EEARLIER THIS SUMMER I STARTED NOTICING garden patches, with neatly turned rows of soon-to-be delicious fresh vegetables, at spots along the multi-use path that borders the river. Maybe you’ve seen them too, their greens and vines basking in the full force of the sun while gardeners earnestly do their tending.

I was curious, wondering who came up with the great idea to use city land this way. I did a little investigating and quickly learned there are more than 20 such gardens around the city, many managed by the London Community Resource Centre. Its community garden program has grown steadily since the 1990s, when there was just one garden going as part of the Good Food Project. The centre rents out plots to individuals who pay a small fee, often geared-to-income, and commit to tend their plot throughout the season. Some gardens have waiting lists.

“Community gardens are places where much more than vegetables are grown,” says Linda Davies, the centre’s executive director, explaining that her gardeners enjoy the experience of being outside together as much as the produce they grow. The Sprouts Children’s Garden program runs throughout the summer, and there is also the Grow Cook Learn program with events on cooking what you grow. Go to the centre’s very informative website www.lcrc.on.ca for more information.

I thought I’d share all this with our readers because so many of you are interested in summer gardening and, if not in gardening, in ways to prepare good, fresh produce. Though it’s not for lack of trying, I’ve never had much of a green thumb but I must say I am intrigued by the passion so many people have for gardening. And I think it’s wonderful our city makes gardening possible for those who don’t have either the space or enough natural light to do so.

Sometimes the best ideas are the simple ones. Good for you, London.

Cheers,

Mary Hatt, Managing [email protected]

Benjamin Moore: Caponata

Much like taste and smell, colour is subjective. What is aesthetically pleasing in one’s surroundings may seem dull and joyless to another. The good news is, this year it seems that anything goes, with anything! Green is definitely at the forefront. The weirder the green the better, and you can pair it with just about any colour. For 2015, it’s back to nature with greens, metals and a handcrafted feel.

country, what could be better? The copper trend, however, is shiny and bright. It’s modern and urban. Paired with emerald green it is a definite win. Add navy blue to accentuate this pairing. If you want to add a little copper to your existing palette, try this West Elm side table. It’s simple, stylish and looks right at home just about anywhere.

AUBERGINE, BRASS & GRANNY SMITHModern & RefinedI’m not quite ready to say goodbye to black forever, but it’s time to add a little edge to our moody tones. Deep aubergine is certainly a step in the right direction and cooked is even better! Try Caponata from Benjamin Moore for a regal backdrop. It’s lovely paired with brown or deep pink for a serious and refined look. For a contemporary edge, throw in a quirky green accessory like Martha Sturdy’s resin flower bowl in granny smith apple. And for a little glamour, try these beautiful aged-brass wall hooks that I found on Etsy. Their clean lines highlight the brass and would be stunning on an aubergine backdrop.

AZURE, DEEP MAHOGANY & LEAF GREENSophisticated & Fresh Deep mahogany is another tone that will allow us to shift away from black. This rich brown creates a stunning backdrop on a wall or shelving unit. Simple pottery on a shelf disappears on a light background, but a deeper tone allows you to see the lines of each piece. Jewelry is a big inspiration in interior design this season. Take these Lindsay Adelman wall sconces for instance. On a much smaller scale, they would make a lovely pair of earrings! Add a hint of nature with a leafy green through furniture, an area rug or a beautiful ivy plant. Sometimes there is no substitute for the real thing.

I’m going out on a limb, but I think we’ve become more daring in our decorating, which is a good thing. It’s fun. Colour is in, so don’t be shy. Even the grey lovers are adding a pop! OH

PINK + MINT PASTELSIntroverted & SoftI’m a pink lover, and Farrow & Ball has it covered. Pink Ground is an amazing pastel tone that is soothing yet somehow modern. The mood it sets will please the introverted decorators with its gentle feel. They have it paired this season with two greens – Pale Powder and Teresa’s Green. You get that Easter egg, spumoni ice cream vibe. This is classic and not trendy. To modernize, hang a mirror with faceted edges. This subtle detail is all the rage but won’t overpower the softness of the backdrop.

