“Bring Your Own Train” Sunday, February 15 Model railroaders are invited to bring their favorite HO gauge engine and cars and watch them pass through tunnels and over bridges as they operate “their own train” on the New York Museum of Transportation’s layout. Board hears opinions from speakers on both sides of Spencerport’s Urban-Suburban implementation
Local school districts host career and college night for area teens and families
Area school districts are joining forces to present a Career and College Readi-ness Night on Tuesday, March 3 in the Spencerport High School Auditorium at 2707 Spencerport Road. All students currently enrolled in grades 8 through 12 and their families are encouraged to attend this information fair to plan and prepare for the college and career choices ahead.
Representatives from area colleges and businesses will be on hand for this informational evening to provide materi-als and answer questions. In addition, break-out sessions will be offered in the following categories: Culinary and Hospitality; Information Technology; Skilled Trades; Advanced Manufactur-ing; Healthcare; and two- and four-year Colleges.
Participating colleges include: SUNY campuses (Alfred State College; Bing-hamton; Brockport; Finger Lakes Com-munity College; Genesee Community College; Monroe Community College) and Rochester Institute of Technology, Nazareth College, St. John Fisher Col-lege, and the University of Rochester.
Participating community and indus-try representatives include: Electrical Union, Wegmans, Carpenter’s Union, SPX, EarthLink and Unity Health.
The evening is sponsored by Brock-port, Gates Chili, Hilton, Holley, Kend-all, Monroe 2 BOCES CTE, Spencerport, and Wheatland-Chili Central School Districts.

Members of the Spencerport Board of Education are expected to vote Tuesday, February 24 on whether the district will join the Urban-Suburban program.
Spencerport School Superintendent Mike Crumb has recommended the dis-trict join the program in the 2015/2016 school year and both the Teachers and Administrators Associations at Spen-cerport have endorsed joining the pro-gram; however, comments from district residents, parents and teachers during the third and fi nal public information meeting regarding Urban-Suburban held February 3 at Spencerport High School show the community continues to be deeply divided on the issue.
During the meeting, Superintendent Crumb reported on his recommenda-tions for implementation, saying he feels Urban-Suburban, “... would be successful in Spencerport very quick-ly.”
The Superintendent was followed by eleven speakers who explained why they also are in favor of the program. The list included parents, an Urban-Suburban graduate, and Brockport, West Irondequoit and Pittsford school administrators.
If Spencerport opts not to join the program, Urban-Suburban graduate Darius Melvin said he knows the stu-dents from the city will be o-k. “I’m more concerned with students and teachers of Spencerport who won’t have the opportunity to build relation-ships with people who don’t look like them,” he said.
James Brennan, Assistant Superin-tendent for Finance at the West Irond-equoit Central School District, called all facets of the Urban-Suburban pro-gram, “seamless -” from the fi nancial aspects - “... it does generate positive revenue-” to the screening process, to the benefi ts for all students - “.... it has a positive infl uence on kids,” he observed.
The public comment portion of the meeting began at about 8:30 p.m. and lasted for nearly two hours with 42 people signed up to speak.
Although Ty Zinkiewich, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction at
Spencerport, asked for a “night of re-spectful commentary,” emotions ran high and he repeatedly had to ask some members of the audience to stop interrupting speakers.
Mary Lou Clifford, who said she was a life-long resident of Spencerport, ex-pressed astonishment at the behavior she witnessed. “The disrespect to oth-ers by those who don’t agree is abomi-nable,” she said.
Speakers expressed opinions on both sides of the issue and many became emotional as they spoke.
Those who spoke in favor of Urban-Suburban included parents, residents and teachers.
“It’s not perfect,” one parent with three young children said of Urban-Suburban, “but the potential diversity would add to the value of a Spencer-port education. Give it a chance.”
Sara Snarr, a mother of three girls, said she has discussed the issue with her daughters. Following their talk, one of her daughters said, “It doesn’t have to be a perfect program ... it’s a good program.” Snarr noted she feels, “... there’s a huge portion of the com-munity that supports the program.”
Other residents expressed a number of concerns regarding Urban-Subur-ban.
Many said they work hard and make many sacrifi ces to be able to live in the community, pay taxes, and send their children to Spencerport schools. They questioned whether those who do not live in the community and don’t pay school taxes in the district should be able to send their children there.
Others called Urban-Suburban ex-clusionary and elitist. The program is open only to minority students and suburban districts are highly selec-tive regarding the students they allow into the program. “All entitlement pro-grams are wrong,” one resident said.
Michael Miceli, a parent, noted only one of the seven Monroe County School Districts participating in the program has joined in the last 40 years (most of the districts participating joined before 1970) and that after consideration, the Churchville-Chili School District de-cided not to join the program.

The Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce held their annual awards banquet on January 30 at the Plantation Party House. Kyle Pittman, Ryan Cottom and Bren-den Budd won their bouts by pin and Neil Egenlauf by technical fall as Spencerport defeated visiting Canandaigua 54-22 in high school wrestling.
Seniors Brandon DiNatale, Nathan Ehle, Kaleb Pascoe, Enzo Sacchetti and Phil Wicks were each honored prior to the match.
Tyler Mitchell got the Rangers off to a fast start as his third period takedown helped him overcome a 2-1 deficit and win 3-2 at 99 lb.
After Max Wersinger won via forfeit, Wicks won his 113 lb. match by major de-cision 11-0.
Dom Ferranti, in the tightest contest of the night, went to the fourth overtime period before escaping and earn a 2-1 deci-sion at 120 lb.
Egenlauf registered eight points in the second period in his 15-0 tech fall win at 126 lb. and Marek Costner won via forfeit at 138 lb. to put the Rangers up 27-6.
At 145 lb., Pittman barely beat the final horn to pin his man in 5:59 after five take-downs over the three periods. At 152, Sac-chetti escaped in the second overtime and held his man down for a 2-1 decision.
Cottom took 2:12 to register his fall at 195 lb. while Budd needed 3:27 to do the same at 220 lb. Sam Bianchi concluded the match with a forfeit win at 285 lb.

Spencerport sports groupsraise funds for More Than A Game
The More Than A Game Foundation, Cam’s Pizzeria and Spencerport Central School District hosted the 18th Annual Hoops for the Hospital Basketball Tourna-ment last December and the 24th Annual Coach “Chow” Girls Basketball Classic in January.
Together with the Spencerport Winter cheerleaders and basketball teams from Brockport, Canandaigua, West Irondequoit and Webster Schroeder, a donation will be made in the amount of $4,501.12 to the More Than A Game Foundation Hoops for
Hospitals program in the name of Alex Turnquist. Alex is a Spencerport High School sophomore student-athlete.
All proceeds from this tournament are directed to the More Than A Game Founda-tion for the Hoops for Hospital program and will benefit the Golisano Chidren’s Hosptial at Strong. The check presentation ceremony will take place on Friday, February 13 at approximately 7 p.m. in the High School East Gym.

The Spencerport Lions Club conducted vision screening for preschool children, ages one through five, at JLU Childcare Inc., in Spencerport on January 14. This free program is of-fered by local Lions clubs in collaboration with the IRA G. Ross Institute of Buffalo. The eye screening identifies potential vision problems in preschoolers, who cannot be accurately tested by using standard methods that require complex motor and cognitive responses. Specially trained Lions Club volunteers visit childcare facilities and use a noninvasive hand-held camera to take digital readings of the eyes of children whose parents have agreed to participate. The readings are then sent to the Institute to be evaluated by professionals. Parents are then informed of any problems that may be detected. This program has been proven to provide early detection of visual problems, which can be successfully treated. Provided photo.

Scott Seely, who has two children at-tending Spencerport Schools, said the age of the program is actually a draw-back, suggesting it’s time to update Urban-Sub-urban with, “... some sort of equitable so-lution,” allowing students other than mi-norities to take part.
Resident Gary Inzana said he had dis-cussed Urban-Suburban with Rochester Teachers Association President Adam Ur-banski, who told Inzana he felt the pro-gram is good for students who are chosen, but is a one-way street and largely for show. “No community should be forced into this program,” Inzana said he was told by Urbanski.
Inzana also questioned why it is only diversity among students which is empha-sized and not diversity among faculty and staff.
“Spencerport schools have done just fine without these programs,” Inzana said.
Several speakers, as well as those sitting in the audience, called for a public vote on the issue, but School Board President William Sweeney said a public vote on Ur-ban-Suburban is not possible as there is, “... not the governmental structure” in the district for such a vote.
He said the February 24 School Board meeting will be held at Cosgrove Middle School at 7 p.m. and that privilege of the floor would be held to 30 minutes.

