PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It is once again my pleasure to present this report on the past season – one in which much progress was made and success achieved.

APPRECIATION As with any progressive sporting organisation there are always a number of key people who go the extra mile on behalf of their Club ! In this regard I would offer our grateful thanks to the following SNLCC stalwarts; Executive Members – who dealt with administration matters most effectively. Training Pavilion - The combined Committee made up of willing workers from the Lynn-Avon Soccer and SNLCC Clubs. Through their sterling efforts we now have a magnificent facility which will serve both bodies well into the future. Team Officials - We are extremely grateful for the tireless efforts of Managers and Coaches who assisted our senior and junior teams. Sports Quiz - A most enjoyable occasion with special mention to our dedicated organisers in Peter and Kath Geaney. In respect to the participating teams a hardened group of intellectual veterans took out first place and put the “Young Guns” in their place. Hopefully this event will be repeated in the upcoming season! Catering - Kath made a further valued contribution by providing very welcome refreshments following Thursday evening practices. Groundsman - Our Grounds Superintendant has expressed the view that Mr. William Hoes of the Council Parks Department who was our Ken Maunder Park Groundsman over the past season was extremely conscientious relative to his duties and would be among the very best we have encountered in recent memory. Club Sponsors – We are indebted to a number of business organisations who supported the Club during the 2010 – 11 season. Bar Manager - Last but certainly not least I would again recognise the outstanding service provided to the Club by our popular and highly respected Manager in Dave (“Chalky”) Simmons who put in a staggering number of hours in this demanding role !

GENERAL ITEMS Burglary - :Late in the season the clubrooms were broken into and the miscreants not only caused significant damage but also managed to steal the large safe containing a substantial sum of money from the downstairs lounge area. Fortunately our loss was covered via our insurance policy. Many years ago we suffered a spate of break-ins which led to members sleeping over in the upstairs lounge to deter the local criminals. In recent times the area around Avondale and adjacent suburbs have been plagued by a plethora of of burlaries (in my own case my home has been broken into twice as has my car !) It appears that these “Ratbags” sleep all day and spend their evenings prowling the streets for easy pickings. Accordingly we would appeal to all members to keep a close eye out for any potential offenders and if in doubt ring the Police immediately 1

Team Placings & Individual Honours Details re teams who performed well in their various grades and the names of those who gained representative honours are contained elsewhere in this report. Sincere congratulations to our high achievers at both senior and junior levels – keep up the good work !

SNLCC GREATS FROM THE PAST A glance at the Club Honours Board reveals a lengthy list of SNLCC players who have represented Auckland and New Zealand in cricket. What is perhaps not well known is that the following also excelled in other codes. In alphabetical order; BELSHAM Selwyn The Auckland wicket keeper who was also a rugby league star at

halfback for the Kiwis. BELSHAM Victor In my view the best Premier Captain in the Club’s history ! Repped for Auckland in basketball and like his younger brother was

involved in rugby league as an international referee. Was officiating in a very controversial match between the Kiwis and France where the volatile “Froggies”assailed him with a load of Carlaw Park mud.in a very ugly incident !

On leaving for greener pastures Vic later became President of the

Australian Squash Federation. KEMP John A long term All White who anchored their defence over many years

(“the Ryan Nelson of his day !) HOUGH Ken A giant of a man who was one of the greatest characters in our

Club’s history..Came from Australia where he was the goalkeeper in their national soccer team. Took up the same mantle with the All Whites as well as representing New Zealand at cricket.

Immensely strong he bowled at real pace off a four step run-up. Ken’s main claim to fame came when in a test match against

England played in Christchurch he top scored for NZ batting at number eleven !

NORMAN Bruce A fine all-rounder for the Auckland cricket team in earlier years he

also featured in the New Zealand Secondary Schools soccer team. Bruce also repped for Auckland in bsdketball. SCOTT Verdun As I mentioned in last years report Scotty was a wonderful opening

bat alongside the great Bert Sutcliffe on the 1948 tour of England. Eleven years earlier he was fullback in the Kiwis who played two

games in the UK when World War 2 broke out and they had to return home !

To the best of my knowledge all of those listed above who featured so brightly in our Clubs history have sadly passed on (except possibly Sel Belsham ??)

The seasons come and go with considerable rapidity and in this respect I would wish all members a most successful and enjoyable 2011- 2012 season – we hope to see you all back on deck again in the very near future!

CRICKET POETRY AWARD – WINNING ENTRY

“THE CATCH”

Standing under a rainmaker that is falling towards your waiting hands, it’s surprising how much crosses your mind – how you’d like to pash with Cathy McBride behind the grandstand after the game, how the Coach said Mental Toughness was the key to Success, how catches win matches and Doug Walters served in Vietnam because he loved his country, How if your marks don’t improve you won’t be allowed to play cricket again for the rest of the summer, how the Kookaburra hangs in the air like a baggy cap you hope to wear and then spinning closer, looks like all the mistakes you’ll ever make in life and slips through your cupped fingers in slow motion, before falling to rest, right there, at your feet on the sun burnt grass. Author : Andy Kissane (NO ! – Definitely not written by Donners, Elvis or Trainer !!!)

