On behalf of the people and Government of the United States Virgin Islands, I applaud St. Croix This Week maga-zine for highlighting the best in entertainment, siteseeing, dining, shopping, and a myriad of recreational activities available on St. Croix. Both residents and visitors will find on page after page of this helpful resource guide eyecatching attractions, on-island features, and other points of interest. Whether with family, friends, or on your own, this magazine has the inside track and advance view of all the upcoming events and activities on the “Big Island.”

St. Croix’s relaxing beaches and rolling hillsides are the perfect complement for a weekend get-away, and the downtown shopping and restaurants in Christiansted and Frederiksted offer a variety of choices. There are hiking tours, snorkeling and scuba excursions, rainforest sights, and an abundance of other natural and cultural attrac-tions throughout the island. The options for fun and entertainment are truly limitless, and St. Croix This Week provides immediate access to all of St. Croix’s major attrac-tions, while highlighting those that are off-the-beaten path.

As the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Croix has a natural beauty that is both charming and awe-inspiring. his spring the Virgin island’s humane Learning Center celebrates its third year of humane education outreach on st. Croix. A sponsored

project of the st. Croix Foundation for Community Development, the humane Learning Center promotes compassion, respect and responsible human behavior towards all living be-ings and the environment. “My goal, having provided humane education to students on st. Croix for the past 9 years, is to decrease interpersonal violence and improve the safety and quality of life on st. Croix for both people and animals.”

in the last 3 years the humane Learning Center has given 1,200 presentations to over 24,000 students and their teachers from Kindergarten through high school at both public and private schools. Different lessons for each grade build on information from the previous year, but all the lessons include responsible pet ownership –what every family member needs to stay safe, healthy and happy- safety around animals, the importance of spay and neuter and the connection between animal cruelty and interpersonal violence.

For each class we bring along a well-socialized dog or cat so students have the opportunity to interact with them safely. the program uses the caring for animals and understanding of the ani-mal’s needs to promote the values of justice, kindness and mercy to animals and to each other.

Our summer puppet program teaches conflict resolution skills and solutions to the problems of bullying. Participants see a puppet play that is a metaphor for following one’s dream and rising above negative influences. they make their own puppets and role play potential situations they might encounter in real life. “People who feel good about themselves and develop positive communication skills are less likely to take their frustrations out on those more vulnerable.”

One school Principal praised the pro-gram saying, “each time i am more im-pressed with the rapport you are able to develop with the students and the posi-tive response you get from them. it is heartwarming to know that community organizations like yourself are so willing to expand the education of our students beyond the core academic subjects. For this we are truly appreciative. As a result of your efforts our children are more sensitive to the connection between kindness to animals and kindness to, and respect for each other.”

this year the humane Learning Cen-ter sponsored an essay contest for 6th grade students to compare how people and animals share some of the same positive qualities. they also hosted an exhibit of works by student and local adult artists all depicting animals.

the humane Learning Center has assisted 190 cats and dogs in finding their forever homes both on island and stateside through their “Love is in the Air” program. travelers can escort a homeless pet to a partner rescue or shelter where they are guaranteed adoption. the humane Learning Center supports all spay/neuter initia-tives in the community and works to promote their success.

When Shopping on St. Croix, US citi-zens can enjoy a Duty-Free Allowance of $1600.00 per person, including children, every 30 days whether buying to pack or mail. A small percentage is added on for purchases over that amount.

When returning to the US you will be required to fill out a separate customs form for these items. You may be asked to show your receipts so it is important to keep a good record of what you buy. This Duty-Free Allowance is double the $800.00 limit from other islands, so make your important purchases on St. Croix.

You may also take 5 cartons of ciga-rettes and 6 bottles of liquor back as long as one of the bottles is a product made in the Virgin Islands such as our rum.

This stately species can reach heights of over 3’ tall with large, broad leaves. The flowers are produced in a horizontal inflorescence emerging from a stout spathe and are pollinated by sunbirds using the spathe as a perch when visiting the flowers.