COPPER, EMERALD & NAVYRomantic & DaringI adore copper, but I prefer mine aged with a patina, darkened but not green. Copper was a traditional background piece, like old, too heavy pots hanging above the stove. And for the

There’s something about a glass balcony railing that adds a touch of cinematic class to any stairway, while a glass railing on a deck opens up the view and brings

a contemporary look and feel to the aesthetics of the environment. Add a greater sense of space because of the glass transparency and because the

glass is tempered and quite thick, it’s surprisingly strong and sturdy.

OOne of the pair had spent childhood summers nearby. More recently, he and his wife had rented in the area and that holiday led to a chance peek at pictures in the window of a local real estate office. A few days later they were scouting available properties with a realtor. When they came upon a lot that was twice as wide as the area’s typical 75-foot beach frontages, and protected by an unbuildable ravine on one side, they were sold. Being at the dead end of the access road was a bonus.

Before they could remove the existing A-frame home from the property, the owners faced a slew of regulations from the local conservation authority dealing with erosion protection and waste water management. They provided an engineered slope stability study and worked with the authorities to satisfy setback requirements. Fortunately, dense cedar growth on the bank descending from the height of the property to the lake made their land quite stable.

Architect Brad Skinner of Skinner Architects worked his plans to comply with the stringent guidelines. Those plans also evolved from key words the owners had noted in a wish list: “striking,” “low-maintenance,” “big and open (but not too big),” “easy access to outside.” Brad developed blueprints for a modular structure in the form of two light-filled rectangular boxes, one cantilevered on the other, with views to Lake Huron through windowed walls on both levels and many access points to the rustically landscaped outdoor living space.

It’s not every day a cottage in steel, glass and concrete goes up on the Lake Huron shore. Contemporary design is still considered a bold move and, although gaining popularity, remains unusual for these parts. However, modern architecture makes a stunning statement and, as one London couple has found, their new place provides a haven for rest and relaxation, too.

One side of the 2,400 sq. ft. cottage is an open-concept living area anchored by an indoor-outdoor fireplace (Guildwood Lighting & Fireside) that is surrounded by a wall of Wiarton stone at one end (Tri-County Brick installed by Andrew Kinsman), dining area in the middle and a kitchen on the other end. Further along the main level are a den, a bathroom and a handy elevator to the second floor for those not wanting to climb the glass and wood stairway (wood stair treads by Wood Concepts).

Jennifer Sanders of GCW Custom Kitchens & Cabinetry Inc. was hired to consult on many interior built-in features, and worked with her clients in selecting hues and finishes to complement the abundance of grey and glass throughout the cottage, notably the expansive polished concrete floor (BNE Contractors Inc.).

“The owners wanted lots of colour,” Jennifer says, adding that many shades were inspired by a vibrant woven place mat they had purchased in Peru.

Lambeth Painting Inc. was hired to paint the walls. The owners decided on a rich red for the den. Vivid iris blue was chosen for an upstairs bathroom and laundry room, and shades that mimic Lake Huron’s ever-changing blue-greens and greys have gone on bedroom walls. Bright, glossy blue cabinetry in the kitchen delivers the biggest colour punch of all.

The kitchen is sleek and minimal. There are glass backsplash tiles by Centura Flooring London and an Italian-style range hood by Zephyr. London Major Appliances supplied the hood as well as the dishwasher, range and refrigerator.

Minimalist interiors require lots of storage space; as Jennifer puts it, “beautiful white quartz counters should be left uncluttered.”

With that in mind, she took advantage of the room’s high ceilings to install extra-tall cupboards. She then planted a pull-out pantry beside the fridge and added a butler’s pantry behind the kitchen for preparing beverages and storing small appliances and extras. GCW also installed silent, self-closing drawers to minimize noise in the largely open space.

TOP LEFT: The indoor-outdoor fireplace invites cosy conversation on the covered terrace just off the living room. LEFT: The owners were committed to rich wall colour, such as Chipotle Paste (Behr) in the den. Leather chair and loveseat are from Austin & Taylor Home Furnishings Inc.

