SCIENCE REQUIREMENTS

4 YEARS OF SCIENCE ARE REQUIRED TO GRADUATE.

Gwinnett requires:

Biology, Chemistry, Physics

PLUS 1 additional year of any elective science course we offer.

• The math component becomes critical as students move into Chemistry in 10th grade.

• Alignment of leveled math and Honors/Gifted Chemistry and Honors/AP Physics are essential for student success.

• Students who are not in Accelerated/Gifted math but take Honors/Gifted Chemistry or Honors/AP Physics often struggle.

• Elective Sciences Include: Anatomy/Physiology, Astronomy, Ecology, Forensics, Microbiology,

Oceanography

AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics I, AP Physics II,

AP Physics C

What is a “4th year science”

requirement & how is it fulfilled?

ANSWER:

LOTS OF CHOICES

4th year science elective choices

WITHIN the Science Curriculum: Human Anatomy/Physiology, Astronomy, Ecology,

Forensics, Microbiology, Oceanography

AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics II, AP Physics C,

AP Environmental Science

Offerings in other Curriculums (Engineering,

Tech Ed. and Family Consumer Science): Energy and Power, Alternative Technologies, AP Computer

Science, Food Science, and Lifespan and Nutrition

Note: Students do not have to wait until their senior year to take their

“4th” year science. They can take it during 9th, 10th or 11th grade…if they meet the requirements!

COLLEGE PREP BIOLOGY

MATH PLACEMENT: no suggested requirement

READING LEVEL:

advanced vocabulary; students should be prepared to take notes; involves content that is often difficult for students to grasp – will need to review nightly!

ASSESSMENTS: Milestone and GATEWAY

The Gateway Assessment covers biology and chemistry content. Mastery in content knowledge, comprehension, and synthesis is very important.

The 10th grade Gateway is a writing based document.

HONORS & GIFTED BIOLOGY• ASSESSMENTS: Milestone and GATEWAY

Students should really LIKE science and be highly motivated to perform/follow through

Should have/be WILLING to quickly develop solid problem solving skills, and work ahead

MATH PLACEMENT:

Geometry

Gifted Geometry

Accelerated Geometry

MATH TEST AVERAGE of 85% or higher is highly suggested (raw scores, not including curves, drops, or replacements)

READING LEVEL for

HONORS/GIFTED BIOLOGY

Advanced level biology classes involve:

Detailed vocabulary

Complex content

Detailed labs

These require a student to already have a high reading level and solid comprehension ability

Hints and Tips…

*

Page 14: SUCCESS IN HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE...SUCCESS IN HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE …and the choices along the way to graduation! Co-Dept Chairs for Science: Rhonda Zambo and Pam Perry SCIENCE REQUIREMENTS

*SUCCESSFUL 9th grade STUDENTS…

*Come to class prepared with all necessary materials.

*Use eClass DAILY – calendars and resources are typically posted on eClass or Google by all teachers and are extremely helpful in developing good study/preparation habits

*Have or DEVELOP GOOD ORGANIZATION SKILLS

*Are engaged in the daily lessons and ask questions.Note – BYOD does not mean play on the device…

* laptops/iphones should ONLY be used when pertinent to the daily lesson

*Review notes/homework/practice problems at least 2 or 3 times a week.

*Read/practice when asked to do so.i.e., USE ONLINE TEXT/RESOURCES!

*COMPLETE ALL ASSIGNMENTS AND TURN THEM IN ON TIME!

*WHEN IN DOUBT…..

*Talk to the teacher and let him/her know you are having a tough time.

*Ask specific questions about how to organize your study materials.

*Review labs, homework, & tests once they have been graded to inquire about WHY you missed what you missed and how you can do better moving forward.

*ABSENT FROM SCHOOL?

If you miss a day of school:

Check your teacher’s calendar in eClass

Make note of the lesson

Upon return to school, see the teacher and make a plan to get the work made up

DON’T WAIT…its up to you!!!