It is summer in lovely warm St. Croix and time for baby birds. Even though the weath-er is conducive on the island to breeding all year long, most birds naturally have their ba-bies in late spring and summer.

The White Cheek Pintail has a large group of downy yellow striped ducklings who imme-diately, after hatching, need to follow in line and keep up. They swim and forage for food on their own yet remain near the mother.

The American Kestrel has two or three white fluffy young with full-size yellow tal-ons. But the little falcons are completely dependent on their parents for months. The adult Kestrels are busy finding lizards, mice and insects to feed their carnivorous babies. And it is survival of the fittest as the ravenous young grab and gobble.

The Common Moorhen babies are quickly in the water and right behind their parents. With their bald, bright red head, they are easily seen by the mother and demand food. When danger is near they know to tuck un-der and into her feathers.

The very tiny Antillian Crested Humming-bird baby sleeps quietly in his small delicate nest waiting for his mother’s return. She is constantly on the move bringing hourly nectar to her high metabolism baby.

Like the Hummimgbird, the Bananaquit babies remain in the nest until fully grown. As many as four babies hunker down quietly in the nest until the striking black and yellow mother appears with food. Then the chatter begins as each baby calls out as if to say... “ME, ME.”

the history of our island is mirrored in its old church structures, many of which have recently been restored. the Mora-vian brethren, arriving here in the 1730s from saxony in today’s Germany, founded their mission to bring Christianity to the enslaved part of the population. their handsome yellow buildings at the entrance to Christiansted and red-roofed white wooden church mid-island, along with a contemporary church in Frederiksted, at-test to their continued importance.

the historic Anglican (episcopalian) churches built in Gothic style include st. John’s in Christiansted, and in Frederiksted the beautifully restored st. Paul’s church, which had been damaged by a fire in 1996. these and other Anglican churches bear witmess to the large english population which settled here (and also brought us our custom of left lane driving.

the large number of irish settlers, along with englishmen and hispanics, have contributed to the presece of the Catholic church; holy Cross in Christiansted is the oldest in the Virgin islands; also significant and historic are st. Ann’s (with an interest-ing shrine) mid-island, and st. Patrick’s in Frederiksted.

the Danish rule of the island from 1733 to 1917 brought the Lutheran church, which still plays a large role here. Lord God of sabaoth in Christiansted occupies the former Dutch Reformed Church; holy trin-ity in Frederiksted was built shortly after the town was founded.

the Dutch Reformed church (Presbyte-rian) now has an new mid-island home.

But these are just a few of the many (at last count over 150) churches on st. Croix, from seventh-Day Adventist to Methodist, Baptist, Church of God, any many more. You will find that church attendance and activities are important to a large part of our population, and visitors are always welcome at services,often a high point in their experience of our island.

Many other faiths offer places of wor-ship: a Jewish synagoge, a hindu temple, and a Moslem mosque, to name a few.

When edoardo seghesio came to California from the Piedmont area of italy in the late 1800s, he settled in sonoma County like so many other italian immi-grants. these early italian settlers did what they knew best; they farmed grapes.

“A half dozen of these italian families were the original settlers in the wine industry,” said Byron Gregory of Prestige Wine Group. “the Martinellis began their winery in 1896; there were the Rafanellis...” sonoma County, with its cool evenings and warm days, enjoyed a climate ideal for Zinfandel grapes which reminded the immigrants of the fruit-rich wines of italy.

edoardo seghesio started his vineyard in 1895: seghesio Family Vineyards. the winery remained family owned until 2011 when it joined Crimson Wine Group.

Although the vineyard initially sold inexpensive, bulk wines (and sacramental wines during Prohibition), seghesio Family Vineyards is now regarded as a Zinfandel specialist.

“A few years ago, the seghesio sonoma Zinfandel was the only American wine in the top ten on the Wine spectator list,” said Gregory, who considers it a best value on the market. its grapes come from the Alex-ander and Dry Creek valleys and evidence notes of black raspberry and spice.

