About this guide
The guide explains what our brand stands for, how it’s expressed, and how the creative elements fit together in all our communications. It should inspire and encourage more effective communications whenever they carry the ILM logo.
A strong brand is one of the most valuable assets an organisation owns – it can mean the difference between a client choosing us, or one of our competitors. It is the visual and written expression of everything we are, and everything we promise to deliverto our clients.
To make it truly impactful it needs to be applied consistently. Everyone has a part to play in doing this and bringing our brand to life – these elements are here to help you.

LogoVersions
The logo should be used in its entirety with no alterations or additional elements. Always ensure clarity of the logo when using it on white, black and coloured backgrounds.
Use the most appropriate version of the logo to achieve legibility. Ie using the dark logo for light coloured backgrounds and the reverse logo for darker backgrounds (including black). Refer to Logo Misconduct on page 7 for further guidance.
Logos can be used over photography, as long all elements of the logo are clearly visible.
Monotone and white logos should only be used when the use of colour is not an option.
Only ever use original logo artwork. Logo artworks are available from [email protected].

City & Guilds Group strapline
Our brand strapline is the essence of what we do. It can be used in conjunction with the logo to reinforce the ILM brand.
In certain circumstances the logo may require the City & Guilds Group Business strapline.
The straplines should never appear withoutthe logo. The logo can appear on its own, but the strapline cannot. The strapline is not always necessary.
Only ever use original logo artwork. Do not alter the size or position of the straplines. Logo artworks are available from [email protected].

The ILM logo is always surrounded by an exclusion zone. This area of isolation ensures that headlines, text or other visual elements do not encroach on the logo.
The exclusion zone is created by measuringthe width of the starburst within the logo mark, shown here with an x.
There are no predetermined sizes for the ILM logo. Scale and proportion should be determined by the available space, aesthetics, function and visibility. The logo must only ever be resized in proportion and should never be squeezed or stretched. The minimum size across all versions of the logo is 40mm.

Yellow is our main brand colour and is at the heart of our palette. Using yellow throughout our communications makes them unmistakably ILM and helps to build our brand.
The visual opposite represents the hierarchy of our colour palette. Complementing our yellow in the primary palette are charcoal and orange. Use them to provide contrast against the yellow.
We also have a carefully considered set of secondary colours. They provide flexibility, help to inject vibrancy, and can be used in diagrams and icons.
The use of tints (70%, 50%, 40%, 30% and 20%) can also be employed to add greater scope to charts and diagrams but should be avoided for icons, illustrations and background usage.
Please don’t forget white will really make these colours come to life.

Tone of voiceThe way we write
4.0Our tone of voice is as much a part of our brand as the logo, typeface and colours. And just as we have built on the Group brand guidelines to create an identity that is unmistakably ILM, we have done the same to create a tone of voice that is equally distinctive.
The way a brand speaks must match the personality that the brand wants to convey. For example, IBM’s tone of voice is business-like, whereas Apple’s is irreverent. BMW is obsessed with technical perfection, whereas MINI has a sense of fun.

Tone of voiceThe way we write
Expert We are the best at what we do and we know our business – that’s why people come to us and why our vision is to develop more talented leaders than anyone else. That does not us make arrogant. But we are confident in our ability, our approach and our successes. Where we make bold statements, we provide the evidence to back them up.
Non-elitist ILM is here for everyone and designed to be accessible for all, from aspiring team leaders to CEOs. We help leaders of all levels to step up and realise their full potential. As such we speak with a non-elitist voice. We are inclusive, honest, conversational, warm, engaging – we treat our audience as equals, to us and to each other.
Passionate We are impacting on the lives and futures of everyone we come into contact with. And we take that responsibility seriously. In order for people and organisations to place their trust in us, we must be authentic and credible, passionate but not histrionic.
Helpful Clarity runs through everything we do and say. People and organisations want to learn from us – so we must be easily understood. We avoid jargon where possible, but where we must use it, we explain it. Our products and services are built around real life and real people – the way we communicate must reflect this.
Approachable We are easy to do business with – whether you’re taking one of our courses or providing them. Every touchpoint we have with an individual or organisation must be open and accessible.
Our brand voice should reflect our brand personality, which we have defined as:

Tone of voiceThe way we write
The following are examples of how to use our new Tone of Voice.
Try to avoid being too prescriptive – where you can, be friendly and inclusive.
Delivering VRQs - before our new Tone of Voice:Unless otherwise agreed and documented, learners must be registered with ILM within four weeks of the beginning of a programme lasting more than three months, or within one week for shorter programmes. Registration should be completed electronically via the Walled Garden, although a paper-based system is available if required.
Delivering VRQs - after our new Tone of Voice: New learners need to be registered with ILM within four weeks of the start of their programme (if it lasts longer than three months). Shorter programmes can be registered within one week. Registration can be done online via the Walled Garden, or by using our paper system if you prefer.
Try to avoid being too prescriptive – where you can, be friendly and inclusive.
Become an ILM Approved Centre – before our new Tone of Voice:Each year 95,000 people register for an ILM qualification. ILM offers qualifications to suit all career levels, from team leader to senior manager. We specialise in leadership, management, coaching and mentoring, but also offer a wide range of sector- and skill-specific qualifications.
Become an ILM Approved Centre – after our new Tone of Voice: There’s a reason 95,000 people register for an ILM qualification every year. Candidates know that we have something for everyone – whether they’re looking to increase their skills in leadership and management or to gain further qualifications in their chosen career.