Churchville-Chili students selected to perform at Carnegie Hall
More than 10,000 nominations are re-ceived annually for a chance to participate in the High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall. This year 500 artists were chosen, including Church-ville-Chili students Marissa Tucker and LaMont Haywood. Tucker will perform as a Soprano 2 and Haywood as a Bass 2 at Carnegie Hall in February with the Hon-ors Choir.
The Series’ Program Director Morgan Smith says, “Being selected to the Honors Performance Series is something each fi-nalist should be extremely proud of accom-plishing. We select only the most talented performers applying on an international level. Working with these conductors and performing at Carnegie Hall is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that these student musicians never forget.”
Tucker has studied music for eight years and is a member of the Churchville-Chili Senior High School Concert Choir and Off the Beat (OTB). regarding the Union Street/Route 259 Erie Canal bridge being posted to limit vehicle weight: A trucker who owns a three axle, 10-wheel dump truck says an empty truck might weight 12 tons or more. A fully loaded 10 wheeler would weigh closer to 27 tons.
He was responding to information from the NYSDOT, which stated a loaded truck weighs 12 tons. In reality, he said, a fully loaded truck would weigh much more. The vehicle itself is likely to weigh 12 tons.
A representative at the NYSDOT said the department’s guide to such vehicles uses approximately 9 tons as an
empty weight and a loaded vehicle at 12 to 25 tons as a guideline. Truck drivers know (or ought to know) the weight of their trucks, the DOT says.
Those who travel the posted bridge frequently might mentally calculate their own vehicle’s weight and that of the oncoming vehicle, giving new meaning to the phrase “fit on the bridge together.” The bridge’s condition is a concern to businesses, school districts, service providers and residents. The DOT reports a plan for repairs is being developed.

The meeting was duly called to order and upon roll being called, the fol-lowing were:

BOND RESOLUTION DATED JANUARY 27, 2015 AUTHORIZING THE ISSUANCE OF $3,366,750 GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS OF THE SPENCERPORT CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT, NEW YORK, TO PAY SAID SCHOOL DISTRICT’S SHARE OF THE COST OF CERTAIN CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS TO THE EXISTING BOCES FACILITIES.WHEREAS, the Monroe 2-Orleans Board of Cooperative Education Ser-vices (“BOCES”) has heretofore been created and this School District is one of the component school districts thereof;
WHEREAS, at a special election of the qualified voters of the BOCES, held on December 16, 2014, a proposition was duly approved authoriz-ing the BOCES to construct and equip improvements to various BOCES school facilities to increase their utility for the purposes of the BOCES at a maximum estimated cost of $29,231,100 (the “Project”); and
WHEREAS, in furtherance thereof, the BOCES and each of the com-ponent school districts of the BOCES have entered into an agreement in accordance with Section 1950(14) of the Education Law providing for such construction and equipping of the Project at such maximum cost and the allocation and apportionment of such maximum cost among such component school districts, the payment of each such component school district of its respective share to the BOCES and other matters inciden-tal thereto; and
WHEREAS, said agreement has theretofore been duly executed by BO-CES and by each of the component school districts thereof;
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 1950(14) of the Education Law, nei-ther the approval of the voters of the component school districts, nor the voting of a special tax or a tax to be collected in the installments are conditions precedent to the adoption by the boards of education of each respective component school district of BOCES of bond resolutions authorizing the financing of their respective proportionate share of the aforesaid maximum costs;
WHEREAS, the BOCES has heretofore determined, as lead agency, that the purpose hereinafter described constitutes an action under the State Environmental Quality Review Act of the State of New York and the ap-plicable regulations thereunder which will not have a significant impact on the environment; and
WHEREAS, it is now desired to provide for the financing by this School District of its share of the aforesaid maximum costs, as authorized by said Section 1950(14) of the Education Law;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of Education of the Spencerport Central School District, New York (hereinafter referred to as the “School District”), as follows:
Section 1. The specific object or purpose to be financed pursuant to this resolution is the share of the School District of the maximum cost of the aforesaid construction and equipping of facilities owned by BOCES, as more fully described in the preambles hereto (the “purpose”). No money has heretofore been authorized to be applied to the payment of the cost of the purpose.
Section 2. The share of the School District of the maximum cost of the aforesaid purpose is $3,366,750 (which share of said costs constitutes the maximum estimated cost thereof to the School District, for purposes of Section 32.00 of the Local Finance Law), and the plan for the financing thereof is by the issuance of up to an aggregate of $3,366,750 of general obligation serial bonds (and, if desirable, notes and renewals) in antici-pation thereof) of said School District, hereby authorized to be issued pursuant to the Local Finance Law. Investment earnings on such obliga-tions shall be applied to either the debt service on such obligations, or to the costs of the aforesaid purpose within the School District’s share amount as set for the above or as proportionately increased within the overall BOCES authorization. Such bonds and notes are to be payable from amounts which shall annually be levied on all the taxable real prop-erty in the School District, and the faith and credit of the School District, are hereby pledged for the payment of the bonds and notes and the inter-est thereon.
Section 3. It is hereby determined that the period of probable usefulness of the aforesaid purpose is thirty years, pursuant to subparagraph (b) of Section 1950(14) of the Education Law.
Section 4. Subject to the provision of the Local Finance Law, the power to authorize the issuance of and to sell the bonds herein authorized and the bond anticipation notes in anticipation of the issuance and sale of such bonds, including renewals of such notes, is hereby delegated to the
President of the Board of Education, the chief fiscal officer, or to the Vice President of the Board in the event of the absence or unavailability of the President. Such bonds and notes shall be of such terms forms and contents, and shall be sold in such manner, as may be prescribed by said President or Vice President of the Board of Education, consistent with the provisions of the Local Finance Law.
Section 5. All other matters except as provided herein relating to the bonds and notes herein authorized including the date, denominations, maturities and interest payment dates, within the limitations prescribed herein, and the manner of execution of the same and also including the consolidation with other issues, the determination to issue Bonds and substantially level or declining annual debt service, all contracts for, and determinations with respect to, credit or liquidity enhancements, if any, shall be determined by the President of the Board of Education, or by the Vice President of the Board in the event of the absence or unavailability of the President. Such bonds and notes shall contain substantially the re-cital of validity clause provided for in Section 52.00 of the Local Finance Law, and shall otherwise be in such form and contain such recitals, in addition to those required by Section 51`.00 of the Local Finance Law, as the President or Vice President of the Board of Education shall deter-mine consistent with the provisions of the Local Finance Law.
Section 6. It is hereby determined and declared that the School District reasonably expects to reimburse the general fund (or such other fund as may be utilized), not to exceed the maximum amount authorized herein, from the proceeds of the obligations authorized hereby for expenditures, if any, from such fund that may be made for the purpose prior to the date of issuance of such obligations. This is a declaration of official intent un-der Treasury Regulation §1.150-2.
Section 7. The validity of such bonds and notes may be contested only if:
1.) Such obligations are authorized for an object or purpose forwhich said School District is not authorized. To expend money, or2.) The provisions of law which should be complied with as of the date of publication of this resolution are not substantially complied with, and an action, suite or proceeding contesting such validity is commenced within twenty days after the date of such publication, or3.) Such obligations are authorized in violation of the provisions of the Constitution.
Section 8. This resolution, which takes effect immediately, shall be pub-lished in full in each official newspaper of the School District, together with a notice of the School District Clerk substantially in the form pro-vided in Section 81.00 of the Local Finance Law.