“i feel best when i can find a great bottle of wine that restaurants can put on a wine list for $40 or $45,” Gregory says. “You want to over-deliver and give the consumer the best bang for the buck. seghesio has over-delivered over and over and over again.”

Now you can get authentic Mexican dishes prepared fresh daily at Maria’s Cantina, the newest restaurant in Gallows Bay! “Most of what we serve are my family’s recipes, the rest is my own version of what I like,” says owner Maria Fonrouge.

Maria is actually from Mexico, specifically Acayucan in Veracruz, and says, “my home town is just like St. Croix!” She lived in the US briefly before arriving here almost three years ago. “My family is really awesome, all my val-ues are from my parents, they always taught me to work hard because that was the only way to make dreams come true. My mother is hard-working; we use to own a cheese factory and I remember her going every single day to sell the produce. Together my Mom and Dad made so many sacrifices to give me an educa-tion so I would have a better future.”

“I have a degree in tourist business man-agement,” she explains, “but my passion has always been cooking. My parents couldn’t af-ford expensive culinary school so I learned from books and playing all the time in the kitchen. I became a sales manager for differ-ent hotels in Mexico, but the passion for cook-ing kept calling me and I decided to follow my dream—I have wanted to own my own restaurant since I was 10 or 12 years old!”

What does Maria like best about being a chef? “I like to make people happy with my food like the main character in one of my fa-vorite movies, Como Agua Como Chocolate. She believed she could make people cry or be happy according to your mood when you are cooking. “The restaurant has been great,” Ma-ria says, “local people love the food!” What’s most popular? “Anything with carnitas and green sauce—people love green enchiladas stuffed with carnitas!”

“Signature drinks are Margaritas (we make our own mix) and Sangria (we always have dif-ferent flavors). Our signature dish will be the Taste of St. Croix 2013 First Place Entrée winner, Pescado a la Veracruzana. Another favorite: street tacos served with home made tortillas.

Located across from the hardware store at Gallows bay, Maria’s Cantina is open Monday from 11am to 9 pm and Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 10 pm. (Bar stays open till the last person). They’re also open Sundays during football season with 14 TVs.

Carlos “tuna” Garcia had his Premier exhibit of paintings and sketches at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, Frederiksted, in December 2010, introducing himself to a whole new audience. tuna’s work is spirited, colorful, whimsical, primitive, and personal. therapy for me. today i paint in my improvised living room where i have turned a section into a studio. My fa-vorite things to paint are natural scenes that include birds, animals, and flowers and i like acrylics because it dries faster and last longer than anything else. the late Leo Carty and Paul Youngblood are my inspirations.”

Why the name “tuna?” “i remember, as a child, watching the tuna jump and always want to fish for them. As an adult, i was able to do just that as a commercial fisherman. i caught so many that i was given the nickname “tuna” years ago and it still sticks.”

Meet Cover Artist Carlos “Tuna” GarciaBorn on st.

Croix, Carlos is from a typical family of five, he says, with no other members having an artis-tic bent. he and his wife, Andrea, live in estate two Brothers, Frederiksted,

and now have two grown children of their own—one who works at Universal studios in Orlando.

A self-taught artist, Carlos has worn a lot of hats in his life—taxi driver, car-penter, hess refinery worker, shark oil distiller, and commercial fisherman. “i have always enjoyed painting, but i have always had to work other jobs to support my family through the years,” he explains.

“i started when i was ten, as a student at st. Patrick’s school, sketching by the light of a kerosene lamp. i built a small canoe and painted on it the three star logo from a box of matches of the same name. this triggered people to request drawings or paintings from me. i decided to study books with drawings and pictures and it evolved from there. i soon began to paint marine life and aquatic scenes with people in them. now i’m including historical structures.”

pinning Your Way to The altar

Brides and vendors are starting to use Pinter-est to help in the planning of their destination weddings. For those of you who have a Pinterest account or for those who haven’t signed up yet, Pinterest is a great tool!

i remember the old “wedding binder.” Once engaged, you purchased a 3”, 3-ring binder along with dividers, clear plastic page protectors, a label maker, color-coded tabs, markers, and pens. this contraption was your “wedding bible.” Any ideas, thoughts, photos, rate sheets, etc. were placed here. Anytime you met with someone, the wed-ding binder was with you to collect or reference information—it was your life until you said, “i do.”

