community on

our plant scavenger hunt. In Math we have been learning

about symmetry and have created some art using symmetry. In Social Studies we have been learning about Ancient Greece. We will be comparing the ancient and

modern Olympics and will hold our own mini Olympics

outside. We will be continuing learning throughout the

month of June, whether from school or from home. I wish

you all a wonderful summer. Stay safe and stay healthy.

Grades 5 & 6 Mr. B. Kussin

It is really hard to believe that another year of learning is rapidly coming to an end! The students in Room 13 are working at staying focused on completing their assignments and homework.

This month, either remotely or in person, we will continue learning about fractions, decimals and percents. We will be concluding our look at the Holocaust and conclude this topic by watching the movie Anne Frank if we are back in school. This is a thought provoking movie which illustrates daily life for certain people during this time in history.

Of course as usual, the most exciting event this month is the Grade 6 Farewell. Planning is underway and as always, it will be the time to celebrate all of your child’s successes throughout their time here at Mulvey. We look forward to having you join us watching our virtual presentation of the Farewell on Friday, June 25

th!

I would like to thank all the parents/guardians who have taken an active interest in their child’s progress this year. It is only with your help that your child can experience the successes they deserve.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer!

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM

Grades 5 & 6 Ms. C. Fraser

Hello Room 16 Families,

We have endured some interesting times and finally made it to June. The weather seems to be getting nicer which allows us to venture outside and get a bit more fresh air in our lungs. I hope you are all staying active and getting outside as much as possible. Activity and movement help keep our body and our brain to stay alert and healthy. I want to say how very proud I am of all room 16 students this year. We have worked hard in this classroom, created a strong community together, shared and supported our learning, and all the while stayed in fairly good spirits (even when faced with the anxieties and worries of the pandemic). I want to say a big thank-you to all of my students this year for bringing a smile to my face, even on the hard days. We will continue our learning until the end of June and hope for some normalcy to come back into everyone’s

life. Take care of each other and stay safe and healthy.

Grades 4 & 5 Mr. B. Papineau

Well folks, it’s been a year to say the least. We know all the things that made it so, but just let me tell you that your children were amazing through everything they’ve faced, whether it was in class or online for

remote learn-ing. Through all difficulties that a masked, physi-cally distant environment posed, I have seen much growth and maturing from the students of Room 19. These were truly interesting times.

In all seriousness, I would like to thank each and everyone of the parents and family members of Room 19 students, for trusting that your students were coming to a

safe place, and hope-fully expe-riencing at least a little bit of normalcy

Grades 4 & 5 Ms. C. Vande Graaf

It is really hard to believe that another year of learning is rapidly coming to an end! The students in Room 18 have done an amazing job this year with staying positive and engaged throughout both in-class learning and remote learning.

This month, either remotely or in person, we will finish up our unit on fractions and begin a quick unit on perimeter and area. We have just finished learning all about the Human Body and are ready to move onto Simple Machines. This will take us right to the end of the year as we finish this unit up with some fun design projects. We will continue to learn about the Canadian Government and what each of the three different levels of government are responsible for.

We have our Grade 6 Farewell to look forward to at the end of this month and hopefully there will be an opportunity for us all to be together again as a class before the end of the year. Fingers crossed!!!

Whether we see each other virtually or in person, I wish you all an enjoyable and happy summer.

Stay Safe!

Coach Program Ms. P. Solmundson

It’s hard to believe we’re in our last month of school. It has been quite a year and everyone adjusted so well to all the changes. We recently finished reading the entire series of books that started with the novel Hatchet. The students really enjoyed the character Brian and all the life lessons he learned surviving in the bush. The chicks hatched on May 19

th and we were so

excited that we got to see quite a few break through their

shells. They went to live at the farm on the 21st. Now we

are getting ready for the emergence of our painted lady butterflies and we are looking forward to releasing them. In art, we are working on a watercolour project with Miss Brenna. This year’s Coach awards will be delivered to each student’s house. The team will be coming around for a front lawn visit with each student on the 23

rd and 24

th, if

current health orders allow. We are looking forward to celebrating all the students and what they have accom-plished this year.

Grades 4, 5, 6 Coach Program Mr. M. Jefkins

Our Tomatosphere investigation was a big hit! Students were very engaged and enjoyed predicting which set of tomato seed had been exposed to space. After we were

done experimenting, we repotted the plants and many of us took them home to continue growing. There will be some juicy tomatoes in our futures! Our current novel is Brian’s Return. This is the follow-up to Hatchet. It tells the story of what would

happen “if” Brian had to survive in the Canadian wilderness through the winter. We cannot wait to see how he manages. Once again we raised Painted Lady

butterflies. We will be releasing them soon. Our chicks hatched at the end of May. We had a very successful hatching of healthy chicks. They were so cute. They stayed to visit with us for a few days before making their way to a local farm. Our students were very excited to present a Mulvey

Assembly on The Seven Teachings and the Environment. It was well done and well received. Congratulations to the students who participated with singing and drumming, awesome art, wonderful readings, and great ideas. We hope everyone has a safe and happy summer holiday.

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM Grades 1, 2 & 3 LAC Mr. R. Janczuk

This month in room 8 we will continue working on our Language Arts and Daily Edit.

We have also introduced the electronic Raz Kids program. This program complements the classroom reading levels and will track or read to the student. There are also follow up comprehension questions. We will continue working on the electronic math program "Dream Box".

In Science this term we will do a follow up to Seasonal Changes with the Water Cycle (Hydrologic System).

