Keeping roadways clear and safe are challenges the area’s highway superintendents face every winter season, but this year’s prolonged record cold temperatures and mounting snowfall totals create tough conditions for plow crews. Photographer Walter Horylev met three highway department leaders at their salt sheds last week -- from top, counterclock-wise: Parma’s Brian Speer, Spencerport’s Tom West, Ogden’s Dave Widger. They and oth-ers in the readership report salt deliveries have been slower than usual but that actual salt use is about the same as last year. In extreme cold, straight salt is less effective on roads, so some municipalities blend salt and sand to provide more traction (darker piles in photos). All wonder how much more winter March will bring.

Harsh winter impacts road careby Kristina Gabalski

It’s been a busy winter for local high-way department snow plow crews, but town highway superintendents say they are coping with winter’s onslaught and should have enough salt to get them through the end of the season.

The Town of Sweden contracted for four thousand tons of salt through the state bid with American Rock salt. Offi cials in Sweden say 75 percent of that has been spread and Highway Superintendent Brian Ingraham is being conservative in his usage of salt. The timeliness of salt deliveries is an issue with the continual/frequent storms.

Brian Speer, Town of Parma Highway Superintendent, says, “Our supply is get-ting lower than I’d like it to be,” regard-ing road salt.

He traveled to the salt mine in Livings-ton County recently to check things out himself. “Trucks are going in and out of the mine, but they are putting the brakes on how many orders,” he explains.

Speer says he put in an order for more salt on Tuesday, February 17 and didn’t expect delivery until mid-to-late week of February 23. “Usually if you order on Tuesday, the salt will be here by Friday or Saturday,” he says.

In the Town of Ogden, Highway Super-intendent David Widger says the town’s salt supply is in good shape, but like Speer, explains that delivery of addition-al supplies of salt is slow.

“We’re alright,” he says, “but it’s tough

to get it out of the mine, they are mining each day, but it’s slow getting it out.”

He hoped to receive an order of salt the week of February 23.

Widger explains that during recent bouts of frigid weather, the town has used less salt on roadways. “It doesn’t work as well, we don’t want to waste it,” he says.

Outside of salt supplies, the town is facing the problem of plowing contractors pushing snow into the roads, where it can cause very hazardous and slippery condi-tions and lead to accidents, Widger says.

“They should push it into yards instead of out into the road,” he explains. “There are town codes that state you can’t do that.”

In Riga, Highway Superintendent David Smith echoes Speer and Widger - “Salt is holding up OK, but deliveries have been a little slow,” he says.

He ordered 700 tons during the last few weeks and has taken delivery. “We’re in pretty good shape,” Smith says.

During frigid weather, Riga also con-serves salt by spreading it only on hills, curves and at intersections, Smith says. “Even with additives, the salt doesn’t work very well at those temperatures.

“We’re tired of winter and are ready for spring,” he adds.

Town of Kendall Highway Superinten-dent Warren Kruger says he mixes salt with some sand. The mix helps to stretch the salt and gives some grit to help with traction.

Kruger says the salt mine has been shipping salt to New England and the Boston area, which has been hard-hit by snow storms this winter. He says that although justified, those shipments have caused “some concern” to local mu-nicipalities regarding supplies.

Kruger explains that when he called the mine recently to re-order, he was asked if it was an “emergency.” Kruger says he told them no, “I just want to re-stock a little and get on the list.”

Kendall Highway crews are busy pushing back snow piles along roadways. “I wish the wind would stop blow-ing,” Kruger says, “it’s drifting continuously. Everyone is running out of places to put the snow..... I think everybody is going to have cabin fever.”

Sellers and buyers will enjoy the Hilton Community Indoor Flea Market

A Flea Market has two opportunities - to sell what you don’t want and to buy what others don’t want, according to organizers of the Community Flea Market set Saturday, March 28 in the Village of Hilton Com-munity Center, 59 Henry Street, Hilton. Spaces are available at $20 for a 4’ x 10’ area and sellers keep the proceeds. Pick up an application at the Parma Public Library, Friends of the Parma Library, The Sum-mit Federal Credit Union, Tops Markets, the Community Center, and M&T Bank. Make checks payable to Cash, then send the application and check to Hilton Com-munity Flea Market, 971 Hamlin Center Road, Hamlin. Deadline is March 20. Space assignments will be on the first-come, first-

served basis starting with the first floor of the Community Center and continuing to the second floor.

A portion of the proceeds will be given to the Friends of the Parma Public Library.