The following are examples of how to use our new Tone of Voice.
Even technical documents can be made more accessible.
Guide to fees – before our new Tone of VoiceTo offer any ILM qualification, an organisation must be approved by us and receive ‘Centre Approval’ status. Similarly, to take part in our endorsed or development scheme, an organisation must achieve ILM ‘Recognised Provider’ status. The four year approval cycle will end on 31 August 2016: newly approved organisations will receive continuous approval – subject to meeting ongoing quality assurance requirements and remaining active in business with ILM (by achieving ILM’s minimum learner fee spend threshold).
Guide to fees – after our new Tone of Voice To offer ILM qualifications, you will need our ‘Centre Approval’ rating. Or to take part in our endorsed or development scheme, you will need to be a ‘Recognised Provider’. Your rating will stay with you as long as you continue to meet our quality assurance requirements and minimum learner fee threshold.

We have two styles of imagery – hero photography and reportage-style photography.
The two styles support each other and can be used to bring life to our communications. Imagery should express our expertise in an engaging way.
ImageryPhotography overview
5.0
September 2016
www.i-l-m.com 28
A distinctive and bold style has been createdusing the circle element from the starburst within the ILM logo. This graphic style brings a point of difference and flexibility to brand.
The circle is incorporated into photographic imagery. The imagery always features people, shot from a high viewpoint and is used to highlight the focus of the shot.
This style should be limited to advertising, cover design and section or chapter heading pages to create impact and reinforce the ILM circle.
Please refer to xxx hub and download xxx photoshop file for detailed guidance on how to create this circle element.
ImageryHero photography
5.1
September 2016
www.i-l-m.com 29
Supporting our hero imagery is reportage-style photography. Images should be of real people, showing a diversity of workplace. They capture events as they happen in a candid and unobtrusive way. If shooting a portrait, the model can look at or away from the camera but they should always look natural and comfortable. Colours should be natural and bright with light, fresh backgrounds. There should be a single focal point and a shallow depth of field. Ensure there is space within the image.
Preferably we should use our own photography. If choosing photography from a stock library please adhere to the reportage-style photography guidelines when selecting images.
ImageryReportage-style photography
5.2
September 2016
www.i-l-m.com 30
To allow for greater diversity in our brochures and larger collateral items the reportage-style photography can focus on the different sectors and workplaces rather than just people-centric imagery. This can include a wider view of the profession or a close up of an individual aspect of the job.
It is however important to consider that our brand is primarily people-focused, so that should always be the overall feel one takes away from any collateral or content.
ImageryReportage-style photography

ImageryMisconduct
5.3When shooting ILM photography or selecting imagery from a stock library, the followingrules must be adhered to at all times:
Do not use images with cluttered or busy backgrounds
Do not use images without natural and bright light
Do not use staged and overly posed photography
Do not use images without any clear space
Do not use any other types of conceptual imagery
Do not use photography which has been manipulated
September 2016
www.i-l-m.com 32
In some circumstances a gradient colour treatmentcan be added to reportage-style photography. This gives additional flexibility as an alternative to our hero imagery, but it should be used sparingly and should never be used at the same time as a hero image.
Only use this treatment on images with bright backgrounds that are white or neutral. And only use for advertising or cover designs when the hero style of photography is unavailable.
ImageryTreated photography
5.4
September 2016
www.i-l-m.com 33
When creating video communications, the style should be the moving image equivalent to that of our reportage-style photography.
Filming should capture events as they happen in a candid and unobtrusive way. Lighting should be natural and bright. Green screens and unnatural settings should be avoided.
When filming an interview, the subject should appear in a natural enviroment. The background setting should not be too cluttered or busy. The camera should focus on the model so that the setting is blurred. The subject can talk to camera, but can also look across the camera frame for variation. Avoid placing your subject in the centre of the frame.
Preferably we should avoid stock footage.

5.6The ILM illustration style is sophisticated, yet approachable, with the lines being made up of small circles reflecting and reinforcing the ILM brand and logo. The illustrations should be representative of the different skills, attributes, knowledge and experience people need to be a great leader.
For premium pieces, please make every effort to use hero photography. However, for other collateral, illustration provides flexibility. Please use sparingly and with plenty of space to support messaging. Illustrations can be designed to support literal and abstract messages.
Here are a few examples for creative inspiration.

ImageryIllustration creation
5.7When creating additional illustrations, using simple shapes creates a more successful illustration. Please be sure to use the guides found on this page to ensure consistency.
Below are instructions to follow when using Adobe Illustrator to create illustrations.1. Outline chosen shape and adjust stroke to 8pt.
Ensure you have a rounded cap.2. Tick the dashed line box so that it is on.3. Enter values for Dash to 0pt and Gap to 10pt-13pt.
Adjust gap accordingly so that it works with your shape and is consistent with all other illustrations.
4. Ensure that you have clicked the option so that the circles are aligned to corners and path ends.
5. In the top panel click Object > Path > Offset path. Here you can easily recreate the repetitive nature of the ILM illustration style.
7. Enter values for Offset to +/-3–3.5mm, ensure Joins is set to Miter and the Miter limit is set to 4. This will create a duplicate of the dotted shape which will sit within the orginal shape created. Repeat this step until the shape has been completely filled with circles.
8. Expand the strokes to an outline and make it a compound path.
9. The main shape should be filled with a gradient. Gradients can be found on page 13. Additional circular lines using ILM grey and light grey should be used.
StrokeStroke width 8ptDashed line: OnDash: 0ptGap: 10-13pt
ColourIn addition to using the ILM gradient for the main shape, ILM grey and light grey should be used more sparingly to add additonal elements to theillustrations.