When planning my own destination wedding in 2009, i went digital with my binder using Google images to collect photos and information. it was easier to show a vendor what i wanted this way and hopefully eliminated any errors of translation! surfing the net for wedding ideas was fun and introduced many of my vendors to new ideas and concepts. As a Destination Wedding Photographer, my brides asked me to email pho-tos of flowers, dresses, shoes, and other items for inspiration which kept me very organized!

in early 2010, Pinterest changes the game completely and could be your new “wedding bible.” it allows you to create boards classified by subject or category, i.e. wedding flowers, bridesmaids dresses, hors d’oeuvres, etc. On these boards, you can start “pinning” by sourc-ing images two ways—useing the url where the image is located or by installing their Pin it button which lets you pin images directly to your boards while you surf the web. inspiration on the go! And, maybe the best part, you can share your boards with other people like your wedding vendors. they can read your photo descriptions telling them even more about what you want and just may be inspired to create their own board for you! either way, Pinterest can help you pin your way to the alter!


When you walk through the streets of downtown Christiansted, you are bound to observe a quantity of old cannon, some painted in the Danish colors of red and white, others main-taining their original black hue. You will note that some are placed against old masonry walls on the street corners, a sensible protection against automobile encounters that would cause equal harm to car and wall, whereas the can-non would survive almost any collision.

These relics of life in the former Danish colony carry a message. While Denmark removed and reclaimed all furniture and other inventory from of-ficial buildings in connection with the sale of the Danish West Indies in 1917, the cannon were considered outdated and excess baggage, of little use to Denmark , neither then nor for future purposes. They remained at the forts of Frederiksted and Christiansted as decorative mementos rather than weapons of defense. In a sense, that had been their fate from the start. Not a single cannon fire was opened against any enemy from either of our two forts, but just the same, the artillery soldiers stationed there underwent rigorous training in cannon use and maintenance. It is ironic that neither pirates nor enemy nations attacked the forts; in the case of Christiansted in part thanks to the large coral reef surrounding the harbor except at the eastern end’s channel, towards which all the cannon were aimed.

Fort Christiansværn’s armory dis-plays, in addition to replicas of the rifles carried by the soldiers, an im-pressive rack for the large, long-han-dled tools used to clean the barrel of the cannon between each firing, an essential task to prevent acci-dental explosion caused by leftover gunpowder there. A similar caution was shown towards the gunpowder stored in a totally dry separate room, free of any source of sparks that might ignite the gunpowder.

Happily, a cannon salute of seven-teen, sometimes more shots would be a typical gesture on special occa-

sions such as the arrival of dignitaries or in celebration of the King’s birthday. In 1776, an enthusiastic Danish soldier at Fort Frederik in Frederiksted nearly created an international crisis by greeting with a cannon salute an American vessel flying the new flag. A British ob-server reported this traitorous gesture to his military headquarters, and a lot of apologies had to be made on the part of the supposedly neutral Danish West Indian government.

Many of the cannon were forged in Norway, which until 1814 was owned by Denmark. A royal forge in Larvik, northern Norway, pro-duced the massive specimens at Fort Christiansværn that guard the entrance to the harbor. No wonder the Danes did not want the task of loading them on ships back to Denmark!