Floor-to-ceiling windows and six sets of sliding glass doors effortlessly connect the cottage interior to its surrounding landscape. Rich leather plus decorative touches in earthy orange complement stone and concrete around the living room hearth. GCW crafted millwork elsewhere in the cottage, too, with Jennifer making sure to involve the same contemporary flair: suspended vanities in the main floor and master bathrooms and an integrated, stained maple headboard with strips of stainless and under-lit floating night tables in the master bedroom, as well as glossy, white built-in closets and drawers.

Pro Electric Inc. handled the mechanical and electrical work in the cottage as well as supplying bathroom and kitchen plumbing fixtures chosen by the owners. The owners selected engineered ceramic tiles (supplied by Centura London/installed by Bernardo Group Ltd.) for their glass showers, one of which is a Fleurco system.

Outside, a louvered overhang between the two cottage levels on the western exterior adds sun protection while providing visual interest.

“I love incorporating the rhythm and movement of nature,” Brad says of the beams of sunlight that stream through the cross pieces of the structure and repeat like “stepping stones” on the floor. “This design was very much about light patterns, transparency and openness.”

Hardscaping in Permacon stone (Dan

Rathwell of Gold Coast Landscaping Supply and Garden Centre) wraps around the cottage while many sliding glass doors allow breezy in-out access. Brian Deveau of Green With Envy finished off the exterior with low-maintenance plants and ground cover that frame and soften the grey aluminium and walnut-stained Prodema wood exterior panels. (Aluminum and wood panels, sliding doors, exterior doors and stairway glass and rail were all supplied by Westmount Storefront Systems Ltd.)

The owners, who managed the project themselves, looked after hiring their building trades and were impressed by their enthusiasm and competence. Many were not used to working with concrete and steel but were up to the challenge, nonetheless.

“C.D. Drywall & Acoustics Ltd. did a wonderful job working with the unique angles of the floor plan, with the excellent assistance of our site manager Peter Carson,” the owner says.

He adds that he and his wife thoroughly enjoyed the experience, as well. “I have lived in old houses all my life,” he says, “but I’ve always loved modern design, too. Here was an opportunity to go for it.” OH

Many of us will be entertaining outdoors. Here are some tips to help make your summer entertaining both environmentally responsible and stylish:

THE TABLEAvoid using plastic disposable cutlery and

plates. Try using your indoor cutlery, or glam it up with your inherited sterling silver and best dishes. If you don’t have enough of one set, mix and match for an eclectic look. If you need to buy more dishes, grab some at your favourite charity shop – the ultimate in recycling.

Another alternative is bamboo. The eco-friendly dishes are inexpensive, reusable and outdoor friendly, and they are from renewable resources, or you can rent cutlery and plates.

If hiring a caterer, using your own dishes and serving platters cuts out another level of disposables and reduces cost.

Use tablecloths. If you don’t own any, buy vintage at a consignment shop, thrift store or flea market. Vintage linens, such as Irish linen, will lend elegance to an outdoor meal, and they are perfect for outdoor use. If you can’t find vintage napkins, use hankies or cut a tablecloth into napkin-size squares and hem, or use with rough edges for a more rustic look.

Be creative when decorating the table. Use flowers out of your garden, from a market stall, or branches in a tall vase for a striking display, or try placing small terracotta pots filled with herbs at each place setting.

Burn beeswax or soy candles, or better yet, use LED candles, which are battery operated and reusable.

THE MENU As you begin to plan your menu, look for ingredients that are currently in season. This means you won’t need to purchase imported goods that travel thousands of miles to get to your table.

THE CLEAN UPYou’ve just enjoyed grilled chicken and steak. As delicious as they were, now you’re left with loads of dishes and a sticky barbecue. Residue can affect the cooking process of your next grilled meal by sticking to your food and changing the flavour. It can affect cooking

time too, but cleaning the grill thoroughly is the way to deal with it. If you clean it right away, then it’s easier. Believe it or not, there is a way to get it clean without noxious sprays. Taking care of your grill means it will last for many barbecues, and it will be a healthier grill to cook on.