Chairman’s Report

The 2010/11 cricket season has now come to a close and it’s now time to reflect on what was another very successful season for the club. As I look back over the last 12 months the club has undergone significant change. Premiers Gone from the 2009/10 season were Premier Coach Barrington Rowland and senior players Darren Eckford and Gareth Jacobs. James Nolen also stepped down as Premier Captain after a number of seasons in charge. Jeet Raval and Jimmy Neesham were also spending allot more time playing for the Aces and allot less time being available for the club. This meant a changing of the guard for the Premiers and an opportunity for the younger players to step up. It is therefore very pleasing to report that the Premiers had one of their best seasons on record, they retained the Twenty20 title, finished an unlucky 2nd in the Two Day Championship and 3rd in the One Day competition. Losing only 2 one dayers all season. We were very fortunately to secure the services of Shoruban Pasupati as our Premier squad coach, he has done a great job in building on the base we already had, and he also managed to get on the field when the Premiers played Parnell in the one dayer. The addition of Greg Hay from Central Districts and our Overseas Pro Hendro Puchert, both outstanding players added some much needed experience to a young side. For the first time in the clubs history it appointed a 20 year old Premier Captain in Jonathon Bassett-Graham, this was an undoubted success with Jonathon’s captaincy proving to be a revelation. And who would of thought this time last year that young Josh Presland would spearhead the Premiers new ball bowling attack, or that a group of 17 and 18 year olds in Sachin Variath, Abdullah Sayed, Sean Solia, and Harry Hanham would all get a taste of Premier cricket this season. The Other Senior Teams Reserves also had a great season, and finished a hard fought 2nd in the Two Day Championship. They were again ably captained by Kelvin Gatland. It was very pleasing to see the return of a number of older players to the two day ranks, welcome back Bruce Pamatatau, Kiran Mehta, Chris Wood, Anthony Simmons, and Sanka Goonitilleka. These guys brought with them some much needed experience and were invaluable in guiding the younger guys throughout the season in whatever team they played. As a club we fielded 8 two day teams this season, 6 One Day and 2 Sunday Twenty20. The highlight for these teams was the Senior A team snaring the Senior A Two Day Championship. The Senior C2 White team and the One Day 4C’s both finished 2nd in their respective competitions. Representative Honours It’s also timely to recognise those that went on to achieve representative honours. I’d like to start by congratulating Reece Young on his elevation to the Black Caps test team as the wicketkeeper. Congratulations also too Martin Guptill and Daryl Tuffey for their continued involvement with the Black Caps. SNLCC players to play for the Auckland Aces this season included Michael Bates, Martin Guptill, Jimmy Neesham, Jeet Raval, and Daryl Tuffey.

17

Auckland A players were Michael Barry, Jonathon Bassett-Graham, and Greg Hay. While Michael Barry, Jimmy Neesham and Ajaz Patel were selected for the Auckland Under 23 side. Sean Solia and Sachin Variath were selected for the Auckland Under 18 team, and Auckland Year 9/10 representatives included Mitchell Murray and James Parslow who was captain. Junior Cricket The club fielded a record number of junior teams this season with 25 teams taking the park every Saturday, along with 45 Midgets who undertook the Milo Cricket program at Ken Maunder. Special mention must be made of Junior Chair Jeff Shaw who has done an outstanding job in ensuring each team had a full roster. That they were fully equipped and that there results were entered on a timely basis. Jeff being the statistion he is reported at the Junior Prizegiving that these teams had achieved a 50.2 percent winning record this season. Jeff has recently been elected President of Western Districts Schoolchildren’s Cricket Association, and we look forward to him guiding this organisation wisely. Facilities The Indoor Training Facility was finally built and despite the many hurdles along the way will be open for business by the end of April. This is an outstanding asset for the club and our players and will allow us the opportunity to further develop our cricketers both young and old. The Astroturf floor was laid in March and as I write the nets are being installed. We will have 5 retractable lanes making our facility the largest of its kind north of Taupo. Interest in hiring the facility is already hotting up with a number of enquiries from community groups as well as the ACA. The Trust that has responsibility for the facilities on Ken Maunder Park currently has a request into the ASB Community Trust for $150,000 to commence the revamp of the clubhouse pavilion. Finances The club is expecting to make a surplus this year, and special thanks goes to our two sponsors Fox’s Ale-House for there continued involvement with the Premiers, and HRV who have sponsored all the Junior apparel this season. The support of these two organisations is huge and very much appreciated by all concerned. Kath Geaney our Treasurer is another who needs special mention. Not only is she the Treasurer, she umpires Premier cricket on a Saturday, runs Kia on the Ken on a Thursday, organises Trivial Pursuit days, and is always the first to put up her hand when there are jobs to be done. Finally, Mmy thanks to Bob Southgate for all his hard work as Club Manager, and the Management Committee for their continued support. Ross Hick, Chairman

