Editor’s Note

As 2014 rolls to an end, it’s nice to reflect on the films that have been released over the past months.

But it’s really hard to do that when the 2015 film release sched-ule is packed with so much awe-someness! We’re getting some long awaited sequels like “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and the latest Bond film “Spectre.” We’re getting another Terminator film as well, “Terminator: Genisys,” which is supposed to kick of a new set of films. And yes, Arnold is back in at least the first one as an ‘older’ Terminator model who has been protecting Sarah Conner basically her whole life.

We will also travel back to Jurassic Park with “Jurassic World” where the theme park is officially open for business, and that can’t be a good thing.

Mad Max is also making his tri-

umphant return to the big screen with “Mad Max: Fury Road” but instead of Max we grew up with over the years, Mel Gibson has been replaced with Tom Hardy and will more than likely be a very excellent replacement.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2” will be released (though I don’t really care for the franchise) as well as what might be the final installment of the highly popular “Fast & Furious” film series “Fast 7.”

A few more notable releas-es are Marvel’s “Ant-Man,” “Mission Impossible 5,” “Ted 2,” “Tomorrowland,” “The Peanuts Movie” and the reboot of “Fantastic 4.”

While mostly all these movies are sure to make tons of dough throughout the year, there’s one film that, for me, is outshining them all.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has been on every fan boys radar even before it was ever officially announced. I mean, they’ve brought the main cast from the original three films back, 30 years later, to continue their adventures in a gal-axy far, far away.

With only a teaser released so far, which shattered Youtube view-ing records, fans and non-fans alike will more than likely watch the film because it’s a new “Star Wars” film which makes it more than a film. It becomes an event.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

n Monday, Dec. 8, the cast and crew of the 24th

James Bond film head to Pinewood Studios in London to begin film-ing the latest install-ment of the hit fran-chise. And in less than a year it will be hitting screens around the world.

“Spectre” is the title for the film, which is also the fictional global terrorist organi-zation featured in Ian Fleming’s James Bond nov-els. SPECTRE stands for SPecial Executive for Counter-

intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion and is run by Ernst Stavro Blofeld, who was previously played in the

films by Donald P l e a s e n c e , Telly Savalas, Charles Gray and Max von Sydow among oth-

“Spectre” marks the fourth time Daniel Craig will don Bond’s tuxe-do, but in the last film, “Skyfall,” which dealt with the aging secret agent, will it be his final film? Craig is the oldest looking Bond on screen that’s for sure, but he’s still got a lot left in the tank if they choose to keep him as the titular hero.

In the movie, a cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to

uncover a sinister orga-nization.

While M battles political forces to keep the secret ser-vice alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE.

Hinx and be joined by Monica Bellucci as Lucia Sciarra, Léa Seydoux as Madeleine Swann and two-time Oscar win-ner Christoph Waltz as Oberhauser.

Along with the filming in London, the production will also travel to Mexico City, Rome, Tangier and Erfoud, Morocco, Sölden, Obertilliach and Lake

Altausee and Austria.

And this Bond will be cruising in a Aston Martin DB10 which was created specifically for the film.

helmed the highest gross-ing Bond film so far, “Skyfall,” has returned to the director’s chair to give us another thrill and hopefully another great Bond film.

TRICKED OUT RIDE The original Aston Martin DB5 made its debut in 1985’s “Goldfinger” and was full of nifty gadgets like machine guns, tire slashers and a smoke screen. These days Bond likes to stay exclusive with the newest Astin Martin DB10 created for the film and not for sale.

The 1981 cult classic “Escape From New York” is mak-

ing a comeback, albeit, in comic book form.

John Carpenter’s film features Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken and is set in 1997, which is the future, and New York has been completely written off by the gov-ernment and turned into a giant prison. Plissken gets caught and tricked into saving the President after his plane goes down over Manhattan.

There was a sequel to the film in 1996 called “Escape From L.A.” which wasn’t as awe-some but still managed to be fun.

The comic book, from BOOM! Studios, takes place right after the final frame of the first film, disregarding it’s West Coast sequel entirely.

“We’re starting right at the end of “Escape from New York” and following Snake from the moment he walks off screen,” the comic book writer Christopher Sebela said during a recent inter-view.

“Everything is so wide open at the end of the movie that there’s about a billion directions we can go, and we’re going to try to go as many of them as possible.”