Det restau-rerede Guvernementshus med en dejlig baghave og imponerende balsal er et smukt minde fra Peter von Scholtens styre mellem 1827 og 1848. Det lillebitte apotekermuseum i Apotekergården på Dron-ningens Tværgade nær Kompagniets Gade viser de gamle krukker, vægte og møbler fra det oprindelige danske apotek der lå her mel-lem 1828 og 1970. Fort Frederik i Frederiksted har en udstilling med danske dokumenter om overdragelsen af øerne og en gribende

udstilling om slavehandel og slaveri der omfatter fund fra det forliste slaveskib Fre-densborg. Carl og Marie lawaetz museet, omgivet af en vidunderlig have nord for Frederiksted var de kendte lawaetz brødres barndomshjem og afspejler en dansk immi-grantfamilies liv for hundrede år siden.

columbus landing - The site of the 1493 landing of Columbus at Salt River. Accessed by the road to the left of Salt River Marina. Minimal facilities. Managed by the Territorial State Historic Preservation Office (DPnR), and is within the boundaries of the national Historical Park and ecological Preserve. cramer Park - just before Pt. udall, on St. Croix’s east end, is a beautiful long, deep public beach with bathrooms, changing rooms, and picnic tables.

Dorsch Beach - South of Frederiksted is this deep, white-sand beach with hotels, beach bars, and restaurants nearby; great swimming and snorkeling.

Rainbow Beach - north of Frederiksted is this lively beach with bar and restaurant plus watersports and volleyball. live music on Sunday afternoons. Great for swimming!

Reef Beach – A nice slip-of-a-beach across the street from the Reef Condos on the east end. With a very gradual decline, the beach is perfect for get-ting on and off your windsurfer or for swimming with small children. Restaurants and golf nearby.

Sandy Point - located on St. Croix’s West end, this spectacular beach is part of Sandy Point national Wildlife Refuge and is one the longest in the Caribbean! Park your car in the lot and take a short hike to the beach area for swimming, more hiking, and wildlife/nature photo ops. The beach is also a popular nesting site for the leather-back, hawksbill, green, and loggerhead sea turtles between April 1 and September 1 and is closed 7-days a week. lOCATIOn. St. Croix lies 18 north latitude and 65 west longitude, about 700 miles from the equator. The Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain from the Bahamas down to Trinidad. St. Croix is surrounded by the Carib-bean Sea.

VIRGIn ISlAnDeRS. Virgin Islanders are a reserved but friendly people. “Good Morn-ing,” “Good Afternoon,” and “Good Night” are welcome Crucian greetings. Everyone speaks English or a lilting version of it.

ClIMATe. Year-round temperatures range in the 80s during the day, 70s most nights, with summer somewhat warmer. Easterly trade winds keep the humidity down. Most island showers are over in minutes. Residents collect rainwater from rooftops into household cisterns. Saltwater distillation plants help the supply. With water scarce, it is used sparingly.

TIMe. We are on Atlantic Standard in the winter, one hour ahead of Eastern Standard. During the summer, we are the same time as Eastern Daylight Savings.

wHAT TO weAR. Island dress is casual but bathing suits and men without shirts in town or grocery stores is frowned upon. Men don’t need ties or jackets; hats are great sun protec-tors for everyone. No adaptors needed for personal plug-ins.

MARIne lIFe. All native plants, animals, fish (unless harvested for food), coral and shells are protected under the Indigenous Species Act. You will not be permitted to leave the territory with any plants or marine life in your possession.

Klima. Solrigt, med årlige temperaturer omkring højt i 20erne om dagen, omkring 20 grader om natten – lidt varmere i som-mermånederne. Østlige passatvinde holder fugtigheden lav. .De fleste byger er forbi i løbet af få minutter. Beboerne samler regnvand fra tagene ned i cisterner under husene. Saltvands-destillering bidrager til forsyningen. Vi er nøjsomme med vores vandforbrug.

Tider. Vi ligger på atlantisk standardtid; om sommeren minus 5 timer fra Danmark; mellem oktober og april minus 6 timer. En time før USAs østkyst om vinteren.

Påklædning. Afslappet, men badedragt eller mænd uden skjorte på gaden og i butik-ker er ildeset. Mænd behøver ikke jakke og slips. En bredskygget hat er en god beskyt-telse mod solen for alle. En adapter til 110VDC er nødvendig til strømforbrug ved f.eks.opladning.