Premier Grade Captains Report

The 2010-11 season offered plenty of opportunity for a new look and young side to stamp their authority as one of Auckland Crickets top teams in all formats. With a fresh and enthusiastic new coach in Shoruban Pasupati and myself in my debut season as Premier captain, we sought out to establish a new leadership group of young player, which will steer the clubs future development. Victor Davies stepped into the vice-captain role for the first time this season, and along with this responsibility came one of his best seasons for the club, topped off by a enthralling maiden hundred against Eden Roskill marking his claim as a genuine all rounder and top order batsmen. In addition to a new coach, this season brought about a few new players to bolster the Premier side. Our overseas pro Hendro Puchert offered the team an undeniable hard work ethic and a great deal of experience, which facilitated the guidance needed for youthful seam attack. Our second new addition to the club came in the form of ex Central Districts first class batsmen Greg Hay. Greg’s first class experience and record gave us a quality top order batsmen and yet another wise head to turn to for tactical guidance alongside our very own astute James Nolan. With a new look side, this year saw a change in the structure of the cricket season. With University and Ellerslie splitting back into their own entities and the addition of Birkenhead into the Premier division created a 14team competition. And with the 20/20 competition to be played mid-week for the first time, the season kicked off with the one-day competition. Our one-day campaign started off with a strong win over Ellerslie, with an impressive 5 for 22 Victor Davies lead the attack to restrict Ellerslie to 129, which the boys polished off in the 18th over 1 down. Our next victory came against neighbouring rivals Waitakere, thanks to some hard hitting from Michael Bates and Victor Davies who scored 65* and 53 respectively as the boys fought hard to take us from a ominous position to a solid total with 262. With another strong all round bowling performance lead by Jeet Raval with 3 for 26 alongside spin twin Ajaz Patel who bowled incredibly tight from the other end we cantered home with a 110 run victory. The following week we went 3 from 3 with another comfortable victory against Grafton after chasing down 149 to win. A tougher contest came against Papatoetoe as we faced a much stronger bowling attack. We struggled to 190 with the only notable runs coming from Michael Bates as he steadied the ship on his way to 83. With a low total to defend we backed our selves, as we set the field with our strongest bowling line up possible. Great opening partners Daryl Tuffey and Michael Bates set the tone and applied the pressure. Top knocks came for Greg Hay 63 and Max Montgomery 79 as we put on 239 against Takapuna in a tight affair. We had to fight hard to put ourselves in a winning position but credit to James Nolan who’s masterful 4 for 30 backed up Michael Bates’s lethal figures of 4 for 19. We went 6 from 6 after beating Cornwall on the back of quality performances with the ball from Ajaz Patel 2 for 12 off 10, and Victor Davies 4 for 20 off his 10. Our first lose of the season came against Parnell in our final pool game. After struggling on a turning track against some quality spin bowling we managed to get 235 falling 20-30 runs short of what could have been a winning total. With our 6 wins and 1 lose we qualified for the semi finals where we would meet a strong Howick side. Winning the toss on what looked a hard yet green wicket we elected to bowl first. However we quickly discovered that the pitch was a top batting track and we failed to put the ball consistently in a good area for the first half of our bowling innings. The boys showed great fight to claw our way back into the contest restricting Howick to 256, where at one stage 300+ was comfortably on the cards. This effort was lead by an outstanding partnership at the bowling crease between Ajaz Patel and James Nolan. In our attempt to chase 256 we stumbled, losing a couple of early wickets we fought to form a few valuable partnerships, however wickets close together stifled our run rate and we didn’t respond to the pressure. In the end falling short by 70 runs. Success came in this years 20/20 competition. As reigning champions we regained our title this season after going through the group stage as the only undefeated team. Our First victory saw a monster 202 put up against Waitakere with runs coming from Greg Hay 56, Michael Barry 46, and Jimmy Neesham 63*. This was backed up by impressive figures by Ajaz Patel with 4 for 29. A tight win over Cornwall followed on the back on a

Page 19: SUBURBS NEW LYNN CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL … Reports... · SUBURBS NEW LYNN CRICKET CLUB ANNUAL REPORT ... Record Partnerships, ... how catches win matches and Doug Walters served in

19

skilful display of true cricket strokes round the park from Michael Barry with 78*, with Jimmy destroying the Cornwall attack on his way to 58 off only 25 balls. Great bowling and fielding performance got us home to a 20 run victory. A great knock of 69 from Max Montgomery, and quality partnership in Greg Hay with 41 and Victor Davies with 42 carried us to 181, before a quality spell from James Nolan put to much pressure on Grafton and they collapsed. James’s figures of 1 for 12 off 4 lead the way in a tight bowling performance, which secured another victory but more importantly a spot in the semi finals. Howick would again be our semi final opponent, and after a quick start with the bat, openers Daryl Tuffey and Michael Barry settled the nerves of the lads. The innings was well finished with a determined 31 by Hendro Puchert, leading us to a defendable yet slim score of 134. In what was a hard fought and close encounter, our bowling and fielding got us home. Lead by Daryl Tuffey up front the boys followed, and tight spells from Ajaz Patel who finished with 3 for 21, and James Nolan’s 2 for 16, made it too hard for Howick In the end getting home by 8 runs. To retain out title we had to beat North Shore. Batting first another modest total of 130 was set for North Shore to chase. And again it was our tight bowling and superb fielding which go us through. Top performances with the ball came from Hendro Puchert 2 for 24, and again the two spinners in Ajaz Patel and James Nolan picking up 2 for 19 and 3 for 17 respectively. Two-Day cricket is without doubt the pinnacle of club cricket and with that the Hedley Howard trophy is the most sought out piece of silverware in Premier cricket. We began our two-day campaign beautifully with a big win over Papatoetoe piling on 336 for 6dec. Milestone of a century to Michael Barry confirmed he has a big future not only for the club but with higher honours. Our bowling performance was lead by young Josh Presland, who in his first season of Premier cricket shaped the ball beautifully to finish with 3 for 16 off 13 as we bowled Papatoetoe out for 137. 76 from Jeet Raval and 67* from Jimmy Neesham got us through to a first innings win against East Coast Bays, before being set 185 off 21 overs to win the game. Leading the charge was Greg Hay with a class display of timing and placement amongst some big hitting as he racked up 87. Our most dominant game came against the future winners of the competition. Posting a mammoth 402 for 6dec, with exceptional hundreds to both Jeet Raval 103 and Greg Hay 123* backed up by a solid and smooth 61. The next week would see a devastating spell from Jimmy Neesham, who tore the Takapuna top order apart taking 4 for 38 leaving them 5 for 65 before rain came and ended the match in a draw. With two more wins and three draws to finish the season more impressive milestones were achieved. James Nolan picking up 9 wickets in a match against North shore, Jimmy Neesham 84 against Cornwall, 5 for 52 off 30 for Ajaz Patel demonstrating he is mastering his art, and 112 from Victor Davies establishing his presence as a quality all rounder. To come second overall is a great achievement, but its tough to swallow when it’s so close. Short by 1.12 point. To think that at the start of the season we would have made the semi finals in the one-dayers, won the 20/20 and come 2nd in the two-day championship sounds like a bloody good season. And indeed it is, but the reality is everyone who played premier cricket this year is capable of performing at this level, and perhaps a little bit more self-belief as individuals and as a team is what we need to grow into a championship side. It’s a great problem to have, and it’s just the small things that I believe will change our results. That little bit extra that can be given to finish off a team, coping with pressure situations and figuring out what our best options are will see us become the first team to win all three titles in the future. This goal does not seem far away to me, with hard work and a years more experience in what is still a very young yet exceptionally talented unit, here lies the challenge for next season. To take every chance that comes our way. My thanks to Donners, Chalky, and Bob for their efforts this season, they were always available and always there to support to lads. Jonathon Bassett-Graham, Captain