This isn’t the first time the film or it’s pro-taganist has been vis-ited in comics. There was a Marvel one-shot called “The Adventures of Snake Plissken” and

a four-issue CrossGen miniseries titled “John Carpenter’s Snake Plissken Chronicles.” But what makes this new take on the char-acter interesting is that it’s planned as an ongo-ing series, so who knows where Snake will end up?

“The best part of hav-ing a springboard like this is if America is in such dire straits that the crime rate has risen 400%, and they turned

New York City into a walled prison, how warped are the other 49 states of the union?” Sebela said.

“Snake is gonna find out exactly just how messed up the rest of America has truly got-ten.”

Plissken Readies for Yet Another ‘Escape’

something a little more humorous.

Bill and Ted finally make their most excel-lent return next year with “Bill & Ted’s Most Triumphant Return,” and although it’s not the way most fans wanted to see them, at least we’re getting something.

Following the time-traveling historic epic of Excellent Adventure and the turbulent life and death of the duo in Bogus Journey, Bill and Ted must now ful-fill their destiny as the inspiration for galactic harmony. And how can someone hate the Wyld Stallyns as much as the evil Chuck De Nomolos? With the power of time travel, Bill and Ted set their sights on turning a young 27th-century Nomolos’ non-non-hei-nous attitude into some-thing most outstanding and metal.

That’s right, the band’s back together, and this time they’re a little heavier.

There’s been talks over the past few years about Bill and Ted’s return to the big screen with Keanu Reeves being the most vocal about their immanent next adven-ture.

“It didn’t help that the first script that they brought in was prob-ably budgeted at $150 million dollars,” Reeves said during a press jun-ket interview earlier this year.

“I don’t know if Bill & Ted carry that much

weight. Part of the argu-ment is that it’s not that popular internationally, that’s where so much of the funding for movies comes from these days.

“They’ve worked on the script and the bud-get, just trying to get the right script and then get the business side wrapped up, financiers and rights, all the show business stuff.”

With the film look-ing further and further on the horizon, BOOM! Studios decided to treat us with this six issue mini-series that launch-es in March 2015. Each issue of the series will be 32 pages and in full color. Mark your calen-dars for their most tri-umphant return indeed.

HELP PRODUCE A FEATURE FILMorpus Christi’s Jimmy Willden has been prom-inent in the art

scene for quite some time now. The award-winning writer, film-maker and songwriter returns to the music world with his first solo work in six years. “Melodies of the Aftermath” is his newest four track EP and will be released on Thursday, Dec. 18, at the House of Rock, 511 Starr St. in Corpus Christi.

Willden started his musical career at the age of 14, releasing his debut album “Beginnings.”

Since then, he has released four solo albums, two EPs, toured the western half of U.S. and attracted the attention of MTV, with one of his songs making it onto the soundtrack of the popular dating show, “Next.”

We had the chance to chat with Willden about the songwriting pro-cess, his new EP and his upcoming touring plans with the Jimmy Willden Band.

STXscene: When did you get in to play-ing guitar and what inspires you to write songs?

Jimmy Willdon: I got into guitar playing when I joined my first band with three of my cousins back when I was 12. I wanted to be able to write my own stuff, so I had my cousin Nathan teach me a couple chords (C and G, which became the basis for all of my songs for a couple years...) and the rest is history.

For me, everything is susceptible to becoming inspiration for a song. Of course, heartbreak and pain lead to some of the best stuff, but so does the quest for a brief under-standing of life, people, God, and the world around us. Sometimes, I can look at a f***ing tree, and be reminded of some random childhood memory...and then bam, a new song is written. BY LOOKING AT A F***ING TREE!

But I digress: usually it depends on if I’ve had my coffee.

STX: What are some of the stories behind the tracks on the EP?

JW: The theme for the new EP “Melodies of the Aftermath,” and the full album (which will drop next spring) seems to come from wad-ing through the haze of a tumultuous chapter in my life.

“Some Savior,” the opening track of the EP, depicts my thoughts and trepidation of getting back into a relationship with someone I know I shouldn’t be in one with, but I’m going to do it any-way.

“Stuck in Love” is pret-ty self-explanatory.

For “Smoke,” I call that track my “gift song” because I can spend three months laboring over trying to write a crappy song, let alone a good one.