Set up time will be Friday, March 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. only. The Flea Market will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Coffee and donuts will be available to purchase in the morning in the Ingham Room (1st floor, southern end of building). Hot dogs, pop and other goodies will also be available during the day.

Call Pat at 752-0515 between 6 and 9 p.m. for other information.

Spencerport Board of Ed unanimous in approval of Urban-Suburban program participationby Kristina Gabalski

The Spencerport School Board’s unanimous decision Tuesday, February 24 to join the Urban-Suburban pro-gram was met with the same mix of emotion that char-acterized debate over the controversial issue during the past several months.

Some in the audience met the vote with applause and a standing ovation. Others, clearly unhappy, expressed their desire verbally before leaving, that current board members be voted out. One man approached the table where the board was seated and was physically removed from the Cosgrove Middle School auditorium where the Board of Education meeting took place. The man told the Suburban News/The Herald he only went up to talk to board members and was told he had to leave.

Residents against Urban-Suburban say they plan to continue their fight through legal channels. They say they are hiring an attorney to sue the district over the fact the Urban-Suburban program is not open to caucasian stu-dents and therefore discriminatory.

Outside the auditorium on Februry 24, Spencerport resident Ed Patt, a coach at Spencerport and a teacher in the Greece Central School District, said he was neither for nor against Urban-Suburban, but could empathize with both sides.

Patt said he grew up in the Brockport Central School District, where Urban-Suburban has been in place for

decades, and taught a student in Greece who was an Ur-ban-Suburban student until her family relocated to the suburbs.

“Let me have 100 students like that,” Patt said.On the other hand, he questioned what the real issue

is with the Spencerport District deciding to join the pro-gram. “If the goal is diversity awareness, is this the only vehicle..... if the goal is saving teacher positions, is there any other way?” he asked.

Patt noted diversity might also be accomplished through field trips or bringing in guest speakers. He added that the Spencerport community has available housing op-tions for all income levels.

Spencerport School Superintendent Michael Crumb recommended during the meeting that the district be-gin implementing Urban-Suburban during the upcoming 2015/2016 school year.

The program will begin with entry points in the first, second and sixth grades, with six students entering at each level. The program would continue to be phased-in until it reaches 72 students.

During the privilege-of-the-floor portion of the meeting, Spencerport resident Tom Mawn presented the board with an 18-page petition filled with signatures of residents who want the board to bring the issue to a referendum, so the public can vote.

Board members met in executive session for about 30 minutes to study the petition and consult their attorney.

Following the executive session, Board President Wil-liam Sweeney told those in attendance, “This program is a decision that rests with the Board of Education. A public referendum would be purely advisory. It would not have legal binding on the Board’s decision.”

During discussion before the Board’s vote, member Mi-chael Zale made a motion to table the vote until after a public referendum was held on the issue during the May school budget vote. The motion did not receive a second and failed.

Zale said a public referendum would give the Board a clear idea of how the community stands on the divisive Urban-Suburban issue.

Board member Gary Bracken said before the Board’s vote, “...it’s a small group of kids that want a chance at a good education...... if we are someplace special, we can give these kids this opportunity.”

Board Vice-President Jody Gillette said most of the feedback she received personally from residents has been positive about joining the program. “We can opt out or remove a child,” she noted, “although the program is con-troversial, it does have support.”

Board President William Sweeney said, “Respecting di-versity affirms individual worth and benefits the commu-nity.” He explained that recent debate, although heated, was exciting for him. “It re-energized me to be a part of a community (that) wants to provide a great education for their students.”

SURVIVOR’S BURDEN

www.burgerfuneralhome.com

When a loved one dies, survivors often experience feelings of guilt. They may ask themselves why they didn’t express their love more than they did, or they may dwell on hurtful words or actions that were once directed at the deceased. However, the thing to remember is that it is scarcely possible to love someone without experiencing hurt at one time or another. We may feel helpless with our guilt because a loved one may not be around to ask his or her forgiveness; yet, we may still ask for forgiveness. Most importantly, we must forgive ourselves. Bear this in mind if you have asked God

for forgiveness countless times. Forgive yourself, love yourself, and let go of your guilt.

The funeral is a ceremony of proven worth and value for those who mourn. It provides an opportunity for the survivors and others who share in the loss to express their love, respect, grief and appreciation for a life that has been lived. For more information about the funeral services we offer, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. Located at 735 East Avenue, we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Family owned and trusted since 1976.