Premier Reserve Grade Captains Report

This was another good season for the boys but it was another what if year with four games being effected by rain with two of those games with us on top against the top teams. All in all coming second in the two dayers was a great achievement. With the change of format for the new 16-team competition and us not playing any 20/20’s. It was challenging to get the boys motivated to play the weaker teams and trying to get some form with the bat bowling teams out for under 100 three times. With all the Aces players playing prems at the start of the season it was good to see Max, Josh, Ben and Ajax leading by example with great performances with bat and ball and carrying that on for the season playing premier cricket. With the aces season starting and the three boys playing prems we found out just how strong suburbs cricket club is with Rohan da Silva, Harry Hanham, Sean Soila, Sachin Variath, Randika Randeniya, Faasao Mulivia and the return of two starties in Bruce Pamatatau and Kiran Mehta playing reserves this year. More impressive was Faasao playing for Samoa and Sachin, Sean and Harry playing premier cricket. We started the one-dayers off with a hiss and a roar beating Ellerslie by 8 wickets. Then a good batting performance by Max (scoring 114) leading us to 267 against Waitakere beating them by 9 runs. In our first game at the Ken we beat Grafton with Rohan scoring a very good 70 and Nathan Bell taking 3 wickets helping us get over the line by 64 runs. Next was Papatoetoe, which is under going a rebuilding stage at the club. We beat them by 8 wickets bowling them out for 86 with Ajaz taking 4 wickets and Rohan keeping his good form going with a impressive 43*. At this point we where top of the table with three other teams but the next week it all fell apart with loses to Takapuna and a poor performance against Cornwall the next day sending us out of the running for a semi final spot. With no chance of making the semis we played one of the best one-day games I’ve played in. We batted first against Parnell scoring 219 with Randi scoring 50 and Fawad 49. We bowled well restricting them to 205 with a depleted bowling attack. The game was in the balance and Fawad stood up with the ball in the dying overs to get us over the line. With the one-dayers out of the way with us coming fourth it was time to play some two-day cricket against the stronger clubs. We started off with a great outright win against Parnell with Fawad taking ten wickets and Harry making a gritty 55 and a hard fought first innings win against Grafton. Then it was the turn of the rain leading into the last game before Christmas with suburbs in a commanding position having bowling out the top of the table Takapuna for 192 and being 171/6 at stumps and only coming out with a draw after the second day was lost to rain. After the break we played North Shore and welcomed back a old face in Brucey and he never looked like he left scoring 53 as we racked up a score of 249 with Anthony Thompson and me scoring 50’s winning first innings by 156 thanks to Faasao taking 4 wickets. Then came the one of the games of the season against Cornwall. Having won the toss in bowler friendly conditions we bowled first but unfortunately it rained after the first session. Next week it rained in the morning meaning a late start. Cornwall scored 177 and we only had 29 overs to get it in, that’s when Russell Hewage gave me a wink and smiled saying he’ll open up and get us off to a good start. Well did he what, Rusty smashed 60 in the blink of an eye leaving us in good stead to go on and chase down a unlikely score but ended up coming 7 runs short which was a little disappointing. Howick was next and unfortunately the club had a few injuries. The boys played well but came up a little short against one of the front runners in the competition. We scored 220 with Brucey scoring 44 and Randi 59 but just couldn’t bowl them out. Going into the final round, before splitting into top four bottom four, against Waitakere we knew we where a fair way behind Takapuna and need to make some ground up. We batted first scoring a massive 390 thanks to William Good who scored 125 with Fawad, Stacey Hyndman and me scoring 50’s. Going into the second day we knew we needed 20 wickets in get back in the hunt for the title but

22

unfortunately on a very flat deck we could only manage 10 but with that first innings win secured ourselves in the top 4. The weather then played it’s part in the rest of the season only letting us play one and a half days out of four. We drew the last to games against North Shore and Howick coming close to winning against North Shore needing one wicket with four overs we just couldn’t manage it. We had some impressive performers this year none more so that Fawad Ahadi. Fawad scored and impressive 343 runs, most of which where in pressure situations, and took 32 wickets. He also shared the top honour of the Mark Elliott memorial cup with James Nolan. I scored 432 runs at 28, Willy made 300 at 30 and Rohan made 200 runs at 25, which would have been more if he wasn’t injured. Ben Guptill picked up the gloves this year doing extremely well at it taking 25 catches and 4 stumpings before breaking his thumb missing the last half of the season. I would like to say a massive thanks to Tomo. Tomo has hung up his boots after a long solid stint at the club. We all know we will see him back some time in the future (you know you can’t stay away from the place). Winter well Boys and start building for next year. Time to take it that next step and get some silverware in the cupboard. Gats Kelvin Gatland Premier Reserve Captain