Hjælp til Besøgende. Turistkontoret i Christiansted ligger i Guvernementshuset med indgang fra Queen Cross Street; åbent uge dage. I Frederiksted ligger kontoret i en baggård på Strandgade nær kajen; åbent ugedage og når krydstogtsskibe ankommer. I Christiansted ligger et orienteringscenter til besøgende i den gamle vejerbod ved havnen. Her som alle vegne, vær forsigtig. Lås bilen, gå ikke med værdifulde smykker i byen, og hold dig til de befolkede områder.

Valuta og Banker. First Bank (alle filialer) har åbent mandag-torsdag kl. 8:30-16, fredag til kl. 17, lørdag kl. 9-13 (kun Sunny Isle og Frederiksted). Banco Popular Sunny Isle, man-fre kl. 8:30-16, lør kl. 9-13; Banco Popular Orange Grove, man-fre kl. 8-16. Scotia Bank Sunny Isle, man-ons kl. 8:30-15:30, tors-fre kl. 8:30-17:30. Se by-og økort om bankernes og kontantautomaternes beliggenhed.

Skatter. Ingen moms her; der lægges dog 10% skat på hotelværelser.

Media. St. Croix har flere radiostationer og tre fjernsynsstationer; kabelfjernsyn viser alle de amerikanske kanaler. To aviser udgives daglig; også en netavis. Blade fra New York og Miami kommer daglig.

Telefon. Den lokale.områdekode er 340, men bruges ikke ved lokalopringning. Tele-fonkort sælges mange steder. Mange danske mobiltelefoner fungerer ikke her; man kan købe billige telefoner med kort og andet tilbe-hør hos Sprint, AT&T og Radio Shack.

Posttakster: Vi er en del af USAs postsystem, hvor taksterne for et brev er 46 cents og postkort 33 cents. International posttakst er $1.10 for brev og postkort. Se by- og økortene for at finde postkontorerne.

Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park Saystem in the US Vir-gin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Dan-ish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named

in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.” Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors.

WALKinG tOURLet’s start a leisurely walking tour of CHriStiAnStED at the site of the

old Scale House on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. One section of the 1856 structure displays the scale used in former days to weigh barrels of rum and sugar. The other section holds a bookstore and gift shop as well as an information center about all things St. Croix. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service.

Nearby, the old Customs House with its sweeping staircase, on the grassy area next to the Fort, was completed in 1830. It now holds National Park Service offices.

Fort Christiansvaern was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appear-ance reflects the 1830’s period.

Furnishings from that era are on display; also an exhibit on local military history. At the entrance admission tickets to the Fort and Steeple Building are sold ($3) and brochures available.

Open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, weekends 9 am to 5 pm. 2 hour parking available on site.

the Steeple Building across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church and dates from 1753. It houses a display documenting aspects of the religious history of St. Croix. Ask for opening hours at the Fort.

Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West india & Guinea Company Warehouse , built in 1749. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.

Government House on King Street was in part the former home of a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/recep-tion hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. The former are open to the public (entrance at mid-building on King Street). The Virgin Islands Tourism office (open weekdays only) is downstairs fronting the Lutheran Church.

the lutheran Church across Queen Cross Street on King Street, was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added.

Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall on the left corner, which holds both the tiny Apothecary Museum on Queen Cross Street, open anytime, and in the courtyard the Archaeological Museum, open only Saturdays 10 am-2 pm.

Nearby on Company Street is the old market , laid out in the original town plan from 1735, and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.

Touring Frederiksted

Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik by the cruise ship pier and newly revitalized waterfront. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits and an art gallery, it is open weekdays from 8:30 am to 4 p.m. There is a small admission charge.

Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park. The park contains a bronze bust of the renowned slave rebellion leader.

The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800’s. The building is under-going renovations. The Visitors’ Bureau, normally located here, has been temporarily moved to an upstairs location in the courtyard of a nearby building on Strand Street. The Freedom Fountain facing the pier was installed for the Emancipation 150th anniver-sary celebration. In a historic light blue building down a block is the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts.