HOW TO:

• Cover it all up! Close the lid of your barbecue, which will allow the temperature to rise to the maximum, and avoid a loss of heat, a crucial part of the cleaning process.

• Make it hot, hot, hot! Turn both propane burners to high. Wait until the maximum temperature has reached the top of the thermometer. If you don’t have one, simply wait five minutes for the barbecue to heat up. The high heat will turn the residue into ash. Shut everything off and proceed to clean the grill.

• Brush it all off! Use a good wire brush to clear off the ashes of what was the remains of your dinner. A quality wire brush can handle the heat and will not melt or catch fire.

• Alternatively, clean your grill with a barbecue brush and a thick paste of baking soda and water. Or, cut an onion in half and rub it over the rack once it has heated up; then brush a bit of olive oil on over the grill, so the food doesn’t stick next time.

With a little planning, your summer get together can be both eco-friendly and stylish. OHIIt’s a wonderful time of year, even if you aren’t able

to get away for a holiday. Weekends are filled with barbecues, friends and family, and evenings are spent sitting under the stars on the deck.

D“Drink eight glasses of water per day!”

A practice that is preached so often, by so many, it’s generally accepted that eight glasses of pure H2O each day is the ultimate hydration goal. We know this, it’s been drilled into our brains, but how many of us are actually drinking enough water?

Not many of us, according to the Angus Reid Forum, which polled 1,234 Canadian adults in nine provinces about their family’s hydration habits. Forty-five per cent of Canadians drink four or more non-water beverages each day, while 55 per cent of the respondents said their children drink only one to three glasses of water a day, and 22 per cent said their child drinks fruit juice the most often.

These numbers are worrisome as proper hydration is key to our overall health. Every organ, tissue and cell in our body is dependent on water, which makes sense since more than half of our bodies are made of it! Dehydration contributes to countless illnesses, as well as obesity and unhealthy food choices.

Now that the hot summer weather has arrived, it’s even more important for us to guzzle our share of the good stuff. Sounds simple, but water can get pretty boring, especially with all the sweet, sparkling options available, and many of us know the challenge of convincing a toddler to make the clear, tasteless choice.

But that’s just it… water doesn’t have to be the clear, tasteless choice to reap the benefits! Try one of these many ideas to uplift your water and your health this summer…

More tips for infusing your water with flavour:

Try just about any fruit, including berries and

citrus, to give your water a juicier flavour without

any added sugars.

Herbs like basil, mint and lemon balm will help balance

the sweetness of fruit and give your water an extra

nutritional kick.

Having a fresh jug visible every time you open the

fridge will encourage you to drink more water, even if

it’s tap water.

Scrunching herbs in your hand and slightly mashing

berries before adding to your water will

help release the flavours faster.

If you don’t enjoy mouthfuls

of fruits and herbs while

drinking, try an infuser

jug or glass, which

holds the solids in a

tube while allowing

them to infuse the

water with flavour. OH

Mouthwatering Watermelon:3-4 slices of watermelon, cubed

1 handful fresh mint, scrunched in hand

Ice

Strawberry Sunshine:5-10 fresh strawberries, sliced

½ lemon, sliced

1 handful fresh basil scrunched in hand

HA 30-year-old home situated on three-and-a-half acres of land on the edge of London provided the perfect compromise. With a bit of imagination, a lot of paint, a change-up in some fixtures and finishes, and some extensive landscaping, this couple managed to transform a traditional custom-built house into a bright and welcoming retreat to host family and friends.

“This is the perfect setting for both of us,” says the homeowner, describing the 6,000 sq. ft., four-bedroom estate. “We were thrilled to find it.”

The setting may have been perfect, but the well-lived-in property needed some tender loving care. Since there were existing high-end finishes the couple liked, including custom crown moulding and fire surrounds from Puglia Mouldings Ltd., they decided to carry out “a seamless renovation” that would make the house their own while respecting its grand character.

“I wanted to bring light into the home,” the homeowner says. “It had a very dark and dated colour scheme.”

The extensive interior paint job was entrusted to Chris Bento of Creative Trends Painting, who worked closely with the homeowner to update the space through a careful selection of colours.