SPENCERPORT•Gravelle, Jeanne Kenyon, died in San Antonio, Texas on February 3, 2015 at age 90. She was born July 11, 1924 in Spencerport to Wilbur and Riletta Kenyon. In 1941 Jeanne graduated from Spencerport High School at 16 years of age as Valedictorian of her class, and later earned a degree at Brockport Teachers College.
She is survived by her loving husband Orville Sr. whom she married on February 5, 1944 in Spencerport. Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents and brother Robert Kenyon. Other survivors include Sharon Bauman, her sister; her sons Orville Gravelle Jr., Lee Gravelle and his wife Carol, and Dale Gravelle and his wife Cathleen. Her grandchildren include Chad Gravelle, Ryan Gravelle, Eric Gravelle, Meagan Rieder, twins Kevin and Brian Gravelle, Jillian Downey, and Caitlin Arrieta. Jeanne is also survived by two great grandchildren, Graeme Downey, Harrison Downey, with two more on the way as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
As the wife of a military officer, Jeanne accompanied her husband Orville on numerous assignments beginning in Pusan, Korea in 1947. From there, the couple transferred to Ohio, Arizona, Alabama, Morocco in North Africa, Madrid, Spain, and ended in Cheyenne Wyoming, where Lt. Col. Gravelle retired in 1966.
After retirement, the Gravelle family moved to Hilton where both Jeanne and Orville taught school for 20 years. They officially retired in 1986 to their present home in Northern Hills in San Antonio.
A reception in Jeanne’s honor will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2015 at their residence in San Antonio. A private Memorial Service for the family will follow.

Marian Tufano from Hilton has been named to SUNY Geneseo’s dean’s list for the fall semester 2014. To be on the list, a student must have achieved at least a 3.5 grade point average while taking a minimum of 12 credit hours.

Students make the dean’s list if they complete at least 12 semester hours and earn a minimum grade point average of 3.50 for the semester.
Thomas Fitzpatrick of Hilton has been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2014 semester at Monroe Commu-nity College. He is majoring in graphic design.
The dean’s list recognizes the academic achievement of students who have completed six or more credit hours with a grade point average of 3.50 or better.
Serena Melvin, a resident of Hilton, was among 233 students from Genesee Community College named to the provost’s list for the fall 2014 semester. The Provost’s List was created to recognize part-time students who have earned a grade point average of 3.75 (roughly equivalent to an A) or better.
Previously GCC recognized these students on its dean’s list, which honors part-time and full-time stu-dents with a grade point average of 3.50 to 3.74. Some part-time students who had earned a higher GPA had expressed disappointment that their stellar performance was going unrecognized.
