Define…
Sequence: a list of numbers where each term is based on the previous term or a combination of previous terms using a set pattern or rule.

Follow along on the handout…
5, 10, 15, 20…
1. Note the Start number.2. Decide how the pattern is changing.3. Write the equation.
1. Start at 52. Adding 53. Next = Now + 5; Start at 5
Ex 1:
2, 4, 8, 16, 32…
1. Note the Start number.2. Decide how the pattern is changing.3. Write the equation.
NEXT= NOW ● 2; Start at 2
Ex 2:
Ex 3:
Term Value 1 -3 2 6 3 -12 4 24 5 -48
NEXT= NOW ● –2; Start= -3
1. Note the Start number.2. Decide how the pattern is changing.3. Write the equation.
Ex 4:Term Value
1 52 2 46 3 40 4 34 5 28
NEXT=NOW – 6 ; Start= 52
Ex 5:
n = 1P = 3
n = 2P = 4
n = 3P = 5
n = 4P = 6
NEXT = NOW + 1; Start= 3
1. Note the Start number.2. Decide how the pattern is changing.3. Write the equation.
Calculators can quickly iterate functions. Start by entering your initial value, then take advantage of the ANS key to create a function to iterate simply by pressing ENTER repeatedly.
For example, to iterate NEXT = 5NOW + 10, starting at an initial value of 1:
Hit 1, ENTER. Hit 5Ans+10 and then hit ENTER repeatedly.
Interpret the calculator: initial value is 1; the next is 15, and so on. 2185 is the fourth iteration.