The grand foyer, with its green marble entrance hall, Italian light fixtures and dark hardwood floors, was brightened up thanks to a coat of Peau de Soie by Benjamin

Moore. “It is so much more welcoming now,” says the homeowner.

There is a powder room off the foyer that was spruced up with new faucets and fixtures from The Ensuite Bath & Kitchen Showroom (a division of EMCO). The foyer opens up onto a formal dining room at one end, and an elegant living room at the other. In the living room, painted Buckhorn (Benjamin Moore), an ornate fireplace surround provides a striking visual focal point and creates a refined atmosphere.

The fireplace, which opens to the great room as well, was retrofitted by Patio Palace Fireplace and Barbeque Shoppe with a gas insert that has a beautiful high flame. “People think it’s a real fire,” the owner says.

The great room was the area most worrisome for the owner as she went about planning her renovations. She explains, “There was a large built-in wall unit in the corner that dominated the space and made its shape quite awkward.”

The wall unit was ripped out by James Melnick of MelBarr Design Build who then redid the wall and baseboard so, as the owner says, “You would never know the space had been changed.” Cosy furniture was then carefully positioned around the fireplace. With its soaring cathedral ceiling and oversize windows overlooking the sparkling indoor pool, the room was transformed and is now a space that works as well for intimate conversation as for larger get-togethers.

He wanted the seclusion of the country. She wanted the amenities of city life. Both love to entertain.

a few upgrades to impress this accomplished chef. “Dynamic Kitchens, who did the original renovations, worked with me to make sure my changes were invisible,” the homeowner explains.

Pantry shelving was replaced with a built-in Miele coffee maker, a combi steam/convection/conventional oven and a warming drawer, all from London Major Appliances, while an ornate display rack was reconfigured with glass shelving and strategic lighting.

The countertop on the centre island needed replacing after years of previous use. Luckily, Bernardo Group Ltd. was able to source the same granite found in the rest of the

kitchen. “I was very impressed and grateful,” the homeowner says.

As an avid baker, she created a pastry and bread making station and plenty of clever storage spaces for baking sheets and other kitchen gadgets. Her favourite innovation is “the appliance garage,” a former broom closet she reassigned. It now holds an assortment of large kitchen appliances, each on its own rolling cart.

“I just roll out what I want, plug it in to use and then roll it back,” the homeowner explains. “Hauling appliances out of cupboards can be enough to discourage you from wanting to cook!”

Another unique addition – a custom-built dog feeding station – is tucked beneath a desk.

Family and friends enjoy home-cooked meals at a pedestal table, custom-built by Handstone Furniture and sourced at Warehouse 74 while more casual diners can perch on stainless-steel bar stools made by The Table & Chair Co. Inc.

During the summer months, several terraced stone patios, newly-designed and built by Sam Vail of Outdoor Aesthetics Landscape & Construction, provide wonderful spots for al fresco dining. “We did extensive landscaping to make the outside space flow and be aesthetically pleasing,” the homeowner says.

The great room connects to the living room and kitchen, as well as the pool area where Heritage Renovations Windows and Doors replaced several windows and patio doors with new ones (North Star Windows and Doors). Cedar walls, extensive flagstone decking and exotic greenery, tended by Cheryl Burr of Extra Hands, make it another magical spot in the home for year-round fun.

And this couple is always ready to welcome a crowd, especially now that they have two gourmet kitchens, one inside and one out. The home’s spacious eat-in kitchen was renovated around 10 years ago, but still needed

A rustic-looking Tuscan Chef wood-fired pizza oven (Patio Palace) dominates a lower patio. “It’s fabulous, and only takes 30 minutes to heat up. I will use it all year,” the homeowner says.

Above the lower patio is a true outdoor kitchen complete with granite countertops (Bernardo) matching those in the adjoining indoor kitchen, stainless steel bar sink, top-of-the-line Napoleon barbecue, infrared sizzle zone side burner and an outdoor Salamander (all from Patio Palace).

“An outdoor kitchen is a dream I’ve always had,” says the homeowner. “I love working outside. When I saw this covered area, I knew I had found the perfect spot.”