As we continue our Egypt Unit, we are working on Hieroglyphics.

We encourage all students to continue practicing your reading every day at home. Always try your best and be respectful to everyone.

Grades 1, 2, & 3 ASD Ms. L. Costello

Room 6 students have been very busy this month. They helped to plant the flowers out in front of our school and

are in charge of watering them daily. Room 6 students painted rocks yellow with smiley faces and hid them around the community to help brighten someone’s day. They also had a lot of fun “ mock painting” the school with paintbrushes and water. The students continue to work hard everyday on their individual work and group work. They love to play picture bingo, show their alphabet and number knowledge on the smartboard, and play all the fun games

our speech and language therapist has given us that help them with their speech goals.

For the month of June, we are hoping to be able to go for walks and visit other parks in our community if the restrictions are lifted. If not, we have some great ideas on how to learn, keep cool and have fun in our own area. It’s hard to believe the year is almost over.

Mr. A Physical Education Teacher (Mornings)

The end of the school year is upon us again. Although this year has been different, I hope that

your children have enjoyed their time in the gym and outside being physically active. In physical education class the students have been playing a variety of low

organized games, frisbee and football outside, as well as a continued interest in soccer in the gym. We have high hopes that next year the Mulvey Mustang football and

soccer teams will be in action again playing in the Inner City Soccer league. I hope everyone has a wonderful summer, stay active and has a chance to relax and

rest. Thank you to all the students who have worked hard in gym class and are continuing to live

healthy and happy lifestyles.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE

ART STUDIO 15

It has certainly been an interesting month for us all, with students working both from home and school! I hope you have all been finding ways to stretch your

creative muscles. To those of you who are busy working from home, I am looking forward to seeing your

art on Seesaw. Spring has certainly sprung and as we go into these summer months we are blessed with

artistic inspiration all around us! Tapping into this inspiration all students at Mulvey have been creating

fields of flowers using watercolour washes, dot art and splatter art techniques. All of which have been inspired by contemporary artist Yvonne Coomber. I am enjoying

watching this colourful field grow as our students finish their art both at home and in school. If you want

to paint like Yvonne, check out my Seesaw instructional on this art project and learn along at home!

I hope you keep your Art on as we hit the home stretch

of this school year! Keep moving and dancing and finding reasons to get a little silly and creative while safe

at home! I will miss you all this summer! Congratulations to the Grade 6 students as they move on to new artistic adventures in Junior High. I look forward to seeing the

rest of you all back at Mulvey in September!

Take Care and have a great summer,

Community Support Worker Corner Hello Parents/Guardians, Caregivers and Families.

Time flies when one is doing what you love to do and when you are working with a good team and a wonderful community. That is what I feel right now. It is hard to believe that the school year is soon ending. This year, like last year has been a trying time to many of us, but we have also learnt so much through it and in an unprecedented time that we have been working in. The challenges we faced have made us resilient and a strong team together. As we end the year let us continue to practice healthy ways of living in safety so that we can enjoy summer with our families and friends. Together we are learning that we can stick together even in tough times to provide for the kids we care for, To the parents/guardians, caregivers and families and to teachers and all staff at Mulvey School. I appreciate the time I have spent with each one of you and especially getting to know many of you and working together with some of you on various activities and programs. Thanks to the virtual connections that allowed us to work together on zoom as we were cooking, painting, baking and making blankets. Thank you to all those who were able to take part in one or two of the programs and activities. As well, together as a school community we enjoyed sharing food donations from Food Rescue Canada. It was good to share, work and learn together while socializing and having fun as a Mulvey community. I would also like to thank all of our community partners that we have been able to work with through this school year. We are thankful to be connected to a community that supports and values our school community. The Mulvey School Parent Council has been extremely supportive of the school’s work as well as the work of the community support worker’s projects. Thank you very much Parent Council and parents in the work of supporting Mulvey students/parents/guardians/caregivers and families. Food Donations We are thankful to Food Rescue Canada for their generosity and their continuous supply of food to our school community throughout this school year. We will continue to receive food on a weekly basis until the end of June, and we will inform you accordingly. Please watch out for the communication and contact me or the school for your supplies. The Harvest Manitoba, Breakfast 2 Go Program will also continue weekly throughout the summer’s months. The day of the week is still to be determined. I would like to thank everyone who has assisted in making sure the food is picked, delivered and repackaged so parents/guardians/caregivers and families can receive a bag. To the parents who have assisted, all the staff at the school who have been so helpful in the process, the school custodians who did the off and on loading of many boxes, and all my colleagues who have supported this cause in various ways, thank you. We are a team that builds the community we support.

Coming up

Cornish Library (20 West Gate) My name is Andrea and I am the head of the Children’s Department at the Summer is just around the corner which means the Winnipeg Public Library’s TD Summer Reading Club is about to begin!

The start date for the Club is Monday, June 14th, and runs until Tuesday, August 31st. The program is free and encourages children to continue reading over the summer to have fun and prevent reading loss. No reading lists are required. Children from the ages of 0 – 12 can participate at any of our 20 branches. This year we are trying to keep it simple, children will receive a free official reading kit that includes stickers, a notebook, and web access (to participate in online activities).

For teens, we have our online Teen Summer Reading Club, which runs from June 14th until August 31st. Teens (grades 7-12) receive weekly newsletters via email with quizzes, contests, book lists, and teen programs at the Library. There is no required reading and the purpose of the club is to engage teens with the Library, literacy, and creative pursuits throughout the summer months. The program is completely free and there are many great prizes to be won!