Senior A Grade Captains Report

Overall the Senior A team had a successful season. We had a relatively stable team and had a number of superb individual and team performances. We finished only 5.2 points off first place but managed to win the 2-day Championship, which was a great achievement. We had a few very tight games (e.g. losing outright to Grafton by just 2 wickets in the last over of the 2nd day, and losing the 1st innings to Sri Lanka by just one run). If those close games had gone our way we would have gained the overall championship. Nevertheless, we had a good season. The boys always put in a strong effort with a positive attitude. The players who came up from Senior B also impressed both with their performances and with their enthusiasm. Bowling was definitely our strength. Dhivian Govender was our leading wicket-taker with a total of 27 wickets. He was also our MVP for consistently taking wickets and keeping the runs down. The two next highest wicket-takers were Glenn Smith (16) and Avish Sharma (11). These two were superb opening bowlers. The best bowling display was from Kiran Metha (6/23 with match figures of 9/58 vs Grafton). Others who picked up 5 or more wickets in an innings were: Zubran Nabi (5/32), Dhivian Govender (5/28) and Glenn Smith (5/18). Overall batting was a weakness for us. However, we did have a number of good innings. The best by far was Abdulla Sayed with 145* (off 102 balls) in the very first game of the season, including 8 sixes and 13 fours. Four others scored 50s: Nathaniel Bearman (64 off 64 balls, 10 fours and 2 sixes), David Bade (57 off 98 balls, 8 fours and 1 six), Joe Crooks (54 off 71, 5 fours), Kiran Mehta (53 off 59 balls, 3 fours), and Randi Randeniya (50 off 54 balls, 10 fours). David Bade took the most number of catches with 9 (and 3 run outs) while Anuraag Amintinthala (6 catches, 1 stumping, 3 run outs) and Jim Crooks (6 catches) proved to be great keepers. Our best performance was against Hibiscus Coast, who were in 2nd place at the time. We needed to get a win in order to stay in the title race. We lost the toss and were put in to bat on a difficult wicket. After losing some quick early wickets we managed to get 206 in 44 overs, thanks to 44 from Nathan Hickman, 35 from Kiran Mehta and 32 from David Bade. We then turned on an outstanding bowling display, bowling them out for only 57, with Glenn Smith getting 5 wickets, and Avish Sharma and Randi Randeniya getting 2 each. This was a superb effort as in the previous week Hibiscus Coast had scored 412/6 vs Howick Pakuranga. Our Team Player of the season was Randi Randeniya for his positive attitude and for keeping the team motivated. David Bade (Captain)

Senior B1 Grade Captains Report

It was a fantastic season for Senior B Team, with some awesome cricket both pre and post Christmas. We started this season off with a bang, scoring 259 against against Waitakere , I scored 83 and Wasiq scored 67, Jeet Vishi took 3/40 wickets William Burrows took 3/ 34, Daniel Simmons scored 22 and also took 2/27. Then in the next few games we had number of changes to the team line up in the games up until Christmas which made it difficult for the players to find a rhythm and consistency. This also led to few losses. David Day bowled a superb spell of 7 Overs 5/13 which gave us a needed win against Birkenhead. David Day continued his form in the next game against University. His figures were 7/28. Lee also bowled a very tight line which provided assistance to David. This promoted us in the third position. Win against Waitakere changed our position a bit, thanks due to great effort by Crooks brothers 91 by Joe and 31 by James. Nissanka and Anthony took 3 wickets each as well. Match against East Coast Bays was rained out. However, Gaurav scored 58 and Lee took two wickets. The match against Takapuna at our home ground was exciting. We rolled them for 55. Alex Ferguson took 5/11, Daniel took 3 and Dion took 2. I and Anurag finished the game in less than 5 overs. After that we struggled to get 11 players and were short by one or two in each game, we also lost two dayer by default against East Coast Bays which reflected in our games results. Considering all the factors, I was happy with the over all team performance. Everyone gave more than 100% and the team spirit was really high. Players like David Day, Lee, Joe, Wasiq, Daniel, Anthony, Dion were consistent performers. Nissanka fielded well and took some amazing catches. I must appreciate Ross and Bob for their support in managing stress. At no point I was running around and calling people to play for us. This was way different to any other clubs I have played for in the past. The appointment of Woodsie as a coach helped us a lot in maintaining fitness level and developing a training structure. I hope this continue next year as well. A BIG THANKYOU from me to all those who played for the Senior B's this season, it was an enjoyable season and I look forward to the next Jay Changlani Captain 10/11