And that one was written one night in five minutes while I was waiting to go to dinner with my Dad. I don’t know where that song came from...in fact, I was probably staring at a tree. A F***ING TREE!

STX: How’s the new single doing?

JW: “Stuck in Love” is doing great so far. We’ve been on the radio around Texas and in the UK, and we’ve been added to sever-al Internet radio stations worldwide. This month, we’ll also be going into production on the music video, which should drop soon!

STX: I knew you first as the filmmaker and now the musician. Do the two mediums com-plement one another?

JW: I’ve been playing music ever since I can remember, and I’ve also been “playing movies” ever since I can remem-ber. I do think they complement each other because, first and fore-most, I consider myself a storyteller, and a story can be told in countless mediums, be it a poem, a photograph, a painting, a movie, or a song, right? Art is relative, or some-thing; and the stories are the only thing that binds it all together.

But simply, there’s nothing greater than the marriage of film and music. Watching a movie that has the perfect song behind those moving images...flawless.

STX: I know you’ve done a little travel-ing with your band so what’s the best show you’ve played?

JW: Recently, I’ve only done some solo shows around Texas. One of my favorite recent out-of-town shows was at

the Red Shed Tavern in Austin for the Texas Indie Fest that was held in October. That group really supports artists and songwriters.

STX: What comes after you release the EP?

JW: Once the EP drops on the 18th of this month, the band and I will be div-ing headfirst into a whirl-

wind, working on a Texas tour as the start of 2015, expanding nationally as we get into springtime, and then ultimately, I want to go overseas by the end of next year.

It’s been six years since I’ve released any new music of my own, and I’m excited to share these new songs with anyone who’s willing to listen!

’Tis the season to be jolly and a little melan-choly. This holiday sea-son is offering great “new-gen” bundles of the Xbox One and PS4. With a year under the belt, each sys-tem has an impressive library of video games that will guarantee joy this holiday season. And as many gamers look for-ward to the high defini-tion thrills that the new generation of consoles has to offer, I can’t help but stop and feel somewhat sad I am leaving my old systems behind.

The old generation of consoles consisted of the titans Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 (PS3) as well as family-friend-ly Nintendo Wii. These three consoles made up the seventh generation of home entertainment sys-tems.

The Xbox 360 was released in 2005 and would remain unop-posed until the PS3 and Wii were released the fol-

lowing year. So for the last 7-8 years these were the systems that defined a generation of gamers. It was during this time that they were introduced to “Dead Rising,” “Gears of War,” “Assassin Creed,” “Infamous,” “Uncharted,” “Bioshock,” “Dragon Age” and “Mass Effect.”

Honestly, the list could go on and on.

Many of these games are genre defining, and it’s for that reason I per-sonally find it hard to believe their reign is over as the new generation of consoles begin to hit their

strides.

For the past year “new-gen” and “old-gen” have been co-existing in some-what peaceful harmony, with the exception of console exclusives, most games for the year have been released on both generations of system. But the signs of change are upon us.

On Oct. 28 of this year, video game developer Techland announced that their highly-anticipated game, “Dying Light,” was cancelling their PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game. As I read the arti-cle comments I noticed that fellow gamers were

falling

into two categories; those who were finally switch-ing over and those who were glad that the older generation version were being dropped.

No one was upset or outraged due to the “old gen” cancellation. For non-early adapters it was just the push most of them needed to make the leap to the new gen. This all just seemed odd in my opinion. Gamers have the tendency to get up in arms when their games are cancelled or messed with in any way. “Mass Effect 3”’s original ending was rewritten and

released f r e e

because the gaming com-munity was unhappy with the original ending.

But this wasn’t the case with “Dying Light”. Everyone was just accept-ing of the whole situation.

Another sign of chang-ing times is the remakes and enhanced releases of old gen games. Most recently “The Last of Us Remastered” and “Grand Theft Auto V” were released on the new con-soles with the later intro-ducing a first-person view that breathed fresh air on an already high octane game.

While I am excited for the future of gaming, I

can’t help the bittersweet goodbye I now must say to my older systems.

I know their days are numbered.

I no longer buy games for them, and soon my friends will also have con-verted over to the new systems, so game night will now consist of the lat-est new gen games.

So goodbye, sweet sys-tem, I will remember you fondly.

Let’s just hope your younger brother can live up to your impressive legacy.