When entertaining a big group, a large ground-floor laundry room does double duty as a prep and staging area as well as a clean-up station, thanks to some clever design work by Dynamic Kitchens. “Having a second refrigerator and dishwasher in here is a blessing,” the homeowner says.

During the winter months, there is also plenty of room to entertain in the home’s large finished basement where there’s a games room, theatre room, bar area and wine-tasting station. And with its spacious ground-floor master bedroom and adjoining bathroom, plus two additional bedrooms upstairs – each with its own bathroom and walk-in closet – there is always room for guests.

Since moving into their home last September, the couple have worked hard to get it ready for the season, making it nothing less than an estate in the city. “We are very excited about the outdoor space and using it through the summer.” OH

TOP LEFT: The pizza oven gets fired up for family and friends on a regular basis. W5 Tying the Knot

Wrapping up a shiny new golden look takes just a few finishing touches. Yellow accents will pick up the natural sunny undertones, so add a handful of blossoms, or display a lemon-hued cookbook (or some actual lemons).

Accents of blue will make gold pop, so toss in a few pieces of blue-hued dishware, or choose a navy cabinet treatment (like my Benjamin Moore’s 2062-20 Gentleman’s Grey finish). I contrasted my cabinet handles with cut crystal knobs (which you can also match from my Yanic Simard Selected collection at YSSelected.com), for the perfect mix! OH

MIXEDMETAL MADNESS

STORY YANIC SIMARD

With summer in the air, you’re probably going to want to soak up all the sunshine you can. But don’t totally leave your interior in the dark! This is the year to go for gold in your kitchen, and bring a sense of timeless radiance to the room that you can bask in all year round – UV free. Take some inspiration from my own kitchen redesign, and mix a new metal into your space for first-place results. Here’s how:

ADDING GOLD TONES TO YOUR KITCHEN

1 Bold and BrassyWhile warm metals, in general, are

seeing a huge resurgence, one humble material in particular is worthy of its newfound time in the spotlight: brass. To add a sunny metallic tone that doesn’t feel too opulent, brass is the perfect understated option.

In my own home kitchen, I first opted to add brilliant brass handles to my cabinetry. Switching out cabinet hardware is an easy way to update a look, and moving from silvery steel to a warm metal creates a noticeable change instantly. Plus, research has found that copper (a fundamental element of brass) has antimicrobial qualities, for a healthier kitchen along with a beautiful design.

2 Mix and Don’t MatchOne reason people may be scared to

go golden in the kitchen is the cost of a total overhaul. Fear not: even warm metallics (especially balanced brass) are still very neutral, so there’s no pressure to go all-in, even with stainless-steel appliances on display. The hot and cool essences will complement and energize each other, so feel free to mix in a lot or just a little.

A few simple accessories can bring a strong feeling of gold to a space even without a hardware change. Look for textural golden accents like the Talis Hammered platter in my Yanic Simard Selected collection, and repeat the material in another zone (in a picture frame, candleholder or cocktail shaker) to make it feel integrated throughout the room.

3 A Big SplashThe future looks bright. A golden faucet

makes a big statement, but with long-term potential. Brass has spent a few decades with a bad reputation, but this warm metal has enjoyed centuries of appreciation, so you don’t have to worry about an investment in gold growing old any time soon.

Here in my kitchen, I upgraded to an Aquabrass Quinoa faucet with a sleek joystick control. While clean-lined faucets are still not widely available in golden finishes, many companies like Aquabrass do offer special finish options as a custom order. Alternately, try mixing the ornate details of a traditional faucet with contemporary cabinets and a sleek stone counter to create an elegant transitional style.

4 Golden GlowLights are a natural place to go gold,

as it suits and enhances the radiance they provide, plus it always helps to add a new layer of lighting in any space, especially in a kitchen where balanced lighting is key to ease of work.