Senior C1 Grade Captain’s Report

To look solely at the results of our season would paint a disappointing picture, however this year was very much a rebuilding year. Over the off-season we lost the core of our batting line up, our two strike bowlers and not to mention our captain for the previous 3 seasons. This team was re-built from the ashes of last seasons championship winning team, so there was quite a bit of pressure on the remaining members to deliver again. The first step was recruiting new players for the season, we managed to snag Hadley Donald from the higher grades, Doug Blake moved back to Auckland from Whangarei, Aftab a dentist from down the line, Matthew Gosling and Aaron Petit from Howick Pak aswell as a number of up and coming youngsters from the age group grades. On paper it looked a competitive side, however we could never get the same side on the field two weeks in a row and this in the end is what cost us many games throughout the season (as well as the lack of a second out and out strike bowler). In the end we didn't manage to win any games over the course of the season however we had a number of close games, which could have easily turned into victories for us. The games that stand out in my mind were against North Shore in the first round (we nearly beat them with only eight players), a close and controversial loss to Ellerslie and a near out right victory against Kumeu (who had smashed us all over the park in the previous one dayer). The stand out individual performances with the bat came from Hadley Donald (who was the leading runs scorer for us) his best moments were back to back 50's against Takapuna with a massive hang over!, batting almost the best I have ever seen him bat. Doug Blake started the season on fire with three scores over 70 in his fist 5 innings, however his season was ended early with a sickening blow to his face, which caused him to miss most of the remainder of the season (fortunately he has fully recovered!), he was a massive loss for us and a turning point in our season. Philip Keane was as solid as ever, more often then not, holding the innings together when we collapsed and giving the bowlers something to bowl at. The surprise package of the season however was Petey Guilbert, who not only was world class in the field, but decided to come out swinging with the bat and managed to hit a number of huge sixes over the course of the season. With the ball, Oliver Petit stepped up to lead the bowling attack in the absence of Kent and Tyler, and although he did not play as many games as he would have liked, he lead the attack with maturity and more often than not broke through with wickets when we needed them most. The rest of our bowling attack had a very 'dibbly dobbly' look to it until a youngster from Kelston Boys first XI, named Josh Cunis, filled in for us over the school holidays. Man can this kid bowl, it was hard to believe he was only 16-17 years old, he has plenty of talent and i'm sure he will be a regular in the higher grades in the future. The wickets were shared quite widely amongst the squad, everyone chipping in when required. I also have to make a mention of the young guys coming through, Jasjit Grewal, John Day, Josh Lindstrom and Josh Lawrence. They all stepped up to the mens grade for the first time this season and they played with a lot of maturity and were a pleasure to have in the team, and each put in good performances for us over the course of the season. Josh Lawrence in particular I believe has a lot of talent and will grow into a quality batsman in future seasons, and we hope to have in our squad for a few more seasons yet. A big thank you also has to go to Ross Hick, who more often than not at the last minute managed to find us players to fill in when our guys pulled out at the last minute, without his support we not have had enough players on more than one occasion. A thank you also must go out to all the players that filled in for us over the course of the season (and there were plenty!), without all of your help we would not have been able to put a team on the park. Within this group of players was Nathaniel Sami, who came out of retirement for the tenth time?, thanks Nat! I would also like to mention Mr Gosling, who was our number one (and often only) supporter, who came to almost every match and always had encouraging words for the lads! Cheers!

Although we didn't get the results we would have liked, it was still an enjoyable season, especially for me taking over the captaincy for the first time in many seasons. I was lucky enough to have the support of the guys and had a few old heads to bounce ideas off. The core of this seasons team have told me they are keen to stick together and give it another go next season, and along with a few of the old guard looking at coming back, we are looking like having a strong squad which augers well for up coming season. Personally I am looking forward to getting back out on the park and putting some good results together to make up for the disappointment of this season. Hopefully everyone is having a good rest over the off season and is looking forward to getting back into it, so heres to next season! Marc Wells,Skipper

Senior C2 Grade White Captains Report

Overall, another good year for Sen C White, let down (yet again) by some disappointing results early in the season and against some of the weaker sides – adding up to an overall placing of third of nine teams in the grade. Next season we will need a strong focus on getting a good start if we are to come out on top of the grade, as we should aspire to do. Highlights. The 50 run victory over top of the table Waitakere in the penultimate game, was the team highlight of the year – avenging the heavy defeat experienced earlier in the season and demonstrating that on our day, we could clearly beat any side in the grade. There were also a number of individual highlights that we celebrated along the way. While batting, was, in general, a source of weakness for our team, two centuries (Tom – 101* and Tejas – 103) formed the backbone of two big victories, and the seven half centuries accumulated (Kanwel x3, Ben x2, Tom, Rob Heke) were, in many cases scored at critical times. I believe strongly, that our bowling attack was the best in the competition, and the key to our good results, with many good players able to step up if needed. The depth of options available to the captain meant wickets were shared fairly evenly (five bowlers achieved 15 wickets or more), but limited five wicket bags to just two (Kanwel, Ben). Of bowlers taking over ten wickets in the grade our team can boast the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th best bowling averages in the grade (Nadun, Ben and Prashant respectively). On other dimensions of the game, our team also demonstrated excellence. Tom captured the most wicket-keeping dismissals for the grade (19), despite being the fourth keeper we were to trial and getting the job only half-way through the season. Rob Heke and Tejas also excelled in the field coming in second equal for most catches (8). Thanks, at least in part, to several run-outs, for which I must take responsibility, Amit also had the unhappy honour of scoring the most ducks in the grade (6) – sorry Amit! Team MVP went to myself (I swear there was a vote!), and Tom took out most ideal team member. Thanks to the club for the support provided throughout the season with extra players etc when needed. Looking forward to another good one next year. Ben Mayson

