INDEPENDENT READING PROGRAMTheIndependentReadingProgramaimstofosterlifelongreaderswhowillbuildtheirconfidenceandpassionforavarietyoftexttypes.Studentswilldeveloptheircomprehension skills through explicitly taught comprehension mini lessons that target the three stages of ‘Reading with Purpose’.

Throughchoosing‘JustRight’texts,studentsgettohavedirectinputintothe materials thattheyengagewithintheclassroom.WiththesupportoftheirIndependentReadingteacher,studentswillreflectontheirpresentreadingskillsandsetgoalsfortheirreadingjourney.

Thisalsoassistswithtargetingcontentspecificallytostudents’learningneeds.

MATHEMATICS - YEAR 7TheYear7Mathematicsprogramprovidesstudentsopportunitiestodevelopmathematicalknowledgeandstrategiestoassistthemwithreal-lifeproblems.Students will work across the strands of Number and Algebra, Statistics and ProbabilityandMeasurementandGeometry,developingtheskillstothink,reasonand work mathematically. HUMANITIES - YEAR 7InYear7studentsstudyavarietyoftopicsincluding: AustralianFederationandtheConstitution-studentslearnaboutthe Australiangovernment,constitutionandelectionprocess.Students participate in a class census and run their own election campaign AncientHistoriesincludingaspecificfocusonthehistoryandcultureof IndigenousAustralia,AncientRomeandAncientChina Economics, including a focus on consumerism, budgeting and creating a business plan for the workplace setting Geographical forms and features with a focus on the changing nature of landforms and landscape, including completing a case study of the Hume Weir.

PERFORMING ARTS (DRAMA) - YEAR 8Studentsexperimentwitharangeofactivities,designedtoimproveanddeveloptheirperformanceskills.Theyexplorevarioustheatricalstylesanddeveloptheirexpressiveskillsandunderstandingofdrama.Studentswillexperimentwithimprovisation,roleplaysandcharacterisations.

PERFORMING ARTS (DRAMA) - YEAR 9Studentswillexploreanddeveloptheirexpressiveskills;namelyvoice,bodylanguageandgesture.Theywillexperimentwithimprovisation,roleplayandcharacterization,allofwhichbuildconfidenceinperformance,andwillworktowardanensemblepiece.Theywillexploredifferenttheatricalstylesandstagecraftelementsandwillexperienceandreviewanexternalperformance.Thissubjectisgreat for building social skills and resilience as well as a presenting a career pathway to many future opportunities in the performing arts.

PERFORMING ARTS (MUSIC) - YEAR 7Studentsstudybasicmusictheoryanddefinitions.Theyinvestigatethequalitiesofsound,howthesequalitiesareusedinmoviecompositionsandprogrammusicandhowsoundiscreated.Studentshavepracticalworklearningapieceofpopularmusicand forming a rock band.

PERFORMING ARTS (MUSIC) - YEAR 8Studentsexploreawiderangeofmusicalstylesusingavarietyofgenres,completesimple listening analysis, compose and perform their own music and research thehistoryofinstrumentsandmodernmusicalstyles.Basicmusicianshipwillbeintroduced to facilitate practical work. Assessments will include: a music project, musicianshipandparticipationinpracticalwork.TherewillbeapracticalcomponentinthesubjectinvolvingtheConcertBandand/orRockBand.

PERFORMING ARTS (MUSIC) - YEAR 9Studentsdevelopconfidenceandstrategiestoperforminfrontofanaudience.Students participate in group performances, play an instrument or participate asabackupvocalistorpercussionist.Studentsrecordtheirworkinarecordingstudioandareassessedontheirperformances,journalandmusicianship.Itisrecommended, but not compulsory, that students who elect to undertake this unit havestudiedamusicalinstrument.Attheendofthesemester,studentsperformforthe school to showcase their abilities.

MEDIA ARTS - YEAR 9ProgressivedevelopmentofskillsinMediaArts.Studentsincorporatepriorknowledge,imaginationandcreativeskillsaroundgenre,filmmakinganddigitalmanipulation.Theywillbasetheirlearningaroundmediaanditsinfluenceoncultureandsociety.Studentwillfocusondevelopingtheirprocessingandanalyticalskillsthroughproject-basedlearningandthecreationofadigitalportfolio.Pleasenote:Thereisanadditionalfeeassociatedwiththissubjectof$25.

LANGUAGESStudentsaregiventheopportunitytostudybothIndonesianandJapaneseatWodongaMiddleYearsCollege.InYear7and8studentswillstudyeachlanguageforasemesterthatwillincludeboth language and cultural learning.ProficiencyinasecondlanguagecanimprovecareerprospectsandhelpfostersocialandeconomicbenefitsforAustraliainthefieldsoftourism,education,internationallaw, commerce, education and sport. Students who speak a foreign language can havegreateremploymentopportunitiesbothinAustraliaandoverseas.Thebenefitsof studying a second language also extend into VCE where students studying a languagewillattractadditionalpointstotheUniversityEntrance(ATAR)ScoreinVCE.CulturalexchangestoJapanorIndonesiaareofferedinalternateyearsandweregularlyhoststudentsfromavarietyofAsiancountries,whovisitourschoolaspartofoursisterschools’program.Thisaffordsourstudentsabetterunderstandingoftheworldandalsotheopportunitytobuildfriendshipswithstudentsfromoverseas.

INDONESIAN AND JAPANESE - YEAR 7StudentsstudybothIndonesianandJapanese;fosteringaknowledgeofdifferentculturesandintroducingthebasicsofeachlanguage.Studentsexperiencevariedactivitiessuchaslanguagegames,artandcraftandculturalevents.

INDONESIAN - YEAR 8StudentswilllearntospeakandwriteinIndonesian.TheywilldiscoverinterestingculturalaspectsofeverydaylifeinIndonesia.StudentswilllearnaboutcurrenteventsinIndonesia-includingschoollife,travelling,foodandtheenvironment.Studentswilluseon-linelanguagelearningplatforms,learninglogsandgamestoconsolidatetheir classroom work.

INDONESIAN - YEAR 9 (FULL YEAR OF STUDY RECOMMENDED)Studentswilllearnanddeveloptheskillstoshareinformationaboutpersonalitytraitsandpotentialcareers,customsandetiquette,popularculture,religionandtheenvironment.Additionaltopicsofstudymayalsoincludewomen’srightsandEastTimor.TheyalsolearntoactconfidentlyandcompetentlycomprehendspokenandwrittenIndonesianandbasicgrammar.Thereisrevisionaswellascontinuationofworkpreviouslycovered.Pleasenote:Thereisanadditionalfeeassociatedwiththissubjectof$15persemester.