After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, the town was rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House on Strand Street and Apothecary Hall on King Cross Street between King and Queen Streets preserve the Frederiksted architecture of that time.

Frederiksted is home to a number of historic churches, including St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Chruch, Friedensberg Moravian Church, and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

The newly restored Old Danish School on Hospital Street and Market Street is a hand-some building. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library, built in 1803. The Market Place is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.

There are ATMs at the Scotiabank and First Bank locations on Strand Street. After hours, swipe your card at the door to get inside.

The Frederiksted waterfront is home to Sunset Jazz concerts, held the third Friday of the month from 5:30 to 8 p.m.. Admission is free to the public. A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.

Getting westSt. Croix’ West End offers beautiful sandy, calm beaches, great snorkeling and wreck

or pier diving, spectacular sunsets, and the lush subtropical forest. You can reach Frederiksted with its quaint, historic town architecture in several ways. The four-lane Melvin Evans Highway is your speediest route, if you are coming from the east. Most drivers take Queen Mary Highway (Centerline Road), which also takes you to the St. George Village Botanical Garden, the Cruzan Rum Factory, and Whim Plantation Museum, all just off the Queen Mary Highway.

Getting into FrederikstedFrom Queen Mary Highway, turn right at the traffic light at Hannah’s Rest. From the

end of Melvin Evans Highway, turn right and continue north through the traffic light. Turn left at the Post Office (this is Fisher Street).

Frederiksted town is rebounding, thanks to a recent $14 million revitalization project. To get to Strand Street, Fort Frederik and the beautifully landscaped waterfront and the Pier, turn right just before the fishermen’s boat ramp and market shed at the end of Fisher Street. This is a great starting point for a walking tour of the town with its many historic buildings.

Getting north of TownNorth of town are several wonderful beaches and eateries where you can toast the

famous Green Flash at sunset. You can pick up Route 63 along the water north of the Fort, or if you want to bypass the town when coming from the Queen Mary Highway, take the La Grange Road, Route 63, by turning rights just after Whim Museum.

Off the Beaten TrackYou can also travel west through the rainforest on Route 76, Mahogany Road (which

farther east is Route 72, Midland Road). If you are a bit adventurous, turn off on 765 or 763 (see signs for Creque Dam Farm and Mt. Victory Camp, both worth a visit)

Take Creque Dam Road (Route 58) through scenic valleys and under towering trees. This road is passable by car, but narrow and a bit rough. The rainforest can be explored by car, 4 WD (unpaved West Scenic Road can be impassable after heavy rains) or on horseback. Among area attractions are the Lawaetz Family Museum and lovely gardens at Estate Little La Grange, the impressive Estate Mt. Washington ruins, the nearby giant baobab trees at Butler Bay, and the infamous beer-drinking pigs!

Excerpts from “Arts in the U. S. Virgin Islands” by Ruth S. Moore and David M. Hough of the Caribbean Research Institute of the College of the Virgin Islands, 1967, for the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts.

tOWnhOUses and public buildings were recently analyzed by the Royal Danish Acad-emy of Fine Arts in its book, Three Towns. The writers suggested that the simple Danish pa-vilion was a desirable style for contemporary adaptation saying, “A common construction in the West Indian tradition is the half-tim-bered building, the skeleton building, with its pillars, girders and panelling. This could be developed and converted into other forms of light constructions…”

DAnCe has been, traditionally, the most widely enjoyed form of self expression in the Islands. It has retained old forms, in part, but it is also the nature of dance to change con-stantly, reflecting every passing influence and style. It has common characteristics throughout the Caribbean and distinctive differences from island to island. Some of the most distinctive forms of the past are in danger of being lost in the Virgin Islands.