One Day 1A Grade Captains Report

Well another Mafia season has come to an end. Needless to say, it really has been a season of ups and downs. Unfortunately, more downs than ups. After a couple of early losses in the first part of the season, we managed to land on our feet with two good back to back wins against Ellerslie and East Coast Bays. From that point onwards, the rest of the season can virtually be summed up with the old adage "close but no cigar!". Apart from a couple of real Harvey Crockers (aka shockers) against Takapuna and Ellerslie (the latter played in Cyclone Bola conditions where the ball was more like a cake of soap and a snorkel, flippers and mask were mandatory), the lads continued to put in improving efforts each week without just getting over the line and ending up on the winning side of the ledger. A change in captaincy mid season reaped immediate reward with the team picking up two "default" victories. Unfortunately, the captaincy change did not actually bring about an onfield victory, which would have been the preferred result. Although, there was one occasion after playing through the rain against Ellerslie with the game on a knife edge and the result still in the hanging, where the toss of the coin proved ultimately to be a master stroke, Special mentions go to Gareth Cameron who consistently performed with the bat scoring 329 runs and in the field this year yet again. Cyril Mead who spun himself to a 22 wickets haul for the year, and also Glen Hoey, our kit man who always remained committed in the outfield and was the first guy to put his hand up every time a screamer need to be taken from the long off boundary. Also for mention is Ross our manager, who worked tirelessly for the team this year. Thanks to Ross we all now have enough stocks of chocolate bars to feed all our future grandchildren. Thanks Ross. Also, Clinton Stephens (aka Elvis) for orgainising the team and rallying the boys when needed at times throughout the year. Finally, although we finished at the lower end of the table (not last thank goodness), this was not a reflection on the effort the boys put in this year. We toiled hard but just couldn't get that lucky break we needed. No doubt the boys are looking forward to a brighter and better season next year in the hope that the lads can carry on the Mafia legacy, but this time on a better winning note!. One Day 4C Grade Captains Report In my report for 2009-10 season I mentioned that “overall it was a season that promised a lot at the start but our lacklustre performance in all three departments reflected in inconsistent results.......I do believe that we have learnt a lot about our own game and that next year we will back better than ever”. What a comeback it was this season from 7th last year to finishing 2nd this year. We made the Top 4 Finals for the first time and with a little bit of luck, some better weather in the final, may have won the Grade. Exceptional individual and team performances in all three departments ensured that we won some tight games against higher ranked opponents. It was my first season captaining the side and I would like to thank all my team members for their support and acknowledge their effort and performance on the field that ensured we peaked at the right time and played some tough cricket especially in the second half of the season. To mention some stand out individual performances –

Raajieve Sharma was our Mr Reliable scoring 218 runs in 10 innings at 31.14 with highest score of 101. This was topped up with 13 wickets with his leg spinners and googlies at 23.69 with the best of 6/26. Raajieve won the “John Watson Cup - One Day Player of the Year Award”.

Balbalpreet Singh was our Mr Dasher and our teams “Player of the Year” scoring 171 runs in 7 innings at 28.50 with highest score of 109 not out. Babal also opened the bowling for us and took 7 wickets with an economy rate of 4.21.

Supreet Singh Gill was our Mr Pinch Hitter who played some wonderful cameos scoring 182 runs in 9 innings at 22.75 hitting and keeping wickets. One amazing innings of 48 off 16 balls coming in at no 3 in the second over of the match was truly outstanding and also taking some outstanding catches behind the stumps.

Jaspal Singh (188 runs at 18.80 including 70 off 30 balls against tough Grafton team and 7 wickets),

Amit Wadhera (122 runs at 30.5 including 69 not out opening the innings guiding us to victory against Grafton and 6 wickets),

Kay Saunders (crucial 60 against Birkenhead which kept us in the match chasing 254 and taking 6 wickets),

Saral Singh (60 batting at no.10 in the final and taking 11 wickets)

Raman Eswaran (taking 11 wickets and our reliable new ball bowler)

Albert D’Souza (143 runs at average 24.33, picking up a serious shoulder injury halfway through the season and playing through the pain)

Karan Singh (13 wickets at 18.38)

Above were our Go To Men when we required runs or a break through. They put in some sturdy performance with bat and ball.

Sunny Singh was our Ideal Team Member due to his honest effort in the field, coming consistently for net practice and constantly encouraging his team mates.

We also want to acknowledge Zorran, Saurab & Shailesh along with our other ring in’s who contributed well with bat & ball.

In summary this was our best season so far ending on a high. We are all ecstatic at finishing 2nd as a result of some wonderful performances like defeating Takapuna (eventual grade winners) in the season opener, scoring 303 against Grafton United Rebels, chasing 254 against Birkenhead City in round 12, chasing 260 against Parnell Grammar Soldiers in 34 overs in round 14 and chasing 118 against Birkenhead City in a low scoring game under good bowling conditions to make it to the finals. I sincerely acknowledge the support from Raajieve for organising the team, Kay for keeping the team morale high, and Ross Hicks for providing replacement players when we were short. We hope to take this our performance up a notch in the next season. Albert D’Souza Raajieve Sharma Captain – One Day 4C Manager / Playe

Presidents Grade Captains Report

We played as a united unit ALL season and experienced only the odd loss along the way with the majority being great team wins. We ended up third with our championship chances as so often happens decided by one last over loss which prevented us contesting the final. However we can take pride that we were the only team to beat the eventual champions in the playoff round. This team has the finest bunch of physical athletes that I have seen grace the green fields and I have no doubt that when names like Hadlee and Crowe are spoken about in years to come they will also be talking about Crooksie, Shaw, Devereaux, Armstrong, Lloyd, Patel and others. My congratulations to both Gordo & Prakash who shared the honours for this season after awesome contributions with both bat & ball. This season was a huge team effort and others such as Billy, Crooksie or Jeff could also have easily taken awards with their sustained consistency. There was no shortage of players and injuries were at a minimum for a change. In years gone this team had their own standby Ambulance permanently parked just outside the boundary rope – this season the Ambulance & driver was given redundancy. (Although Stan, Alan & Crooksie almost required their services) The overall batting, bowling and fielding was fantastic most times with Mark taking some sensational catches and many others contributing with bat, ball and in the field at critical times throughout the season.

