The Antler Express 9 Sept 13, 2013 Most people could not imagine running everyday just because they love it. But, that is exactly what Renata Valquier-Chavez does. Valquier-Chavez is a sophomore here and moved from Sidney, Iowa recently. Before moving to Elkhorn, Renata attended Sidney High School where she was involved in cross country, cheerleading, basketball, track, and swim team. Running came into Renata’s life in seventh grade when she began track. She started running because her friends were training for the Junior Olympics so she ran with them. After that she went out for track and ended up liking it a lot. She began cross country freshmen year. Valquier-Chavez’s favorite place to run is anywhere that is surrounded by trees. She usually runs after school and goes 4-5 miles. Renata’s best race time is 15:01 in a 4k last year. “Practicing out of your comfort zone will later become your comfort zone,” Valquier-Chavez said on giving advice to other runners. Renata is looking forward to the meets and getting to know the runners on the team better this upcoming season. She thinks that the boys and girls teams will both do great this year. “It’s amazing how easily the team has brought her in. She’s only been here for a month and it feels like forever.” Said Coach Wolf Although the first few days were rough, Renata is looking forward to be finishing out high school at Elkhorn! by, Jayme Burney A Passion for Running It all came down to one play. After scoring a touchdown to pull within a point in the first overtime, Gross decided to attempt a two-point conversion. Gross ran a dive play that had been successful most of the night but on this play seniors Bryan McLaughlin, Colin Stiles, and Kellen Jakopovic were ready to stop the Gross running back short of the goal line to preserve a 28-27 win. The victory avenged last seasons playoff loss to the Cougars. “We just wanted a lot of revenge on them because of the terrible way we lost last year,” McLaughlin said. Antler stadium was packed September 8 for the battle between the top two teams in Class B. After the first quarter the two teams were tied 7-7, and after the half Elkhorn was leading 13-7. The Cougars outscored the Antlers in the second half to end the fourth quarter 21-21. “There were two very evenly matched teams,” assistant coach John Bacus said. “Each and every play counted but it definitely came down to the last one,” Bacus said. Elkhorn got the ball first in overtime and senior quarterback, Ben Hass, took it in for a touchdown. The field goal was good giving Elkhorn 28-21 lead. On Gross’ possession the Cougars answered with a touchdown of their own but they couldn’t produce the win with a two- point conversion. Valquier-Chavez is a sophomore here and moved from Sidney, Iowa recently. Running came into Renata’s life in seventh grade when she began track. She started running because her friends were training for the Junior Olympics so she ran with them. After that she went out for track and ended up liking it a lot. She began cross country freshmen year.

Valquier-Chavez’s favorite place to run is anywhere that is surrounded by trees. She usually runs after school and goes 4-5 miles. Renata’s best race time is 15:01 in

a 4k last year. “Practicing out of your comfort zone will later