There is today an awareness and a deter-mination among dance organizations and interested individuals on St. Thomas and St. Croix to preserve the dance heritage of the Islands by reviving, performing and teaching the local versions of the dance brought here by Europeans and Africans. These dances would include such figures as the Flat Ger-man, German Imperial, English, English Imperial and Polish Quadrilles; the French, Danish, English, and Saratoga Lancers; the Schottische and dances of African origin such as the Bamboula. At present, music is being composed for a ballet featuring the Bamboula as it was danced in slave days. Also this year, moving picture film has been taken of some of the dancers who still per-form the quadrilles, lancers and jigs.

In 1952, when Virgin Islands folk dancers performed in the Caribbean Festival in Puer-to Rico, J. Antonio Jarvis wrote in program notes that the quadrilles have been losing ground to modern American dances and that most of the original tunes have been forgotten. Now, every effort is being made to learn from those residents who still know

the steps, music, costumes and history of some of these folk dances.

MUsiC MAKinG has always been impor-tant to Virgin Islanders. From morning, when the fish vendors would sing out their street cries, “Icefish for breakfast, Icefish for stew,” until night, rhythm and song were heard. Taunts were put to music, “Tief man, rob-ber man; Mama tief, Mama robber…” Many forms of song were used. A military sound would be adopted, as in the various versions of Queen Mary (one of the leaders of the 1878 “Fireburn” of Frederiksted.)

Special occasions were times for special songs, particularly the Christmas season. Children still chant: “Ma, Ma, Bake the John-ny Cake, Christmas coming.”

Like the dance, however, music has a ten-dency to disappear in its older traditional forms unless efforts are made to preserve it. Recent recognition of those arts which

Leo is one of the twelve star groups or constellations of the zodiac. The zodiac is a band of constellations which encircles the sky and it is to the zodiac that we must look to find the planets.

If you look eastward from Leo, you will come to three bright star-like objects: two are stars. Almost over-head is the brighter of the two stars, Arcturus in Boötes, the Herdsman. Of course, as with most constellations, the stars that form Boötes look nothing like you think they should.

South of Arcturus and slightly fainter is Spica, a grain of wheat being held in the hand of Virgo, the goddess of the Harvest. Virgo is another of the con-stellations of the zodiac. East of Virgo is the bright star-like object that is not a star – the planet Saturn.

If you continue still farther east, just

rising is a bright red star, Antares, the brightest star in another zodiacal constel-lation, Scorpius, the Scorpion.

If you turn your gaze to the north, you will find seven fairly bright stars

which form the best known of all star groups, the Big

Dipper. Three form the handle of the

dipper and four more the bowl. Some people know that if you draw a line through the two stars at the end of the bowl and extend the line away from the bowl,

you come to the North Star. Now,

remember, the North Star is NOT

the brightest star in the sky. In fact, it really isn’t

bright at all. It just happens to be at a point in the heavens almost

directly over the North Pole of the Earth.

The Big Dipper is part of a larg-er group of stars, the constellation of Ursa Major, the Great Bear. The bowl of the dipper is the bear’s body, fainter stars’ mark the bear’s legs and head. And the three stars of the bowl? They mark the bear’s long tail. There is only one problem; bears do not have long tails! According to one legend, a mighty hunter was fighting the bear, grabbed the bear by the tail and flung the bear into the heav-ens. In doing so, he stretched the bear’s tail!

Shooting stars or meteors are the flash of light we see as pebble-sized bits of rocks burn up speeding through the air some 50 miles about the Earth. When the Earth passes through a cloud of this debris left behind by a comet, we experience a meteor shower. The most famous comet of all is Halley’s Comet, which was last near the Earth (and Sun) in 1986. Halley’s Comet is now out past the orbit of Uranus, but twice a year we pass through the dust left behind by the comet, in May and October. On the night of May 4th to 5th we will experience the maximum of the Eta Aquarid meteor shower. The best time to observe this shower is between about 3:00 a.m. and dawn. Away from bright lights you can usually see some 50 meteors per shower. Unfortunately, this year the Moon’s bright light will over-power many of the fainter meteors.