Can’t forget the kids – it was great to see the kids of Jeff, Prakash, Mark, Dean, Gordo, Stan & Billy at different times as it adds to the day. (Truth is half of us would have collapsed on the hot days if these guys didn’t run drinks out to us – much appreciated) Jeff (our organising bitch and the man with two Wakas as shoes) did an incredible job of selections and organisation throughout the year which was great as it allowed me not to be involved in any selection controversy. On-field dummy spits are unfortunately declining with our dummy spit leader Danny well shy of his twenty plus confrontations per season with the opposition. (Age must be catching up with him). Others to have the odd dummy spit included Jeff, Dean, myself (can’t believe that) and of course Billy (The man with the Golden Ears) trying to convince everybody that the opposition had stood on their own wicket – apparently he also heard it although no one else had – go figure! Finally I believe that we can definitely win the championship and that we will be one of the teams to beat for some years to come. Hope to see all you again in a few months, - thanks for the season of fun and great memories. Randall Godfrey, Captain

This season the club fielded 8 teams in the Western Cricket Saturday Morning Cricket, 11 teams in the Cricket Express Junior Grades and 5 teams in the Auckland Cricket Youth Grades. 291 cricket matches were completed with a 49% winning record. 53% in western districts morning cricket, 49% in the cricket express junior leagues and 44% in the youth grades. The following teams were successful in winning Auckland Cricket Pennants: 7A Blue – 7A Minor Champs 7A White – 7A Major Champs 8A Red – 8A Major Champs 8 Premier - Minor Champs (Post Xmas) Special mention must go to Pat Olney’s 7A white team with a 100% win record resulting in that team winning that grade. Other teams of note were Brett Playles 8 Premier team with a 90% winning record and Dean Blackwood, Sean Devoy and Woody Edmonds primary school teams with winning records over 80%. Playing numbers were 200 cricketers in primary and junior grades, 60 cricketers in Youth grades and 45 in Midget cricket. I would like to thank the efforts of the managers and coaches to give their time for practice and on game days along with all the parents that support the teams on the side lines, as umpires and scorers. I would also like to thank Ross for his support and guidance in my first year in the role and the junior committee for their efforts in ensuring the smooth running of registrations and other activities throughout the season. 48

CLUB HISTORY AND STATISTICS Suburbs New Lynn Cricket Club is relatively young, the season just finished being our 37th. We were formed in 1972 as a result of the amalgamation of the Suburbs and Blockhouse Bay - New Lynn Clubs, both old identities with proud traditions. In the early years Suburbs New Lynn was based at the Rosebank Road (now Eastdale Reserve) ground. We moved to Ken Maunder Park in the mid-1970’s and together with the Hockey Club built the pavilion which has been our headquarters ever since. The pavilion was built through club labour, a shining testimony to the commitment of the early members. Through the 70 s and 80’s Suburbs New Lynn fielded strong sides producing many Auckland representatives from whom Hedley Howarth, Geoff Howarth, John Reid, Peter Webb and Stuart Gillespie went on to play for New Zealand. We won the Premier Championship in 1980-81 and 1984-85 and also finished runners-up in 1987-88 and 1990-91. In the early 1980’s work was started on a Club Statistical History. By going back through the Annual Reports a profile on every player to represent Suburbs New Lynn was formed. Each year this file is updated. From the latest Annual Report new players join the “2000 Club” (batting); “200 Club” (bowling) and “50 Club” (catches). Most cricketers are statistically minded and the “Achievements Clubs” have provided a lot of interest. In the 200-/09 season the club won the Hedley Howarth Trophy for the Premier two day Championship and in the 2009-10 season this was followed up with wins over Waitakere in the final of the Twenty20 Championship, and a loss to Parnell in the final of the One Day Competition. In addition a list of Record Partnerships and Record Season Aggregates has been tabulated. One point to note - all statistics are taken from reports submitted by captains or managers for inclusion in the Annual Reports so it is important that a full sets of accurate figures are provided.

Treasurers Report

The 2010/11 season was, at times, a challenging year. We have returned a small profit this year which in large part, is assisted by our continuing trust support and our major sponsors continued support. Our sincere thanks must go to the following sponsors for their support this past season. Fox’s Ale House, a sponsor who supports the club, not only with sponsorship in cash, but also with Player of the Day vouchers for our Premier teams, and quenching the thirst for many of our players after a hard day on the pitch. This year we were also very fortunate to gain a new sponsor and the support of HRV, who supported Junior & Youth cricket in the club with playing apparel sponsorship. It was great to see our HRV friends at the Cricketer of the Year dinner, and we look forward to continuing our relationship with them in the coming seasons. The following trusts must also be thanked for their continued support and considerable contributions: ASB Community Trust, Constellation Communities Trust, Lion Foundation, NZ Community Trust, Portage Licencing Trust and Trillian Trust. Without the support of the sponsors and trusts mentioned above our club would not be able to provide so many opportunities to our members. Although our revenue saw an increase this year, unfortunately so did our expenses. Some due to the GST increase, and some simply due to costs rising. While some expense increases (Coaching, Facility Hires & Overseas Players, Cricket Balls & Clothing) are good to see, as they will in years to come prove more than their value, there are always some (R&M) that are not so welcome. We have suffered a number of break-ins, and loss of property this year, which unfortunately leade to more expenses for repairs and replacement of items. I would like to think the new indoor facility will allow us to maintain or reduce of future hire expenses, while we utilise this amazing asset we now have. Another great year, where nearly all subscriptions were collected, and looking forward we would hope all subscriptions will be collected over the next few years. While the bar was well supported we did not have the same takings in past years. This year we have carried over a small profit of $1100. Our efforts should now focus on continuing in the same way we have this year, and looking for every opportunity to reduce costs and increase our revenue. With the committed and dedicated committee put in place, I’m sure this will be achieved.

Kath Geaney Treasurer