Look for brass-accented sconces to bring a touch of gold to the walls, and pendant lights to bring some further golden sparkle to your eyeline. Keep it current and understated by choosing styles with metallic bases and glass shades (like the Lander Sconce from Crate and Barrel), for a light and airy jewelry-like effect.(PHOTO COURTESY OF CRATE AND BARREL)

THE PLACE: Glass Canada Limited’s

new residential showroom is spacious and

airy, the very thing to show off an array of

ideas for bedazzling your home with glass.

The showroom is an open-concept layout,

with 20-foot ceilings and plenty of room

for life-size displays. Nick Antone, Project

Manager and Sales Representative,

says the idea behind the redesign was

to illustrate the artistic power of glass.

“People don’t realize just what they can do

with glass,” he adds, pointing upward to

the wall-border murals that depict recent

projects by Glass Canada, a locally-owned

supplier and manufacturer since 1994.

THE STYLE: A designer was hired

to replace old displays in the former

showroom and add decorative touches

such as the dramatic blue glass company

logo and the Laguna-series glass doors

between the office and showroom – the

kind that slide on rails and are also

popular in wine cellars. Video screens

were installed to demonstrate ways to use

glass, and showroom displays reveal the

high-style impact of a product no longer

made for function only. There are glass

wall tile samples, 25 decorative cabinet

glasses and custom colour back-painted

glass, ideal for kitchens. A row of full-

size shower stalls lines one wall while

fashionable Gentek doors and North Star

windows – including North Star’s famous

paintable, stainable vinyl window – take

up the room’s centre.

ON TREND: Contemporary installations,

especially railings and stairways in a look

that has crossed over from commercial

to residential, account for much of Glass

Canada’s work these days, along with

glass shower enclosures, backsplash tiles

and textured glass. Kiln-made slumped

glass products like sinks, backsplashes

and room dividers are available, and

Glass Canada is London’s only slumped-

glass supplier.

ON THE HOUSE: Whether the purchase

is a single-pane window or a $30,000

railing, all Glass Canada installations come

with the company’s special-formula glass

cleaner. A 24-hour emergency service is

also on offer.

Not a big fan of cooking, but I love making soap and find it very therapeutic. Purdy Natural is a family business. It takes us four to five hours to make a batch. We use herbs, flowers and essential oils to achieve our scents. We also use olive oil, shea butter, coconut oil and goat’s milk. Favourites are Cinnful Grinds, Honey Baby and Alternate Routes. Last summer we created Home County Hip for the Home County Festival. It’s fun to cut the soap; like slicing fudge.

RICHARD STURGEON Metal In Fusion

I am inspired by nature and attempt to reveal its sense of flow and movement in my work, accentuating the raw beauty in the material. My sculptural work, furniture designs and architectural accents in stainless and steel are accented with copper, stone, bronze and wood. I believe in living beautifully. Art and an artistic approach to design are a big part of that. I enjoy studio work, exploring new ideas to present in a formal gallery setting. I also enjoy working directly with clients, developing signature pieces for their homes and their lifestyle. It’s about the conversation. Continued on page 42

BARBARA DRAKERay Catchers Sun Sails

I learned how to make sun sails mainly by trial and error. It helps to be good with numbers because measurements must be very precise. The sails are part of a system. Sometimes there are several sails in one space, and they must attach to strong posts by turnbuckles that are adjusted to get the proper tension. Now I’ve got a shop and heavy-duty machines, and I spend a lot of time making intricate patterns for custom orders. My fabric comes in from Australia where sun sails originated. OH

We practice an art form known as objets trouvés, using discarded items of aesthetic value to make tables, chairs, lamps and decorative items. We’ve used car parts, even a fan from an old furnace. Often we get things from stores that are going out of business. People love our wine racks. Each work we produce is one-of-a-kind. We start with one found item then go from there to create the piece. We never go online for inspiration. We use only our imaginations.

RICK CARTER Rick Carter Cabinetry

I went into a carpentry apprenticeship program straight out of high school. I have always enjoyed this work because I get to make something tangible every day. The lumber comes in rough and from it I create. This process really satisfies my creative juices. My favourite woods to work with are cherry and walnut. They are timeless choices for furniture. When I travel, I always pay attention to architecture and design. I’m inspired by the work of tradespeople wherever I go. I can’t lie, I just love what I do.
